To build educational capacity for the rapidly evolving science and profession of geocomputation, the American Association of Geographers piloted an Encoding Geography research-practice partnership (RPP) composed of geography and computer science educators and researchers. This commentary describes the process, known as Collective Impact, that was implemented to investigate the persistent problems of practice that have limited the participation of women and minorities in geocomputational education and careers. We also discuss the RPP's data-driven approach for developing an inclusive curriculum pathway aligned with student aspirations.

This article reports on professional development in which twenty-four middle- or high-school teachers learned about integration of the Geographic Information System (GIS) in science or social science classes. We analyzed qualitative data obtained from the participants to examine two research questions. 1) What were the most relevant and useful skills and knowledge the teachers acquired from this professional development? And, 2) what were the approaches they intended to use in integrating GIS with instruction. We sought to understand the properties and impacts of our professional development designed through Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). The article concludes with implications for further research on geospatial training in the TPACK theoretical framework.

Families who find themselves in the middle of child protective proceedings have three possible outcomes: (1) the family can reunify; (2) parents voluntarily surrender their parental rights; or (3) the parents have their rights terminated. While it seems we should support children in the second and third scenarios equally, having funding sources such as the Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program (KinGAP) only available to children of parents whose rights are terminated, does the opposite. This Note proposes amending the eligibility requirements of KinGAP to include children of parents who surrender their parental rights which would encourage positive safe placements for children. Key Points for the Family Court Community: KinGAP provides financial assistance to kinship caregivers who take on the legal responsibility of guardianship.The purpose of KinGAP is to create more guardians for the permanent placement of foster children who would otherwise be unable to afford the additional expense of caring for a child.Due to the current eligibility requirements of KinGAP, children of parents who voluntarily surrendered their rights are often ineligible while children of parents who had their rights terminated are.As of 2021, 14,749 children in New York remain in foster care in search of a permanent placement.Children in kinship care are shown to have better behavior and mental health outcomes compared to children in traditional foster care. The overwintering ecology of a disjunct population complex of Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii (Holbrook, 1838)) in southwestern Nova Scotia was studied from January 2005 to April 2006. Sites were visited biweekly. We recorded structural characteristics and dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and water and substrate temperatures in 7 overwintering sites containing at least 46 turtles and 7 paired 'control sites'. Twenty-five adult turtles were radio-tracked to record locations and movements. Median winter temperature ranged from 0.8 to 8.6°C in the organic substrate and from 0.3 to 7.6°C in the water column. In overwintering sites, median DO ranged from 2.8 to 11.3 mg/L and median pH ranged from 4.6 to 5.5. Blanding's turtles can tolerate submergence under ice for at least 3 months in severely hypoxic conditions. Movement was positively correlated with water temperature. Although some moderate movements were made during winter, 90% were less than 5 m. Movement to overwintering sites (September to mid-November) was gradual, but departure (late March to April) was rapid. Physical characteristics and environmental variables varied dramatically among overwintering sites, and no consistent patterns were observed between overwintering and control sites. We suggest that Blanding's turtles return to communal sites year after year because of site fidelity and mating opportunities. Vingt-cinq tortues adultes ont ete suivies par radio afin de determiner leur position et leurs deplacements. Les temperatures medianes en hiver variaient de 0,8 a 8,6[degre]C dans le substrat organique et de 0,3 a 7,6 dans la colonne d'eau. Dans les sites d'hivernage, le DO median variait de 2,8 a 11,3 mg/L et le pH median variait de 4,6 a 5,5. Les tortues mouchetees peuvent endurer d'etre submergees sous la glace pour au moins 3 mois dans des conditions de forte hypoxie. Il y a une correlation positive entre les deplacements et la temperature de l'eau. Bien qu'il y ait des deplacements limites pendant l'hiver, 90 % de ceux-ci sont sur une distance de moins de 5 m. Les deplacements vers les sites d'hivernage (septembre a mi-novembre) sont graduels, mais l'abandon des sites (fin de mars a avril) se fait rapidement. With this paper, we document aspects of a year‐long project with 11th‐grade students from a high school in City Heights, San Diego. The students chose to become present, to share their experiences, explore others' understandings of their neighborhood, and collaborate to create an online multi‐media narrative that reflected them and their relations to the neighborhood. Theoretically, we involve a transversal politics that embrace young people's multiplicities of relations. We assume multiculturalism as a foil to engage young people's community presence. We show how the project moved toward a vibrant, layered, networked, and lyrical presence for young people in City Heights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
