Background This study investigated the experiences and perceptions of operational members of Victoria Police in relation to their contacts with people with intellectual disability (ID). Key interests for exploration included how frequently and in what context police reported coming into contact with people with ID, how they made this identification, and the challenges they experienced at this interface. Methods Participants comprised 229 operational police members who attended mandatory firearms training sessions over a 2-week period in Melbourne, Australia. Results Police reported coming into contact with people they believed to have an ID on a regular basis and for a wide variety of reasons. They were most likely to base their knowledge on job-related experiences and were most likely to identify individuals on the basis of physical and behavioural cues. The most common challenges were communication, and gaining access to assistance and co-operation from other service providers. While many considered themselves capable in their interactions with those with ID, those who identified that they were most in need of training reported lower confidence in how to respond in these encounters. Conclusions Future training needs to focus on differentiating between mental illness and ID, techniques for enhancing identification and communication, and the inclusion of hands-on scenario-based sessions involving an interdisciplinary approach.

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, a damaging invasive pest, was discovered in February 2001 in Brisbane, Australia at two sites, Fisherman Islands and suburban Richlands-Wacol. Using four microsatellite loci and the protein marker Gp-9, we compared the two infestations with each other, and with potential source populations in North and South America to better understand the history of their introduction to Brisbane. Based on an analysis of molecular variance, as well as a maximum likelihood tree of colonies from the two Australian sites, we found that the two sites were genetically distinct and were almost certainly introduced separately. All of the colonies at Fisherman Islands were monogynous, headed by a single queen, while the Richlands-Wacol site had a mixture of single-queen monogynous and multiple-queen polygynous colonies. However, the monogynous and polygynous colonies at the Richlands-Wacol site were not genetically distinct from each other, and probably constitute a single, mixed introduction. Based on allele frequencies at the microsatellite loci, and Gp-9, both Australian infestations were more similar to North American populations than to South American, though the Fisherman Islands infestation was intermediate, making it difficult to assign. Thus, there has been one introduction from either a North or South American monogynous population at Fisherman Islands, and one introduction from a mixed monogynous/polygynous North American population at Richlands-Wacol. These findings have implications for the control of the current infestations, as well as for the quarantine regulations necessary to prevent additional introductions to Australia.

This paper describes the computational work performed by five of the fifteen partners in the Brite-Euram project UNSI, for the prediction of static aeroelastic configurations and dynamic flutter response at transonic conditions, using advanced time-domain fluid-structure coupling methods. The aerodynamic models, mechanical models, and coupling strategies implemented in the different solvers are presented. A code to code validation of the fluid-structure coupled solvers has been achieved in the case of the highly flexible MDO wing. The coupled codes have each been used first for the computation of steady state flow and static deformations at different flight conditions. The investigation of flutter has been carried out for off-design, heavy-cruise flight conditions, using time-consistent numerical simulations. The data contained in this set consists of pressure tire histories measured on the ceiling of an empty rectangular cavity, and were measured as p&t of a joint BAe./DERA programme at the ARA wind tunnel at Bedford during November 1991 The overall programme consisted of several configurations, with bodies positioned at various proximities to the cavity, but the data presented here only considers the empty cavity, configured for both shallow and deep cases. Data were measured using Kulite transducers along the centreline of the rig, (which did not coincide with the centreline of the cavity itself). and, in an alterative configuration, on the centreline of the cavity. Measurements taken off the cavity centreline, but not included here, indicated that 3D effects were not significant., The original document contains color images.
