The southern Hikurangi subduction zone exhibits significant along‐strike variation in convergence rate and obliquity, sediment thickness and, uniquely, the increasing proximity of southern Hikurangi to, and impingement on, the incoming continental Chatham Rise, an ancient Gondwana accretionary complex. There are corresponding changes in the morphology and structure of the Hikurangi accretionary prism. We combine widely spaced multichannel seismic reflection profiles with high resolution bathymetry and previous interpretations to characterize the structure and the history of the accretionary prism since 2 Ma. The southern Hikurangi margin can be divided into three segments. A northeastern segment (A) characterized by a moderately wide (∼70 km), low taper (∼5°) prism recording uninhibited outward growth in the last ∼1 Myr. Deformation resolvable in seismic reflection data accounts for ∼20 % of plate convergence, comparable with the central Hikurangi margin further North. A central segment (B) characterized by a narrow (∼30 km), moderate taper (∼8°) prism, with earlier (∼2‐∼1 Ma) shortening than segment A. Outward prism growth ceased coincidentally with development of major strike‐slip faults in the prism interior, reduced margin‐normal convergence rate, and the onset of impingement on the incoming Chatham Rise to the south. A southwestern segment (C) marks the approximate southern termination of subduction but widens to ∼50 km due to rapid outward migration of the deformation front via fault reactivation within the now‐underthrusting corner of the Chatham Rise. Segment C exhibits minimal shortening as margin‐normal subduction velocity decreases and plate motion is increasingly taken up by interior thrusts and strike‐slip faults. Abstract The southern end of New Zealand's Hikurangi subduction margin accommodates highly oblique convergence between the Pacific and Australian plates. We carry out two-dimensional (2D) seismic reflection tomography and pre-stack depth migrations on two seismic lines to gain insight into the nature of subducted sediments and upper plate faulting and dewatering at the toe of the wedge. We also investigate the NE to SW evolution of emergent upper plate thrust faulting using 47 seismic lines spanning an along-strike distance of ∼270 km. The upper sequence of sediments that ultimately gets subducted (the MES sequence) has an anomalously-low seismic velocity character. At the southwestern end of the margin, ∼150 km east of Kaikōura, the MES sequence has experienced greater compaction (for an equivalent effective vertical stress) than it has some 200 km further to the northeast. This difference is likely attributable to greater horizontal compression in the southwest caused by impingement of the Chatham Rise on the deformation front. Relationships between velocity and effective vertical stress suggest that the MES sequence is well-drained in the vicinity of frontal thrusts, corroborated by evidence for upper plate dewatering along those thrusts. Effective drainage of the MES sequence likely promotes interplate coupling on the southern Hikurangi margin. The décollement is generally hosted near a seismic reflector known as “Reflector 7”. Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multi-megaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1-20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Pre-stack depth migration data across the Hikurangi margin, East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand, are used to derive subducting slab geometry, upper crustal structure and seismic velocities resolved to ∼14 km depth. We investigate the potential relationship between the crustal architecture, fluid migration and short-term geodetically determined slow-slip events. The subduction interface is a shallow dipping thrust at < 7 km depth near the trench and steps down to 14 km depth along an ∼18 km long ramp, beneath Porangahau Ridge. This apparent bend in the décollement is associated with splay fault branching and coincides with a zone of maximum slip (90 mm) inferred on the subduction interface during slow slip events in June and July 2011. A low-velocity zone beneath the plate interface, up-dip of the plate interface ramp, is interpreted as fluid-rich overpressured sediments capped with a low permeability condensed layer of chalk and interbedded mudstones. Fluid rich sediments have been imbricated by splay faults in a region that coincides with the step down in the décollement from the top of subducting sediments to the oceanic crust and contribute to spatial variation in frictional properties of the plate interface that may promote slow slip behavior in the region. Further, transient fluid migration along splay faults at Porangahau Ridge may signify stress changes during slow slip.

The ANDRILL (Antarctic Drilling Project) McMurdo Ice Shelf (MIS) project drilled 1285 m of sediment in Hole AND-1B, representing the past 12 m.y. of glacial history. Downhole geophysical logs were acquired to a depth of 1018 mbsf (meters below seafloor), and are complementary to data acquired from the core. The natural gamma radiation (NGR) and magnetic susceptibility logs are particularly useful for understanding lithological and paleoenvironmental change at ANDRILL McMurdo Ice Shelf Hole AND-1B. NGR logs cover the entire interval from the seafloor to 1018 mbsf, and magnetic susceptibility and other logs covered the open hole intervals between 692 and 1018 and 237–342 mbsf. In the upper part of AND-1B, clear alternations between low and high NGR values distinguish between diatomite (lacking minerals containing naturally radioactive K, U, and Th) and diamictite (containing K-bearing clays, K-feldspar, mica, and heavy minerals). In the lower open hole logged section, NGR and magnetic susceptibility can also distinguish claystones (rich in K-bearing clay minerals, relatively low in magnetite) and diamictites (relatively high in magnetite). Sandstones can be distinguished by their high resistivity values in AND-1B. On the basis of these three downhole logs, diamictite, claystones, and sandstones can be predicted correctly for 74% of the 692–1018 mbsf interval. The logs were then used to predict facies for the 6% of this interval that was unrecovered by coring. Given the understanding of the physical property characteristics of different facies, it is also possible to identify subtle changes in lithology from the physical properties and help refine parts of the lithostratigraphy, for example, the varying terrigenous content of diatomites and the transitions from subice diamictite to open-water diatomite.

Rock Garden is a broad ridge system that sits atop the deforming accretionary wedge of the convergent Hikurangi Margin, where the Pacific Plate (on the east) is being subducted beneath the Australian Plate (on the west) (see Figure 1A). It is inferred that Rock Garden’s origin is owed to subduction of a seamount, where the topographic high on the down-going plate has caused localised uplift and flexural doming of the seafloor.1–3 Active deformation of the ridge is therefore likely to be extensional in nature, in response to the uplift and doming – an atypical deformation style for the regionally compressional tectonics of the subduction margin. The geology of the ridge is not well constrained, but dredge samples indicate that the ‘country rock’ probably consists of relatively well consolidated mudrocks with low primary porosity.4,5 Gas hydrates are inferred to be widespread beneath much of the Rock Garden ridge. This is based on the observation of numerous bottom simulating reflections (BSRs) in several seismic data sets.1,6,7 BSRs in gas hydrate provinces are usually attributed to gas hydrate overlying free gas.8 Therefore, such BSRs are seismic manifestations of the base of gas hydrate stability (BGHS), above which conditions are generally suited for gas hydrate formation and below which they are not. The region between the seafloor and the BGHS, which are sub-parallel to each other, is defined as the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ). The ridge has been a focus site for gas- and gas hydrate-related research since 1996, when Lewis and Marshall first documented methane seepage through the seafloor into the water column.9 In 2004, seismic images of BSRs and gas pockets beneath the ridge were presented and a link was made between sub-seafloor gas distribution and seafloor seepage.1 More recently, greater data coverage revealed gas migration pathways beneath several seep sites, requiring the migration of gas through the GHSZ.7 In addition to studies of gas seepage, a

Geophysical investigations of the northern Hikurangi subduction zone northeast of New Zealand, image fore‐arc and surrounding upper lithospheric structures. A seismic velocity (Vp) field is determined from seismic wide‐angle data, and our structural interpretation is supported by multichannel seismic reflection stratigraphy and gravity and magnetic modeling. We found that the subducting Hikurangi Plateau carries about 2 km of sediments above a 2 km mixed layer of volcaniclastics, limestone, and chert. The upper plateau crust is characterized by Vp = 4.9–6.7 km/s overlying the lower crust with Vp > 7.1 km/s. Gravity modeling yields a plateau thickness around 10 km. The reactivated Raukumara fore‐arc basin is >10 km deep, deposited on 5–10 km thick Australian crust. The fore‐arc mantle of Vp > 8 km/s appears unaffected by subduction hydration processes. The East Cape Ridge fore‐arc high is underlain by a 3.5 km deep strongly magnetic (3.3 A/m) high‐velocity zone, interpreted as part of the onshore Matakaoa volcanic allochthon and/or uplifted Raukumara Basin basement of probable oceanic crustal origin. Beneath the trench slope, we interpret low‐seismic‐velocity, high‐attenuation, low‐density fore‐arc material as accreted and recycled, suggesting that underplating and uplift destabilizes East Cape Ridge, triggering two‐sided mass wasting. Mass balance calculations indicate that the proposed accreted and recycled material represents 25–100% of all incoming sediment, and any remainder could be accounted for through erosion of older accreted material into surrounding basins. We suggest that continental mass flux into the mantle at subduction zones may be significantly overestimated because crustal underplating beneath fore‐arc highs have not properly been accounted for.

The central part of the 2500-km long Tonga-Kermadec Trench is characterized by the subduction of the Louisville Ridge and unusually large seismicity approximately 200-300 km to the south of this ridge subduction. From this region we show preliminary results which have been derived from the recently acquired interpretation of seismic wide-angle reflection/refraction data. The data were collected along an almost 500-km long transect carried out in April 2007 using the R/V Sonne in order to determine the upper lithospheric structures of the incoming Pacific Plate and the overriding Australian Plate across the Colville and Kermadec Ridges. This transect lies immediately north of Raoul Island, the largest of the Kermadec Islands and which is presently a highly active volcano. This study is part of the MANGO project (Marine Geoscientific Inverstigations on the Input and Output of the Kermadec Subduction Zone) which comprises a 1000-km long working area north of New Zealand's North Island. It covers the transition from subduction of the Hikurangi Plateau in the south to erosive subduction of normal Pacific oceanic crust in the centre and thence accretionary subduction further north. Overall the subduction is accompanied by northward increasing seismicity. The aim of this project is to understand the transition throughout the different regimes, the variation of the structures to explain the accompanying seismicty, and the role and evolution of the stratovolcanoes. This will be achieved by analysing the structures of the sediment, crust and upper mantle and also material transfers from its input and output through subduction zone processes.

The central part of the South Island of New Zealand is a product of the transpressive continental collision of the Pacific and Australian plates during the past 5 million years, prior to which the plate boundary was largely transcurrent for over 10 My. Subduction occurs at the north (west dipping) and south (east dipping) of South Island. The deformation is largely accommodated by the ramping up of the Pacific plate over the Australian plate and near-symmetric mantle shortening. The initial asymmetric crustal deformation may be the result of an initial difference in lithospheric strength or an inherited suture resulting from earlier plate motions. Delamination of the Pacific plate occurs resulting in the uplift and exposure of mid-crustal rocks at the plate boundary fault (Alpine fault) to form a foreland mountain chain. In addition, an asymmetric crustal root (additional 8 - 17 km) is formed, with an underlying mantle downwarp. The crustal root, which thickens southwards, comprises the delaminated lower crust and a thickened overlying middle crust. Lower crust is variable in thickness along the orogen, which may arise from convergence in and lower lithosphere extrusion along the orogen. Low velocity zones in the crust occur adjacent to the plate boundary (Alpine fault) in the Australian and Pacific plates, where they are attributed to fracturing of the upper crust as a result of flexural bending for the Australian plate and to high pressure fluids in the crust derived from prograde metamorphism of the crustal rocks for the Pacific plate.
