Abstract

Code-switching (CS) is a common linguistic phenomenon exhibited by multilingual individuals, where they tend to alternate between languages within one single conversation. CS is a complex phenomenon that not only encompasses linguistic challenges, but also contains a great deal of complexity in terms of its dynamic behaviour across speakers. Given that the factors giving rise to CS vary from one country to the other, as well as from one person to the other, CS is found to be a speaker-dependant behaviour, where the frequency by which the foreign language is embedded differs across speakers. While several researchers have looked into predicting CS behaviour from a linguistic point of view, research is still lacking in the task of predicting user CS behaviour from sociological and psychological perspectives. We provide an empirical user study, where we investigate the correlations between users' CS levels and character traits. We conduct interviews with bilinguals and gather information on their profiles, including their demographics, personality traits, and traveling experiences. We then use machine learning (ML) to predict users' CS levels based on their profiles, where we identify the main influential factors in the modeling process. We experiment with both classification as well as regression tasks. 4. Oral health and mental health in healthy adults, a topic of primary prevention and health care, empirical results from two online studies

Abstract

Oral health is an important, yet often neglected aspect of health and well-being. Among geriatric populations, oral diseases, poor oral health, and reduced oral hygiene behavior are major comorbid factors of geriatric diseases such as dementia, cardiovascular diseases, or mental health conditions. However, little is known so far about the relationships between oral health and mental health in the younger adult population, who is yet not suffering from any disorder. In the present manuscript the results of two online studies, online study 1, n = 133, all-female sample and online study 2: n = 29, mixed gender sample, are reported that investigate the relationship between self-reported oral health impairments and preclinical symptoms of mental disorders including self-reported symptoms associated with depression or eating disorders as well as self-reported perceived stress and behavior change related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract

Multilingual speakers tend to alternate between languages within a conversation, a phenomenon referred to as "code-switching" (CS). CS is a complex phenomenon that not only encompasses linguistic challenges, but also contains a great deal of complexity in terms of its dynamic behaviour across speakers. This dynamic behaviour has been studied by sociologists and psychologists, identifying factors affecting CS. In this paper, we provide an empirical user study on Arabic-English CS, where we show the correlation between users' CS frequency and character traits. We use machine learning (ML) to validate the findings, informing and confirming existing theories. Abstract

To improve the understanding of human gait and to facilitate novel developments in gait rehabilitation, the neural correlates of human gait as measured by means of non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) have been investigated recently. Particularly, gait-related event-related brain potentials (gERPs) may provide information about the functional role of cortical brain regions in human gait control. The purpose of this paper is to explore possible experimental and technical solutions for time-sensitive analysis of human gait-related ERPs during spontaneous and instructed treadmill walking. A solution (HW/SW) for synchronous recording of gait- and EEG data was developed, tested and piloted. The solution consists of a custom-made USB synchronization interface, a time-synchronization module and a data merging module, allowing temporal synchronization of recording devices for time-sensitive extraction of gait markers for analysis of gait-related ERPs and for the training of artificial neural networks. In the present manuscript, the hardware and software components were tested with the following devices: A treadmill with an integrated pressure plate for gait analysis (zebris FDM-T) and an Acticap non-wireless 32-channel EEG-system (Brain Products GmbH). The usability and validity of the developed solution was tested in a pilot study (n = 3 healthy participants, n=3 females, mean age = 22.75 years). Recorded EEG data was segmented and analyzed according to the detected gait markers for the analysis of gait-related ERPs. Finally, EEG periods were used to train a deep learning artificial neural network as classifier of gait phases. The results obtained in this pilot study, although preliminary, support the feasibility of the solution for the application of gait-related EEG analysis..

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting human behavior, increasing the demand for the cooperation between psychologists and computer scientists to develop technology solutions that can help people in order to promote well-being and behavior change. According to the conceptual Character-Behavior-Situation (CBS) triad of Character Computing, behavior is driven by an individual’s character (trait and state markers) and the situation. In previous work, a computational ontology for Character Computing (CCOnto) has been introduced. The ontology can be extended with domain-specific knowledge for developing applications for inferring certain human behaviors to be leveraged for different purposes. In this paper, we present a framework for developing applications for dealing with changes in well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. The framework can be used by psychology domain experts and application developers. The proposed model allows the input of heuristic rules as well as data-based rule extraction for inferring behavior. In this paper, we present how CCOnto is extended with components of physical and mental well-being and how the framework uses the extended domain ontologies in applications for evaluating sleep habits, anxiety, and depression predisposition during the COVID-19 pandemic based on user-input data.

Abstract

The influence of aerobic exercise, as a possibly mood-enhancing experience, was investigated for its effect on emotional evaluation of self- vs. other-related emotional (e.g., my/his joy) or neutral (e.g., my/his notes) stimuli. N=30 participants (healthy, female novices, i.e., with no regular, dedicated training schedule) performed four separate sessions of moderate aerobic exercise (22 min of cycling at 60-70% HRmax). Attentional focus was manipulated across exercise bouts (internal focus vs. external focus vs. no instructed attention focus vs. control condition consisting of no exercise and no instructed attention focus). Emotional evaluation of verbal stimuli was assessed 10 minutes after each exercise bout. Exercise increased self-reported positive affect compared to the inactive control condition regardless of attentional focus. Exercising without instructed attentional focus led to faster reaction times in the emotional evaluation task compared to the inactive control condition. Instructed internal or external attentional focus did not affect evaluations (number of valence-congruent responses) or reaction times compared to the no-exercise control condition. Self-reported internal attentional focus during cycling was associated with a subsequently stronger, and in the case of an external focus with a subsequently rather reduced self-positivity bias in the evaluation of self-related, positive vs. other-related positive words.

Abstract

Introduction: Building upon previous research, this study aims to provide answers to the questions of how the presence of a humanoid artificial pedagogical agent as teacher and instructor and visual self-other representation of the learners through avatars influence the immediate cognitive performance and learning experience in online learning among adult learners. Methods: Several outcome measures were investigated to evaluate if effects are the same or different for the different experimental conditions and if learning with the pedagogical agent and visual self-other representation is modulated by the learner's previous experiences with and preferences for online learning. Teacher presence and self-other presence of the learners were experimentally manipulated. A humanoid artificial agent, visible on all of the slides of the online course material and instructing the material represented the teacher. The avatars of the learners (self-avatar and peer avatars) were kept of minimal functionality but self-avatars were preselected or could be self-selected by the learners. The learner's cognitive learning performance, the learner's attention to the pedagogical agent, their sense of teacher presence and of self- and other-presence, their satisfaction with the course as well as the learner's previous learning experiences were measured by cognitive testing, self-report, and linguistic analysis as major performance indicators and a positive learning experience. The analysis comprised 133 university students and results were additionally compared for two subsamples. Results: Learning performance, learning satisfaction, and the attention paid to the teacher were positively related. In addition, positive evaluations of the cognitive presence elicited by the teacher were found. Self- or other-presence of avatars did not significantly influence the learner's performance beyond teacher presence but the learner's perception of it and their motivation to study online. Discussion: The study and its results extend the previous literature that focused on the effects of pedagogical agents in online teaching or on virtual representations of the learner's self and classmates in online learning. Despite limitations, the results of this study provide insights into combining teaching with artificial pedagogical agents and visual avatars for self-other representation during online teaching and the observations can serve as catalyst for future research.
