The Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) at Gemini South started regular queue operations in early 2024, bringing a long-sought open-access capability to the astronomy community. This research note briefly describes an effort to provide easy-to-access reduced spectra for GHOST programs from all Gemini partner countries and encourage prompt data exploration and analysis. Since March 2024, over 4500 spectra have been reduced and made available to principal investigators (PIs). We report the detection of Raman-scattered C II lines at 7023 and 7054\r{A} in the symbiotic star V366 Carinae using GHOST at Gemini South. These faint features, originating from the C II doublet at ${\lambda}{\lambda}$ 1036 and 1037\r{A}, are rare and have been detected in only two other symbiotic stars: V1016 Cygni and RR Telescopii. Our findings showcase the exceptional sensitivity of GHOST to detect subtle spectral features and open the door to comparative studies of Raman-scattered C II features across these systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in RNAAS

With high equilibrium temperatures and tidally locked rotation, ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) are unique laboratories within which to probe extreme atmospheric physics and chemistry. In this paper, we present high-resolution dayside spectroscopy of the UHJ WASP-189b obtained with the new Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) at the Gemini South Observatory. The observations, which cover three hours of post-eclipse orbital phases, were obtained during the instrument's System Verification run. We detect the planet's atmosphere via the Doppler cross-correlation technique, and recover a detection of neutral iron in the planet's dayside atmosphere at a significance of 7.5$\sigma$ in the red-arm of the data, verifying the presence of a thermal inversion. We also investigate the presence of other species in the atmosphere and discuss the implications of model injection/recovery tests. These results represent the first atmospheric characterization of an exoplanet with GHOST's high-resolution mode, and demonstrate the potential of this new instrument in detecting and studying ultra-hot exoplanet atmospheres., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. We present the results from the first two years of the Planet Hunters NGTS citizen science project, which searches for transiting planet candidates in data from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) by enlisting the help of members of the general public. Over 8,000 registered volunteers reviewed 138,198 light curves from the NGTS Public Data Releases 1 and 2. We utilize a user weighting scheme to combine the classifications of multiple users to identify the most promising planet candidates not initially discovered by the NGTS team. We highlight the five most interesting planet candidates detected through this search, which are all candidate short-period giant planets. This includes the TIC-165227846 system that, if confirmed, would be the lowest-mass star to host a close-in giant planet. We assess the detection efficiency of the project by determining the number of confirmed planets from the NASA Exoplanet Archive and TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) successfully recovered by this search and find that 74% of confirmed planets and 63% of TOIs detected by NGTS are recovered by the Planet Hunters NGTS project. The identification of new planet candidates shows that the citizen science approach can provide a complementary method to the detection of exoplanets with ground-based surveys such as NGTS., Comment: 42 pages, 20 figures, 17 tables. We report on the chemo-dynamical analysis of SPLUS J142445.34-254247.1, an extremely metal-poor halo star enhanced in elements formed by the rapid neutron-capture process. This star was first selected as a metal-poor candidate from its narrow-band S-PLUS photometry and followed up spectroscopically in medium-resolution with Gemini South/GMOS, which confirmed its low-metallicity status. High-resolution spectroscopy was gathered with GHOST at Gemini South, allowing for the determination of chemical abundances for 36 elements, from carbon to thorium. At [Fe/H]=-3.39, SPLUS J1424-2542 is one of the lowest metallicity stars with measured Th and has the highest logeps(Th/Eu) observed to date, making it part of the "actinide-boost" category of r-process enhanced stars. The analysis presented here suggests that the gas cloud from which SPLUS J1424-2542 was formed must have been enriched by at least two progenitor populations. The light-element (Z<=30) abundance pattern is consistent with the yields from a supernova explosion of metal-free stars with 11.3-13.4 Msun, and the heavy-element (Z>=38) abundance pattern can be reproduced by the yields from a neutron star merger (1.66Msun and 1.27Msun) event. A kinematical analysis also reveals that SPLUS J1424-2542 is a low-mass, old halo star with a likely in-situ origin, not associated with any known early merger events in the Milky Way., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ

Pristine_183.6849+04.8619 (P1836849) is an extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]$=-3.3\pm0.1$) star on a prograde orbit confined to the Galactic disk. Such stars are rare and may have their origins in protogalactic fragments that formed the early Milky Way, in low mass satellites accreted later, or forming in situ in the Galactic plane. Here we present a chemo-dynamical analysis of the spectral features between $3700-11000$\r{A} from a high-resolution spectrum taken during Science Verification of the new Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST). Spectral features for many chemical elements are analysed (Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni), and valuable upper limits are determined for others (C, Na, Sr, Ba). This main sequence star exhibits several rare chemical signatures, including (i) extremely low metallicity for a star in the Galactic disk, (ii) very low abundances of the light $\alpha$-elements (Na, Mg, Si) compared to other metal-poor stars, and (iii) unusually large abundances of Cr and Mn, where [Cr, Mn/Fe]$_{\rm NLTE}>+0.5$. A comparison to theoretical yields from supernova models suggests that two low mass Population III objects (one 10 M$_\odot$ supernova and one 17 M$_\odot$ hypernova) can reproduce the abundance pattern well (reduced $\chi^2<1$). When this star is compared to other extremely metal-poor stars on quasi-circular, prograde planar orbits, differences in both chemistry and kinematics imply there is little evidence for a common origin. RR Tel is an interacting binary system in which a hot white dwarf (WD) accretes matter from a Mira-type variable star via gravitational capture of its stellar wind. This symbiotic nova shows intense Raman-scattered O VI 1032\r{A} and 1038\r{A} features at 6825\r{A} and 7082\r{A}. We present high-resolution optical spectra of RR Tel taken in 2016 and 2017 with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph at Magellan-Clay telescope, Chile. We aim to study the stellar wind accretion in RR Tel from the profile analysis of Raman O VI features. With an asymmetric O VI disk model, we derive a representative Keplerian speed of $> 35{\rm km~s^{-1}}$, and the corresponding scale < 0.8 au. The best-fit for the Raman profiles is obtained with a mass loss rate of the Mira ${\dot M}\sim2\times10^{-6}~{\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}}$ and a wind terminal velocity $v_{\infty}\sim 20~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. We compare the MIKE data with an archival spectrum taken in 2003 with the Fibre-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS) at the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope. It allows us to highlight the profile variation of the Raman O VI features, indicative of a change in the density distribution of the O VI disk in the last two decades. We also report the detection of O VI recombination lines at 3811\r{A} and 3834\r{A}, which are blended with other emission lines. We present a detailed modeling of the two broad bands observed at 6825 \AA\ and 7082 \AA\ in Sanduleak's star, a controversial object in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These bands are known to originate from Raman-scattering of O VI $\lambda\lambda$ 1032 and 1038 photons with atomic hydrogen and are only observed in bona fide symbiotic stars. Our high-resolution spectrum obtained with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph at the Magellan-Clay Telescope reveals, quite surprisingly, that the profiles of the two bands look very different: while the Raman 6825 \AA\ band shows a single broad profile with a redward extended bump, the Raman 7082 \AA\ band exhibits a distinct triple-peak profile. Our model suggests that the O VI emission nebula can be decomposed into a red, blue and central emission regions from an accretion disk, a bipolar outflow and a further compact, optically thick region. We also perform Monte Carlo simulations with the aim of fitting the observed flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082) \sim 4.5$, which indicate that the neutral region in Sanduleak's star is characterized by the column density $N_{HI} \sim 1 \times 10^{23} {\rm\ cm^{-2}}$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Symbiotic stars are regarded as wide binary systems consisting of a hot white dwarf and a mass losing giant. They exhibit unique spectral features at 6825 \AA\ and 7082 \AA, which are formed via Raman scattering of \ion{O}{6}$\lambda\lambda$ 1032 and 1038 with atomic hydrogen. We adopt a Monte Carlo technique to generate the same number of \ion{O}{6}$\lambda$1032 and $\lambda$1038 line photons and compute the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ of these Raman scattered \ion{O}{6} features formed in neutral regions with a simple geometric shape as a function of \ion{H}{1} column density $N_{HI}$. In cylindrical and spherical neutral regions with the \ion{O}{6} source embedded inside, the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ shows an overall decrease from 3 to 1 as $N_{HI}$ increases in the range $10^{22-24}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$. In the cases of a slab geometry and other geometries with the \ion{O}{6} source outside the \ion{H}{1} region, Rayleigh escape operates to lower the flux ratio considerably. For moderate values of $N_{HI}\sim 10^{23}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$ the flux ratio behaves in a complicated way to exhibit a broad bump with a peak value of 3.5 in the case of a sphere geometry. We find that the ratio of Raman conversion efficiencies of \ion{O}{6}$\lambda\lambda$1032, 1038 ranges from 0.8 to 3.5. Our high resolution spectra of 'D' type HM~Sge and 'S' type AG~Dra obtained with the {\it Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope} show that the flux ratio $F(6825)/F(7082)$ of AG~Dra is significantly smaller than that of HM~Sge, implying that 'S' type symbiotics are characterized by higher $N_{HI}$ than 'D' type symbiotics., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Powered by a supermassive black hole with an accretion disk, the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are characterized by prominent emission lines including Balmer lines. The unification schemes of AGNs require the existence of a thick molecular torus that may hide the broad emission line region from the view of observers near the equatorial direction. In this configuration, one may expect that the far UV radiation from the central engine can be Raman scattered by neutral hydrogen to reappear around Balmer and Paschen emission lines which can be identified with broad wings. We produce H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and Pa$\alpha$ wings using a Monte Carlo technique to investigate their properties. The neutral scattering region is assumed to be a cylindrical torus specified by the inner and outer radii and the height. While the covering factor of the scattering region affects the overall strengths of the wings, the wing widths are primarily dependent on the neutral hydrogen column density $N_{\rm HI}$ being roughly proportional to $N_{\rm HI}^{1/2}$. In particular, with $N_{\rm HI}=10^{23}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$ the H$\alpha$ wings typically show a width $\sim 2\times 10^4{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$. We also find that H$\alpha$ and Pa$\alpha$ wing profiles are asymmetric with the red part stronger than the blue part and an opposite behavior is seen for H$\beta$ wings., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the high resolution spectra of the symbiotic star V1016 Cygni obtained with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph in 2003 and 2005, from which we find a broad emission feature at 4881 \AA. We propose that this broad feature is formed from Raman scattering of Ne VII$\lambda973$ by atomic hydrogen. Thus far, the detection of Raman scattered lines by atomic hydrogen is limited to O VI$\lambda\lambda$1032, 1038 and He II$\lambda\lambda$940, 972 and 1025. With the adoption of the center wavelength 973.302 \AA\ of Ne VII$\lambda$973 and consideration of the air refractive index of $n_{air}=1.000279348$, the atomic line center of the Raman scattered Ne VII feature is determined to be 4880.53 \AA. The total cross section at the line center of Ne VII$\lambda973$ is computed to be $2.62\times 10^{-22}{\rm\ cm^2}$ with the branching ratio of 0.17. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to fit the Raman scattered Ne VII$\lambda973$. Assuming that the Ne VII and He II emission regions share the same kinematics with respect to the neutral scattering region, we find that the Raman scattered He II$\lambda$972 at 4850 \AA\ and Ne VII$\lambda$973 at 4881 \AA\ are excellently fitted. We also propose that the He II and Ne VII emission regions were stationary with respect to the H I region in 2003 but that they were receding from it with a velocity $\sim 20{\rm\ km\ s^{-1}}$ in 2005., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
