Context Studies using experimental models have demonstrated that prebiotics are involved in antiosteoporotic mechanisms. Objective This study was conducted to determine the impact of supplementation with prebiotics in the basal diet of ovariectomized rats with induced osteoporosis as a preclinical model. Methods A comprehensive systematic search was carried out in the electronic databases PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scielo, and Google through March 2022 for studies that investigated the impact of prebiotics on bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone biomechanics. Results The search returned 844 complete articles, abstracts, or book chapters. After detailed screening, 8 studies met the inclusion criteria. Rats (n = 206), were randomly divided between control and treatment groups. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) with the 95%CIs were used to estimate the combined effect size. Compared with the control group, dietary intake of prebiotics significantly increased bone density in the BMD subgroups, with WMDs as follows: 0.03 g/cm3, 95%CI, 0.01–0.05, P Conclusion Prebiotics improve indicators of osteoporosis, BMD, BMC, and bone biomechanics in ovariectomized rats. Context Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic, relapsing diseases that compromise life quality and expectancy. The increased incidence and prevalence of these diseases reinforce the need for research on prevention, therapy, and management innovations. Synbiotics (ie, probiotic plus prebiotic combinations) are suggested as an alternative or complementary therapy to conventional treatments for inflammatory bowel disease. Objective The aim for this systematic review was to gather and analyze data from randomized controlled trials to provide more information to increase the current evidence level about the safety and efficacy of synbiotic use as a supplemental treatment for ulcerative colitis. Data Sources Searches were performed in the Medline, Science Direct, Scielo, Scopus, and Embase databases between January 2017 and March 2019, using the keywords “colitis” and ”synbiotics”. Data Extraction The data extraction method performed for each trial was based on the recommendations of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials for randomized clinical trials. The trials included in this meta-analysis presented low risk of bias, based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions guidelines. Data Analysis The results demonstrated that synbiotics significantly improved colonic endoscopic and histologic scores, the Clinical Activity Index, serum C-reactive protein levels, intestinal microbiota, Bowel Habits Index, and levels of messenger RNAs, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1α, interleukin-10, and myeloperoxidase in the patients. In addition, the use of synbiotics increased probiotic microorganisms, reduced proinflammatory colonic cytokines, and elevated anti-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusions Therefore, the results of this meta-analysis reinforce the evidence that synbiotics provide benefits to patients when used as an alternative or complementary therapy for those with ulcerative colitis.

Introduction: Cadmium is a heavy metal found in the environment that is used industrially; however, it also causes hepato- and nephrotoxic effects. Objective: To evaluate the effect of drinking water pH on the hepato- and nephrotoxicity caused by chronic cadmium poisoning. Material and Methods: We used 90 adult, male Wistar albino rats divided into 6 groups (n = 15): GC5 received a solution of cadmium chloride in drinking water with an acidic pH (pH 5.0); GC7 received a solution of cadmium chloride (400 mg/L) in drinking water with a neutral pH (pH 7.0 water); GC8 received a solution of cadmium chloride in water with an alkaline pH (pH 8.0); GWC5 received drinking water with an acidic pH (pH 5.0); GWC7 received drinking water with a neutral pH (pH 7.0); GWC8 received drinking water with an alkaline pH (pH 8.0). Smoking is one of the main risk factor for periodontal disease, increasing its prevalence and severity. Probiotics emerged as an alternative for the prevention and treatment of many diseases, since it can modulate the host immune response and modify the modify the microbiome. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of probiotic administration on the periodontal tissues in rats exposed to cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI). Forty rats were allocated into the following groups (n=10): group C (control, without CSI and probiotic); group PROB (control+probiotic); group CSI (CSI) and group CSI+PROB (CSI+probiotic). Groups PROB and CSI+PROB received 2g of an association of probiotic microorganisms incorporated into the feed during 6 months. Groups CSI and CSI+PROB were exposed to CSI for 60 min daily. After six months all the animals were euthanized and the hemi-mandibles were collected and processed for microcomputed tomography analyses. SUMMARY: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of growth hormone (GH) and muscle strength training (ST) on the composition of bone tissue of Wistar rats through Raman spectroscopy. In total, 40 male rats were randomly distributed into four groups: (N = 10) control (C), control with the application of GH (GHC), strength training (T), and strength training with the application of GH (GHT). The training consisted of four series of 10 water jumps, performed three times a week, with an overload corresponding to 50 % of body weight and duration of four weeks. GH was applied at a dose of 0.2 IU / kg in each animal three times a week and every other day. After four weeks, the animals were euthanized and the right femurs collected for analysis of the bone structure. Raman spectroscopy (ER) was used to observe the following compounds from their respective bands: Calcium Carbonate-Triglycerides (fatty acids) 1073 cm-1, Collagen type I 509 cm-1, Bone-DNA Phosphate (Protein) 589 cm-1, Phosphate Phospholipids 1078 cm-1. In this scenario, the use of enzyme products in ruminant nutrition may be an important alternative to meet future increased demands for animal products with reduced environmental impacts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of treating forage with a fibrolytic enzymes extract (FEE), produced by Trichoderma reesei, on animal performance, blood biochemical parameters, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and enteric CH4 production of growing lambs. Nineteen Santa Inês growing lambs were divided into two groups: control (CTL) and enzyme (ENZ). The animals were fed with 700 g/kg of tifton-85 hay and 300 g/kg (as fed basis) of concentrate mixture for 73 days. The FEE was manually applied 24 h before each feed supply. Initially, animals were kept in individual pens for the growth performance trial (15 days of adaptation plus 45 for data collection), then were taken to metabolic cages (seven days) and to gas measurement chambers (six days) for the metabolism assay and determination of CH4 production, respectively. No effects (P > 0.05) were observed on dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion ratio. However, ENZ animals showed higher proportion of body weight gain (PBWG) when considering the entire growth performance period (P < 0.05). Analysis of blood parameters indicated that FEE did not impair animals’ health. Lambs fed forages treated with FEE showed 12% higher acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestibility (P < 0.05) and 20% lower enteric CH4 yield (i.e. per kg of digestible organic matter intake) (P < 0.05). Microbial protein synthesis, pH, ammonia nitrogen, short-chain fatty acids concentration and protozoa population were not affected by the addition of FEE (P > 0.05). The results indicated that FEE can be used in diets of lambs, leading to higher PBWG, improving ADF digestibility and reducing CH4 yield, suggesting its potential suitability as a strategy to increase animal productivity and contribute to the mitigation of enteric CH4 production, especially when animals are fed poor-quality forages. Many chronic conditions, including smoking, have been shown to be associated with modifications in the gut microbiota and to remedy the effects of these changes, functional foods such as prebiotics have shown beneficial effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate changes in the bacterial population of Escherichia coli in the intestinal microbiota of rats submitted to passive smoke and to the supplementation of prebiotics incorporated into the basal diet. The animals were divided into: Control Group (CG) = basal diet; Smoking Control Group (GCT) = basal diet with exposure to smoking; Prebiotic Group (GP) = basal diet incorporated with 1g of Immunowall® per kg of diet; Prebiotic Tobacco Group (GPT) = basal diet incorporated with 1g of ImmunowallTM per kg of diet with exposure to smoking. The animals were exposed to the smoke twice a day for 180 days. The obtained data were analyzed through the nonparametric Kruklla-Wallis test. Bacterial populations were amplified by real-time PCR. The results of this study revealed a significant decrease (p = 0.04 and p = 0.01) in Escherichia coli population in the group of animals supplemented with prebiotics in the intestinal microbiota of rats exposed and not exposed to cigarette smoke reinforcing the modulating effect of potential pathogens on the intestinal microbiota by functional foods.

BACKGROUND The present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional, physiological and biochemical effects of dietary supplementation of an association of probiotic bacteria in rats intoxicated with chromium (VI). Ninety-six male rats, recently weaned, were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 12): Control, DK12, DK24 and DK36 (0, 0.12, 0.24 and 0.36 g kg-1 of K2 Cr2 O7 incorporated in the basal feed, respectively) and groups Prob, DK12 + Prob, DK24 + Prob and DK36 + Prob received a progressive dose of 0, 0.12, 0.24 and 0.36 g kg-1 of K2 Cr2 O7 incorporated in the basal feed and supplemented with 0.02 g kg-1 of an association of probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecium, Bifidobacterium thermophilum and Bifidobacterium longum). RESULTS After 90 days, we observed significant (P < 0.05) and dose-dependent alterations from incorporation of increasing doses of chromium (VI) related to nutritional, physiological and biochemical parameters. These changes were attenuated (P < 0.05) with probiotic supplementation. CONCLUSION Supplementation with probiotics in the diet beneficially modified the nutritional and physiological parameters, as well as hepatic, renal, glycemic and lipid profiles, of animals intoxicated with increasing doses of K2 Cr2 O7 . © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Chromium is a common mineral in the earth's crust and can be released into the environment from anthropogenic sources. Intake of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) through drinking water and food causes toxic effects, leading to serious diseases, and is a commonly reported environmental problem. Microorganisms can mitigate or prevent the toxic effects caused by heavy metals in addition to having effective resistance mechanisms to prevent cell damage and bind to these metals, sequestering them from the cell surface and removing them from the body. Species of Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Bacillus and Bifidobacterium present in the human mouth and gut and in fermented foods have the ability to bind and detoxify some of these substances. This review address the primary topics related to Cr(VI) poisoning in animals and humans and the use of probiotics as a way to mitigate or prevent the toxic effects caused by Cr(VI). Further advances in the genetic knowledge of such microorganisms may lead to discoveries which will clarify the most active microorganisms that act as bioprotectants in bodies exposed to Cr(VI) and are an affordable option for people and animals intoxicated by the oral route. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of probiotics (PROB) on the progression of experimentally induced oral and intestinal mucositis in rats immunosuppressed by chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil: 5-FU). Twenty-four rats were divided into the following groups (n=6): GC (control), GPROB, G5FU and G5-FU/PROB. Groups GPROB and G5-FU/PROB received 1g of probiotic incorporated into each 100g of feed ( Bacillus subtilis , Bifidobacterium bifidum, Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacilllus acidophilus), beginning 30 days before oral mucositis induction. Groups G5FU and G5-FU/PROB received 60 mg/kg of 5-FU on days 0 and 2. The left oral mucosa of each animal was irritated by mechanical trauma (days 1 and 2). On days 3 and 7, three animals from each group were sacrificed, and their oral mucosa and small intestine were biopsied and processed for histopathological analysis. Groups G5-FU and G5-FU/PROB showed ulcerated oral lesions at day 3, with progression in group G5-FU and regression in group G5-FU/PROB at day 7. Histologically, less severe signs of inflammation in the oral mucosa were observed in group G5-FU/PROB than in group G5-FU. Regarding the intestine, villus-related defects of lesser magnitude were observed in group G5-FU/PROB, compared with group G5-FU. Group GPROB showed greater villus height than group GC. It can be concluded that probiotic supplementation reduced oral and intestinal inflammation in immunosuppressed rats with experimentally induced mucositis, and may protect the intestine from changes induced by chemotherapy, thus contributing to overall health.Keywords: Drug Therapy; Intestines; Mucositis; Stomatitis; Probiotics

O presente trabalho objetivou determinar a atividade sérica dos microminerais ferro, cobre, zinco e manganês em 30 equinos atletas da raça Puro-sangue Lusitano (PSL), antes e depois de exercícios, atestados por avaliações clínicas e laboratoriais. Amostras de sangue foram colhidas, antes e imediatamente após 20 minutos de exercício físico de trote e galope suaves realizados em pista de areia, para a realização das dosagens dos microminerais. A concentração dos microelementos foi determinada por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica. O objetivo deste estudo foi ajustar o método espectrofotométrico da 1,5-difenilcarbazida à determinação do crômio em fezes, como marcador biológico, adequando-o à rotina laboratorial. Fatores que poderiam exercer interferência na transformação do crômio (III) à crômio (VI) foram testados, como a recuperação do metal, quantidade de amostra, quantidade e ordem de emprego dos ácidos oxidantes da digestão úmida, temperatura e tempo de digestão e perda por volatilização do crômio como cloreto de cromila, porém não se determinou estatisticamente interferência destes fatores. No método ajustado, a amostra é digerida pela clássica mistura ácida nítrica/perclórica, levando a oxidação do crômio (III) a crômio (VI), e alíquota do extrato diluído é usado para reação com 1,5-difenilcarbazida; as absorbâncias são medidas a 550nm, utilizando-se de cubetas de um centímetro de caminho óptico, contra prova em branco conduzida simultaneamente. Dicromato de potássio foi empregado como substância de referência para obtenção da curva padrão na faixa de 0,25 - 2,5mg.mL-1 de Cr2O3 (1mg Cr2O3 º 1,9355mg K2Cr2O7).This work aims at adjusting the spectrophotometric method of 1,5-diphenylcarbazide for the determination of chromium in feces, as a biological marker. Factors that could interfere with the transformation of chromium (III) into chromium (VI) were tested, as the metal recovery, the sample amount, the amount and the order of use of the oxidant acids of the wet digestion, digestion temperature and digestion time, loss of chromium by volatilization as chromyl chlorid. However the interference of these factors were not statistically determined. In the adjusted method, the sample is classically digested by nitric/perchloric acid mixture leading to the oxidation of chromium (III) to chromium (VI), and an aliquot of the diluted extract is used for reaction with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide; absorbance was measured at 550nm, using 1cm path length optical cuvettes. Potassium dichromate was used as a standard substance to obtain the standard curve ranging from 0.25mg.mL-1 to 2.5mg.mL-1 of Cr2O3 (1mg Cr2O3 º 1.9355mg K2Cr2O7).

Fatores que poderiam exercer interferência na transformação do crômio (III) à crômio (VI) foram testados, como a recuperação do metal, quantidade de amostra, quantidade e ordem de emprego dos ácidos oxidantes da digestão úmida, temperatura e tempo de digestão e perda por volatilização do crômio como cloreto de cromila, porém não se determinou estatisticamente interferência destes fatores. No método ajustado, a amostra é digerida pela clássica mistura ácida nítrica/perclórica, levando a oxidação do crômio (III) a crômio (VI), e alíquota do extrato diluído é usado para reação com 1,5-difenilcarbazida; as absorbâncias são medidas a 550nm, utilizando-se de cubetas de um centímetro de caminho óptico, contra prova em branco conduzida simultaneamente. Dicromato de potássio foi empregado como substância de referência para obtenção da curva padrão na faixa de 0,25 - 2,5mg.mL-1 de Cr2O3 (1mg Cr2O3 º 1,9355mg K2Cr2O7). This work aims at adjusting the spectrophotometric method of 1,5-diphenylcarbazide for the determination of chromium in feces, as a biological marker. Factors that could interfere with the transformation of chromium (III) into chromium (VI) were tested, as the metal recovery, the sample amount, the amount and the order of use of the oxidant acids of the wet digestion, digestion temperature and digestion time, loss of chromium by volatilization as chromyl chlorid. However the interference of these factors were not statistically determined. In the adjusted method, the sample is classically digested by nitric/perchloric acid mixture leading to the oxidation of chromium (III) to chromium (VI), and an aliquot of the diluted extract is used for reaction with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide; absorbance was measured at 550nm, using 1cm path length optical cuvettes. Potassium dichromate was used as a standard substance to obtain the standard curve ranging from 0.25mg.mL-1 to 2.5mg.mL-1 of Cr2O3 (1mg Cr2O3 º 1.9355mg K2Cr2O7). Com o objetivo de estudar as concentrações de zinco da sola do casco de bovinos com e sem lesões podais, suplementados ou não com levedura seca, foram selecionadas e examinadas 60 vacas, escolhidas aleatoriamente, de um rebanho de 150 animais. Formaram-se quatro grupos de 15 animais, sendo o primeiro com animais com lesões podais e suplementados com levedura, o segundo com animais com lesões podais e sem suplementação de levedura, o terceiro com animais sem lesões podais e suplementados com levedura e o quarto com animais sem lesões podais e sem a suplementação de levedura. As concentrações de zinco da sola do casco foram determinadas por espectrometria de absorção atômica com chama (AAS). A sensibilidade do método espectrofotométrico da s-difenilcarbazida de determinação do crômio permite que esse metal possa ser determinado em teores e em massas de amostras tão pequenas que as concentrações atualmente usadas de óxido de crômio (III) como marcador externo em ensaios biológicos poderiam ser drasticamente diminuídas. Utilizando-se do piauçu (Leporinus macrocephalus) para um estudo sobre o coeficiente de digestibilidade aparente (CDA) da fração protéica, seis níveis de óxido de crômio (III) - 0,01% - 0,02% - 0,03% - 0,05% - 0,1% e 0,2% - foram incorporados em dietas isoprotéica e isoenergética, objetivando-se verificar se o cálculo do CDA seria afetado pela variação do teor do marcador. Os seis tratamentos foram dispostos em um delineamento em blocos inteiramente casualisados, sendo as fezes coletadas durante 16 dias. Verificou-se que os resultados do coeficiente de digestibilidade aparente da fração protéica não apresentaram diferenças estatísticas significativas devidas aos teores incorporados do marcador à ração e aos dias de coleta. Conseqüentemente, e em experimentos dessa natureza, nada impede que seja reduzido o teor de óxido de crômio (III) ao menos até 0,01%: além da economia relativa ao consumo do mesmo e da facilidade na manipulação de menor quantidade de amostras de fezes, o método espectrofotométrico da s-difenilcarbazida permite dosar esse nível (e até menor do que 0,01%) de modo simples e rápido, com precisão e exatidão.The objective of this study was to reduce the level of the biological marker Cr2O3 in animal diets, due to the sensibility of the sdiphenylcarbazide spectrophotometric method for chromium determination in feces, recently developed. Six levels of marker, chromium (III) oxide (0.01% - 0.02% - 0.03% - 0.05% - 0.1% and 0.2%), were incorporated into isoproteic and isoenergetic diets, for the apparent digestibility assay of the "piauçu" (Leporinus macrocephalus), in a design of entirely randomized groups. Feces were collected during sixteen days. The statistical analysis did not show significant differences in the apparent digestibility of the proteinic fraction due to the concentration levels of the marker incorporated into the diets and the collection days. Consequently, there is nothing to stop us from reducing Cr2O3 rate to at least 0.01% in these digestibility assays: spectrophotometry of sdiphenilcarbazide allows us to determine this level or even smaller levels in an accurate, simple, and quick manner.

Cadmium is a heavy metal that is widely used in industry and can cause tumours in multiple organs. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effect of water pH in the genesis of cadmium-induced cancer. We divided 98 male Wistar rats into 7 groups: group A - 15 rats that received cadmium chloride (CdCl₂- 400 mg/L) in their drinking water at a neutral pH of 7.0; group B - 15 rats that received CdCl₂(400 mg/L) in their drinking water at an acidic pH of 5.0; group C - 15 rats that received CdCl₂(400 mg/L) in their drinking water at a basic pH of 8.0; group D - 15 rats that received water at an acidic pH of 5.0; group E - 15 rats that received water at a basic pH of 8.0; group F - 15 rats that received water at a neutral pH of 7.0; and group G - 8 rats that were subcutaneously injected with a single dose of cyclophosphamide (50 mg/kg). Groups A through F were euthanised 6 months after the start of the experiment and group G was euthanised 24 hours after cyclophosphamide injection. We collected the liver, kidneys, pancreas, prostate, seminal vesicles and testes for histopathological analysis and the bone marrow for micronuclei testing. In all of the groups, neither neoplastic lesions nor an increase in micronuclei (p0.05) were observed in the liver, kidney, pancreas, seminal vesicles and testes. We found that animals exposed to cadmium had grade one prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, but this was found more frequently in animals from group B (p0.05). The acidic pH increased the formation of pre-neoplastic lesions in the prostate glands of cadmium-exposed animals.

A resposta imune humoral induzida pela vacina contra a raiva produzida em cérebros de camundongos recém-nascidos foi estudada em 23 cães e o teste de soroneutralização em camundongos foi usado para avaliação dos níveis de anticorpos rábicos. Um grupo com 10 animais recebeu vacina conservada de 2 a 8°C e apresentou os seguintes resultados: após 30 dias da vacinação 6 (60%) amostras responderam ao teste; após 180 dias 4 (40%) e após 360 dias apenas 1 (10%). O outro grupo com 13 cães recebeu vacina previamente congelada e somente 2 (15,4%) amostras no dia 30 apresentaram resposta satisfatória; os demais períodos (180 e 360) após a vacinação, não foi encontrado título. A análise estatística dos dados referentes a cada uma das variáveis consideradas no estudo foi efetuada segundo a técnica de análise de variância seguida por Tuckey e indicaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos. The immune humoral response induced by the rabies vaccine produced in suckling mouse brain was studied in 23 dogs. The mouse neutralization test (MNT) was used to evaluate the level of rabies antibodies. Ten dogs received vaccine stored at 2 to 8°C, showing the following results: 30 days after vaccination, six samples (60%) responded to the MNT; 180 days after vaccination, 4 samples (40%); and 360 days after vaccination, only one sample (10%). The remaining 13 dogs received previously frozen vaccine and 30 days after vaccination, only two samples (l5.4%) responded to the MNT. No titers were detected 180 and 360 days after vaccination. Statistical analysis of each variable used Tuckey analysis of variance, which showed statistically significant differences between the two groups.

Esse estudo avaliou o efeito da suplementação de uma associação de microrganismos probióticos, adicionados à mistura mineral em diferentes doses, na produção de anticorpos séricos antirrábicos em bovinos primovacinados. Os Quarenta e dois bovinos Nelore machos, com idade de 12 meses, foram divididos em três grupos (n=14): grupo controle (GC) recebeu 70 gramas de mistura mineral/animal/dia; grupos probiótico 2 gramas (G2P) e 8 gramas (G8P) receberam 70 gramas de mistura mineral/animal/dia adicionados respectivamente de 2 e 8 gramas de probióticos (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecium, Bifidobacterium thermophilum e Bifidobacterium longum). títulos individuais de anticorpos antirrábicos foram determinados por meio da técnica de soroneutralização em células baseado no rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT). Os resultados obtidos foram comparados pelo teste t não pareado, com 5% de nível de significância. Houve diferenças estatísticas significativas entre as médias de concentrações séricas entre os grupos GC e G8P, após 30 e 60 dias da primovacinação e após 60 dias, somente o G8P manteve 100% com títulos de anticorpos protetores mínimos. Houve também melhora na produção de anticorpos no grupo G2P em relação ao GC, após 30 e 60 dias, porém não significativa. Conclui-se que as doses crescentes de probiótico adicionadas na mineral interferiram beneficamente na resposta imune humoral antirrábica, determinada pela concentração sérica de anticorpos, assim como permitiu a manutenção por um período maior os títulos protetores mínimos nos bovinos primovacinados.

Este estudo avaliou o efeito do probiótico, Proenzime®, adicionado ao sal mineral, no peso de bovinos mantidos em regime de pasto. Utilizou-se 30 bovinos, machos inteiros da raça Nelore (Bos indicus) com aproximadamente 10 meses de idade em pastagem de Panicum maximum e suplementados com sal mineral (GC: n = 15 animais) e sal mineral adicionado de probiótico (GT = 4 g de probiótico/dia; n= 15 animais). Se estudio el efecto de la natacion en las caracteristicas morfologicas, niveles de hipertrofia y las adaptaciones metabolicas y contractiles de diferentes tipos de fibras en el musculo recto del abdomen de ratas. Las ratas fueron asignadas en tres grupos (N = 5 cada uno): a) natacion por 1 hora dos veces a la semana (2x/s), b) 1 hora, cinco veces por semana (5x/s) por nueve semanas consecutivas y c) sin natacion (control). El peso corporal se incremento en las ratas 2x/s y disminuyo en 5x/s. El diametro de las fibras musculares aumento en ambos grupos entrenados, con mayores valores en las ratas 2x/s. El ejercicio aerobico incremento las fibras de oxidacion lenta (OL) + las fibras de glicolisis oxidativa rapida (GOR) y disminuyeron las fibras de glicolisis rapida (GR). Ademas, las fibras OL aumentaron y las fibras GOR y GR disminuyeron en las ratas entrenadas. Se observo una pequena atrofia y deshidratacion de las fibras. Estos resultados corroboran que la practica de la natacion incrementa el metabolismo aerobico, las fibras de contraccion lenta y la oxidacion. PROBIOTICS are preparations from the culture of live microorganisms. They have been shown to have beneficial effects when used as growth promoters (Ferreira and others 2009) and as immunostimulants (Arenas and others 2009) in calves. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a probiotic preparation added to the mineral mix given to young cattle with regard to liveweight gain and serum cortisol concentration. The study used 40 male Nelore cattle, approximately 18 months old, fed on Brachiaria brizantha under a rotational grazing system and divided into two experimental groups of 20 animals. Animals in the experimental group (probiotic group) were supplemented with 4.0 g/animal/day of probiotic (Proenzime; EMBRAUPEC), added to the mineral mix given to the cattle. A preocupação com a segurança alimentar e o aquecimento global pressiona a cadeia de produção de ruminantes a buscar alternativas para incremento na produtividade e redução nas emissões dos gases de efeito estufa, uma vez que essa atividade é responsável por grande parte das emissões de metano (CH4) entérico. O desenvolvimento de produtos enzimáticos para uso na nutrição de ruminantes torna-se de grande valia para contribuir com a demanda alimentar e reduzir os impactos ambientais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o uso de um extrato de enzimas fibrolíticas (EEF), composto por endoglucanases, exoglucanases e xilanases, produzido pelo fungo Trichoderma reesei utilizando como substrato resíduos da indústria canavieira, sobre a digestibilidade, fermentação ruminal e desempenho de ovinos em crescimento, conduzidos através de dois experimentos. No experimento 1, foi avaliado a adição de doses crescentes (0, 10, 100, 1000 e 10000 µL g-1 de substrato) do EEF sobre a produção total de gases e CH4, degradabilidade e fermentação ruminal de três forrageiras tropicais (Cynodon spp., Panicum maximum e Cenchrus ciliares L.) em um ensaio in vitro, com o objetivo de verificar a possibilidade de uso do EEF na dieta de ruminantes sem prejudicar os parâmetros fermentativos. Verificou-se que os resultados foram dependentes da dose e do substrato utilizados. Contudo, foi verificado aumento na produção total de gases e CH4 e na degradabilidade de todas as forrageiras utilizadas com a dose mais alta do EEF. Conclui-se que o EEF pode ser utilizado na dieta de ruminantes como alternativa para incremento na degradabilidade de forrageiras tropicais. O experimento 2 foi dividido em duas fases conduzidas com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito do EEF sobre a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes, fermentação ruminal, desempenho animal e produção de CH4 entérico de 19 ovinos em crescimento divididos em dois grupos experimentais, controle (CTL) e enzima (ENZ), recebendo dieta composta de 70% de feno de Tifton-85 e 30% de mistura concentrada. O EEF foi aplicado diretamente no feno 24 horas antes do fornecimento da refeição. Na Fase I, avaliou-se o efeito de doses crescentes (0, 20, 40 e 80 µL) do EEF sobre a hidrólise da fibra e posteriormente a dose com melhor resposta foi utilizada nos estudos de digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes e fermentação ruminal. A dose de 40 µL foi selecionada para ser utilizada no ensaio in vivo, pois apresentou melhores respostas sobre a redução nas frações fibrosas. Os animais suplementados com o EEF apresentaram maior digestibilidade da fibra em detergente ácido e maior produção de valerato. Na Fase II, foi avaliado o efeito do EEF sobre o desempenho, saúde e produção de CH4 entérico de ovinos em crescimento. Os procedimentos utilizados foram os mesmos descritos na Fase I. A suplementação do EEF proporcionou maior percentual médio de ganho de peso e menor produção de CH4 entérico por kg de matéria seca ingerida. As análises sanguíneas demonstraram que o EEF não prejudicou a saúde dos animais. Conclui-se que o EEF pode ser utilizado na dieta animal sem trazer riscos à saúde, além de ser uma estratégia para aumento na produtividade animal e contribuir com a mitigação de CH4 entérico de ovinos em crescimento Concern about food security and global warming is pressing the ruminant production chain to seek alternatives to increase productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as this activity accounts for most of the enteric methane (CH4) emissions. The development of enzyme products for use in ruminant nutrition is of great value in order to contribute to food demand and reduce environmental impacts. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of a fibrolytic enzyme extract (FEE), produced by the fungus Trichoderma reesei using as substrate residues from the sugar cane industry, on the digestibility, ruminal fermentation and performance of growing sheep, conducted through two experiments. In the experiment 1, the addition of increasing doses (0, 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 ?L g-1) of the FEE on the total gas and CH4 production, degradability and ruminal fermentation of three tropical forages (Cynodon spp., Panicum maximum and Cenchrus ciliares L.) in an in vitro assay, with the objective of verifying the possibility of use of the FEE in the diet of ruminants without harming the fermentative parameters and, consequently, animal health. The results were found to be dose and substrate dependent. However, there was an increase in total gas and CH4 production and in the degradability of all forages used with the highest dose of FEE. It is concluded that the EPS can be used in the diet of ruminants as an alternative to increase the degradability of tropical forages. The experiment 2 was divided in two phases, with the objective of evaluating the effect of the FEE on the apparent digestibility of nutrients, ruminal fermentation, animal performance and enteric CH4 production of 19 growing sheep divided in two experimental groups, control (CTL) and enzyme (ENZ), receiving a diet composed of 70% of Tifton-85 hay and 30% of concentrated mixture. The FEE was applied directly to the hay 24 hours before the meal. In Phase I, the effect of increasing doses (0, 20, 40 and 80 ?L) of the FEE on fiber hydrolysis was evaluated and the dose with the best response was then used in the studies of apparent digestibility of nutrients and ruminal fermentation. The 40 ?L dose was selected to be used in the in vivo assay because it presented better responses on the reduction in fibrous fractions. The animals supplemented with FEE showed higher acid digestible fiber digestibility and higher valerate production. The other parameters were not influenced by the addition of FEE. In Phase II, the effect of FEE was evaluated on the performance, health and production of Enteric CH4 of growing sheep. The procedures used were the same as described in Phase I. The supplementation of the FEE provided a higher percentage of weight gain and lower enteric CH4 production per kg of ingested dry matter. Blood tests showed that FEE did not affect animal health. It is concluded that FEE can be used in the animal diet without presenting health risks, besides being a strategy to increase animal productivity and contribute to the mitigation of enteric CH4 of growing sheep
