The reaction of the bicyclic silicon(I) ring compound Si4{N(SiMe3)Mes}4 1 with strong zwitterionic character and moderate sterical demand of the amido substituents with two equivalents of KC8 was investigated. This resulted in the unexpected abstraction of two amido substituents from 1 and additionally in dimerization to a dianionic Si8 cluster compound 2 with four unsubstituted silicon atoms and two [K([18]crown‐6)]+ counter cations. Performing this reaction in the absence of [18]crown‐6 results in release of only one amido substituent from 1 and dimerization to a dianionic Si8 cluster 3 with only two unsubstituted silicon atoms. This reaction with KC8 was repeated and trapping agents such as SiMe3Cl and tBuCl were added in‐situ whereupon the second isolated homocyclic silylene 4 and a monoanionic hydride and tBu substituted Si8 cluster 5 with one unsubstituted silicon atom were isolated. Furthermore, 1 was reacted with KOtBu which resulted in the selective abstraction of one SiMe3 group and formation of the tetrahedral silanide 6 with one imido substituent bridging an edge of the tetrahedron. Two series with three Pt(II) complexes each (PtLPh‐n, PtLFpy‐n) bearing asymmetric tetradentate ligands as dianionic luminophores with variable alkyl chain lengths were synthesized. Hence, each ligand series is distinguished by one of its cyclometallating rings (phenyl vs. 2,6‐difluoropyrid‐3‐yl). Steady‐state and time‐resolved photoluminescence spectroscopic studies in diluted solutions at room temperature and in glassy matrices at 77 K show that the emissive state is mainly centered on the invariantly electron‐rich cyclometalated side while the second ring regulates the admixture of ligand‐centered and metal‐to‐ligand charge‐transfer character. Hence, the radiative rates can be controlled, as indicated by quantum‐mechanical calculations, which also explain the temperature‐dependent trend in the phosphorescence rate constants. Studies in condensed phases (single‐crystal X‐ray diffractometry, polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, steady‐state and time‐resolved photoluminescence micro(spectro)scopy) showed the development of a smectic A mesophase for the fluorinated species bearing the two longest alkyl chains. Nuclear magnetic resonance‐based studies on the thermodynamics of aggregation in solution confirm the marked enthalpic stabilization of aggregates mediated by the polar 2,6‐difluoropyrid‐3‐yl moiety (and to a lesser extent by dispersive forces between the alkyl chains). On the other hand, the negative entropy of aggregation is dominated by the restriction of degrees of freedom involving the peripheral alkyl moieties upon stacking, which becomes increasingly relevant for longer chains. All these factors control Pt···Pt coupling, a crucial interaction for the design of photofunctional mesogens based on Pt(II) complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work reports on a battery of coordination compounds featuring a versatile dianionic luminophore adopting three different coordination modes (mono, bi, and tridentate) while chelating Pd(II), Pt(II), Au(III), and Hg(II) centers. An in‐depth structural characterization of the ligand precursor (H2L) and six transition metal complexes ([HLPdCNtBu], [LPtCl], [LPtCNtBu], [LPtCNPhen], [HLHgCl], and [LAuCl]) is presented. The influence of the cations and coordination modes of the luminophore and co‐ligands on the photophysical properties (including photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦL), excited state lifetimes (τ), and average (non‐)radiative rate constants) are evaluated at various temperatures in different phases. Five complexes show interesting photophysical properties at room temperature (RT) in solution. Embedment in frozen glassy matrices at 77 K significantly boosts their luminescence by suppressing radiationless deactivation paths. Thus, the Pt(II)‐based compounds provide the highest efficiencies, with slight variations upon exchange of the ancillary ligand. In the case of [HLPdCNtBu], both ΦL and τ increase over 30‐fold as compared to RT. Furthermore, the Hg(II) complex achieves, for the first time in its class, a ΦL exceeding 60% and millisecond‐range lifetimes. Two different hybrid nanosystems are prepared by loading highly crystalline, monodisperse magnetite nanocubes (MNCs) with phosphorescent Pt(II) complexes (PtCxs). One involves the encapsulation of the hydrophobic PtCx1 within an amphiphilic comb polymer (MNC@poly(maleic anhydride‐alt‐1‐octadecene) [PMAO]–PtCx1), whereas the other involves the direct binding of the hydrophilic PtCx2 to the surface of the MNC mediated by a ligand‐exchange procedure (MNC@OH–PtCx2). Both systems are evaluated as potential candidates for multimodal imaging in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and photoluminescence lifetime imaging micro(spectro)scopy (PLIM). PLIM measurements on agarose phantoms demonstrate significantly longer excited‐state lifetimes compared to the short‐lived autofluorescence of biological background. Additionally, both nanosystems perform as effective MRI contrast agents (CAs): the r2* values are 3–4 times higher than for the commercial CA ferucarbotran. MNC@PMAO–PtCx1 particles also cause significant increases in r2. While the ligand exchange procedure efficiently anchors PtCxs to the MNC surface, the polymeric encapsulation ensures higher colloidal stability, contributing to differences in PLIM and MRI outcomes. In these results, the successful integration of two complementary noninvasive imaging modalities within a single nanosystem is confirmed, serving as the impetus for further investigation of such systems as advanced multimodal–multiscale imaging agents with dual orthogonal readouts. We herein report on the synthesis and structural characterization, as well as on the photophysical properties, of a series of isoleptic Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes featuring tridentate N^N^N chelators as luminophores while bearing diverse ancillary co-ligands. Six new palladium complexes were synthesized using 2,6-bis(3-(tert-butyl/trifluoromethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)pyridine (tbu or CF3, respectively) in combination with four distinct ancillary ligands, namely: 4-amylpyridine (AmPy), 2,6-dimethylphenyl isonitrile (CNR), triphenylphosphane (PPh3), and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA). Thus, two novel Pt(II) complexes incorporating the co-ligands CNR and PTA were explored. The remaining platinum-based complexes, namely CF3-Pt-AmPy, tbu-Pt-AmPy, CF3-Pt-PPh3, and tbu-Pt-PPh3, were re-synthesized according to our previous work for a systematic comparison with their Pd(II) homologues. Thus, photophysical studies were performed in different solvents and conditions. The Pt(II) complexes demonstrated comparable or superior photophysical characteristics in toluene when compared with their solutions in liquid dichloromethane at room temperature. In contrast, the Pd(II) complexes exhibited no significant photoluminescence in dichloromethane, but a surprisingly clear emission was observed for tbu-Pd-AmPy, tbu-Pd-CNR, and tbu-Pd-PPh3 in liquid toluene at room temperature. The significant differences regarding excited state lifetimes and photoluminescence quantum yields underscore the impact of solvent selection on photophysical characteristics, emphasizing the need to consider metal-ligand interactions, as well as the surrounding microenvironment, for a comprehensive interpretation of their photophysical properties. A series of [2]catenanes has been prepared from di‐NHC building blocks by utilizing solvophobic effects and/or π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The dinickel naphthobiscarbene complex syn‐[1] and the kinked biphenyl‐bridged bipyridyl ligand L2 yield the [2]catenane [2‐IL](OTf)4 by self‐assembly. Solvophobic effects are pivotal for the formation of the interlocked species. Substitution of the biphenyl‐linker in L2 for a pyromellitic diimide group gave ligand L3, which yielded in combination with syn‐[1] the [2]catenane [3‐IL](OTf)4. This assembly exhibits enhanced stability in diluted solution, aided by additional π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The π⋅⋅⋅π stacking was augmented by the introduction of a pyrene bridge between two NHC donors in ligand L4. Di‐NHC precursor H2‐L4(PF6)2 reacts with Ag2O to give the [Ag2L42]2 [2]catenane [4‐IL](PF6)4, which shows strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions between the pyrene groups. This assembly was readily converted into the [Au2L42]2 gold species [5‐IL](PF6)4, which exhibits exceptional stability based on the strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and the enhanced stability of the Au‐CNHC bonds. In this work, we explored the synthesis and characterization of Pt(II) complexes bearing different tri- and tetradentate luminophores acting as C^N*N- and C^N*N^C-chelators. Thus, we investigated diverse substitution patterns in order to improve their processability and assessed the effects of structural variations on their excited state properties. Hence, a detailed analysis of the different synthetic pathways is presented; the photophysical properties were studied by using steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. We determined the absorption and emission spectra, the photoluminescence efficiencies, and the excited state lifetimes of the complexes in fluid solutions at room temperature and frozen glassy matrices at 77 K. Finally, a structure–property relationship was established, showing that the decoration of the bridging unit on the tridentate luminophores only marginally affects the excited state properties, whereas the double cyclometallation related to the tetradentate chelator prolongs the excited state lifetime and increases the photoluminescence quantum yield. In this work, we explored coordination compounds featuring caffeine‐based carbene co‐ligands and tridentate dianionic pincer luminophores derived from 2,6‐bis(1H‐1,2,4‐triazol‐5‐yl)pyridine (N), as well as from 2‐phenyl‐6‐(1H‐1,2,4‐triazol‐5‐yl)pyridine (C), bearing either Ad (adamantyl) or tBu (tertiary butyl) substituents. The new 2‐phenyl‐6‐(1H‐1,2,4‐triazol‐5‐yl)pyridine‐based ligand precursors along with four Pt(II) complexes, namely Pt(C‐tBu), Pt(C‐Ad), Pt(N‐tBu) and Pt(N‐Ad) were characterized. Further on, the influence of the different substituents at the chelating luminophores and of the caffeine‐based NHC‐co‐ligand on the photophysical properties (including photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦL), excited‐state lifetimes (τ), radiative (kr), and non‐radiative (knr) deactivation rate constants) was assessed in fluid solutions at room temperature (RT) and in frozen glassy matrices at 77 K. All four luminophores perform equivalently well within the experimental uncertainty. In deoxygenated fluid solutions at RT, photoluminescence quantum yields reaching up to 24 ± 2% and excited‐state lifetimes of around 12 μs were found. The generally long excited‐state lifetimes and only minor blue shift upon cooling to 77 K along with mostly well‐resolved vibrational progressions point to metal‐perturbed ligand‐centered excited states. Notably, the yield of the complexation reaction in case of Pt(C‐tBu) and Pt(C‐Ad) was almost two times higher compared to Pt(N‐tBu) and Pt(N‐Ad). Cyclometallation is not an essential feature to achieve high photoluminescence quantum yields, but it can improve the synthetic efficiency.
