Reliability of measurement with acoustic NDT applied to timber structures improves in-situ assessments. The aim of this research is to carry out simulated in-situ measurements with acoustic NDT devices in order to analyse the influence of different sensor positions, repeatability and measurement lengths. Time-of-Flight and dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE
dyn ) variability were quantified on the faces and edges of Scots pine timber from a sawmill. A comparison was also made of the models obtained at different distances between the sensors and a mean model independent of the distance between the sensors. Linear regressions between the static modulus of elasticity (MOEsta ) and MOEdyn or wave velocity depending on the distance between sensors yielded coefficients of determination (R2 ) from 0.59 to 0.86 and residual standard errors (StE) from 737 to 1232 N mm−2 . It was found that measurements taken at 1 m distance did not represent the piece as a whole, and that mean statistical models provided a better relationship, increasing by up to 14% in R2 and decreasing StE by up to 11%. It is concluded that in order to obtain a reliable model (MOEsta vs. MOEdyn ) at least 2 measurements are required at different positions on each piece of the batch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The early detection of wood quality by using advanced analytical non-destructive methods is an ongoing area of research and is highly interesting for the forest-based sector. The presence of core wood has negative effects on the performance of this material; hence, it is essential to identify this region as well as to define the endpoint where the region defined as transition wood begins. The purpose of this study was to apply a novel methodology for wood quality classification, based on FTIR spectroscopy, in combination with chemometrics, generating models capable of differentiating and predicting core wood, transition, and outer wood of Pinus nigra. This study also attempts to classify which specific IR bands define the chemical differentiation of woody regions. The results of the predictive models generated were satisfactory, attaining a full identification of classes with a non-linear SVM-DA model showing higher correlation coefficients than the generated linear SIMCA and PLS-DA models. SIMCA and PLS-DA were suitable for bands contrast and for categorizing the IR fingerprint in relation to the coretransition-outer regions. This study presents discriminative models generated from a non-destructive and relatively fast IR methodology with high correlation coefficients, thus improving the existing methods that are currently practiced for identifying wood quality. However, the database requires progressive calibration and adjustments to have acceptable reliability when validating the methods over time.

Background Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure. Methods We generated a progression score on the basis of principal component analysis of prospectively acquired longitudinal changes in motor, cognitive, and imaging measures in the 218 indivduals in the TRACK-HD cohort of Huntington's disease gene mutation carriers (data collected 2008–11). We generated a parallel progression score using data from 1773 previously genotyped participants from the European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY study of Huntington's disease mutation carriers (data collected 2003–13). We did a genome-wide association analyses in terms of progression for 216 TRACK-HD participants and 1773 REGISTRY participants, then a meta-analysis of these results was undertaken. Findings Longitudinal motor, cognitive, and imaging scores were correlated with each other in TRACK-HD participants, justifying use of a single, cross-domain measure of disease progression in both studies. The TRACK-HD and REGISTRY progression measures were correlated with each other (r=0·674), and with age at onset (TRACK-HD, r=0·315; REGISTRY, r=0·234). The meta-analysis of progression in TRACK-HD and REGISTRY gave a genome-wide significant signal (p=1·12 × 10−10) on chromosome 5 spanning three genes: MSH3, DHFR, and MTRNR2L2. The genes in this locus were associated with progression in TRACK-HD (MSH3 p=2·94 × 10−8 DHFR p=8·37 × 10−7 MTRNR2L2 p=2·15 × 10−9) and to a lesser extent in REGISTRY (MSH3 p=9·36 × 10−4 DHFR p=8·45 × 10−4 MTRNR2L2 p=1·20 × 10−3). The lead single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in TRACK-HD (rs557874766) was genome-wide significant in the meta-analysis (p=1·58 × 10−8), and encodes an aminoacid change (Pro67Ala) in MSH3. In TRACK-HD, each copy of the minor allele at this SNP was associated with a 0·4 units per year (95% CI 0·16–0·66) reduction in the rate of change of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) Total Motor Score, and a reduction of 0·12 units per year (95% CI 0·06–0·18) in the rate of change of UHDRS Total Functional Capacity score. These associations remained significant after adjusting for age of onset. Interpretation The multidomain progression measure in TRACK-HD was associated with a functional variant that was genome-wide significant in our meta-analysis. The association in only 216 participants implies that the progression measure is a sensitive reflection of disease burden, that the effect size at this locus is large, or both. Knockout of Msh3 reduces somatic expansion in Huntington's disease mouse models, suggesting this mechanism as an area for future therapeutic investigation. - Abstract
Background Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure. Methods We generated a progression score on the basis of principal component analysis of prospectively acquired longitudinal changes in motor, cognitive, and imaging measures in the 218 indivduals in the TRACK-HD cohort of Huntington's disease gene mutation carriers (data collected 2008â11). We generated a parallel progression score using data from 1773 previously genotyped participants from the European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY study of Huntington's disease mutation carriers (data collected 2003â13). We did a genome-wide association analyses in terms of progression for 216 TRACK-HD participants and 1773 REGISTRY participants, then a meta-analysis of these results was undertaken. Findings Longitudinal motor, cognitive, and imaging scores were correlated with each other in TRACK-HD participants, justifying use of a single, cross-domain measure of disease progression in both studies. The TRACK-HD and REGISTRY progression measures were correlated with each other (r=0·674), and with age at onset (TRACK-HD, r=0·315; REGISTRY, r=0·234). The meta-analysis of progression in TRACK-HD and REGISTRY gave a genome-wide significant signal (p=1·12 à 10â10) on chromosome 5 spanning three genes: MSH3, DHFR, and MTRNR2L2. The genes in this locus were associated with progression in TRACK-HD (MSH3 p=2·94 à 10â8DHFR p=8·37 à 10â7MTRNR2L2 p=2·15 à 10â9) and to a lesser extent in REGISTRY (MSH3 p=9·36 à 10â4DHFR p=8·45 à 10â4MTRNR2L2 p=1·20 à 10â3). Composite lightweight wood panels are being increasingly used in construction in Spain. Their growing use should be accompanied by necessary guarantees based on studies of their properties. As it is prescriptive and in addition to others tests, in the present work is examinated the durability of these panels when exposed to the climatic conditions, a characteristic of great importance for wood products, according to Guide ETAG 016, the current standard defining the ageing tests to be used. However, due to the use class of this material, there are indications that the testing outlined in this Guide is inappropriate for assessing the ageing of wood-based sandwich panels. Alternative tests are here proposed that recreate rather better the real conditions under which these products are used. Covering the samples in a waterproof sheeting permeable to the outward movement of water vapour, which is in fact used in the installation, provided the best procedure for testing these panels., Los paneles sándwich de madera son un producto de creciente aplicación en la edificación de nuestro país. Este ascendente uso del material debe estar acompañado de las garantías necesarias avaladas por un estudio previo de sus prestaciones. Como es preceptivo y entre otros, se evalúa su durabilidad frente a las condiciones climatológicas, clave en los productos derivados de la madera, acorde a la normativa actual definida con tal fin, la Guía ETAG 016. Sin embargo, debido a la clase de uso del material, se ha detectado que dicha normativa tal y como está concebida no es capaz de valorar su envejecimiento adecuadamente. En este trabajo se proponen ensayos alternativos al establecido tras exhaustivos análisis que recrean las condiciones reales de uso y más acordes a los productos de madera. Se concluye que la incorporación de una lámina impermeable pero permeable al vapor de agua hacia el exterior, como las utilizadas en el montaje, aportan el mejor procedimiento de ensayo.

The use of large cross-section timber for structural purposes has increased in Spain, and knowledge of its properties is strategically necessary. The Spanish visual strength-grading standard UNE 56544 (2011) efficiency applied to large cross-section structural timber was analyzed using a sample of 363 specimens of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don.) from the Basque Country and Catalonia, Spain. Different sizes were tested (80 × 120 × 2400 mm³, 150 × 250 × 5600 mm³, 150 × 250 × 4300 mm³, and 200 × 250 × 5000 mm³). Bending strength, modulus of elasticity, and density were obtained, and characteristic values were determined in order to assign strength class according to European standard EN 338 (2010). Knots and twists were the most relevant singularities for visual strength grading. It was concluded that large crosssection Spanish radiata pine timber was suitable for structures, and it was assigned to the C20 strength class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8 Pág., The early detection of wood quality by using advanced analytical non-destructive methods is an ongoing area of research and is highly interesting for the forest-based sector. The presence of core wood has negative effects on the performance of this material; hence, it is essential to identify this region as well as to define the endpoint where the region defined as transition wood begins. The purpose of this study was to apply a novel methodology for wood quality classification, based on FTIR spectroscopy, in combination with chemometrics, generating models capable of differentiating and predicting core wood, transition, and outer wood of Pinus nigra. This study also attempts to classify which specific IR bands define the chemical differentiation of woody regions. The results of the predictive models generated were satisfactory, attaining a full identification of classes with a non-linear SVM-DA model showing higher correlation coefficients than the generated linear SIMCA and PLS-DA models. SIMCA and PLS-DA were suitable for bands contrast and for categorizing the IR fingerprint in relation to the core-transition-outer regions. This study presents discriminative models generated from a non-destructive and relatively fast IR methodology with high correlation coefficients, thus improving the existing methods that are currently practiced for identifying wood quality. Centro de Investigación Forestal (CIFOR), Wood used for structural purposes has increased in the last decade in Spain. However, as raw material, wood needs to comply with requirements that are not always present. Knowledge about the wood quality from the trees on the stand is essential for providing feedback to forest managers and for taking the required actions to obtain suitable silviculture treatments. Two of the main wood species used in construction in Spain, Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris, have been studied in order to determine the amount of juvenile wood, which has been identified as a harmful characteristic for its decrease in quality of the physical-mechanical properties of these species. Being relevant for the best quality of timber in the part along the bole where the logs are obtained, the distribution of juvenile wood at different heights and the effect of several silvicultural treatments have had on juvenile wood formation has been considered. The juvenile-mature wood boundary (transition year) was calculated through segmented linear mixed models employing as variables annual latewood density, obtained through micro X-ray densitometry, silvicultural practices, and a drought index. The results show how juvenile and mature wood is distributed along the bole and the proportion of juvenile wood. Centro de Investigación Forestal (CIFOR), Juvenile wood is associated with shrinkage and a high probability of warping and checks in end products, reducing their value and even causing them to be rejected for structural purposes. This work studies the variations in yearly shrinkage caused when wood passes from green to dry state. The methodology proposed is based on the juvenile wood (JW) location using annual shrinkage variations. Pinus nigra Arn. grown using different silviculture techniques was chosen for study because its wood is characterized by severe shrinkage problems. This characteristic is analyzed in the radial and angular directions, of which the latter is a different methodology for evaluating warping problem rather than the commonly used ratio of anisotropy. It takes into account the annual measurements obtained from a disc cut from the tree trunk at various heights. The results were compared with the segregated JW and mature wood (MW) area obtained by radial densitometry pattern variation methodology. The results show that radial shrinkage is higher near the pith but stabilizes earlier (3–7 rings) than angular shrinkage (9–11 rings). Nevertheless, the opposite initial radial pattern occurs in angular shrinkage, which is low near the pith but increases annually towards the bark until it stabilizes. No clear effect of height in the tree when comparing the radial shrinkage patterns obtained along the bole can be defined. Silviculture practices have no significant influence on shrinkage percentage. Shrinkage and densitometry methodologies show differences in the quantification of JW volume percentage between JW and MW estimation. Results show that radial shrinkage pattern methodology, which is associated with warping problems, classifies a higher tree volume as good quality for end uses in comparison to the use of radial densitometry pattern methodology. On the other hand, if classified by radial densitometry pattern variation, warping problems associated with JW should not be a problem when sawn., This study was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through Project RTA2014-00005-00-00. Instituto de Ciencias Forestales (ICIFOR), In-situ assessment of timber members by acoustic measurement usually requires specific procedures (indirect and semidirect measurement) compared with those used in the laboratory (direct) and over longer distances. This research aims to determine which procedure is the most suitable. Acoustic Non-Destructive Testing measurements were taken in 21 150 × 200 mm2 nominal cross-section Salzmann pine structural timber pieces from 9.5 to 11.0 m long from a 1768 structure. Wave velocity was obtained from ToF measured with different sensor arrangements (direct, indirect and semidirect) in different lengths using stress wave and ultrasound. The direct velocity value was very close to non-direct measurements (0.4% higher), while previous research works with shorter pieces (3–4 m) showed larger differences (3.3–5.4%). There were no significant differences between indirect and semidirect measurements when using the same device or between devices, although a steady ratio was observed in the last case. The most predictive velocity procedure was determined by the correlation between static and dynamic modulus of elasticity. The most reliable stiffness prediction was obtained with the global velocity method, taking ToF measurements at distances from 1 to 10 m. 18 Pág. Instituto de Ciencias Forestales (ICIFOR), The aim of this paper is to analyze the mechanical properties of Robinia pseudoacacia L. (black locust), Platanus × hybrida Brot. (London plane), Ulmus pumila L. (Siberian elm), and Populus alba L. (white poplar), estimated using ultrasound wave equipment (USLab y Sylvatest Duo) and impact wave equipment (Microsecond Timer) on standing trees, felled logs and on specimens obtained from different parts of the trees. Bending strength, axial compression strength and tension parallel to grain were determined for each specimen, in order to subsequently correlate the strength and stiffness with the acoustic properties determined in the standing tree. For the relationship between the static modulus of elasticity of the specimens and the dynamic modulus of elasticity determined in standing trees using the USLab, coefficients of determination were found to be between 0.30–0.92, between 0.52 and 0.80 using the Sylvatest Duo and between 0.60 and 0.94 with the Microsecond Timer.
