Abstract

We describe a novel method of single-shot trap frequency measurement for a confined Bose-Einstein Condensate, which uses an atom laser to repeatedly sample the mean velocity of trap oscillations as a function of time. The method is able to determine the trap frequency to an accuracy of 39~ppm (16~mHz) in a single experimental realization, improving on the literature by a factor of three. Abstract

Despite quantum electrodynamics (QED) being one of the most stringently tested theories underpinning modern physics, recent precision atomic spectroscopy measurements have uncovered several small discrepancies between experiment and theory. One particularly powerful experimental observable that tests QED independently of traditional energy level measurements is the `tune-out' frequency, where the dynamic polarizability vanishes and the atom does not interact with applied laser light. In this work, we measure the `tune-out' frequency for the $2^{3\!}S_1$ state of helium between transitions to the $2^{3\!}P$ and $3^{3\!}P$ manifolds and compare it to new theoretical QED calculations. The experimentally determined value of $725\,736\,700\,$$(40_{\mathrm{stat}},260_{\mathrm{syst}})$ MHz is within ${\sim} 1.7\sigma$ of theory ($725\,736\,252(9)$ MHz), and importantly resolves both the QED contributions (${\sim} 30 \sigma$) and novel retardation (${\sim} 2 \sigma$) corrections., Comment: Main text 6 pages, 4 figures, SI 21 pages 11 figures. 3. On the survival of the quantum depletion of a condensate after release from a magnetic trap

Abstract

We present observations of the high momentum tail in expanding Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable Helium atoms released from a harmonic trap. The far-field density profile exhibits features that support identification of the tails of the momentum distribution as originating in the in-situ quantum depletion prior to release. Thus, we corroborate recent observations of slowly-decaying tails in the far-field beyond the thermal component. This observation is in conflict with the hydrodynamic theory, which predicts that the in-situ depletion does not survive when atoms are released from a trap. Indeed, the depleted tails even appear stronger in the far-field than expected before release, and we discuss the challenges of interpreting this in terms of the Tan contact in the trapped gas. In complement to these observations, full quantum simulations of the experiment show that, under the right conditions, the depletion can persist into the far field after expansion. Moreover, the simulations provide mechanisms for survival and for the the large-momentum tails to appear stronger after expansion due to an acceleration of the depleted atoms by the mean-field potential. Abstract

We present the detection of the highly forbidden $2^{3\!}S_1 \rightarrow 3^{3\!}S_1$ atomic transition in helium, the weakest transition observed in any neutral atom. Our measurements of the transition frequency, upper state lifetime, and transition strength agree well with published theoretical values, and can lead to tests of both QED contributions and different QED frameworks. To measure such a weak transition, we developed two methods using ultracold metastable ($2^{3\!}S_1$) helium atoms: low background direct detection of excited then decayed atoms for sensitive measurement of the transition frequency and lifetime; and a pulsed atom laser heating measurement for determining the transition strength. 5. Entanglement-based 3D magnetic gradiometry with an ultracold atomic scattering halo

Abstract

Ultracold collisions of Bose-Einstein condensates can be used to generate a large number of counterpropagating pairs of entangled atoms, which collectively form a thin spherical shell in momentum space, called a scattering halo. Here we generate a scattering halo composed almost entirely of pairs in a symmetric entangled state and observe a scattering angle-dependent mixing to the anti-symmetric state due to the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We report on a proof-of-principle application of the observed parity dynamics to demonstrate magnetic gradiometry, insensitive to common-mode fluctuations of the background magnetic field. Furthermore, the highly multimode nature and narrow radial width of the scattering halos enable 3D tomography of an interrogated field without the need for a scanning probe., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The violation of a Bell inequality is a striking demonstration of how quantum mechanics contradicts local realism. Although the original argument was presented with a pair of spin 1/2 particles, so far Bell inequalities have been shown to be violated using entangled pairs of photons, with recent measurements closing all possible loopholes in such a scheme. Equivalent demonstrations using massive particles have proven to be much more challenging, generally relying on post-selection of data or measuring an entanglement witness that relies on quantum mechanics. Here, we use a collision between two Bose-Einstein condensates to generate the momentum-spin entangled pairs of ultracold helium atoms. We show that a maximally entangled Bell triplet state results and report a direct observation of a strong Bell correlation witness. Based on the high degree of entanglement and the controllability of ultracold atomic systems, extensions to this scheme would allow a demonstration of nonlocality with massive entangled pairs, following the original idea of Bell. Other applications include the demonstration of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox, quantum metrology and tests of phenomena from exotic theories sensitive to such systems including gravitational decoherence and quantum gravity.

Abstract

We develop a simple yet powerful technique to study Bogoliubov-Cherenkov radiation by producing a pulsed atom laser from a strongly confined Bose-Einstein condensate. Such radiation results when the atom laser pulse falls past a Bose-Einstein condensate at high-hypersonic speeds, modifying the spatial profile to display a characteristic twin jet structure and a complicated interference pattern. The experimental observations are in excellent agreement with mean-field numerical simulations and an analytic theory. Abstract

The workhorse of atomic physics, quantum electrodynamics, is one of the best-tested theories in physics. However recent discrepancies have shed doubt on its accuracy for complex atomic systems. To facilitate the development of the theory further we aim to measure transition dipole matrix elements of metastable helium (He*) (the ideal 3 body test-bed) to the highest accuracy thus far. We have undertaken a measurement of the `tune-out wavelength' which occurs when the contributions to the dynamic polarizability from all atomic transitions sum to zero; thus illuminating an atom with this wavelength of light then produces no net energy shift. This provides a strict constraint on the transition dipole matrix elements without the complication and inaccuracy of other methods. Using a novel atom-laser based technique we have made the first measurement of the tune-out wavelength in metastable helium between the $3^{3}P_{1,2,3}$ and $2^{3}P_{1,2,3}$ states at 413.07(2) nm which compares well with the predicted value [PhysRevA.88.052515] of 413.02(9) nm. We have additionally developed many of the methods necessary to improve this measurement to the 100 fm level of accuracy where it will form the most accurate determination of transition rate information ever made in He* and provide a stringent test for atomic QED simulations. We believe this measurement to be one of the most sensitive ever made of an optical dipole potential, able to detect changes in potentials of $\sim$200 pK and is widely applicable to other species and areas of atom optics., Comment: Citation note added. Abstract

Ghost imaging is a technique -- first realized in quantum optics -- in which the image emerges from cross-correlation between particles in two separate beams. One beam passes through the object to a bucket (single-pixel) detector, while the second beam's spatial profile is measured by a high resolution (multi-pixel) detector but never interacts with the object. Neither detector can reconstruct the image independently. However, until now ghost imaging has only been demonstrated with photons. Here we report the first realisation of ghost imaging of an object using massive particles. In our experiment, the two beams are formed by correlated pairs of ultracold metastable helium atoms, originating from two colliding Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) via $s$-wave scattering. We use the higher-order Kapitza-Dirac effect to generate the large number of correlated atom pairs required, enabling the creation of a ghost image with good visibility and sub-millimetre resolution. Future extensions could include ghost interference as well as tests of EPR entantlement and Bell's inequalities.

Abstract

We present the first measurement for helium atoms of the tune-out wavelength at which the atomic polarizability vanishes. We utilise a novel, highly sensitive technique for precisely measuring the effect of variations in the trapping potential of confined metastable ($2^{3}S_{1}$) helium atoms illuminated by a perturbing laser light field. The measured tune-out wavelength of 413.0938($9_{Stat.}$)($20_{Syst.}$) nm compares well with the value predicted by a theoretical calculation (413.02(9) nm) which is sensitive to finite nuclear mass, relativistic, and quantum electro-dynamic (QED) effects. Abstract

A thermal ignition model is used in parallel with single crystal solid and product fluid Equations of State (EOSs) from the literature to calculate the time and distance to homogeneous shock initiation in single crystal 1,3-propanediol-2,2-bis[(nitrooxy)methyl]-tetranitrate (PETN). The ignition model is a highly constrained, globalized representation of the temperature and pressure dependent decomposition chemistry of PETN. Initiation in the single crystal proceeds via a homogeneous initiation mechanism where thermal ignition results from a well defined initial shock state (P,V,T). The transition to steady detonation at an observed location (x*, t*) then follows when a superdetonation wave initiated by this thermal ignition overtakes the input shock wave. In the traditional approach, P and V are determined directly from measurements and conservation of mass and momentum, leaving T relatively unconstrained due to the extremely nonlinear dependence of T on P, V in the EOS. We present an iterative algorithm to calculate T and V as a function of P from the time to thermal ignition, superdetonation, and intersection at (x*, t*) observed in each experiment. These states are consistent with the unreacted EOS but allow an independent determination of the energy deposited into heating by the input shock. The calculated states compare favorably with pressures and states of compression observed in the experiment but provide a new and interesting set of temperatures associated with each state. We discuss these fully determined initial shock states in (P, V, T) in the context of PETN thermodynamics, specifically the solid/liquid phase boundary at high temperature and pressure. Abstract

Exploding bridgewire detonators are an industry standard technology used for over 75 years and valued for their precise timing and safety characteristics. Despite widespread use, their functional mechanism remains controversial with both shock and non-shock mechanisms attributed. In this work, we reexamine the bridgewire detonator function with a suite of modern diagnostics and compare these observations with the existing literature. Traditional detonator observations consisted of voltage applied to the bridgewire and time dependent current, integral response measurements such as case motion, and more recently Schlieren imaging of the detonator surface. In this work, we add visible light emission, x-ray transmission, proton radiography, and temperature measurements during detonator function in addition to voltage, current, and function times. The addition of in situ observations of light emission, temperature, and density gives us new insight into the mechanisms of explosive bridgewire detonator function. We see a distinct separation in time, location, symmetry, and velocity of bridgewire output and detonation onset. During the time between bridgewire burst and the initiation of detonation, we observe a temperature ramp in the input pellet. Abstract

The solid, secondary explosive nitramine-octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7 or HMX has four different stable polymorphs which have different molecular conformations, crystalline structures, and densities, making structural phase transitions between these nontrivial. Previous studies of the kinetics of the β–δ HMX structural transition found this to happen by a nucleation and growth mechanism, where growth was governed by the heat of fusion, or melting, even though the phase transition temperature is more than 100 K below the melting point. A theory known as virtual melting could easily justify this since the large volume difference in the two phases creates a strain at their interface that can lower the melting point to the phase transition temperature through a relaxation of the elastic energy. To learn more about structural phase transitions in organic crystalline solids and virtual melting, here we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction to study another structural phase transition in HMX, γ–δ. Again, second order kinetics are observed which fit to the same nucleation and growth model associated with growth by melting even though the volume change in this transition is too small to lower the melting point by interfacial strain. To account for this, we present a more general model illustrating that melting over a very thin layer at the interface between the two phases reduces the total interfacial energy and is therefore thermodynamically favorable and can drive the structural phase transition in the absence of large volume changes. Mechanisms of roughness perception are still unknown, especially under different conditions such as lubricants with varying viscosities, different temperatures, or under different force loads during the observation of the surface. This work aims to determine the effect of those unknown factors, with applied sensory tests on 62 healthy participants. Roughness sensation of fingertip was tested under different lubricants including water and diluted syrup solutions at room temperature (25C) and body temperature (37C) by using simple pair-wise comparison to observe the just noticeable difference threshold and perception levels. Additionally, in this research applied force load during roughness observation was tested with pair-wise ranking method to illustrate its possible effect on human sensation. Obtained results showed that human's capability of roughness discrimination reduces with increased viscosity of the lubricant, where the influence of the temperature was not found to be significant. Moreover, the increase in the applied force load showed an increase in the sensitivity of roughness discrimination. Observed effects of the applied factors were also used for estimating the oral sensation of texture during eating. These findings are significant for our fundamental understanding to texture perception, and for the development of new food products with controlled textural features. Practical applications Texture discrimination ability, more specifically roughness discrimination capability, is a significant factor for preference and appreciation for a wide range of materials, including food, furniture, or fabric. To explore the mechanism of sensation capability through tactile senses, it is necessary to identify the relevant factors and define characteristics that dominate the process involved. The results that will be obtained under these principles will be helpful for the industry in the development and optimization of new products, especially for the individuals' with special needs. With this exploratory study, we illustrate differential thresholds of tactile senses under changing conditions of surface lubrication and applied force load. Also, the tests were carried out under different temperatures to understand the oral sensation capability. The results and correlations may provide useful information about texture sensitivity and also methodologies could be applied to general sensory studies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular effects of adding once-weekly treatment with exenatide to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes, with or without previous cardiovascular disease, to receive subcutaneous injections of extended-release exenatide at a dose of 2 mg or matching placebo once weekly. The primary composite outcome was the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. The coprimary hypotheses were that exenatide, administered once weekly, would be noninferior to placebo with respect to safety and superior to placebo with respect to efficacy. RESULTS: In all, 14,752 patients (of whom 10,782 [73.1%] had previous cardiovascular disease) were followed for a median of 3.2 years (interquartile range, 2.2 to 4.4). A primary composite outcome event occurred in 839 of 7356 patients (11.4%; 3.7 events per 100 person-years) in the exenatide group and in 905 of 7396 patients (12.2%; 4.0 events per 100 person-years) in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.00), with the intention-to-treat analysis indicating that exenatide, administered once weekly, was noninferior to placebo with respect to safety (P

Abstract

We have developed a new thermodynamic theory of the quasiliquid layer, which has been shown to be effective in modeling the phenomenon in a number of molecular systems. Here we extend our analysis to H2O ice, which has obvious implications for environmental and atmospheric chemistry. In the model, the liquid layer exists in contact with an ice defined as a two-dimensional lattice of sites. The system free energy is defined by the bulk free energies of ice Ih and liquid water and is minimized in the grand canonical ensemble. An additional configurational entropy term arises from the occupation of the lattice sites. Furthermore, the theory predicts that the layer thickness as a function of temperature depends only on the liquid activity. Two additional models are derived, where slightly different approximations are used to define the free energy. With these two models, we illustrate the connection between the quasiliquid phenomenon and multilayer adsorption and the possibility of a two-dimensional phase transition connecting a dilute low coverage phase of adsorbed H2O and the quasiliquid phase. The model predictions are in agreement with a subset of the total suite of experimental measurements of the liquid thickness on H2O ice as a function of temperature. The theory indicates that the quasiliquid layer is actually equivalent to normal liquid water, and we discuss the impact of such an identification. In particular, observations of the liquid layer to temperatures as low as 200 K indicate the possibility that the quasiliquid is, in fact, an example of deeply supercooled normal water. Finally, we briefly discuss the obvious extension of the pure liquid theory to a thermodynamic theory of interfacial solutions on ice in the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The adsorption of HCl on the surface of H2O ice has been measured at temperatures and pressures relevant to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. The measured HCl surface coverage is found to be at least 100 times lower than currently assumed in models of chlorine catalyzed ozone destruction in cold regions of the upper atmosphere. Measurements were conducted in a closed system by simultaneous application of surface spectroscopy and gas phase mass spectrometry to fully characterize vapor/solid equilibrium. Surface adsorption is clearly distinguished from bulk liquid or solid phases. From 180 to 200 K, submonolayer adsorption of HCl is well described by a Bragg-Williams modified Langmuir model which includes the dissociation of HCl into H+ and Cl- ions. Furthermore, adsorption is consistent with two distinct states on the ice substrate, one in which the ions only weakly adsorb on separate sites, and another where the ions adsorb as an H+-Cl- pair on a single site with adsorption energy comparable to the bulk trihydrate. The number of substrate H2O molecules per adsorption site is also consistent with the stoichiometry of bulk hydrates under these conditions. The ionic states exist in equilibrium, and the total adsorption energy is a function of the relative population of both states. These observations and model provide a quantitative connection between the thermodynamics of the bulk and interfacial phases of HCl/H2O, and represent a consistent physicochemical model of the equilibrium system. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

In this paper we present second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments designed to confirm the mechanism and quantify the transformation kinetics of the β-δ solid state phase transition in the organic nitramine molecule octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). The β phase adopts a centrosymmetric crystallographic configuration (P2[sub 1]/c) while the δ phase adopts a noncentrosymmetric one (P6[sub 1](P6[sub 5])). As expected, this results in a very poor generation of SHG intensity from the β phase, while the δ phase is very efficient, rivaling KH[sub 2]PO[sub 4] in absolute efficiency. SHG thus provides a very high sensitivity zero background probe of the δ phase. We discuss the use of this signal as a quantitative measure of the δ phase mole fraction in ensembles of free HMX crystals and crystals embedded in a visco-elastic polymer matrix. We report imaging experiments where the spatial characteristics of the transformation are shown to be consistent with nucleation from a low density of initial sites, followed by rapid growth. We also report experiments where the total integrated SHG is measured and used to infer the transition progress as a function of time in a series of isothermal experiments on both β-δ conversion and δ-β reversion. Additionally, reversibility experiments are reported which are used to verify both the volumetric mechanism of SHG generation in this system and the independence of these results to the internal stress state of the polycrystalline samples. We compare the measured SHG intensity as a function of time for a range of temperatures with predictions of the two state kinetic model presented in the accompanying paper [B. F. Henson et al., J. Chem. Phys. 117, 3780 (2002)]. We perform a set of parameter optimization calculations based on agreement with the predictions of the model. In this and the accompanying paper [L. Smilowitz et al., J. Chem. Phys. 117, 3789 (2002)] we present a theoretical treatment and experimental study, respectively, of the β-δ solid state phase transition in the organic nitramine molecule octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). The transition is thermodynamically first order with a measured latent heat, occurs via nucleation and growth, and exhibits a thermally activated rate of transformation. We construct a two state kinetic model of the system consisting of equilibrium terms first order in the β or δ mole fraction simulating nucleation, and second order in β and δ simulating growth. The model has four rate constants, the temperature dependence of which is described by eight parameters. We use the transition state formulation of the rate constants and apply a thermodynamic model of the activated state that associates the difference in activated state free energy in forward and reverse directions with the equilibrium transition free energy, and identifies the activated state of the growth process with a metastable melt. By associating components of the activated state free energy with independently measured thermodynamic energies we reduce the degrees of freedom to three, which we fix initially by comparison with previously published kinetic data. We apply the model to both the β-δ and δ-β transformations over a temperature range from 300 to 700 K in order to assess the theoretical validity of the model. The model reproduces the half time of the transition over this entire range, spanning conversion times from 10[sup 6] to 10[sup -4] s. In the accompanying paper we present an experimental study of the kinetics and mechanism of the phase transition based on second harmonic generation spectroscopy. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular safety and efficacy of many current antihyperglycemic agents, including saxagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, are unclear. METHODS: We randomly assigned 16,492 patients with type 2 diabetes who had a history of, or were at risk for, cardiovascular events to receive saxagliptin or placebo and followed them for a median of 2.1 years. Physicians were permitted to adjust other medications, including antihyperglycemic agents. The primary end point was a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or ischemic stroke. RESULTS: A primary end-point event occurred in 613 patients in the saxagliptin group and in 609 patients in the placebo group (7.3% and 7.2%, respectively, according to 2-year Kaplan-Meier estimates; hazard ratio with saxagliptin, 1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89 to 1.12; P=0.99 for superiority; P<0.001 for noninferiority); the results were similar in the "on-treatment" analysis (hazard ratio, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.91 to 1.17). The major secondary end point of a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, hospitalization for unstable angina, coronary revascularization, or heart failure occurred in 1059 patients in the saxagliptin group and in 1034 patients in the placebo group (12.8% and 12.4%, respectively, according to 2-year Kaplan-Meier estimates; hazard ratio, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.94 to 1.11; P=0.66). More patients in the saxagliptin group than in the placebo group were hospitalized for heart failure (3.5% vs. 2.8%; hazard ratio, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.51; P=0.007).
