Well-defined metallacycloprop-1-ene complexes have only previously been isolated with a metal center bearing one vinyl moiety. We have successfully obtained the first examples of structurally characterized spiro bi(metallacycloprop-1-ene) complexes.

Fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) using small-molecule dyes is highly potential for clinical use. However, many NIR-II dyes suffer from the emission quenching effect and extremely low quantum yields (QYs) in the practical usage forms. The AIE strategy has been successfully utilized to develop NIR-II dyes with donor-acceptor (D-A) structures with acceptable QYs in the aggregate state, but there is still a large room for QY improvement. Here, we rationally designed NIR-II emissive dye named TPE-BBT and its derivative (TPEO-BBT) by changing the electron-donating triphenylamine unit to tetraphenylethlene (TPE). Their nanoparticles exhibited ultrahigh relative QYs of 31.5% and 23.9% in water, respectively. By using an integrating sphere, the absolute QY of TPE-BBT nanoparticles was measured to be 1.8% in water. Its crystals showed an absolute QY of 10.4%, which is the highest value among organ-ic small molecules reported so far. The optimized D-A interaction and the higher rigidity of TPE-BBT in the aggregate state are believed to be the two key factors for its ultrahigh QY. Finally, we utilized TPE-BBT for NIR-II photoluminescence (PL) and chemiluminescence (CL) bioimaging through successive CL resonance energy transfer and Förster resonance energy transfer processes. The ultrahigh QY of TPE-BBT realized an excellent PL imaging quality in mouse blood vessels, and an excellent CL imaging quality in the local arthrosis inflammation in mice with a high signal-to-background ratio of 130. Thus, the design strategy presented here brings new possibilities for the development of bright NIR-II dyes and NIR-II bioimaging technologies.

Long-persistent luminescence (LPL), also known as afterglow, is a phenomenon in which the material shows long-lasting luminescence after the cessation of the excitation source. The research of LPL continues to attract much interest due to its fundamental nature and its potential in the development of the next generation of functional materials. However, most of the current LPL materials are multicomponent inorganic systems obtained after harsh synthetic procedures and often use rare-earth metals. Recently, metal free organic long-persistent luminescence (OLPL) has gained much interest because it can bypass many of the disadvantages of inorganic systems. To date, the most successful method to generate OLPL systems is to access charge-separated states through binary donor-acceptor exciplex systems. However, it has been reported that the ratios of the binary systems affect OLPL properties, complicating the reproducibility and large-scale production of OLPL materials. Simpler OLPL systems can overcome these issues for the benefit of the development and adoption of OLPL systems. Here, we report on the rational design and synthesis of a single-component OLPL system with detectable afterglow for at least 12 min under ambient conditions. This work exemplifies an easy design principle for new OLPL materials. The investigation of the material provides valuable insights toward the generation of OLPL from a single-component system.

Molecular interactions are crucial in diverse fields of protein folding, material science, nanotechnology, and life origins. Although mounting experimental research controls luminescent behavior by adjusting molecular interactions in light-emitting materials, it remains elusive to correlate microscopic molecular interactions with macroscopic luminescent behavior directly. Here, we synthesized three red luminogens with subtle structural variation and investigated the influence of molecular interactions on their luminescent behavior in solution and aggregate states. Our results indicate that strong π-π and D-A interactions in both dilute solution (between luminogen and solvent molecules) and aggregate (between luminogens) states cause the redshift in emission, while weak interactions ({tie.g.}, Van der Waals, C-H⋯π, and C-H⋯F interactions) enhance the quantum yield. This work provides a thoughtful investigation into the complicated influence of various molecular interactions on luminescent behavior.

The combination of chirality and semiconducting properties has enabled chiral metal-halide semiconductors (MHS) to be promising candidates for spin- and polarization-resolved optoelectronic devices. Although several chiral MHS with rich chemical and structural diversity have been reported lately, the macroscopic origin of chiroptical activity remains elusive. Here, combining spectroscopic measurements and Mueller matrix analysis, we discover that the previously reported "apparent" anisotropy factor measured from circular dichroism (CD) in chiral MHS thin films is not an intrinsic chiroptical property, but rather, arising from an interference between the film's linear birefringence (LB) and linear dichroism (LD). We verify the presence of LB and LD effects in both one-dimensional and zero-dimensional chiral MHS thin films. We establish spectroscopic methods to decouple the genuine CD from other spurious contributions, which allows a quantitative comparison of the intrinsic chiroptical activity across different chiral MHS. The relationship between the structure and the genuine chiroptical activity is then uncovered, which is well described by the chirality-induced spin-orbit coupling in the chiral structures. Our study unveils the macroscopic origin of chiroptical activity of chiral MHS and provides design principles for obtaining high anisotropic factors for future chiral optoelectronic applications.

Due to the fast dynamics and re-equilibration of supramolecular self-assembly, bottom-up molecular strategies to fabricate well-defined and controllable multiblock structures are rare. Herein, we propose a new concept for fabrication of fluorescent multiblock microcolumns containing 1 to 7 blocks via hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly based on cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), NaBr and an AIEgen guest. Through the complexation between CB[8] and different numbers of AIEgen guests (2, 1, 0), the competitive displacement caused by the binding of the sodium cation to the CB[8] portal, and the reversible assembly of positively charged guests in salt solutions, one-pot hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly is realized. The molecular structure of each block is analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The AIEgen enables the self-assembly of multiblocks to be visualized, understood, and regulated.

Solid-state molecular motions (SSMM) play a critical role in adjusting behaviors and properties of materials. However, research on SSMM, especially for multicomponent systems, suffers from various problems and is rarely explored. Herein, through collaboration with cocrystal engineering, visualization and manipulation of SSMM in two-component systems, namely, FSBO ((E)-2-(4-fluorostyryl)benzo[d]oxazole)/TCB (1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene) and PVBO ((E)-2-(2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)benzo[d]oxazole)/TCB, were realized. The obtained yellow-emissive F/T (FSBO/TCB) cocrystal displayed turn-on fluorescence, and the green-emissive P/T (PVBO/TCB) cocrystal presented redder emission, both of which exhibited an aggregation-induced emission property. At varied pressure and temperature, the grinding mixtures of FSBO/TCB and PVBO/TCB displayed different molecular motions that were readily observed through the fluorescence signal. Notably, even without grinding, FSBO and TCB molecules could move over for 4 mm in a 1D tube. The unique emission changes induced by SSMM were applied in information storage and dynamic anticounterfeiting. This work not only visualized and manipulated SSMM but offered more insights for multicomponent study in aggregate science.

The potent antibiotics albofungin [systematic name: (1S,4R,8aR)-13-amino-1,15,16-trihydroxy-4-methoxy-12-methyl-3,4,8a,13-tetrahydro-1H-xantheno[4′,3′,2′:4,5][1,3]benzodioxino[7,6-g]isoquinoline-14,17(2H,9H)-dione, C27H24N2O9, 1] and its chlorinated analogue chloroalbofungin (the 11-chloro analogue, C27H23ClN2O9, 2) have been crystallized following their isolation from the bacterial strain Streptomyces chrestomyceticus and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The novel N-aminoquinolone molecular arrangement shows N—N bond lengths of 1.4202 (16) and 1.424 (2) Å in 1 and 2, respectively. The regiochemistry of chloro substitution in the A-ring is para to the quinolone O atom, with a C—Cl bond length of 1.741 (2) Å. The absolute stereochemistry at three chiral centres of the xanthone rings (i.e. 10S, 13R and 19R) is confirmed. Both compounds crystallize in chiral Sohncke space groups consistent with enantiopurity, but are not fully isostructural. A preserved supramolecular construct (SC) confers two-dimensional (2D) isostructurality, but the SC self-associates via either a twofold screw operation in 1, giving a monoclinic P21 structure, or a twofold rotation in 2, affording a monoclinic C2 structure with a doubled unit-cell axis.

Life process is amazing, and it proceeds against the eternal law of entropy increase through molecular motion and takes energy from the environment to build high-order complexity from chaos to achieve evolution with more sophisticated architectures. Inspired from the elegance of life process and also to effectively exploit the undeveloped solid-state molecular motion, two unique chiral Au(I) complexes were elaborately developed in this study, in which their powders could realize a dramatic transformation from nonemissive isolated crystallites to emissive well-defined microcrystals under the stimulation of mechanical force. Such an unusual crystallization was presumed to be caused by molecular motions driven by the formation of strong aurophilic interactions as well as multiple C-H···F and π-π interactions. Such a prominent macroscopic off/on luminescent switching could also be achieved through extremely subtle molecular motions in the crystal state and presented a filament sliding that occurred in a layer-by-layer molecular stacking fashion with no involvement of any crystal phase transition. Additionally, it had been demonstrated that the manipulation of the solid-state molecular motions could result in the generation of circularly polarized luminescence.

We report in this communication the first example of catalytic alkyne metathesis reactions mediated by well-defined non-d0 alkylidyne complexes. The air-stable d2 Re(V) alkylidyne complex Re4, bearing two PO-chelating ligands and a labile pyridine ligand, could catalyze homometathesis of internal alkynes with a broad substrate scope, including alcohols, amines, and even carboxylic acids. The catalyst can tolerate heating, air, and moisture in both solid and solution states, and the catalytic metathesis reactions could proceed normally in wet solvents.

The spiroborate anion, namely, 2,3,7,8-tetracarboxamido-1,4,6,9-tetraoxa-5λ4-boraspiro[4.4]nonane, [B(TarNH2)2]−, derived from the diol L-tartramide TarNH2, [CH(O)(CONH2)]2, shows a novel self-assembly into two-dimensional (2D) layer structures in its salts with alkylammonium cations, [NR 4]+ (R = Et, Pr and Bu), and sparteinium, [HSpa]+, in which the cations and anions are segregated. The structures of four such salts are reported, namely, the tetrapropylazanium salt, C12H28N+·C8H12BN4O8 −, the tetraethylazanium salt hydrate, C8H20N+·C8H12BN4O8 −·6.375H2O, the tetrabutylazanium salt as the ethanol monosolvate hemihydrate, C16H36N+·C8H12BN4O8 −·C2H5OH·0.5H2O, and the sparteinium (7-aza-15-azoniatetracyclo[7.7.1.02,7.010,15]heptadecane) salt as the ethanol monosolvate, C15H27N2 +·C8H12BN4O8 −·C2H5OH. The 2D anion layers have preserved intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the amide groups and a typical metric repeat of around 10 × 15 Å. The constraint of matching the interfacial area organizes the cations into quite different solvated arrangements, i.e. the [NEt4] salt is highly hydrated with around 6.5H2O per cation, the [NPr4] salt apparently has a good metric match to the anion layer and is unsolvated, whilst the [NBu4] salt is intermediate and has EtOH and H2O in its cation layer, which is similar to the arrangement for the chiral [HSpa]+ cation. This family of salts shows highly organized chiral space and offers potential for the resolution of both chiral cations and neutral chiral solvent molecules.

The flavonoid Oroxylin A (6-methoxychrysin or 5,7-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-2-phenyl-4H-chromen-4-one, C16H12O5) and its regioisomers are of increasing interest for a variety of bioactive functions and their pharmaceutical formulation is of importance. Previous difficulties in the separation and misidentification of Oroxylin A from its regioisomers Wogonin (8-methoxychrysin or 5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxy-2-phenyl-4H-chromen-4-one) and Negletein (5,6-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone or 5,6-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2-phenyl-4H-chromen-4-one) render its full structural and powder X-ray characterization highly desirable. The low-temperature (100 K) crystal structures of Oroxylin A, Negletein and Wogonin sesquihydrate are reported for the first time. Wogonin crystallizes in two related but distinct hydrated forms. These have very similar powder diffractograms, indicating that such issues need to be addressed for its pharmaceutical formulation.

Gold(I) N-heterocyclic carbene (AuI -NHC) complexes have emerged as potential anticancer agents owing to their high cytotoxicity and stability. Integration of their above unique functions with customized aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens to achieve specific bioimaging and efficient theranostics to cancer is highly desirable but is rarely studied. Now, a series of novel AuI -NHC compounds were developed with AIE characteristics. A complex with a PPh3 ligand was selected out as it could achieve both prominent specific imaging of various cancer cells and efficient inhibition of their growth with negligible toxic effects on normal cells due to the targeting binding and strong inhibition towards thioredoxin reductase. This complex could also act as a powerful radiosensitizer to boost the anticancer efficacy with performance superior to that of popularly used auranofin. It holds great potential as a specific and effective theranostic drug in cancer diagnosis and precise therapy.

Molecular motion is related to the structures and properties of the molecules and their aggregates. Owing to both weak intermolecular interactions and complicated interplay between molecules, the manipulation of inter-molecular motion to realize specific structures and properties as well as applications, is challenging but attractive. Here, we reported that the photoluminescence property of luminogens could be tuned by the manipulation of the inter-molecular motion based on the dynamic ionic bond between the cation of acridinium and the anion of tetraphenyl boron. The free inter-molecular motion and the strong attraction of the ionic bond in the non/less polar solvents enabled the formation of a dark state in the excited state with faint emission. In contrast, multiple ionic bonds between cation and anion together with non-covalent interactions were observed in the crystalline state. This directly contributed to the restriction of the inter-molecular motion (RIMM), and eventually gave rise to bright aggregation-induced emission. Such a RIMM model for efficient solid-state emission can be validated by several organic ionic species. More importantly, this type of “multicomponent luminogens” showed remarkable reactive oxygen species generation, which enabled them to kill bacteria even superbugs upon white-light irradiation. This study not only provided fundamental insights into the molecular motion-structure-property relationship, but also opened up the possibility of constructing highly efficient luminogens in aggregates via RIMM for advanced applications.

Organic near-infrared (NIR) luminogens have attracted intensive attention considering their vast potential applications in areas like bioimaging, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and night-vision telecommunication. However, organic NIR luminogens with high solid quantum efficiencies are scarce, limiting their applications. Here, we reported an electron-deficient acceptor, BSM, based on dithiafulvalene and benzothiadiazole, which could work as a strong acceptor to produce highly efficient NIR emitters with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. One of the AIEgens, TBSMCN emitted at 820 nm with a solid quantum yield of 10.7 %. When applied to solution-processed OLEDs, an outstanding external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9.4 % was achieved with a peak wavelength at 728 nm. Moreover, its non-doped device could achieve an extraordinary EQE of 2.2 % peaking at 804 nm. In the further optimized configuration, when an extra sensitizer was added to harvest triplet excitons, the EQE unprecedentedly soared up to 14.3 % with a peak wavelength of 750 nm.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease characterized by tau aggregating into neurofibrillary tangles. Targeting tau aggregation is one of the most critical strategies for AD treatment and prevention. Herein, a high-throughput screening of tau-aggregation inhibitors was performed by thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence assay and tauR3 peptides. According to bioactivity-guided isolation, homoprejadomycin (1) was obtained from the marine bacterium Streptomyces tendae MCCC 1A01534. Two new stable derivatives, 2 and 3, were yielded in a one-step reaction. By ThT assay, transmission electron microscopy, and circular dichroism, we demonstrated that the angucyclinones 2 and 3 inhibited tau aggregation and disaggregated tau fibrils. In the presence of 2, native tauR3 peptides maintained the disorder conformation, whereas the tauR3 aggregates reduced β-sheet structures. And compound 2 was confirmed to inhibit the aggregation of full-length 2N4R tau protein. Furthermore, 2 with low cytotoxicity protected HT22 cells from okadaic acid-induced damage by suppressing tau aggregates. These results indicated that 2 was a promising lead structure with tau therapeutic potency for AD treatment.

Dewar benzenes, the metastable valence isomers of benzenes, have been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically. In contrast, little is known about Dewar metallabenzenes having a transition metal in the skeletal framework, despite the recent intensive interest in the development of chemistry of metallabenzenes. Herein, we report the isolation and characterization of the first examples of structurally characterized Dewar metallabenzenes. These compounds were generated via unprecedented reactions of metallacyclobutadienes with aminoalkynes.

Nature possesses a powerful ability to assemble multiple complex structures to fabricate hierarchical biological structures in a living-assembled way. However, it is still a huge challenge for artificial systems to fabricate and characterize hierarchical living assemblies with well-defined and controllable but complex structures. In this work, we proposed a new concept for the fabrication of multiblock fluorescent microcolumns, which relies on the cooperation between the controllable host–guest complexation based on cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and the living assembly of nanotubular supramolecular polymers composed of CB[8] and NaBr in aqueous solution. By using the complexation of CB[8] with different guest numbers of luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) characteristics, and the difference in affinity between CB[8] and different types of AIEgens, the concentration-controlled and self-sorting-controlled sequential living assembly are realized, respectively. Correspondingly, multiblock fluorescent microcolumns with different fluorescence emission are fabricated, and the molecular structure of each fluorescent block is analyzed by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement. In addition, the living assembly of multiblock fluorescent microcolumns is visualized, understood, and regulated with the aid of AIEgens. The method developed here is expected to be extended to more guest molecules of CB[8] and also provides a referential crystallization method for CB[8]-based complexes.

Despite the huge progress of luminescent molecular assemblies over the past decade, it is still challenging to understand their confined behavior in semi-crystalline polymers for constrained space recognition. Here, we report a polymorphic luminogen with aggregation-induced emission (AIE), capable of selective growth in polymer amorphous and crystalline phases with distinct color. The polymorphic behaviors of the AIE luminogen embedded within the polymer network are dependent on the size of nano-confinement: a thermodynamically stable polymorph of the AIE luminogen with green emission is stabilized in the amorphous phase, while a metastable polymorph with yellow emission is confined in the crystalline phase. The information on polymer crystalline and amorphous phases is transformed into distinct fluorescence colors, allowing a single AIE luminogen as a fluorescent marker for visualization of polymer microstructures in terms of amorphous and crystalline phase distribution, quantitative polymer crystallinity measurement, and spatial morphological arrangement. Our findings demonstrate that confinement of the AIE luminogen in the polymer network can achieve free space recognition and also provide a correlation between microscopic morphologies and macroscopic optical signals. We envision that our strategy will inspire the development of other materials with spatial confinement to incorporate AIE luminogens for various applications., A polymorphic AIEgen is capable of selective growth in amorphous and crystalline polymer phases with distinct color for microstructure visualization.
