Acting on the existing city -with a goal of structural transformation- requires clear ideas, a consistent strategy of operation and a strong-willed author, plus the consensus of other participants and institutions. The experience of a Chilean politician over Santiago de Chile in the second half of the 19th Century is a result of such an extraordinary confluence, and it has marked the city’s fate to our days. With the order of the colonial city as a starting point, Vicuña Mackenna visualized a new urban matrix that resulted in a watershed moment for the urban form. A system of annular and radial promenade avenues is laid over the territory and the layers of history, thus shaping a new cultural landscape in the Mapocho valley. Over a period of three years the mayor was able to change the scale and appearance of the capital city and its residential outskirts with a pragmatic set of works (although some of them were not executed) and equally effective management skills. This urban structure was consolidated around the date of the centennial of the independence in 1910. Many other actions were to accompany this effort with contributions added and materialized over this new order, all of them in debt to the original operation., La actuación sobre la ciudad existente -en el horizonte de afrontar una transformación estructural- requiere de ideas claras, una estrategia consistente en sus operaciones y una voluntad potente de parte de su autor, además del consenso con otros actores e instituciones. La experiencia de un político chileno sobre Santiago de Chile en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, da cuenta de esa extraordinaria confluencia que marca los destinos de la ciudad hasta nuestros días. Teniendo como soporte el orden de la ciudad colonial, Vicuña Mackenna visualiza una nueva matriz urbana que constituye un punto de inflexión en la forma urbana. Desde un sistema de avenidas paseo cuyo trazado de geometría anular y radial se superpone al relieve del territorio y capas históricas, se configura un nuevo paisaje cultural sobre el valle del Mapocho. Un conjunto pragmático de obras concretas, no todas ejecutadas, acompañada de una capacidad de gestión igualmente efectiva, le permiten al intendente, cambiar en tres años la escala y visión de la ciudad capital y sus nuevas periferias residenciales, cuya estructura urbana se consolidará hacia el centenario de la independencia en 1910. In the mid-nineteenth century, Chile received the naval astronomical expedition of the United States commanded by Lieutenant James Melville Gilliss, whose purpose responded to the interest of universal science to determine a new measurement of the distance from Earth to the Sun. As a complement to his main mission, Gilliss wrote a description of the physical, economic, social and political characteristics of Chile that he got to know during his stay in our country between 1849 and 1852. As part of the document there is an interesting set of plans and maps of Chile, largely compiled by the astronomer, which has the merit of being made with the current cartographic techniques that illustrate the geographical description of the country that he got to know and that he wanted to show the world. Through the analysis of these materials, this article aims to show the contribution of Gilliss in the development of these cartographies, and how all this contributed to consolidate the identity of Chile as a nation., RESUMEN: A mediados del siglo XIX, Chile recibió la expedición astronómica naval de los Estados Unidos comandada por el teniente James Melville Gilliss, cuyo propósito respondía al in terés de la ciencia universal, como era determinar una nueva medición de la distancia de la Tierra al Sol. Como complemento a su misión principal, Gilliss escribió una descripción de las características físicas, económicas, sociales y políticas del Chile que él conoció durante su permanencia en nuestro país entre 1849 y 1852. Forma parte del documento, un interesante conjunto de planos y mapas de Chile, en gran parte recopilados por el astrónomo, que tienen el mérito de estar confeccionados con las técnicas cartográficas vigentes en ese momento y que ilustran la descripción geográfica del país que le tocó co nocer y que quiso mostrar al mundo. A través del análisis de estos materiales, el presente artículo se propone mostrar el aporte de Gilliss en la elaboración de estas cartografías, y cómo todo ello contribuyó a consolidar la identidad de Chile como nación.

[EN] This paper explores the particular way of drawing the architecture Le Corbusier: a synthesis of different graphic traditions acquired in his youth and which he was able to integrate coherently in a very personal style. Trying to define his way of drawing, William JR Curtis assimilated it to a system of shorthand notes and considered it equipped with an alchemical power. It is a fact that this way of drawing opened a fruitful approach to studying and generating architecture. This paper attempts to clarify one of his qualities: the ability to situate, putting into play the notion of horizon. As it is known, the concept took its precise form with the emergence of Renaissance perspective, but in the case of Le Corbusier it was reformulated from his first experiences with the panoramic views, raising it to the fundamental reference of the relationship of man and world, and thus returning it to historical, cultural and existential dimensions, [ES] Este trabajo indaga en la particular forma de dibujar la arquitectura de Le Corbusier: una síntesis de distintas tradiciones gráficas que adquirió en su juventud y que fue capaz de integrar coherentemente en un estilo muy personal. Intentándola definir, William J. R. Curtis lo asimiló a un sistema de apuntes taquigráficos y la consideró dotada de un poder alquímico. Es un hecho que esta forma de dibujar abrió una vía fecunda de aproximación a la arquitectura, tanto para estudiarla como para generarla. En este trabajo intentamos precisar una de sus cualidades: la capacidad de situar, que se verifica a partir de la noción de horizonte. Como se sabe, el concepto de horizonte tomó una forma precisa con el surgimiento de la perspectiva renacentista, pero que en el caso de Le Corbusier es reformulada a partir de sus primeras experiencias con las visiones amplias, paisajísticas, elevándolo a referencia fundamental del hombre en el mundo, remitiéndolo por tanto a dimensiones históricas, culturales, existenciales

En este artículo se exponen dos aspectos centrales del viaje de Ch-E. Jeanneret a Italia, en 1907, en la que fue su primera experiencia de aprendizaje viajando, es decir, a partir de la observación directa de las obras de arte que le interesaba reconocer, pero aún guiada por los dictámenes de su maestro, Charles L'Eplattenier, el cual, a su vez, en aquella época estaba muy influido por los criterios estéticos y de enseñanza del dibujo de John Ruskin. Un primer aspecto, se refiere a su preferencia por obras de arte de la Edad Media, y cuyo acento estaba en la ornamentación. El segundo, tenía que ver con una particular dimensión paisajística del lugar al cual se desplazaba: la Toscana, que llevaba completamente idealizada, desde el imaginario romántico. A partir de estas dos instancias, podemos sintetizar la índole de sus intereses de juventud, como así mismo, la forma en que se aproximaba al mundo. Por tanto, el objetivo de este artículo es revelar aspectos por mucho tiempo desconocidos relativos a la etapa de formación de uno de los arquitectos más influyentes del siglo XX., This article explores two central aspects of the journey by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret to Italy in 1907. It was his first experience of learning through the direct observation of the art works that he was interested in seeing while travelling. At this stage, he was still guided by the opinions of his teacher, Charles L'Eplattenier, who at the time was very influenced by the aesthetic criteria and the drawing teachings of John Ruskin. The first aspect relates to the preference of Jeanneret for works of art of the Middle-Ages, the accent of which was on ornamentation. The second relates to the particular scenic dimension of the place to which he travelled, Tuscany, which had been completely idealized by romantic imagination. From these two aspects we can synthesise the nature of his youthful interests and also the way in which he approached the world. Therefore, the objective of this article is to reveal long unknown aspects relating to a learning period of one of the most influential architects of the XXth century.
