It has been suggested that FBN-coated liposomes could be useful in restoring hemostasis. In the present study, we evaluated the modifications induced by multilamellar raw liposomes (MLV) or fibrinogen-coated liposomes (MLV-FBN) on hemostatic parameters.Materials and methods: Different experimental settings using whole blood or thrombocytopenic blood were used. Thromboelastometry, aggregation studies, platelet function analyzer (PFA-100®) tests and studies under flow conditions were applied to detect the effect of MLV-FBN on hemostatic parameters.Results: The presence of MLV-FBN in whole blood modified its viscoelastic properties, prolonging clot formation time (CFT) (226.5 ± 26.1 mm versus 124.1 ± 9.4 mm; P < 0.01) but reducing clot firmness (45.4 ± 1.8 mm versus 35.5 ± 2.3 mm; P < 0.05). Under thrombocytopenic conditions, FIBTEM analysis revealed that MLV-FBN shortened clotting time (CT) compared to MLV (153.3 ± 2.8 s versus 128.0 ± 4.6 s; P < 0.05). Addition of either liposome decreased fibrin formation on the subendothelium (MLV 8.1% ± 4.7% and MLV-FBN 0.8% ± 0.5% versus control 36.4% ± 6.7%; P < 0.01), whereas only MLV-FBN significantly reduced fibrin deposition in thrombocytopenic blood (14.4% ± 6.3% versus control 34.5% ± 5.2%; P < 0.05). MLV-FBN inhibited aggregation induced by arachidonic acid (52.1% ± 8.1% versus 88.0% ± 2.1% in control; P < 0.01) and ristocetin (40.3% ± 8.8% versus 94.3% ± 1.1%; P < 0.005), but it did not modify closure times in PFA-100® studies. In perfusion experiments using whole blood, MLV and MLV-FBN decreased the covered surface (13.25% ± 2.4% and 9.85% ± 2.41%, respectively, versus control 22.0% ± 2.0%; P < 0.01) and the percentage of large aggregates (8.4% ± 2.3% and 3.3% ± 1.01%, respectively, versus control 14.6% ± 1.8%; P < 0.01).Conclusion: Our results reveal that, in addition to the main contribution of fibrinogen to hemostasis, MLV-FBN inhibits platelet-mediated hemostasis and coagulation mechanisms.Keywords: thrombocytopenia, hemostasis, fibrinogen, liposomes, procoagulant activity, fibrin

We report measurements of ambient amines and ammonia with a fast response chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) in a southeastern US forest and a moderately polluted midwestern site during the summer. At the forest site, mostly C3-amines (from pptv to tens of pptv) and ammonia (up to 2 ppbv) were detected, and they both showed temperature dependencies. Aerosol-phase amines measured thermal-desorption chemical ionization mass spectrometer (TDCIMS) showed a higher mass fraction in the evening with cooler temperatures and lower in the afternoon with warmer temperatures, a trend opposite to the gas-phase amines. Concentrations of aerosol-phase primary amines measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) from micron and submicron particles were 2 orders of magnitude higher than the gas-phase amines. These results indicate that gas to particle conversion is one of the major processes that control the ambient amine concentrations at this forest site. Temperature dependencies of C3-amines and ammonia also imply reversible processes of evaporation of these nitrogen-containing compounds from soil surfaces in daytime and deposition to soil surfaces at nighttime. During the transported biomass burning plume events, various amines (C1-C6) appeared at the pptv level, indicating that biomass burning is a substantial source of amines in the southeastern US. At the moderately polluted Kent site, there were higher concentrations of C1- to C6-amines (pptv to tens of pptv) and ammonia (up to 6 ppbv). C1- to C3-amines and ammonia were well correlated with the ambient temperature. C4- to C6-amines showed frequent spikes during the nighttime, suggesting that they were emitted from local sources. These abundant amines and ammonia may in part explain the frequent new particle formation events reported from Kent. Higher amine concentrations measured at the polluted site than at the rural forested site highlight the importance of constraining anthropogenic emission sources of amines.

Introduction: Distal forearm arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) for hemodialysis (HD) include radiocephalic fistulas (RCFs) and ulnar-basilic fistulas (UBFs). However, due to the unique anatomical peculiarities of the latter approach, UBFs are only established in a limited subset of patients undergoing vascular access procedures. This study aimed to present a retrospective case series detailing the creation of UBFs, emphasizing both the technical challenges and clinical outcomes associated with this approach., Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of UBFs created between 2008 and 2023. Data collected included patient demographics, comorbidities, patency, functionality, and outcomes. Adequate blood flow and personalized Kt/Vurea levels were prerequisites for defining UBF functionality for HD., Results: Among 253 patients receiving HD, 82.2% had an AVF, with only 3.3% (n = 5) of the 150 distal AVFs functional for HD being UBFs. In this series, a total of 11 UBF fistulas were created, with nine patients experiencing an immediate thrill. Among those with UBF failure, three patients were aged > 85 years, and three had concurrent diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, and ischemic heart disease. The survival rate in the UBF group correlated with the duration of dialysis in the three patients for whom the UBF was the sole AVF, with one patient achieving a remarkably prolonged period of > 10 years. No incidences of ischemia, hand edema, or ulnar nerve lesions were noted., Conclusion: While the difficulties experienced in achieving functional UBFs for HD are highlighted in this long-term perspective, its safety and durability make it a viable option in managing an increasingly comorbid patient population., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Tracheobronchomalacia refers to an abnormally excessive collapse of the trachea and/or bronchi during exhalation. In the pediatric population, tracheobronchomalacia is increasingly recognized as a cause of morbidity and mortality. Historically, options for medical management and surgical intervention were limited, and patient outcomes were poor. Over the last decade, select US pediatric institutions have devoted significant resources to the establishment of dedicated surgery and anesthesia teams and the development of novel techniques for the successful identification, assessment, and surgical correction of tracheobronchomalacia in a highly complex subset of the pediatric population. The close communication, collaboration, and evolution of anesthesia techniques to meet the unique requirements of new surgical procedures have greatly improved patient safety and optimized outcomes. More than 800 cases have been performed across 2 US pediatric institutions using these techniques. This article reviews the posterior tracheopexy procedure, a newer but increasingly common surgery designed to address tracheobronchomalacia, and provides an overview of related anesthesia considerations and unique challenges. In addition, this article describes novel anesthesia techniques developed specifically to facilitate optimal diagnosis of tracheobronchomalacia and intraoperative management of posterior tracheopexy and similar airway surgeries. These include methods to safely enable 3-phase rigid dynamic bronchoscopy for accurate tracheobronchomalacia diagnosis, recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring during cervical and thoracic surgical dissection, continuous intraoperative bronchoscopy to enable real-time images during airway reconstruction, and intraoperative assessment of airway repair adequacy to ensure successful correction of tracheobronchomalacia., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest, Funding: Please see DISCLOSURES at the end of this article., (Copyright © 2024 International Anesthesia Research Society.)

Introduction: Air quality is a matter of interest for public health due to its rapid deterioration in low- and middle-income countries and the effects of polluted air on the health of populations., Objective: To explore the air quality conditions in which digital platform delivery workers carry out their work, evaluating the localities of Kennedy and Usaquén in Bogotá, 2021., Materials and Methods: We developed a mixed parallel convergent study based on four sources of information: 1) Ethnographic observation in five commercial locations of the two localities; 2) Monitoring of PM10 and PM2.5 in 56 delivery routes using a low-cost sensor; 3) Daily logs of the routes to support the device data interpretation, and 4) A semi-structured interview applied to the drivers to explore their danger perception during the routes., Results: We identified elements causing environmental injustice among digital platform delivery workers between the two study locations. The routes made by the delivery drivers in the locality of Kennedy registered higher concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5, compared to the values observed in Usaquén. The sources of air pollution identified by the delivery drivers through ethnographic observation and the router logbook showed the worst parameters in Kennedy., Conclusions: We evidenced that air quality, urban equipment, road infrastructure, mobile sources, and geospatial location are elements that mark the presence of environmental injustice for the digital platform delivery drivers in the studied localities. To reduce this inequity, it is necessary for digital delivery platforms and the district government to implement strategies that reduce the exposure and emission of air pollutants to protect the health of digital platform delivery workers.

Lignocellulose is the most abundant biopolymer in the biosphere. It is inexpensive and therefore considered an attractive feedstock to produce biofuels and other biochemicals. Thermochemical and/or enzymatic pretreatment is used to release fermentable monomeric sugars. However, a variety of inhibitory by-products such as weak acids, furans, and phenolics that inhibit cell growth and fermentation are also released. Phenolic compounds are among the most toxic components in lignocellulosic hydrolysates and slurries derived from lignin decomposition, affecting overall fermentation processes and production yields and productivity. Ligninolytic enzymes have been shown to lower inhibitor concentrations in these hydrolysates, thereby enhancing their fermentability into valuable products. Among them, laccases, which are capable of oxidizing lignin and a variety of phenolic compounds in an environmentally benign manner, have been used for biomass delignification and detoxification of lignocellulose hydrolysates with promising results. This review discusses the state of the art of different enzymatic approaches to hydrolysate detoxification. Objectives: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) follows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern of cancer susceptibility genes. The risk of developing this disease is primarily associated with germline mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. The advent of massive genetic sequencing technologies has expanded the mutational spectrum of this hereditary syndrome, thereby increasing the number of variants of uncertain clinical significance (VUS) detected by genetic testing., Methods: A prevalence study of HBOC was performed within 2,928 families from the Region of Murcia, in southeastern Spain. Genetic testing enabled the identification of recurrent pathogenic variants and founder mutations, which were mainly related to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. VUS testing was performed using a prioritization algorithm designed by our working group., Results: Variants c.68&#95;69del, c.212+1G>A, and c.5123C>A were detected in 30 % of BRCA1 carriers, whereas exon 2 deletion concurrent with c.3264dupT, c.3455T>G and c.9117G>A variants were found in 30 % of BRCA2 carriers. A total of 16 VUS (15 %) were prioritized., Conclusions: The genotype-phenotype correlation observed in our study is consistent with the scientific literature. Furthermore, the founder effect of c.1918C>T ( BRCA1 ) and c.8251&#95;8254del ( ATM ) was verified in the Murcian population, whereas exon 2 deletion ( BRCA2 ) was proven to be a Spanish founder mutation. Bacterial degradation of crude oil is a promising strategy for reducing the concentration of hydrocarbons in contaminated environments. In the first part of this study, we report the enrichment of two bacterial consortia from deep sediments of the Gulf of Mexico with crude oil as the sole carbon and energy source. We conducted a comparative analysis of the bacterial community in the original sediment, assessing its diversity, and compared it to the enrichment observed after exposure to crude oil in defined cultures. The consortium exhibiting the highest hydrocarbon degradation was predominantly enriched with Rhodococcus (75%). Bacterial community analysis revealed the presence of other hydrocarbonoclastic members in both consortia. In the second part, we report the isolation of the strain Rhodococcus sp. GOMB7 with crude oil as a unique carbon source under microaerobic conditions and its characterization. This strain demonstrated the ability to degrade long-chain alkanes, including eicosane, tetracosane, and octacosane. We named this new strain Rhodococcus qingshengii GOMB7. Genome analysis revealed the presence of several genes related to aromatic compound degradation, such as benA, benB, benC, catA, catB, and catC; and five alkB genes related to alkane degradation. Although members of the genus Rhodococcus are well known for their great metabolic versatility, including the aerobic degradation of recalcitrant organic compounds such as petroleum hydrocarbons, this is the first report of a novel strain of Rhodococcus capable of degrading long-chain alkanes under microaerobic conditions. Troubling disparities in COVID-19-associated mortality emerged early, with nearly 70% of deaths confined to Black/African American (AA) patients in some areas. However, targeted studies on this vulnerable population are scarce. Here, we applied multiomics single-cell analyses of immune profiles from matching airways and blood samples of Black/AA patients during acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Transcriptional reprogramming of infiltrating IFITM2+/S100A12+ mature neutrophils, likely recruited via the IL-8/CXCR2 axis, leads to persistent and self-sustaining pulmonary neutrophilia with advanced features of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) despite low viral load in the airways. In addition, exacerbated neutrophil production of IL-8, IL-1β, IL-6, and CCL3/4, along with elevated levels of neutrophil elastase and myeloperoxidase, were the hallmarks of transcriptionally active and pathogenic airway neutrophilia. Ice cores from the northwestern Tibetan Plateau (NWTP) contain long records of regional climate variability, but refrozen meltwater and dust in these cores has hampered development of robust timescales. Here, we introduce an approach to dating the ice via the isotopic composition of atmospheric O 2 in air bubbles (δ 18 O atm ), along with annual layer counting and radiocarbon dating. We provide a robust chronology for water isotope records (δ 18 O ice and d-excess) from three ice cores from the Guliya ice cap in the NWTP. The measurement of δ 18 O atm , although common in polar ice core timescales, has rarely been used on ice cores from low-latitude, high-altitude glaciers due to (1) low air pressure, (2) the common presence of refrozen melt that adds dissolved gases and reduces the amount of air available for analysis, and (3) the respiratory consumption of molecular oxygen (O 2 ) by micro-organisms in the ice, which fractionates the δ 18 O of O 2 from the atmospheric value. Here, we make corrections for melt and respiration to address these complications. The resulting records of water isotopes from the Guliya ice cores reveal climatic variations over the last 15,000 y, the timings of which correspond to those observed in independently dated lake and speleothem records and confirm that the Guliya ice cap existed before the Holocene. The millennial-scale drivers of δ 18 O ice are complex and temporally variable; however, Guliya δ 18 O ice values since the mid-20th century are the highest since the beginning of the Holocene and have increased with regional air temperature.

Fungal laccases are oxidoreductases with low-specificity for substrates. The characterization of laccase's surface is a prerequisite used to obtain hybrid catalysts with new properties. Surface-exposed lysine residues are targets in immobilization reactions. In this work, LAC3-K0, an enzyme devoid of lysine, was used as a platform to detect potential surface-exposed sites suitable for replacement with a lysine residue. Seven sites were selected from a LAC3-K0 3-D model, and single lysine mutants (UNIKn, n = residue number) were obtained by site-directed mutagenesis. All mutants were expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae W303-1A and detected as functional secreted proteins by their ability to oxidize guaiacol or 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) on agar plates. All variants were active at acidic pH but presented no activity at neutral pH, as expected. Likewise, variants were stable a temperature between 15-55°C, and were completely inactivated at 70°C. Oxidation assays revealed that the replacement of one or two surface residues with lysine greatly affected enzyme activity and substrate specificity. The catalytic; parameters (KM^(app) and kcat^(app)) determined with ABTS were found to be different among the variants; Vmax^(app) was 1.5-2 fold higher in UNIK269 and triple mutant, with a KM^(app) of 0.27 and 0.30, respectively; kcat^(app )was 30.25 in UNIK238 and 32.34 in the triple mutant. The role of hydrophobic patches detected on the surface of LAC3-K0 was determined to be a favorable factor to be considered in the interaction of hybrid materials. All variants with uniquely surface located lysine created in this work can be in demand for obtaining laccases with a certain substrate specificity in the design of hybrid materials.

Due to the severity of COVID-19 disease, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization recommend that manipulation of active viral cultures of SARS-CoV-2 and respiratory secretions from COVID-19 patients be performed in biosafety level (BSL)3 laboratories. Therefore, it is imperative to develop viral inactivation procedures that permit samples to be transferred to lower containment levels (BSL2), while maintaining the fidelity of complex downstream assays to expedite the development of medical countermeasures. In this study, we demonstrate optimal conditions for complete viral inactivation following fixation of infected cells with commonly used reagents for flow cytometry, UVC inactivation in sera and respiratory secretions for protein and Ab detection, heat inactivation following cDNA amplification for droplet-based single-cell mRNA sequencing, and extraction with an organic solvent for metabolomic studies. Thus, we provide a suite of viral inactivation protocols for downstream contemporary assays that facilitate sample transfer to BSL2, providing a conceptual framework for rapid initiation of high-fidelity research as the COVID-19 pandemic continues., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors.)

Yeast surface display (YSD) is a "whole-cell" platform used for the heterologous expression of proteins immobilized on the yeast's cell surface. YSD combines the advantages eukaryotic systems offer such as post-translational modifications, correct folding and glycosylation of proteins, with ease of cell culturing and genetic manipulation, and allows of protein immobilization and recovery. Additionally, proteins displayed on the surface of yeast cells may show enhanced stability against changes in temperature, pH, organic solvents, and proteases. This platform has been used to study protein-protein interactions, antibody design and protein engineering. Other applications for YSD include library screening, whole-proteome studies, bioremediation, vaccine and antibiotics development, production of biosensors, ethanol production and biocatalysis. YSD is a promising technology that is not yet optimized for biotechnological applications. This mini review is focused on recent strategies to improve the efficiency and selection of displayed proteins. YSD is presented as a cutting-edge technology for the vectorial expression of proteins and peptides. Finally, recent biotechnological applications are summarized. Microbial communities capable of hydrocarbon degradation linked to biosurfactant (BS) and bioemulsifier (BE) production are basically unexplored in the Gulf of México (GOM). In this work, the BS and BE production of culturable marine bacterial hydrocarbonoclasts consortia isolated from two sites (the Perdido Fold Belt and Coatzacoalcos area) was investigated. The prospection at different locations and depths led to the screening and isolation of a wide variety of bacterial consortia with BS and BE activities, after culture enrichment with crude oil and glycerol as the carbon sources. At least 55 isolated consortia presented reduction in surface tension (ST) and emulsifying activity (EI 24 ). After colony purification, bacteria were submitted to polyphasic analysis assays that resulted in the identification of different strains of cultivable Gammaproteobacteria Gram (-) Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Erwinia, Pseudomonas, Vibrio, Shewanella, Thalassospira, Idiomarina, Pseudoalteromonas, Photobacterium, and Gram (+) Staphylococcus, Bacillus, and Microbacterium. Overall, the best results for ST reduction and EI 24 were obtained with consortia. Individually, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Enterobacter strains showed the best results for the reduction of ST after 6 days, while Thalassospira and Idiomarina strains showed the best results for EI 24 (above 68% after 9 days). Consortia isolates from the GOM had the ability to degrade crude oil by up to 40-80% after 24 and 36 months, respectively. The objective was to evaluate the risk of presenting an alcohol use disorder (AUD) in outpatient psychiatric units and compare it with drug addiction outpatient units and with healthy controls in the same administrative health area. An observational, descriptive, multicenter study was carried out in which a total of 1054 participants were evaluated. Data were obtained by means of the camouflaged CAGE questionnaire, which consists of 4 basic questions camouflaged with 8 other questions about healthy lifestyle habits. Cut-off points 1 and 2 were considered.Of the total number of participants, 588 were psychiatric outpatients, 153 outpatients from addiction centers and 313 healthy individuals. The mean age of the total sample was 45.8 years and the percentage of men was 53.2%. Of the total sample, 38.3% scored ≥1, as did 34.2% of psychiatric patients, 72.5% of drug addicts and 29.4% of healthy people. The ≥2 cut-off was reached by 26.6% of the total sample, 22.6% of psychiatric patients, 64.7% of drug addicts and 15.3% of healthy subjects. The participants with the highest percentage of ≥1 scores were men (48.8%), those younger than 30 years (50%), those with a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (95.9%) and ADHD (83.3%).Psychiatric patients are at a higher risk of having an AUD than the healthy subjects, although lower than those who are drug addicts, and the CAGE questionnaire is a simple and useful tool to detect the risk patients have to suffer the condition under study.

The search for novel biosurfactants (Bs) requires the isolation of microorganisms from different environments. The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is a geographical area active in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. Recent metagenomic and microbiologic studies in this area suggested a potential richness for novel Bs microbial producers. In this work, nineteen bacterial consortia from the GoM were isolated at different depths of the water column and marine sediments. Bs production from four bacterial consortia was detected by the CTAB test and their capacity to reduce surface tension (ST), emulsion index (EI 24 ), and hemolytic activity. These bacterial consortia produced Bs in media supplemented with kerosene, diesel, or sucrose. Cultivable bacteria from these consortia were isolated and identified by bacterial polyphasic characterization. In some consortia, Enterobacter cloacae was the predominant specie. E. cloacae BAGM01 presented Bs activity in minimal medium and was selected to improve its Bs production using a Taguchi and Box-Behnken experimental design; this strain was able to grow and presented Bs activity at 35 g L -1 of NaCl. This Bs decreased ST to around 34.5 ± 0.56 mNm -1 and presented an EI 24 of 71 ± 1.27%. Other properties of this Bs were thermal stability, stability in alkaline conditions, and stability at high salinity, conferring important and desirable characteristics in multiple industries. The analysis of the genome of E. cloacae BAGM01 showed the presence of rhlAB genes that have been reported in the synthesis of rhamnolipids, and alkAB genes that are related to the degradation of alkanes. The bioactive molecule was identified as a rhamnolipid after HPLC derivatization, 1 H NMR, and UPLC-QTOF-MS analysis.

In this study, the exact contribution of T. versicolor fungal biomass and laccase in the removal of the Orange II dye from liquid culture was determined. Biomass and laccase were produced with three different carbon sources [bran flakes (BF), wheat bran (WB) and wheat flour (WF)]. The contribution of the biomass and the laccase enzyme in the removal of the Orange II dye was assessed as follows: (A) in vivo treatment with fungal biomass; in vivo treatment with fungal biomass and inhibited laccase (using 0.6 mM sodium azide); and (B) in vitro treatment with crude laccase. The results of fungal biomass production were similar for all the carbon sources evaluated, while laccase volumetric activities were different. The highest enzyme production was obtained with WB, followed by BF and WF. In the in vivo treatment with fungal biomass-laccase, dye removal was over 84% for all the carbon sources. Dye adsorption by fungal biomass varied from 1.5-2%, presenting enzymatic activities ranging from 62 to 163 U L -1 . In the in vivo treatment with fungal biomass-inhibited laccase, the removal of the dye varied from 30 to 72%. In this case, the percentage of dye adsorption by fungal biomass was significantly increased and ranged from 18 to 53%. In the in vitro treatment with laccase, the removal ranged from 80 to 84%. The best treatment for dye removal involved the use of both fungal biomass and laccase. Because few ice core records from the Himalayas exist, understanding of the onset and timing of the human impact on the atmosphere of the "roof of the world" remains poorly constrained. We report a continuous 500-y trace metal ice core record from the Dasuopu glacier (7,200 m, central Himalayas), the highest drilling site on Earth. We show that an early contamination from toxic trace metals, particularly Cd, Cr, Mo, Ni, Sb, and Zn, emerged at high elevation in the Himalayas at the onset of the European Industrial Revolution (∼1780 AD). This was amplified by the intensification of the snow accumulation (+50% at Dasuopu) likely linked to the meridional displacement of the winter westerlies from 1810 until 1880 AD. During this period, the flux and crustal enrichment factors of the toxic trace metals were augmented by factors of 2 to 4 and 2 to 6, respectively. We suggest this contamination was the consequence of the long-range transport and wet deposition of fly ash from the combustion of coal (likely from Western Europe where it was almost entirely produced and used during the 19th century) with a possible contribution from the synchronous increase in biomass burning emissions from deforestation in the Northern Hemisphere. The snow accumulation decreased and dry winters were reestablished in Dasuopu after 1880 AD when lower than expected toxic metal levels were recorded. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases, with a prevalence of 20-30% in the general population and 60-80% in at-risk populations. In a not negligible percentage of patients, NAFLD progresses from steatosis to different stages of fibrosis and cirrhosis. Due to its high prevalence, NAFLD has become a significant health problem that requires specific action in detection, diagnosis, follow-up and treatment. Furthermore, given that NAFLD presents an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, a multidisciplinary approach is required for its treatment and follow-up. Patients with early stages of the disease, without fibrosis, can be diagnosed and receive treatment in the Primary Care setting, while those with more advanced liver disease benefit from specialised follow-up in the hospital setting to prevent and treat liver complications. This consensus document, prepared by the Catalan Societies of Digestology, Primary Care, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Internal Medicine, arises from the need to design strategies to guide patient flows between Primary and Hospital Care in order to offer patients with NAFLD the best care according to the stage of their disease. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic changes in the bacterial structure and potential interactions of an acclimatized marine microbial community during a light crude oil degradation experiment., Methods and Results: The bacterial community effectively removed 76·49% of total petroleum hydrocarbons after 30 days, as evidenced by GC-FID and GC-MS analyses. Short-chain alkanes and specific aromatic compounds were completely degraded within the first 6 days. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene indicated that the starting bacterial community was mainly composed by Marinobacter and more than 30 non-dominant genera. Bacterial succession was dependent on the hydrocarbon uptake with Alcanivorax becoming dominant during the highest degradation period. Sparse correlations for compositional data algorithm revealed one operational taxonomic unit (OTU) of Muricauda and an assembly of six OTUs of Alcanivorax dieselolei and Alcanivorax hongdengensis as critical keystone components for the consortium network maintenance and stability., Conclusions: This work exhibits a stabilized marine bacterial consortium with the capability to efficiently degrade light crude oil in 6 days, under laboratory conditions. Hollow ZnO microspheres were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then functionalized with graphene oxide (GO) flakes, previously obtained through electrochemical oxidation. Their photocatalytic activity toward the photodegradation of salicylic acid under UV light irradiation was evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Unfunctionalized microspheres and ZnO functionalized with chemically oxidized graphene were also studied as comparative terms. The hybrid materials of ZnO with both electrochemical and chemical GO gave a similar photodegradation yield of ∼28% against 18% of the non-functionalized microspheres. The similar degradation yields and rate constants obtained with the two GO synthetic methods indicate that electrochemical oxidation of GO represents an eco-friendly option over traditional methods for photocatalytic degradation systems., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Introduction: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) have a comorbid substance use with high frequency. Our study aims to establish a relationship between substance use and BD, in terms of greater diagnostic difficulty, a worse prognosis and changes in pharmacological prescription., Methods: The sample consisted of 394 subjects over twenty years were hospitalized with a diagnosis of BD in acute psychiatry unit of a general hospital (10.6% of total of 3,704 patients). The medical records were analyzed for demographic, clinical and family group relating to data subjects., Results: Complete data were obtained from 319 patients. Of these 165 (51.7%) had a history of drug consumption (abuse/dependence). This was more frequent in men (79.7% vs. 34.2%), in patients under 65 years (58.4% vs. 16.7%) and BD type I compared to type II (55% vs. 35%). Consumers substance patients had an age of onset of the disease earlier and more diagnostic difficulties. Regarding treatment, receiving discharge more mood stabilizers and antipsychotics than nonusers, and higher doses of most of them., Conclusions: The cases of dual pathology were detected in more than half of the sample, being the most serious and poorer prognosis patients, besides presenting a debut earlier disease. BD / substance use association was more common in men and in patients under 65 years.

In this study, the biosurfactants (Bs) production of two Serratia marcescens strains (SM3 and its isogenic SMRG-5 strain) was improved and the tenso-active agents were purified and characterized. A 2 3 factorial design was used to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and carbon sources on the surface tension (ST) reduction and emulsion index (EI 24 ) of the produced Bs. Optimum Bs production by SM3 was achieved at high concentrations of carbon and nitrogen, reducing ST to 26.5 ± 0.28 dynes/cm, with an EI 24 of 79.9 ± 0.2%. Meanwhile, the best results for SMRG-5 were obtained at low concentrations, reducing the ST to 25.2 ± 0.2 dynes/cm, with an EI 24 of 89.7 ± 0.28%. The optimal conditions for Bs production were scaled up in a 2-L reactor, yielding 4.8 and 5.2 g/L for SM3 and SMRG-5, respectively. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed the presence of two different lipopeptides (hidrofobic fractions: octadecanoic and hexadecanoic acid for SM3 and SMRG5, respectively). This study presents the description of two Callyspongia species new to science, and the distribution of all Callyspongia species recorded during the first joint Cuba-U.S. expedition to characterize Cuban mesophotic coral ecosystems (May-June 2017). Additionally, we propose a key to identify thin branching species of the genus in the Greater Caribbean. The observations here presented are the result of underwater explorations with the Mohawk Remotely Operated Vehicle dives at 35 sites around the island, at depths of 25-188 m, recording images and videos, and collecting specimens. The depth range of five species of Callyspongia, reported before in Cuba, has been extended to deeper waters. Two specimens of branching Callyspongia were collected and described: Callyspongia (Callyspongia) pedroi sp. nov. and Callyspongia (Cladochalina) alcoladoi sp. nov. Morphometric comparisons of external and skeletal traits show clear differences with the other Callyspongia species from the Central West Atlantic with a similar thin branching habit. Callyspongia (C.) pedroi sp. nov. consists of pinkish delicate cylindrical microconulose branches (3-6 mm in diameter, 10-14 cm long) that rarely anastomose, with relatively large oval oscules (1-3 mm in diameter), and a skeleton dominated by primary and secondary fiber reticulations, discretely cored by fusiform oxeas. Callyspongia (C.) alcoladoi sp. nov. consists of grayish, smooth thin branches (3-8 mm in diameter, 20-30 cm long), profusely dividing and occasionally anastomosing, with few spiny projections (2-4 mm wide, 2-4 cm long). Its skeleton includes a highly developed ectosomal tertiary reticulation within the secondary and primary reticulation, and fibers discretely cored by predominant mucronate oxeas. Clear morphometric differences of spicules and their skeletal reticulation distinguish these species from the other six thinly branching Callyspongia species known from the Caribbean.

In this study, extracellular lipase was produced by Serratia marcescens wild type and three mutant strains. The maximum lipase activity (80 U/mL) was obtained with the SMRG4 mutant strain using soybean oil. Using a 2 2 factorial design, the lipase production increased 1.55-fold (124 U/mL) with 4% and 0.05% of soybean oil and Triton X-100, respectively. The optimum conditions for maximum lipase activity were 50 °C and pH 8. However, the enzyme was active in a broad range of pH (6-10) and temperatures (5-55 °C). This lipase was stable in organic solvents and in the presence of oxidizing agents. The enzyme also proved to be efficient for the removal of triacylglycerol from olive oil in cotton cloth. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used to evaluate the effects of the interactions between total lipase activity, buffer pH, and wash temperatures on oil removal. The model obtained suggested that all selected factors had a significant impact on oil removal, with optimum conditions of 550 U lipase, 45 °C, pH 9.5, with 79.45% removal. Malnutrition and muscle wasting are common features of cancer cachexia that may interfere with the patient's response to cancer treatment, survival, and quality of life. An accurate nutritional screening at the time of diagnosis and throughout the patient's treatment fosters better control of the disease. Several screening tools have proven to be useful for this purpose. Nevertheless, nutritional evaluation is not a routine practice in this clinical setting and procedures must be standardized. Nutritional risk screening (NRS), malnutrition screening tool (MST), and patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA) are the most common screening tools, and each one possesses some benefits when screening patients for malnutrition; however, weight loss over a specific time period, dietary intake and anorexia must also be considered. The body mass index-adjusted weight loss grading system predicts survival. A ~500-year section of ice core (1497-1992) from the Puruogangri ice cap has been analyzed at high resolution for 28 trace elements (TEs: Ag, Al, As, Ba, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Nb, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sn, Sr, Ti, Tl, U, V and Zn) to assess different atmospheric contributions to the ice and provide a temporal perspective on the diverse atmospheric influences over the central Tibetan Plateau (TP). At least two volcanic depositions have significantly impacted the central TP over the past 500years, possibly originating from the Billy Mitchell (1580, Papua New Guinea) and the Parker Peak (1641, Philippines) eruptions. A decreasing aeolian dust input to the ice cap allowed the detection of an atmospheric pollution signal. The anthropogenic pollution contribution emerges in the record since the early 1900s (for Sb and Cd) and increases substantially after 1935 (for Ag, Zn, Pb, Cd and Sb). The metallurgy (Zn, Pb and steel smelting) emission products (Cd, Zn, Pb and Ag) from the former Soviet Union and especially from central Asia (e.g., Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan) likely enhanced the anthropogenic deposition to the Puruogangri ice cap between 1935 and 1980, suggesting that the westerlies served as a conveyor of atmospheric pollution to central Tibet. The impact of this industrial pollution cumulated with that of the hemispheric coal and gasoline combustion which are respectively traced by Sb and Pb enrichment in the ice. The Chinese steel production accompanying the Great Leap Forward (1958-1961) and the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) is proposed as a secondary but proximal source of Pb pollution affecting the ice cap between 1958 and 1976. The most recent decade (1980-1992) of the enrichment time series suggests that Puruogangri ice cap recorded the early Sb, Cd, Zn, Pb and Ag pollution originating from developing countries of South (i.e., India) and East (i.e., China) Asia and transported by the summer monsoonal circulation., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

This is the first study performed in Murcia (south-eastern Spain) in which 592 families with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer were identified thanks to Genetic Counselling Units from this area over 6 years. Diagnostic performance was 18.1% and 194 different genetic variants were obtained. Variants with uncertain significance accounted for only 5.6% of the total number of reports, so our population has been well characterised. In BRCA1 gene, two novel variants were found (c.1859delT and c.3205C > T) and the most frequently detected mutations were c.68&#95;69delAG, c.212 + 1G > A, c.5123C > A, c.211A > G and c.1918C > T, which together represented 56.67% of total pathogenic mutations. In BRCA2 gene, four recurrent variants were described (deletion of entire exon 2, c.9117G > A, c.3264dupT and c.3455T > G) representing 43.5% of the mutations in this gene. Mutation c.68&#95;69delAG and deletion of entire exon 2 in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes respectively were the most prevalent variants in our population. Regarding the genotype-phenotype relation, mutation c.212 + 1G > A appeared in an important percentage of breast and ovarian cancer cases, c.5123C > A in bilateral breast cancer and c.9117G > A in bilateral breast cancer and ovarian cancer. With respect to clinical-pathological characteristic, BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers showed earlier onset age of breast tumour and higher risk of developing contra lateral breast cancer than non-informative cases. Moreover, association between either molecular subtype triple negative breast cancer or ovarian cancer and BRCA1 carriers was obtained.

Improving laccases continues to be crucial in novel biotechnological developments and industrial applications, where they are concerned. This review breaks down and explores the potential of the strategies (conventional and modern) that can be used for laccase enhancement (increased production and upgraded biochemical properties such as stability and catalytic efficiency). The challenges faced with these approaches are briefly discussed. We also shed light on how these strategies merge and give rise to new options and advances in this field of work. Additionally, this article seeks to serve as a guide for students and academic researchers interested in laccases. This document not only gives basic information on laccases, but also provides updated information on the state of the art of various technologies that are used in this line of investigation. The Staphylococcus aureus cell surface contains cell wall-anchored proteins such as fibronectin-binding protein A (FnBPA) that bind to host ligands ( e.g. fibronectin; Fn) present in the extracellular matrix of tissue or coatings on cardiac implants. Recent clinical studies have found a correlation between cardiovascular infections caused by S. aureus and nonsynonymous SNPs in FnBPA. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and molecular simulations were used to investigate interactions between Fn and each of eight 20-mer peptide variants containing amino acids Ala, Asn, Gln, His, Ile, and Lys at positions equivalent to 782 and/or 786 in Fn-binding repeat-9 of FnBPA. Experimentally measured bond lifetimes (1/ k off ) and dissociation constants ( K d = k off / k on ), determined by mechanically dissociating the Fn·peptide complex at loading rates relevant to the cardiovascular system, varied from the lowest-affinity H782A/K786A peptide (0.011 s, 747 μm) to the highest-affinity H782Q/K786N peptide (0.192 s, 15.7 μm). These atomic force microscopy results tracked remarkably well to metadynamics simulations in which peptide detachment was defined solely by the free-energy landscape. Simulations and SPR experiments suggested that an Fn conformational change may enhance the stability of the binding complex for peptides with K786I or H782Q/K786I ( K d app = 0.2-0.5 μm, as determined by SPR) compared with the lowest-affinity double-alanine peptide ( K d app = 3.8 μm). Together, these findings demonstrate that amino acid substitutions in Fn-binding repeat-9 can significantly affect bond strength and influence the conformation of Fn upon binding. A Trametes versicolor laccase was functionally expressed on the membrane surface of Saccharomyces cerevisiae EBY100. Laccase expression was increased 6.57-fold by medium optimization and surpassed production by the native strain. Maximal laccase and biomass production reached 19 735 ± 1719 Ug -1 and 6.22 ± 0.53 gL -1 respectively, after 2 d of culture. Optimum oxidization of all substrates by laccase was observed at pH 3. Laccase showed high affinity towards substrates used with Km (mM) and Vmax (μmol min -1 ) values of 0.57 ± 0.0047 and 24.55 ± 0.64, 1.52 ± 0.52 and 9.25 ± 1.78, and 2.67 ± 0.12 and 11.26 ± 0.75, were reported for ABTS, 2, 6-DMP and GUA, respectively. EDTA and NaN 3 displayed none competitive inhibition towards laccase activity. The optimum temperature for activity was 50 °C; however, the enzyme was stable over a wide range of temperatures (25-70 °C). The biologically immobilized laccase showed high reusability towards phenolic substrates and low reusability with non-phenolic substrates. The USG diagnosis was a cystic mass consistent with a right ovarian cyst. The surgical abdominal total hysterectomy is performed., Results: Histopathological study of approximately 1 3x6 cm uterus with myoma fund of approximately 4 cm and myoma level cervical posterior surface of 15x12 cm.

Two laccase isoforms (lcc1 and lcc2) produced by Trametes versicolor, grown on oak sawdust under solid-state fermentation conditions, were purified and characterized. The two isoforms showed significant biochemical differences. Lcc1 and lcc2 had MWs of 60 and 100 kDa, respectively. Both isoforms had maximal activity at pH 3 with ABTS and 2,6-dimethyloxyphenol (DMP). Lcc1 was the most attractive isoform due to its greater affinity towards all the laccase substrates used. Lcc1 had Km values of 12, 10, 15 and 17 mM towards ABTS, DMP, guaiacol and syringaldazine, respectively. Lcc2 had equivalent values of 45, 47, 15 and 39 mM. The biochemical properties of lcc1 substantiate the potential of this enzyme for application in the treatment of contaminated water with low pH values and high phenolic content.

The induction of laccase isoforms in Trametes versicolor HEMIM-9 by aqueous extracts (AE) from softwood and hardwood was studied. Samples of sawdust of Pinus sp., Cedrela sp., and Quercus sp. were boiled in water to obtain AE. Different volumes of each AE were added to fungal cultures to determine the amount of AE needed for the induction experiments. Laccase activity was assayed every 24 h for 15 days. The addition of each AE (50 to 150 μl) to the fungal cultures increased laccase production compared to the control (0.42 ± 0.01 U ml(-1)). The highest laccase activities detected were 1.92 ± 0.15 U ml(-1) (pine), 1.87 ± 0.26 U ml(-1) (cedar), and 1.56 ± 0.34 U ml(-1) (oak); laccase productivities were also significantly increased. Larger volumes of any AE inhibited mycelial growth. Electrophoretic analysis revealed two laccase bands (lcc1 and lcc2) for all the treatments. However, when lcc2 was analyzed by isoelectric focusing, inducer-dependent isoform patterns composed of three (pine AE), four (oak AE), and six laccase bands (cedar AE) were observed. Thus, AE from softwood and hardwood had induction effects in T. versicolor HEMIM-9, as indicated by the increase in laccase activity and different isoform patterns. All of the enzymatic extracts were able to decolorize the dye Orange II. Dye decolorization was mainly influenced by pH. The optimum pH for decolorization was pH 5 (85%), followed by pH 7 (50%) and pH 3 (15%). No significant differences in the dye decolorizing capacity were detected between the control and the differentially induced laccase extracts (oak, pine and cedar). This could be due to the catalytic activities of isoforms with pI 5.4 and 5.8, which were detected under all induction conditions.

The pyometra is a rare condition, with an incidence of less than 1%. In patients with cervical cancer, spontaneous rupture of pyometra manifests as a generalized peritonitis, which is extremely rare, in the literature only seven cases are described. This paper reports the case of a patient with a history of postmenopausal vaginal bleeding one month before her admission to the hospital; she attended because of acute abdomen. The CT scan reported air in the abdominal cavity and the uterus with air at the periphery, so she underwent an exploratory laparotomy in which purulent material was found with two perforations in the uterine fundus. She underwent total abdominal extrafacial hysterectomy with histopathological diagnosis of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, moderately differentiated.

Microalgae have many applications, such as biodiesel production or food supplement. Depending on the application, the optimization of certain fractions of the biochemical composition (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) is required. Therefore, samples obtained in different culture conditions must be analyzed in order to compare the content of such fractions. Nevertheless, traditional methods necessitate lengthy analytical procedures with prolonged sample turn-around times. Results of the biochemical composition of Nannochloropsis oculata samples with different protein, carbohydrate and lipid contents obtained by conventional analytical methods have been compared to those obtained by thermogravimetry (TGA) and a Pyroprobe device connected to a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer detector (Py-GC/MS), showing a clear correlation. Nannochloropsis oculata was grown in an outdoor bubble column photobioreactor. To obtain information about the behaviour of microalgae/photobioreactor system related to the CO(2) net balance, an analysis of the pH profiles during microalgae growth was carried out. The use of the carbonate equilibrium chemistry and the overall CO(2) volumetric mass transfer in the photobioreactor has permitted to obtain information of the CO(2) losses/CO(2) microalgae consumption ratios. According to the 2002 census, approximately 8.5 million people live in the Republic, with 64% residing in urban areas (Oficina Nacional Estadística, n.d.). During 1990 and 2000, the Dominican Republic was a leader in economic development for Latin America and the Caribbean; however, this was not reflected in the areas of human and social development (Pan American Health Organization & World Health Organization, 2007). Less than 1% of the health budget administered by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MISPAS) is allocated to mental health and the public system is generally underfunded (Pan American Health Organization & World Health Organization, 2008). However, there is an array of mental health services within the country when privately funded facilities are taken into account.

Background Context: Surgery for disc herniation is one of the most common traumas and neurosurgical procedures. Although discectomy has low morbidity, serious intra-abdominal complications can affect retroperitoneal structures, such as the large vessels, small intestine, and ureters., Case Report: A 36-year-old woman in uncontrollable pain presented with left sciatic neuralgia in the L5 region. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extruded left paracentral hernia at L5-S1. With the patient in the decubitus prone position, trauma surgeons specializing in spine surgery performed an L5-S1 flavectomy and a simple discectomy. Intraoperative complications were not observed. About 4 hours after surgery, the patient reported sharp abdominal pain and had persistent hypotension. Emergency abdominal computed tomography showed hemoperitoneum in the pouch of Douglas and left parietocolic space. Laparoscopic exploration confirmed hemoperitoneum without visible cause, a seton perforation of the small intestine, and a few adhesions in the right iliac fossa that were consequences of previous appendectomy. A laparotomy was then performed. A lesion was discovered in the mesentery of the rectosigmoid junction coinciding with the S5-L1 space. A segmental bowel resection and mechanical side-to-side anastomosis, with drainage, were done. The patient recovered satisfactorily despite a surgical wound infection., Discussion: Although bowel perforation after discectomy rarely occurs, spine surgeons must try to prevent them by being more cautious during surgery. General surgeons must be highly suspicious of the presence of an intra-abdominal complication when there are signs and symptoms of a postoperative acute abdomen., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Mixed monolayers of deuterated palmitic acid C(15)D(31)COOH (dPA) and deuterated stearic acid C(17)D(35)COOH (dSA) with 1-bromoalkanes of different alkyl chain length (C(4) to C(16)) at the air-water interface were investigated. Alkanes and 1-chlorohexadecane ClC(16)H(33) (ClHex) were also studied to compare the effects of the halogen on the mixed monolayers. Surface pressure-area isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) were used to obtain the organization and phase behavior, providing a macroscopic view of the mixed monolayers. A molecular-level understanding of the interfacial molecular organization and intermolecular interactions was obtained by using vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). It was found that from the alkyl halide molecules investigated 1-bromopentadecane, BrC(15)H(31) (BrPent), 1-bromohexadecane, BrC(16)H(33) (BrHex), and ClHex incorporate into the fatty acid monolayers. Alkanes of 15- and 16-carbon chain length do not incorporate into the fatty acid monolayer, which suggests that the halogen is needed for incorporation. Isotherms and spectra suggest that BrHex molecules are squeezed out, or excluded, from the fatty acid monolayer as the surface pressure is increased, while BAM images confirm this. Additionally, SFG spectra reveal that the alkyl chains of both fatty acids (dPA and dSA) retain an all-trans conformation after the incorporation of alkyl halide molecules. BAM images show that at low surface pressures BrHex does not affect the two-dimensional morphology of the dPA and dSA domains and that BrHex is miscible with dPA and dSA. We also present for the first time BAM images of BrHex deposited on a water surface, which reveal the formation of aggregates while the surface pressure remains unchanged from that of neat water.

Aims: To evaluate the production and stability of laccases by Pleurotus ostreatus in liquid co-cultures with Trichoderma viride as a function of infection time and agitation rate., Methods and Results: Pleurotus ostreatus cultures were infected with T. viride spores at 30 and 48 h. Maximal laccase volumetric activity was seen after 48 h (control cultures) or 72 h (co-cultures) of cultivation time. Only the cultures infected at 30 h showed an increased laccase volumetric activity compared to control cultures. After maximal laccase volumetric activity value was reached, a sharp decrease in it was observed in control cultures. Co-cultures exhibited a comparatively lower loss of activity. The influence of P. ostreatus and/or T. viride on the stability of laccase volumetric activity and isoenzyme pattern was evaluated. Trichoderma viride induced changes in the laccase isoenzyme pattern. Agitated cultures increased biomass growth and specific productivity threefold and sevenfold, respectively, to the static cultures., Conclusions: The laccase volumetric activity is very likely the result of the balance between biosynthesis and degradation/biotransformation rates occurring during the cultures. The individual presence of P. ostreatus or T. viride in the culture negatively affected the volumetric laccase activity., Significance and Impact of the Study: The evaluation of culture parameters that could influence Trichoderma-basidomycetes interaction and laccase production during submerged fermentation has not been reported. This study showed how laccase production in co-cultures of P. ostreatus and T. viride was influenced by the infection time and agitation/oxygenation conditions.

The diterpenes ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (1) and ent-beyer-15-en-19-oic acid (2) are the major constituents of a spasmolytic diterpenic mixture obtained from the roots of Viguiera hypargyrea, a Mexican medicinal plant. Microbial transformation of 1 and 2 was performed with Aspergillus niger. Two metabolites, ent-7alpha,11beta-dihydroxy-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (4) and ent-1beta,7alpha-dihydroxy-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (5), were isolated from the incubation of 1, and one metabolite, ent-1beta,7alpha-dihydroxy-beyer-15-en-19-oic acid (6), was isolated in high yield (40%) from 2. The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses and confirmed by X-ray crystallographic studies. Compounds 1-4 and 6 and methyl ester derivatives 4a and 6a were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the electrically induced contraction of guinea-pig ileum. Compounds 1, 3, 4, 4a and 5 were significantly active. These results showed that dihydroxylation of 1 at 7beta, 11alpha-, and 1alpha, 7beta-positions resulted in a loss of potency.

An account is given of the current state of understanding of aqueous salt, acid, and lipid/water surfaces, interfacial depth, and molecular organization within the air-solution interfacial region. Water structure, hydration, surface propensity of solutes, and surface organization are discussed. In this perspective, vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopic studies of aqueous surfaces are interpreted. Comment on future directions within the field of aqueous surface structure is provided.
