1. Tackling local environmental challenges with livelihoods strategies: insights from small-scale farmers in the vulnerable region of Ghana

Abstract: Climate risks pose significant challenges to farmers' livelihoods, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where the complex interplay of factors intensifies the impact on small-scale farmers (SSFs). While there is a broad understanding of climate change's effects on agriculture, there is a need for deeper insights into the key determinants and preferences influencing SSFs' adaptation strategies in vulnerable regions to better inform agricultural policy and planning. Data were collected from 325 SSF randomly selected in Juaben Municipality, Ghana. Quantitative analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The study identified shifting planting dates, altering farm operation timings and mulching as primary adaptation strategies. Significant associations were found between socio-economic factors and the adaptation strategies employed by SSFs, with the Relative Importance Index highlighting affordable tools, land ownership and access to fertile land as crucial for enhancing livelihoods and adaptation. The findings underscore the need for training programmes to equip extension officers with the knowledge to support SSFs in developing skills and efforts related to adaptation and viable livelihood options.

2. Perception of the services and disservices from urban forest and trees in the Garden City of West Africa

Abstract: The growth of trees in urban areas brings forth an extensive array of services and disservices, the comprehension of which can assist urban forestry professionals in advancing a more sustainable urban forest ecosystem. This paper assesses the perception of urban residents on the services and disservices from urban trees in a less represented geographic area. Using a mixed method approach, primary data was gathered from 396 urban inhabitants in the study area. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess perception of services and disservices from the urban trees. Using a principal component analysis, it was found out that the most important services provided by urban trees were health and climate improvement as well as energy, esthetic and environmental benefits. These services explained 50.8% of citizens’ perception variance and are linked to basic human needs. Additionally, the Monte Carlo parallel analysis-based on exploratory factor analysis revealed that the underlying problems that needs to be addressed were related to poor management and maintenance of urban trees, destruction of infrastructure by trees and issues related to safety including parks and gardens serving as hideouts for criminals in the city. These components were predicting 53.3% of the problems and disservices of urban trees. The results provide a valuable insight for urban forestry professionals. The findings imply that institutional assistance should be increased, and the legislative structure changed to address these challenges to sustain urban forestry.

3. Pharmacological and phytochemical properties of a promising African medicinal plant, Sterculia setigera Delile: A systematic review

Abstract: Various parts of the plant, Sterculia setigera Delile, from the Malvaceae family are largely used in most African countries for medicinal purposes. In African traditional medicine, the plant is used to treat fever, bacterial infection, diarrhoea, epilepsy, anaemia, and hypertension. Due to its high therapeutic properties, it has become a highly sought-after plant by researchers for pharmacological properties aimed at validating or providing scientific backing for its traditional use. Additionally, efforts to obtain small natural molecules from the plant as scaffolds for the development of new drugs have been explored. Although it is extensively used in traditional medicine and its phytochemical composition and biological activity are widely studied, there is no review paper that systematically analyses its biological activities and phytochemical composition. Hence, this review provides a systematic overview of the biological activities, phytochemical constituents, and ethnomedicinal properties of the plant. The data show S. setigera is a promising medicinal plant with pharmacological potential and thus can be useful for the development of novel therapeutic agents.

4. Risk Factors Contributing to Reinfection by SARS-CoV-2: A Systematic Review

Abstract: This article aims to systematize the evidence regarding risk factors associated with COVID-19 reinfection. We conducted a systematic review of all the scientific publications available until August 2022. To ensure the inclusion of the most recent and relevant information, we searched the PubMed and Scopus databases. Thirty studies were reviewed, with a significant proportion being analytical observational case-control and cohort studies. Upon qualitative analysis of the available evidence, it appears that the probability of reinfection is higher for individuals who are not fully immunized when exposed to a new variant, females, those with pre-existing chronic diseases, individuals aged over 60, and those who have previously experienced severe symptoms of the disease or are immunocompromised. In conclusion, further analytical observational case-control studies are necessary to gain a better understanding of the risk factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) reinfection.

5. Biological Barriers for Drug Delivery and Development of Innovative Therapeutic Approaches in HIV, Pancreatic Cancer, and Hemophilia A/B

Abstract: Biological barriers remain a major obstacle for the development of innovative therapeutics. Depending on a disease’s pathophysiology, the involved tissues, cell populations, and cellular components, drugs often have to overcome several biological barriers to reach their target cells and become effective in a specific cellular compartment. Human biological barriers are incredibly diverse and include multiple layers of protection and obstruction. Importantly, biological barriers are not only found at the organ/tissue level, but also include cellular structures such as the outer plasma membrane, the endolysosomal machinery, and the nuclear envelope. Nowadays, clinicians have access to a broad arsenal of therapeutics ranging from chemically synthesized small molecules, biologicals including recombinant proteins (such as monoclonal antibodies and hormones), nucleic-acid-based therapeutics, and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), to modern viral-vector-mediated gene therapy. In the past decade, the therapeutic landscape has been changing rapidly, giving rise to a multitude of innovative therapy approaches. In 2018, the FDA approval of patisiran paved the way for small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to become a novel class of nucleic-acid-based therapeutics, which—upon effective drug delivery to their target cells—allow to elegantly regulate the post-transcriptional gene expression. The recent approvals of valoctocogene roxaparvovec and etranacogene dezaparvovec for the treatment of hemophilia A and B, respectively, mark the breakthrough of viral-vector-based gene therapy as a new tool to cure disease. A multitude of highly innovative medicines and drug delivery methods including mRNA-based cancer vaccines and exosome-targeted therapy is on the verge of entering the market and changing the treatment landscape for a broad range of conditions. In this review, we provide insights into three different disease entities, which are clinically, scientifically, and socioeconomically impactful and have given rise to many technological advancements: acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as a predominant infectious disease, pancreatic carcinoma as one of the most lethal solid cancers, and hemophilia A/B as a hereditary genetic disorder. Our primary objective is to highlight the overarching principles of biological barriers that can be identified across different disease areas. Our second goal is to showcase which therapeutic approaches designed to cross disease-specific biological barriers have been promising in effectively treating disease. In this context, we will exemplify how the right selection of the drug category and delivery vehicle, mode of administration, and therapeutic target(s) can help overcome various biological barriers to prevent, treat, and cure disease.

Abstract: Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Abstract: Context and background Land and forest play a critical role in climate change since a rise in deforestation and land degradation contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. If there is one thing that will sabotage efforts to address deforestation and the climate crisis, it is corruption. Yet corruption is strangely missing from the discussions and academic literature on forest and lands in many countries. In Ghana, how corruption in the land and forestry sectors affect climate change adaptation and mitigation has received very little attention. This study addresses this issue from a theoretical and empirical stand points. Goal and Objectives: The objectives of the study are (a) to assess the causes and types of corruption in the forestry and land use sector and (b) to analyze how these types of corruption affect climate change adaptation and mitigation, and (c) to assess the anti-corruption measures in place to deal with these types corruption. Methodology: The study adopted a mixed method approach involving a review of relevant literature on forest and land governance in Ghana as well as a review of literature on corruption and climate change. This was supported with expert interviews and discussions. Results The study found out that different types of corruption exist in the forestry and land use sector that affect climate change adaptation and mitigation including elite capture of benefits from climate change programs, extortion of money for land services, bribery of forestry officials, kick-back and rent-seeking. Existing anti-corruption structures in place have not been effective in dealing with these types of corruption in Ghana due to weak judicial system, politicization of corruption and crime and lack of political will to enforce laws. The study recommends depoliticization of corruption, enforcement of anti-corruption laws and empowerment of local stakeholders to play the watch-dog role.

Abstract: In professional use cases like police or fire brigade missions, coordinated and systematic force management is crucial for achieving operational success during intervention by the emergency personnel. A real-time situation picture enhances the coordination of the team. This situation picture includes not only an overview of the environment but also the positions, i.e., localization, of the emergency forces. The overview of the environment can be obtained either from known situation pictures like floorplans or by scanning the environment with the aid of visual sensors. The self-localization problem can be solved outdoors using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), but it is not fully solved indoors, where the GNSS signal might not be received or might be degraded. In this paper, we propose a novel combination of an inertial localization technique based on simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with 3D building scans, which are used as prior information, for geo-referencing the positions, obtaining a situation picture, and finally visualizing the results with an appropriate visualization tool. We developed a new method for converting point clouds into a hexagonal prism map specifically designed for our SLAM algorithm. With this combination, we could keep the equipment for first responders as lightweight as required. We showed that the positioning led to an average accuracy of less than 1m indoors, and the final visualization including the building layout obtained by the 3D building reconstruction will be advantageous for coordinating first responder operations.

10. Stage-directing the Virtual Reality Experience: Developing a Theoretical Framework for Immersive Literacy

Abstract: Despite the incremental improvement and inclusion of immersive technologies in entertainment, training simulation, fine art, inclusive design, academia, and education; Virtual Reality (VR) still faces issues regarding its ability to compete with films and animation in visual storytelling without merging into the realm of video games. In 2015, Pixar’s Ed Catmull warned moviemakers that Virtual Reality is “not storytelling” and argued that the linear aspect of narratives poses an obstacle that cannot be overcome with VR. In contrast, Catmull argued that VR has immense application in games. However, VR creators have been pushing the boundaries and possibilities of delivering narratives in virtual spaces. In 2019, the VR experience “Gloomy Eyes” was presented at the Sundance festivals featuring a 30-minute story split between 3 episodes. The simulation is structured to provide its audience with some degrees of freedom while guiding them intuitively through the virtual space. In 2021, Blue Zoo also released a VR project titled “The Beast” featuring a cyclist powering up a snow-covered mountain. The short film was entirely created in Quill VR with the intention of being treated like a theatrical play rather than a film. While the creators of “The Beast” have explicitly mentioned the influence of theatre, “Gloomy Eyes” draws its visual language from similar theatrical roots. This paper argues that VR has been mistakenly compared to film and animation when it should be associated with theatre. The audience of both are not passive as they are during the screening of a film or animation. The space and the medium demands participation through their presence in the same space with the actors/characters. Theatre presents a promising candidate for extracting criteria that could be used to develop a visual language for VR. This research aims to formulate a framework for developing a VR visual language through comparison between character-driven narratives in VR such as “Gloomy Eyes” and “The Beast”. The comparative study establishes overlapping criteria and characteristics found in the structure, literacy, sound, and delivery format of narratives in a theatrical performance. These criteria are then outlined and discussed, drawing from affordance theory and discussions on aural and visual attention in theatre, to form a holistic view in approaching VR literacy.

Abstract: Introduction: The advancement of technology has made the cell phone a fundamental part of daily life and a potential carrier of bacteria. Objective: To evaluate the factors associated with the presence of gram-negative bacteria in the cell phones of the merchants of the main market of the city of Huanuco, Peru. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample consisted of 116 merchants and was obtained by stratified probabilistic sampling. Samples of their cell phones were taken and cultured manually, and sensitivity was determined with antibiogram discs. The instrument was the validated collection card (81%). Stata v.16 software was used for the analysis, using chi-square and Mann Whitney U. Results: 17.2% of the cell phones had growth of Gram-negative bacteria. The bivariate analysis with this variable found that sex, type of cell phone and the longest time of use during working hours were statistically associated (p< 0.05). Conclusions: The female gender, having a cell phone with a keyboard and the highest frequency of use are variables associated with the colonization of gram-negative germs in cell phones of vendors in the Huanuco, Peru market.

13. Prevalence of risk factors for carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in hospitalized patients. Systematic review

Abstract: Introduction. The cases of infection for Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) have increased. The patients with infection for Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumonia have a terrible forecast and a high mortality rate. Objective. We determine the prevalence of risk factors in patients hospitalized for CRKP. Methods. We perform a search bibliographic of the literature in Pub Med, MEDLINE, and SCOPUS, to December 13, 2021. This systematic review included observational studies on risk factors in patients hospitalized for CRKP. We evaluated the quality methodologic of articles on the base of the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) of nine stars. Results. we observed that the majority were male (62.90%), the average age was 61 years, and 883 patients with CRKP were counted from the different studies. The main risk factors for CRKP were previous hospitalizations (67.9%), previous use of carbapenems and ß-lactam/ß-lactamase inhibitor (49.59% and 45.49%, respectively), previous venous catheterization (44.99%) and previous stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) (42.9%). Conclusions. In this systematic review, we was the conclusion that the prevalence of risk factors of CRKP in patients hospitalized are previous hospitalizations, use last of antibiotics as carbapenems, ß-lactams/inhibitors, ß-lactamase, previous procedures as central venous catheterization and earlier stays in intensive care units (ICU). These findings can promote the prevention of CRKP infections and rational control over the use of antibiotics from the Ministry of Health towards the general population.

Abstract: El tratamiento de infecciones por bacterias resistentes a determinados grupos farmacológicos resulta un tema de alto interés para la ciencia. Así, la investigación tuvo el propósito de sistematizar la información acerca de la eficacia de los aminoglicósidos en pacientes infectados por Klebsiella pneumoniae resiste a carbapenémicos; para lo que se hizo una revisión sistemática siguiendo el protocolo PRISMA. Las fuentes se ubicaron a partir de una pesquisa se hizo en las bases de datos: PubMed, MEDLINE y SCOPUS; quedando seleccionados 11 artículos que cumplieron con los requisitos establecidos. Se observó un predominio de los artículos provenientes de los Estados Unidos de América (4/11) y Brasil (3/11). La población global fue de 3778 pacientes entre las 11 investigaciones incluidas. El uso de aminoglicósidos resultó más eficaz que otros grupos farmacológicos en la mejoría en el estado clínico, reflejando menores valores de mortalidad en pacientes hospitalizados por la infección en cuestión.

Abstract: Understanding global biodiversity change, its drivers, and the ecosystem consequences requires a better appreciation of both the factors that shape soil macrofauna communities and the ecosystem effects of these organisms. The project “sOilFauna” was funded by the synthesis center sDiv (Germany) to address this major gap by forming a community of soil ecologists, identifying the most pressing research questions and hypotheses, as well as conducting a series of workshops to foster the global synthesis and hypothesis testing of soil macrofauna. The overarching goal is to analyze the most comprehensive soil macrofauna database - the MACROFAUNA database - which collates abundance data of 17 soil invertebrate groups assessed with a standardized method at 7180 sites around the world, and seeks to foster the collection of future data. In a recent kick-off workshop in May 2022, the first research priorities and collaboration guidelines were determined. Here, we summarize the main outcomes of this workshop and highlight the benefits of creating an open global community of soil ecologists providing standardized soil macrofauna data for future research, evaluation of ecosystem health, and nature protection.

16. Bacteriophages Isolated From Turkeys Infecting Diverse Salmonella Serovars

Abstract: Salmonella is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses worldwide. The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella strains has increased global concern for salmonellosis. Recent studies have shown that bacteriophages (phages) are novel and the most promising antibacterial agents for biocontrol in foods because phages specifically kill target bacteria without affecting other bacteria, do not alter organoleptic properties or nutritional quality of foods, and are safe and environmentally friendly. Due to the vast variation in Salmonella serotypes, large numbers of different and highly virulent Salmonella phages with broad host ranges are needed. This study isolated 14 Salmonella phages from turkey fecal and cecal samples. Six phages (Φ205, Φ206, Φ207, ΦEnt, ΦMont, and Φ13314) were selected for characterization. These phages were from all three families in the Caudovirales order. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed that each phage had a unique structural protein profile. Each phage had a distinct host range. Φ207 and ΦEnt are both siphophages. They shared eight hosts, including seven different Salmonella serovars and one Shigella sonnei strain. These two phages showed different restriction banding patterns generated through EcoRI or HindIII digestion, but shared three bands from EcoRI digestion. ΦEnt displayed the broadest and very unusual host range infecting 11 Salmonella strains from nine serovars and three Shigella strains from two species, and thus was further characterized. The one-step growth curve revealed that ΦEnt had a short latent period (10 min) and relatively large burst size (100 PFU/infected cell). ΦEnt and its host showed better thermal stabilities in tryptic soy broth than in saline at 63 or 72°C. In the model food system (cucumber juice or beef broth), ΦEnt infection [regardless of the multiplicity of infections (MOIs) of 1, 10, and 100] resulted in more than 5-log10 reduction in Salmonella concentration within 4 or 5 h. Such high lytic activity combined with its remarkably broad and unusual host range and good thermal stability suggested that ΦEnt is a novel Salmonella phage with great potential to be used as an effective biocontrol agent against diverse Salmonella serovars in foods.

17. Stakeholder collaboration and irrigation practices in Ghana: issues, challenges, and the way forward

Abstract: Abstract In the era of climate change, irrigation is playing a pivotal role in stabilising food production, enabling dry season farming, and improving farmers’ livelihoods, particularly in Asia and African countries. Recently, Ghana has taken steps to respond to the concept of stakeholder collaboration to improve the irrigated agricultural sub-sector as well as enhance farmers’ resilience to changing climate. However, there is limited attention to recent diverging experiences on collaborative practices from irrigation stakeholders. Using the Weija Irrigation Scheme as a case study, this study explores stakeholders’ perceptions of collaborative practices in irrigation management by identifying gaps and providing suggestions to enhance stakeholder collaboration. We conducted focus group discussions with farmers and in-depth interviews with key informants, such as heads of farmer groups, government departments, agencies, and agricultural extension agents. Secondary data from conventional literature, organisational websites, and quarterly reports were also used. Following the integrated collaboration governance theory, effective collaboration was measured based on the tripartite prism of “principled engagement, shared motivation, and capacity for joint action”. Analysis of the data reveals that despite the central government’s resolve for collaborative irrigation planning and management, effective collaboration remains limited. Based on principle engagement, this study points out that weak communication and sharing of information remain in the planning and management of the Weija Irrigation Scheme. In terms of shared motivation, there were minimal commitment to joint project planning, exclusion of some key stakeholders from meetings, and negative attitudes towards collaboration. Finally, the capacity for joint action (e.g. lack of fund, time, staff, and equipment) is limited. The policy implications and suggestions for further research are presented in the study.

18. Lower methane emissions were associated with higher abundance of ruminal Prevotella in a cohort of Colombian buffalos

Abstract: Abstract Background Ruminants burp massive amounts of methane into the atmosphere and significantly contribute to the deposition of greenhouse gases and the consequent global warming. It is therefore urgent to devise strategies to mitigate ruminant’s methane emissions to alleviate climate change. Ruminal methanogenesis is accomplished by a series of methanogen archaea in the phylum Euryarchaeota, which piggyback into carbohydrate fermentation by utilizing residual hydrogen to produce methane. Abundance of methanogens, therefore, is expected to affect methane production. Furthermore, availability of hydrogen produced by cellulolytic bacteria acting upstream of methanogens is a rate-limiting factor for methane production. The aim of our study was to identify microbes associated with the production of methane which would constitute the basis for the design of mitigation strategies. Results Moderate differences in the abundance of methanogens were observed between groups. In addition, we present three lines of evidence suggesting an apparent higher abundance of a consortium of Prevotella species in animals with lower methane emissions. First, taxonomic classification revealed increased abundance of at least 29 species of Prevotella. Second, metagenome assembly identified increased abundance of Prevotella ruminicola and another species of Prevotella. Third, metabolic profiling of predicted proteins uncovered 25 enzymes with homology to Prevotella proteins more abundant in the low methane emissions group. Conclusions We propose that higher abundance of ruminal Prevotella increases the production of propionic acid and, in doing so, reduces the amount of hydrogen available for methanogenesis. However, further experimentation is required to ascertain the role of Prevotella on methane production and its potential to act as a methane production mitigator.

Abstract: Objetivo: Determinar los beneficios de los inhibidores del SGLT-2 en pacientes con insuficiencia cardiaca y fracción de eyección reducida con o sin diabetes. Métodos: En esta revisión sistemática se incluyeron estudios experimentales, estudios de los inhibidores de SGLT-2 en pacientes con insuficiencia cardiaca con fracción de eyección reducida con o sin diabetes. Se realizo una síntesis narrativa formal de los datos recogidos en español e inglés. Las síntesis se centraron en el análisis cualitativo. La calidad de evidencia para cada desenlace se determinó según la metodología Grading of Recommendations Assessmet, Developmet and Evaluation (GRADE). Resultados: En lo general, los eventos primarios en los pacientes con insuficiencia cardiaca con fracción de eyección reducida del grupo de los inhibidores de SGLT-2 fueron menores respecto al grupo placebo (IR:0.65; IC del 95%: 0.64-0.80; p=0.40). Los resultados por muerte cardiovascular en el grupo de los inhibidores del SGLT-2 fueron menores respecto al grupo placebo (IR: 0.60; IC del 95%: 0.40-0.70; p=0.50). Los resultados adversos en los pacientes del grupo de los inhibidores del SGLT-2 fueron menores que el grupo placebo (37% vs 42%, respectivamente) de los diversos estudios. Conclusión: Los inhibidores del SGLT-2 mejoran las alteraciones cardiovasculares, incluida la insuficiencia cardiaca con fracción de eyección reducida y preservada, además reducen la moralidad cardiovascular en pacientes con o sin diabetes.

20. Efectos de la vitamina D sérico y suplemento en pacientes infectados por la COVID-19

Abstract: Antecedentes: La enfermedad del COVID-19 provocado por el nuevo síndrome respiratorio agudo severo coronavirus 2, que apareció a finales del año 2019 en la provincia de Hubei, región de Wuhan de la República Popular de China. Objetivo: Determinar los efectos de la vitamina D sérico y suplemento en pacientes infectados por la COVID-19. Métodos: En esta revisión sistémica se incluyeron estudios experimentales y observacionales; estudios sobre los efectos de la vitamina D sérico y suplemento en pacientes con COVID-19; estudios con texto disponible y se incluyeron estudios en el idioma inglés y español. Se realizó una síntesis narrativa formal de los datos recogidos, no se realizó una síntesis estadístico formal. Se evaluó la calidad metodológica de los artículos utilizando las herramientas de evaluación de la calidad del Instituto Nacional del Corazón, los Pulmones y la Sangre (NHLBI). Resultados: La seropositividad en los pacientes con el SARS-CoV-2 no se asocio con la deficiencia de la vitamina D3 (OR=0.99; IC 95%=0.85-1.16). La diferencia entre el grupo de vitamina D3 y el grupo de placebo no fue significativa para la mortalidad hospitalaria (7.6% frente a 5.1%; [IC 95%= -4.1% a 9.2%]. El ingreso a la unidad de cuidados intensivos (16.0% vs 21.2%; [IC 95%= -15.1% a 4.7%]; respectivamente. Conclusión: La deficiencia de vitamina D provoca el aumento en la hospitalización y la gravedad en los pacientes infectados por COVID-19. Además, la administración de vitamina D al parecer no produce eventos beneficiosos o adversos. Se necesitan más ensayos aleatorios clínicos.

Abstract: Introducción: A finales de 2019, surgió el brote de un nuevo coronavirus que desencadenó el síndrome respiratorio agudo severo coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), originado en la provincia de Hubei, ciudad de Wuhan, República Popular de China, provocando una pandemia global y una amenaza para la salud pública. Objetivo : Esta revisión sistemática tiene como objetivo determinar los efectos de la azitromicina, hidroxicloroquina e ivermectina en pacientes ambulatorios y hospitalizados con covid-19. Métodos: Realizamos una búsqueda bibliográfica en Pub Med / MEDLINE hasta el 4 de junio de 2021, las estrategias de búsqueda se evaluaron utilizando el programa Manual Cochrane de revisiones sistemáticas. Se utilizó el programa Mendeley para gestionar las referencias bibliográficas. Resultados:En la búsqueda inicial se registraron 832 estudios, de los cuales se incluyeron 17 publicaciones. Además, incluimos un artículo secundario de la búsqueda adicional de los 17 artículos. La azitromicina y / o hidroxicloroquina aumentan la mortalidad y provocan eventos adversos en comparación con los grupos de atención habitual (27% vs 25%, OR = 0,98, IC 95% = 0,58-1,74, p = 1,00) e ivermectina con respecto al grupo control en la resolución de síntomas (82% vs 79%) y eventos adversos (52% vs 56%), de varios estudios. Conclusiones: la calidad de la evidencia sobre la efectividad y ventajas de la azitromicina, hidroxicloroquina e ivermectina en el tratamiento del COVID-19 en pacientes ambulatorios y hospitalizados es baja.

Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 disease caused by the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which appeared at the end of 2019 in Hubei Province, Wuhan Region of the People's Republic of China. Objective: To determine radiological and functional pulmonary complications in patients recovered from COVID-19. Methods: We included observational studies, studies of radiological and functional pulmonary complications related to COVID-19 in patients discharged from hospital, studies of available text and studies in English and Spanish. A formal narrative synthesis of the collected data was carried out; no formal statistical synthesis was carried out. The synthesis focused on qualitative analysis. The methodological quality of the articles was assessed using the quality assessment tools of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Results: In this systematic review it was observed that the functional pulmonary complications that the patients manifested were: 45.05 % of impaired diffusion capacity (DLCO), 30.1 % of restrictive pattern (FEV1) and 20.4 % of obstructive pattern (FEV1/FVC). Radiological complications were: 59.7% ground-glass opacity (GGO), 18.75% consolidation, 9.3% bronchiectasis, 6% thickening of the underlying pleura, 3.9% thickening of the interlobular septum, 3.83% crazy-paving and 0.96% pleural effusion. Conclusion: This review concludes that post-COVID-19 infection patients showed impaired lung and radiological functions, with DLCO and GGO being the most important.

Abstract: Antecedentes: La enfermedad del COVID-19 causado por el virus, SARS-CoV-2, comenzó en la región de Wuhan de la República Popular de China, a finales del 2019, generando complicaciones y mortalidad en pacientes hospitalizados. Objetivo: Revisar la literatura de manera sistemática sobre las complicaciones cardiovasculares de la COVID-19 en pacientes hospitalizados. Métodos: Se incluyeron estudios observacionales, estudios sobre complicaciones cardiovasculares en pacientes hospitalizados por COVID-19, estudios con textos disponibles y estudios en idioma inglés y español. Se realizó una síntesis narrativa de los datos recopilados, sin un análisis formal estadístico. Además, de análisis cualitativo de las principales patologías y manifestaciones clínicas notificadas. Se empleo la herramienta de la calidad del estudio de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de los Estados Unidos. Resultados: En esta revisión se observó que el 50.6 % de los pacientes infectados por el SARS-CoV-2, padecieron alguna comorbilidad cardiovascular (43.5 % hipertensión arterial (HTA) y 19.8 % diabetes mellitus). Las complicaciones del COVID-19 en pacientes infectados fueron: (44.1 %) tromboembolismo venoso, (32 %) infarto agudo de miocardio (IMA), (19.2 %) miocarditis, (16.3 %) arritmia y (11.2 %) enfermedad cerebrovascular. Conclusión: Los principales efectos cardiovasculares en pacientes infectados por el SARS-COV-2 fueron miocarditis, infarto agudo de miocardio (IAM), tromboembolismo venoso, enfermedad cerebro vascular (ECV).

25. An indirect heating solution to reduce CO2 emission and improve efficiency of gas distribution networks

Abstract: The gas industry relies on indirect heating to prevent gas from freezing when it is transferred from high-pressure networks to lower pressure distribution systems. The main challenge in preheating natural gas is designing an indirect heating system capable of consistently maintaining a target temperature, despite large load diversity. The most common form of heating technology has traditionally been water bath heaters and boiler houses. In this paper, a novel technology is introduced, and its performance compared to existing installations. The Immersion Tube Thermosyphon Heater was developed specifically to address high load diversity; it combines a high-efficiency immersion burner with a sub-atmospheric two-phase loop thermosyphon. The use of low-temperature steam provides a flexible and precise solution for temperature control easily adapted to variable gas flows. The Immersion Tube Thermosyphon achieved an average thermal efficiency of 90%, considerably higher than the 46% efficient water bath, allowing an estimated annual saving of 7,660 tonnes CO2 for 1-megawatt gross heat capacity operating with a 50% load factor. Abstract: Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, there is a lack of data available about SSI in children worldwide, especially from low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of SSI in children and associations between SSI and morbidity across human development settings.Methods A multicentre, international, prospective, validated cohort study of children aged under 16 years undergoing clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty gastrointestinal surgery. Any hospital in the world providing paediatric surgery was eligible to contribute data between January and July 2016. The primary outcome was the incidence of SSI by 30 days. Relationships between explanatory variables and SSI were examined using multilevel logistic regression. Countries were stratified into high development, middle development and low development groups using the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI).Results Of 1159 children across 181 hospitals in 51 countries, 523 (45·1%) children were from high HDI, 397 (34·2%) from middle HDI and 239 (20·6%) from low HDI countries. The 30-day SSI rate was 6.3% (33/523) in high HDI, 12·8% (51/397) in middle HDI and 24·7% (59/239) in low HDI countries. SSI was associated with higher incidence of 30-day mortality, intervention, organ-space infection and other HAIs, with the highest rates seen in low HDI countries. Median length of stay in patients who had an SSI was longer (7.0 days), compared with 3.0 days in patients who did not have an SSI. Use of laparoscopy was associated with significantly lower SSI rates, even after accounting for HDI.Conclusion The odds of SSI in children is nearly four times greater in low HDI compared with high HDI countries. Policies to reduce SSI should be prioritised as part of the wider global agenda.

La base de datos utilizada en esta investigación es el Censo Nacional Agropecuario 2014, desarrollado y suministrado por el Departamento Nacional de Estadística (DANE). El método de estimación econométrica utilizado es el modelo probit. Se observa que cada departamento posee diferencias en los factores que afectan a la membresía. Por último, se concluye que la asociación productiva es una manera en la que el productor puede obtener financiamiento, insumos, información y poder de negociación.

Abstract: La literatura empírica presenta diversos resultados acerca del impacto que tiene el gasto público sobre el producto interno bruto (PIB) de los países en general. Este artículo presenta evidencia sobre el impacto que tiene dicho gasto sobre el PIB en 24 departamentos de Colombia, durante el periodo 1984-2012. Además, se aplica una prueba de causalidad con datos de panel con el fin de determinar si la relación se sustenta mediante el enfoque keynesiano o el enfoque wagneriano. A través de un modelo de datos de panel cointegrado, se obtiene esta relación y se estiman los coeficientes de la relación de equilibrio de largo plazo. Los resultados muestran un efecto positivo y significativo del gasto público primario sobre el PIB, lo cual va en la vía del enfoque keynesiano y confirma la hipótesis de que aumentos en el gasto público contribuyen al crecimiento económico.

30. Association between migration and physical activity among medical students from a university located in Lima, Peru.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the association between migration and physical activity among medical students from a university located in Lima, Peru. METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted among second-year medical students from a Peruvian university. Data on moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and migration features were obtained through a self-report questionnaire. To assess the associations of interest, prevalence ratios (PR) along with their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated using Poisson regression with robust variances. RESULTS:We analyzed data from 312 students (54.5% were women, mean age: 19.0 years, standard deviation: 1.4 years), 90 (28.9%) students performed MVPA for ≥150 minutes/week, 118 (37.8%) performed MVPA for ≤30 minutes/week, and 114 (36.7%) were migrants. Being a migrant was not associated with performing MVPA for ≤30 nor ≥150 minutes/week. However, adjusted analysis showed that the frequency of performing MVPA for ≤30 minutes/week was greater among those who migrated less than five years ago (PR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.05-1.93) and among those who migrated to continue their studies (PR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.06-1.94), compared to non-migrants. CONCLUSION:In our population, being a migrant was not associated with physical activity. However, low physical activity was more prevalent among recent migrants and among those who had migrated to study, compared to non-migrants.

Abstract: The regular inspection of the crane tracks of storage cranes at the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), Hamburg requires high accuracy of measurements to determine its position. The allowed tolerances are in the range of 10 mm in the XY plane on a track length of 300 m. The traditional semi-automatic surveying methods are slow and require the interruption of the activities in the storage blocks. The research project AeroInspekt proposed a fully automatic measurement of the position of the tracks using UAV-based photogrammetry. In this paper, the results of the test campaign, carried out in June 2020, were presented where different cameras (150 mm and 80 mm telelens) and flight speeds (1.1 m/s and 1.9 m/s) at a 35 m flying height were performed. Furthermore, an automated rail delineation in the derived surface model was developed and evaluated with ground reference measurements. The results show that the required accuracy of the rail position with an RMSE of 3 mm in XY plane and 8 mm in altitude can be achieved with comparatively less disruption of regular block activities.

32. Adaptation to Climate Change Effects on Water Resources: Understanding Institutional Barriers in Nigeria

Abstract: Climate Change (CC) and variability are global issues that the world has been facing for a long time. Given the recent catastrophic events, such as flooding, erosion, and drought in Nigeria, many have questioned institutions’ capacity in managing CC impacts in Nigeria. This study explores emerging institutional barriers of adaptation to CC effects on water resources in Nigeria. The study data were obtained from in-depth interviews with institutional heads from water resources management and emergency management and a review of secondary literature from databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. The results show that inadequate hydrological data management, low awareness on how to adapt among the public and decision-makers, financial constraints, no political will to pass important bills into law, and inadequate institutional and legal framework are the main institutional barriers of adaptation to climate change in Nigeria. The study concludes that it is essential to strengthen the institutional and legal system, information management mechanism, public awareness, and participatory water resources management. The implications for further research are presented in the study.

Immediately after the collection was completed, the SP and sperm from the males selected were separated by centrifugation to combine the two types of plasma with the two types of sperm, incubate them for three hours and then freeze them. Abstract: For antiviral drug design, especially in the field of influenza virus research, potent multivalent inhibitors raise high expectations for combating epidemics and pandemics. Among a large variety of covalent and non-covalent scaffold systems for a multivalent display of inhibitors, we created a simple supramolecular platform to enhance the antiviral effect of our recently developed antiviral Peptide B (PeBGF), preventing binding of influenza virus to the host cell. By conjugating the peptide with stearic acid to create a higher-order structure with a multivalent display, we could significantly enhance the inhibitory effect against the serotypes of both human pathogenic influenza virus A/Aichi/2/1968 H3N2, and avian pathogenic A/FPV/Rostock/34 H7N1 in the hemagglutination inhibition assay. Further, the inhibitory potential of stearylated PeBGF (C18-PeBGF) was investigated by infection inhibition assays, in which we achieved low micromolar inhibition constants against both viral strains. In addition, we compared C18-PeBGF to other published amphiphilic peptide inhibitors, such as the stearylated sugar receptor mimicking peptide (Matsubara et al. 2010), and the “Entry Blocker” (EB) (Jones et al. 2006), with respect to their antiviral activity against infection by Influenza A Virus (IAV) H3N2. However, while this strategy seems at a first glance promising, the native situation is quite different from our experimental model settings. First, we found a strong potential of those peptides to form large amyloid-like supramolecular assemblies. Second, in vivo, the large excess of cell surface membranes provides an unspecific target for the stearylated peptides. We show that acylated peptides insert into the lipid phase of such membranes. Eventually, our study reveals serious limitations of this type of self-assembling IAV inhibitors.

Abstract: El idioma inglés se ha convertido en la lengua importante de la sociedad del conocimiento en que se desarrolla el ser humano actual. Para adquirirlo, cada día miles se matriculan e inician el sueño de poder comunicarse en esta lengua. Sin embargo, un número bastante similar abandonan las aulas, frustrados por no poder alcanzar la meta. ¿Cuáles son los factores que llevan a tantos estudiantes a tomar esta determinación? Independientemente de las razones, el aprender inglés como idioma extranjero es algo que muy pocos logran. El siguiente artículo científico tuvo como objetivo determinar los aspectos de la competencia comunicativa que mejoraron los estudiantes al interactuar semanalmente con angloparlantes. Para ello, se seleccionó un grupo de once estudiantes de la carrera de inglés como lengua extranjera de la Universidad Técnica Nacional en Costa Rica. Los resultados que se obtuvieron fueron muy interesantes ya que la pronunciación es la macro habilidad del inglés que más se les dificulta a los estudiantes y es justamente este aspecto el más beneficiado con las sesiones de conversación. Al final, se concluyó que la colaboración de un voluntario angloparlante en el aula es un asunto fácil, divertido, dinámico, innovador, diferente y muy sencillo de lograr.

Abstract: El tratamiento médico de la cirrosis es de carácter paliativo, siendo el trasplante de hígado la única opción de curación a largo plazo, aunque poco disponible. No se ha establecido un régimen terapéutico eficaz que permita evitar la progresión a cirrosis. Se evaluó el efecto del citrato de sildenafil (CS) en la fibrogénesis de ratas Wistar con daño hepático, inducido con tetracloruro de carbono (CCL4). El proyecto fue avalado por el comité de ética para la experimentación con animales de la Universidad de Caldas. Se distribuyeron siete tratamientos: Control (sin medicamentos); control CCL4; CS 10mg/kg; CS 25mg/kg; CS 50mg/kg; CCL4 + CS 10mg/kg; CCL4 + CS 25mg/kg; CCL4 + CS 50mg/kg. El CCL4, se administró dos veces por semana vía subcutánea (SC), mientras que el CS, tres veces por semana, vía intraperitoneal (IP). Abstract: In 1945, Europe lay in ruins. Networks needed to be established, new alliances forged. UNESCO was a child of that time, and the idea of a united, democratic Europe took wing. During the period 1948–60, Modernism was at its height, and its shape was defined in a number of important exhibitions and publications. Herbert Read and others, with the support of the British Council, established an international presence for Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and the postwar generation of “the Geometry of Fear”. In doing so, they introduced a particularly “English” flavour to the debates about European moral and spiritual reconstruction. Britain pioneered new forms of public patronage and display. In West Germany, the new British sculpture was interpreted as an expression of Western, humanist values, though it also carried intimations of the threat of nuclear war and destruction. Moore’s moderate Modernism and social democratic credentials went down well with artists in communist countries, who were seeking to escape from the narrow prescriptions of socialist realism. Over time, the British Council helped to create, and support, the notion of a self-regenerating sculptural tradition that was carried over until the full impact of globalization began to be felt, towards the end of the 1990s.

38. Anti-Hemagglutinin Antibody Derived Lead Peptides for Inhibitors of Influenza Virus Binding.

Abstract: Antibodies against spike proteins of influenza are used as a tool for characterization of viruses and therapeutic approaches. However, development, production and quality control of antibodies is expensive and time consuming. To circumvent these difficulties, three peptides were derived from complementarity determining regions of an antibody heavy chain against influenza A spike glycoprotein. Their binding properties were studied experimentally, and by molecular dynamics simulations. Two peptide candidates showed binding to influenza A/Aichi/2/68 H3N2. One of them, termed PeB, with the highest affinity prevented binding to and infection of target cells in the micromolar region without any cytotoxic effect. PeB matches best the conserved receptor binding site of hemagglutinin. PeB bound also to other medical relevant influenza strains, such as human-pathogenic A/California/7/2009 H1N1, and avian-pathogenic A/Mute Swan/Rostock/R901/2006 H7N1. Strategies to improve the affinity and to adapt specificity are discussed and exemplified by a double amino acid substituted peptide, obtained by substitutional analysis. The peptides and their derivatives are of great potential for drug development as well as biosensing.

Abstract: Este artículo presenta los resultados de un proyecto de investigaciónacadémica cuyo objetivo fue el desarrollo de una propuesta metodológica para Colombia dirigida a implementar el estado de ganancias/pérdidas por tenencia, con base en las recomendaciones que la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU), el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) y la Eurostat hacen a los países asociados, a fin de fortalecer sus técnicas de medición económica. Para ello, el documento presenta inicialmente el marco conceptual de la cuenta y luego la propuesta metodológica del modelo, ilustrada con ejemplos para facilitar su comprensión. En la tercera parte se exponen los resultados obtenidos de las ganancias/pérdidas por tenencia para el Gobierno nacional central, con el análisis básico dirigido a socializar los principales hallazgos e identificar las fortalezas de la metodología. Finalmente, se plantean las reflexiones y contribuciones que esta investigación ha generado, y se discute el camino que se debe seguir para lograr posicionar este instrumento como una de las estadísticas macroeconómicas más relevantes del país.

41. Biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani in native potato (Solanum phureja) plants using native Pseudomonas fluorescens

Abstract: Rhizoctonia solani is a soil borne phytopathogen associated with reduced plant vigor and tuber production in potato crops. There is a huge interest to search alternatives of biological control management of this disease, because the potato crops in Colombia are the highest consumers of chemical pesticides in Colombia. In order to obtain a fluorescent Pseudomonas strain with the capacity to reduce the disease symptoms produced by R. solani, determination and isolation of the predominant fluorescent Pseudomonas in several potato crops of the main Colombian producing region was done in a previous study. Six different P. fluorescens strains with none, moderate and high fungal growth inhibition capacity in vitro, were used in this study. Despite of the differences found in the dynamics of colonization and colonization capacity, all evaluated strains induced S. phureja growth and reduced disease symptoms produced by R. solani. Our results support the conclusion that association of P. fluorescens strains with S. phureja rhizosphere is a feasible alternative for the management of R. solani symptoms.

Abstract: Different residual strenght profiles were measured by X-Ray diffraction in areas close to the sufrace of AISI-SAE 5160H steel used in making crossbow springs. Different shotblasting conditions were used and an experimental design was developed for finding process conditions offering suitable Almen intensity and residual strength profile when compression was applied. The combination of variables was chosen which tended to present the most suitable results within the parameters used in making springs in the same conditions, cycle them and determine their behaviour in fatigue tests.

43. Image-Based Multi-Target Tracking through Multi-Bernoulli Filtering with Interactive Likelihoods

Abstract: We develop an interactive likelihood (ILH) for sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods for image-based multiple target tracking applications. The purpose of the ILH is to improve tracking accuracy by reducing the need for data association. In addition, we integrate a recently developed deep neural network for pedestrian detection along with the ILH with a multi-Bernoulli filter. We evaluate the performance of the multi-Bernoulli filter with the ILH and the pedestrian detector in a number of publicly available datasets (2003 PETS INMOVE, Australian Rules Football League (AFL) and TUD-Stadtmitte) using standard, well-known multi-target tracking metrics (optimal sub-pattern assignment (OSPA) and classification of events, activities and relationships for multi-object trackers (CLEAR MOT)). In all datasets, the ILH term increases the tracking accuracy of the multi-Bernoulli filter.

Abstract: We are analysing the initial molecular events stimulated by the high-affinity receptor for IgE, FcεRI. Earlier studies have shown that the first response when the receptor-bound IgE interacts with a multivalent antigen is a transphosphorylation of receptor tyrosines, induced by the approximation of two or more receptors by a constitutively associated src-family kinase (Lyn). The amount of weakly associated kinase regulates the intensity of the response. Several aspects are being analyzed: (i) the sites on Lyn and the receptor that account for the constitutive interaction; (ii) how the intrinsic affinity of a ligand for the receptor-bound IgE influences the responses; and (iii) the mechanism(s) by which low-affinity ligands can act as antagonists. In the latter studies, mast cell responses were followed by monitoring the phosphorylation of tyrosines on several proteins and secretion. At equivalent levels of receptor phosphorylation, a ligand with high affinity stimulated vigorous phosphorylation of downstream components, whereas a low-affinity ligand was unable to stimulate phosphorylation of the same components effectively. Cells stimulated with a mixture of high- and low-affinity ligands, under a protocol where simple displacement of one by the other was prevented, remarkably showed that excess low-affinity ligand inhibited the phosphorylation as well as degranulation by the high-affinity ligand. This antagonism results from a competition for the limiting amount of the constitutive initiating kinase. Related receptors that depend on recruitment of initiating kinases may be subject to similar regulatory mechanisms.

46. Relación entre condición corporal y espesor de grasa de cadera en vacas cebú en diferentes estados reproductivos.

Abstract: El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la relación entre el peso corporal (PC), la condición corporal (CC) y el espesor de grasa de cadera (EGC) medido por ecografía y evaluar la relación entre CC y EGC en vacas vacías y preñadas. En noventa y dos vacas Cebú comercial (Brahman) se evalúo el PC, la CC y el EGC en diferentes estados reproductivos: 1) vacías, 2) primer tercio de gestación, 3) segundo tercio de gestación y 4) tercer tercio de gestación. El valor de CC fue asignado a cada vaca en una escala de 1 a 5 puntos. Las imágenes ecográficas para la medición del EGC fueron obtenidas utilizando un transductor lineal de 3,5 MHz. La CC, el PC y las medidas ecográficas fueron tomadas el mismo día. La relación entre los valores de CC, PC y EGC fue determinada mediante correlaciones y modelos de regresión usando el programa SAS. La CC fue relativamente aceptable para predecir el EGC (R2 = 0,69; P < 0,01), pero solo para las vacas Cebú no preñadas. De manera similar, la CC estuvo correlacionada (r = 0,77; P < 0,01) con el EGC en las vacas no preñadas. Además, la CC presentó una correlación intermedia (r = 0,45 a 0,69; P < 0,05) con el EGC en vacas preñadas. Igualmente, tanto la CC como el EGC mostraron una correlación intermedia (r = 0,36 a 0,48; P < 0,05) con el PC en las vacas preñadas. La clasificación de la CC puede ser usada para predecir el EGC en vacas Cebú no preñadas.

48. Evaluación de cuatro protocolos de sincronización para inseminación a tiempo fijo en vacas Bos indicus lactantes

Abstract: El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar cuatro protocolos de sincronización para inseminación artificial a tiempo fijo (IATF) en vacas Bos indicus lactantes. Se seleccionaron 120 vacas Brahman entre 45 y 120 días postparto y fueron ubicadas aleatoriamente en uno de cuatro tratamientos. El tratamiento Crestar consistió en un implante auricular de norgestomet y una inyección de norgestomet y valerato de estradiol, el día 9 se retiró el implante y se aplicó eCG; la IATF se realizó 48-52 horas después. El tratamiento GPG consistió en una inyección de gonadorelina, el día 7 una inyección de D-cloprostenol y el día 9 una segunda inyección de gonadorelina e IATF 18-22 horas después. El tratamiento GPE fue similar al tratamiento GPG, excepto que la segunda dosis de GnRH fue reemplazada por benzoato de estradiol (BE) el día 8 e IATF 30-32 horas después. El tratamiento CIDR-B consistió en la aplicación del dispositivo intravaginal más una inyección de BE y otra de progesterona, 7 días después se retiró el dispositivo y se aplicó D-cloprostenol, el día 8 una inyección de BE y la IATF 30-32 horas después. El diagnostico de preñez fue determinado mediante ultrasonografia transrectal 35 días después de la IATF. El tratamiento Crestar tuvo una tasa de preñez superior (P menor 0,01) a los demás tratamientos (55,7% versus 19,4%, 22,5% y 21,8%, respectivamente). Los resultados del presente estudio indican que es posible obtener tasas de preñez aceptables con la IATF en vacas B. indicus lactantes y que los tratamientos con dispositivos de liberación de progesterona más eCG pueden mejorar el desempeño reproductivo de las vacas.

Se evaluó el efecto de procedencia (efecto bloque) y grupo etáreo sobre: PGC, integridad acrosomal, funcionalidad de membrana, proporción de espermatozoides vivos y con gotas citoplásmicas (GC). Además se evaluó el efecto de PGC sobre la integridad acrosomal y la funcionalidad de membrana. 50. Manifestaciones oculares en VIH-SIDA: Análisis de 100 pacientes en el Hospital de San José

Abstract: Objetivo: establecer cuáles son las manifestaciones oculares (de los segmentos anterior y posterior) más comunes en pacientes con VIII-SIDA en el Hospital de San José y correlacionarlas con los marcadores de actividad de la enfermedad y los informes de la literatura mundial. Diseño: trabajo de investigación tipo descriptivo, prospectivo. Participantes: 100 pacientes pertenecientes al programa de VIII — SIDA del Servicio de Infectología del Hospital de San José. Principales medidas doctunentadas: examen externo, agudeza visual, examen de biomicroscopía (que incluye córnea y segmento anterior) y examen de fondo de ojo. Los hallazgos se registraron en una tabla diseñada para este fin. Resultados: de los 100 pacientes examinados se documentó uno con molusco contagioso, dos con orzuelos, seis con blefaritis, una úlcera corneana de características bacterianas, uno con queratitis estromal inespecífica, tres con retinopatía por VIII, un paciente con retinopatía por citomegalovirus (bilateral) y uno con cicatriz de retinocoroiditis por toxoplasmosis. Conclusiones: a diferencia de la literatura mundial, la retinitis por citomegalovirus no fue el hallazgo más común del segmento posterior en la población de nuestro hospital (solo 1% ), como sí lo fueron las manifestaciones de retinitis por VIH (exudados, envainamiento vascular, etc.). En cuanto al segmento anterior y la córnea, se observó una úlcera corneana de característica bacteriana, la cual no se ha consignado en la literatura mundial como hallazgo propio de la infección por VIH — SIDA, así como los orzuelos y blefaritis. Enfermedades como molusco contagioso y queratitis inespecífica están relacionadas en la bibliografía con esta enfermedad. No se encontró patología tumoral en la serie estudiada.
