Water scarcity is a significant global risk affecting health, food security, economic development, social stability, environmental sustainability, and climate change adaptation. Implementing deficit irrigation strategies can improve water efficiency and agricultural resilience. Spain, particularly the Region of Murcia, has pioneered apricot cultivation, with the 'Mirlo Rojo' variety known for its high productivity, Sharka virus resistance, and exceptional organoleptic qualities. This study evaluates the effects of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) on the quality, antioxidant activity, fatty acid profile, and volatile compounds of 'Mirlo Rojo' apricots. Four irrigation treatments (100% ETc, 60% ETc, 33% ETc, and 0% ETc) were tested during the final growth stages in May 2023. Results showed no adverse effects on the evaluated parameters. RDI treatments increased total soluble solids, glucose, and fructose content, improving maturity and sweetness indices. RDI also enhanced phenolic content and antioxidant activity, optimizing water use without compromising fruit quality and bioactive compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women in the area of science and research in Higher Education Institutions-IES and directly linked organizations point to a state of improvement in the conditions and impulse for the visibility of women in said field. In this regard, this article identifies and enunciates actions to implement and strengthen basic, contemporary and innovative strategies in the construction process for equity and parity of substantive equality of women in research. Undoubtedly, it is a linear process that, in the convergence of the vertical to horizontal transition, has resulted in a progressive advance in the recognition of women's rights through a generational process that configures the reduction in the inequality gap, but that does not guarantee totally the parity, equality, equity and opportunity of condition of the woman in the investigation. Introduction: Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) with ring sideroblasts (RS) or SF3B1 mutation (MDS-RS/SF3B1) differ in many clinical features, but share others, such as anemia. RS and SF3B1 mutation can also be found in CMML. Methods: We compared CMML with and without RS/SF3B1 and MDS-RS/SF3B1 considering the criteria established by the 2022 World Health Organization classification. Results: A total of 815 patients were included (CMML, n=319, CMML-RS/SF3B1, n=172 and MDS-RS/SF3B1, n=324). The percentage of RS was =15% in almost all CMML-RS/SF3B1 patients (169, 98.3%) and most (125, 72.7%) showed peripheral blood monocyte counts between 0.5 and 0.9 x 109/L and low risk prognostic categories. CMML-RS/SF3B1 differed significantly from classical CMML in the main clinical characteristics, whereas it resembled MDS-RS/SF3B1. At a molecular level, CMML and CMML-RS/SF3B1 had a significantly higher frequency of mutations in TET2 (mostly multi-hit) and ASXL1 (p=0.013) and CMML had a significantly lower frequency of DNMT3A and SF3B1 mutations compared to CMML/MDS-RS/SF3B1. Differences in the median overall survival among the three groups were statistically significant: 6.75 years (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.41-8.09) for CMML-RS/SF3B1 vs. 3.17 years (95% CI 2.56-3.79) for CMML vs. 16.47 years (NA) for MDS-RS/SF3B1, p<0.001. Regarding patients with CMML and MDS, both with SF3B1 mutation, survival did not significantly differ. CMML had a higher risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (24% at 8 years, 95%CI 19%-30%). Discussion: CMML-RS/SF3B1 mutation resembles MDS-RS/SF3B1 in terms of phenotype and clearly differs from CMML. The presence of =15% RS and/or SF3B1 in CMML is associated with a low monocyte count. The aim of this study was to determine the profile and contents of carotenoids, tocols and B1 and B2 vitamins in different parts of two wild edible plants (WEPs), Diplotaxis erucoides and Oxalis pes-caprae. Results showed interesting amounts of these bioactive compounds in the leaves, with intakes higher than the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin A and vitamin E after consumption of 100 g. Diplotaxis erucoides and Oxalis pes-caprae leaves evidenced high amounts of carotenoids, such as lutein (about 8 mg/100 g and 5 mg, respectively) and β-carotene (about 8 mg/100 g and 4 mg/100 g, respectively). Even when not present at high amounts, the investigated plants can also contribute to the daily intake of thiamine and riboflavin. The rich profile and high contents of bioactive compounds in these WEPs clearly justify their potential use as food ingredients in a healthy and sustainable modern cuisine and in the development of new functional foods. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a crop that is affected by more than a hundred viral species. De la pera is a local varietal type of tomato that is very popular in southeastern Spain. However, it is highly susceptible to several viruses, such as Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), which is considered one of the most important diseases of tomato crops and is a limiting factor for production in both outdoor and protected crops, making it difficult to eradicate. This study shows the effect of gene introgression on the performance of traditional lines of De la pera by combining two genes that offer tolerance to TYLCV, Ty-1 and ty-5, on some yield and quality traits and on the antioxidant capacity of tomato fruits. Two pear tomato breeding families, UMH175 and UMH220, were evaluated. Four lines from each of the families with all homozygous combinations of the Ty-1 and ty-5 genes were studied. The results showed that the introgression of the ty-5 allele produced a slight negative effect on yield, mean fruit weight, total soluble solids, and titratable acidity, in contrast to Ty-1, which produced a large negative effect. None of the introgressions showed a negative effect on the antioxidant compounds. ty-5 is a promising gene for use in breeding programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of fungi causing intertrigo in patients hospitalized and to evaluate the in vitro activity of fluconazole, itraconazole, amorolfine and cetrimonium bromide on the fungal isolates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, prospective and cross-sectional study, done in the Internal Medicine Service of the General Hospital Dr. Dario Fernandez Fierro, ISSSTE, Mexico City, from July 1st 2018 to June 30th 2019, in which fungal isolates were obtained from intertrigo patients and identified by phenotypic and biochemical methods. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution method. RESULTS: Out of 359 patients hospitalized at the Internal Medicine Department during a year, 21 (5.8%) had intertrigo in several anatomical folds and in 14 a fungal etiology was demonstrated. The most affected folds were inguinal and submammary. The main fungi causing intertrigo were Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. In general, fluconazole and itraconazole showed good antifungal activity in all isolates. One of the C. albicans isolates showed resistance to itraconazole, amorolfine and fluconazole. Amorolfine showed no activity against five of the C. albicans isolates. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the importance of identifying and determining the antifungal susceptibility of the fungi causing intertrigo in patients with multiple risk factors to achieve a successful treatment.
