ABSTRACT Introduction: Elevated plasma levels of lipids are considered the main modifiable risk factor for the cardiovascular disease. The Point-of-care testing (POCT) method provides quick results and allows anticipating diagnosis and treatment. Objective: To compare the lipid profile results obtained from both POCT and the traditional clinical laboratory. Methods: Fasting blood samples were collected from 111 patients who sought, for any reason, the private medical offices participating on this study. Capillary whole blood samples were analyzed in CardioChek® PA (CCPA) equipment, and the serum samples were analyzed in clinical laboratories (LAB) that have internal and external quality control, with certification. The mean values of each variable of the lipid profile obtained by CCPA and LAB were calculated. Linear regression was used to determine the existence of correlation between the two methods. Results: We observed a positive correlation between the values obtained by CCPA and LAB for all variables of the lipid profile. Our data, extracted from the routine use of CCPA in private medical offices, supports a substantial contribution of the POCT methodology in the detection of the main cardiovascular risk factors. Conclusion: The POCT CardioChek® PA Analyzer is an easy-to-operate tool, with adequate analytical performance and a good correlation with the results of the conventional laboratory method, therefore, considered a reliable method.

The present study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of aqueous extracts of the mixture of spices used as accompanying soup of braised fish against multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria isolated from raw and braised fish collected in the city of Bangangté, Cameroon. A survey was conducted in the city of Bangangté to diagnose the braising fish processes. Pathogens were isolated from raw and braised fish samples collected in fish farms and selling points, and their susceptibility to 16 commonly used antibiotics was tested using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. The aqueous extracts of spices’ formulations used as accompanying soup of braised fish were tested against MDR isolates using the well diffusion method. The results revealed that 13 spices are used in the preparation of accompanying soups of braised fish. Three formulations were identified with mbongo, clove and prekeses as the main differential spices. These formulations were either heated at 100 °C/30 min (process 1) or not (process 2) before being served to consumers’. Fifty-five strains belonging to six species (Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Paratyphi, Escherichia coli, Escherichia vulneralis, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus spp.) were isolated from the different samples. Forty-four isolates were resistant to several antibiotics with Multiple Antibiotic Resistance indexes ranging from 0.18 to 0.81. IntroductionThe severe Asian form of huanglongbing (HLB), a vascular disease associated with the phloem-limited bacterium ‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’, is transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) Diaphorina citri. Disease impacts are known for sweet oranges and acid limes but not lemons.MethodsIn a five-year study (2017–2021) we compared yield and fruit quality between naturally-infected and healthy 5-yr-old trees of Sicilian lemon ‘Femminello’, and shoot phenology on both lemon and ‘Valencia’ orange, both grafted onto ‘Swingle’ citrumelo, grown in southeastern São Paulo State, Brazil. HLB severity (percentage of tree canopy area with HLB symptoms) was assessed every 3–4 months, fruit yield and quality in May (2017 to 2019) or June/July (2020-2021), and vegetative and reproductive shoots fortnightly on 50-cm-long branches. The development of ACP on one-year-old seedlings of five lemon varieties, ‘Tahiti’ acid lime, ‘Valencia’ orange, and orange jasmine was evaluated.ResultsSymptoms increased from 11% in 2017 to 64% in 2021, and a monomolecular model estimated 10 years for symptoms to occupy >90% of the tree canopy. On average, production of trees with symptom on 20%, 50% or 80% of the canopy respectively dropped by 18%, 38%, and 53% compared to healthy trees. Fruits of symptomatic branches of lemons were 4.22% lighter and the number of dropped fruits did not correlate with symptom severity. Flushing on symptomatic branches started earlier by 15 to 55 days as compared to the healthy branches of lemon and orange. On diseased trees, vegetative and reproductive shoots respectively increased by 24.5% and 17.5% on lemon and by 67.2% and 70.6% on sweet orange, but fruit set was reduced by 12.9% and 19.7% on lemon and orange trees, respectively. ACP reproduced similarly on all tested plants.DiscussionThe fast symptom progress, significant yield reduction, and earlier flushing on diseased trees, providing conditions highly favorable for the pathogen to spread, reinforce the need of prompt diseased tree removal and frequent ACP preventive control to manage HLB in lemons as in any other citrus crop.

In the last two decades, statin therapy has proved to be the most potent isolated therapy for attenuation of cardiovascular risk. Its frequent use has been seen as one of the most important elements for the reduction of cardiovascular mortality in developed countries. However, the recurrent incidence of muscle symptoms in statin users raised the possibility of causal association, leading to a disease entity known as statin associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). Mechanistic studies and clinical trials, specifically designed for the study of SAMS have allowed a deeper understanding of the natural history and accurate incidence. This set of information becomes essential to avoid an unnecessary risk of severe forms of SAMS. At the same time, this concrete understanding of SAMS prevents overdiagnosis and an inadequate suspension of one of the most powerful prevention strategies of our times. In this context, the Luso-Latin American Consortium gathered all available information on the subject and presents them in detail in this document as the basis for the identification and management of SAMS. A educação contemporânea demanda mudanças no currículo escolar para conseguir superar a fragmentação e integrar as disciplinas curriculares. No Brasil, para atender a tal demanda, os Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais para o Ensino Médio organizam o currículo escolar por áreas do conhecimento. Embora pareça simples agrupar componentes curriculares, na prática, desenvolver um trabalho por agrupamento é complexo, pois cada forma de trabalho, disciplinar, multidisciplinar, interdisciplinar ou transdisciplinar, possui orientações e princípios teóricofilosóficos distintos; além disso, é preciso conciliar objetos de ensino historicamente trabalhados isoladamente. Nesse sentido, a partir de uma pesquisa qualitativa, documental e bibliográfica, refletimos sobre o objeto comum à área de Linguagens e suas tecnologias, com base em documentos oficiais, tecendo algumas considerações sobre o trabalho possível de ser desenvolvido.

Objective: We examined whether skeletal muscle overexpression of PGC-1α1 or PGC-1α4 affected myokine secretion and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) formation. Methods: A microfluidic device was used to model endocrine signaling and NMJ formation between primary mouse myoblast-derived myotubes and embryonic stem cell-derived motor neurons. Differences in hydrostatic pressure allowed for fluidic isolation of either cell type or unidirectional signaling in the fluid phase. Myotubes were transduced to overexpress PGC-1α1 or PGC-1α4, and myokine secretion was quantified using a proximity extension assay. Morphological and functional changes in NMJs were measured by fluorescent microscopy and by monitoring muscle contraction upon motor neuron stimulation. Results: Skeletal muscle transduction with PGC-1α1, but not PGC-1α4, increased NMJ formation and size. PGC-1α1 increased muscle secretion of neurturin, which was sufficient and necessary for the effects of muscle PGC-1α1 on NMJ formation. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that neurturin is a mediator of PGC-1α1-dependent retrograde signaling from muscle to motor neurons. The article investigates the effect of systematically combined knowledge and higher than knowledge level cognitive objectives on the acquisition of science learning in an inquiry environment that is full of potential for higher level cognitive functioning. A number of individual differences have been found to interact with objectives. Evidences garnered from behavioral statements can be used to cross-check subjective judgments regarding the acquisition of more complex, more generalizable and higher level goals of learning. Under inquiry-oriented instructional sequences, which are intended to elicit both knowledge and higher than knowledge cognitive functioning, the use of behaviorally-stated learning facilitates immediate learning.
