- Abstract
Aim The first comprehensive checklist of European phytosociological alliances, orders and classes (EuroVegChecklist) was published by Mucina et al. (2016, Applied Vegetation Science, 19 (Suppl. 1), 3–264). However, this checklist did not contain detailed information on the distribution of individual vegetation types. Here we provide the first maps of all alliances in Europe. Location Europe, Greenland, Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Cyprus and the Caucasus countries. Methods We collected data on the occurrence of phytosociological alliances in European countries and regions from literature and vegetation-plot databases. We interpreted and complemented these data using the expert knowledge of an international team of vegetation scientists and matched all the previously reported alliance names and concepts with those of the EuroVegChecklist. We then mapped the occurrence of the EuroVegChecklist alliances in 82 territorial units corresponding to countries, large islands, archipelagos and peninsulas. We subdivided the mainland parts of large or biogeographically heterogeneous countries based on the European biogeographical regions. Specialized alliances of coastal habitats were mapped only for the coastal section of each territorial unit. Results Distribution maps were prepared for 1,105 alliances of vascular-plant dominated vegetation reported in the EuroVegChecklist. For each territorial unit, three levels of occurrence probability were plotted on the maps: (a) verified occurrence; (b) uncertain occurrence; and (c) absence. The maps of individual alliances were complemented by summary maps of the number of alliances and the alliance–area relationship. Distribution data are also provided in a spreadsheet. Conclusions The new map series represents the first attempt to characterize the distribution of all vegetation types at the alliance level across Europe. There are still many knowledge gaps, partly due to a lack of data for some regions and partly due to uncertainti

In the present article, the proposal of a new suballiance, Lavandulo luisieri-Cistenion albidi, is presented, constituted by chamaephytic and nanophanerophytic communities in eroded decarbonated soils derived from limestones (leptosols, chromicluvisols and cambisols) in the dry to lower hyperhumid, thermo-mesomediterranean bioclimatic levels. It is distributed throughout the western Iberian Peninsula in the Coastal Lusitan- Andalusian and Lusitan-Extremadurean biogeographical territories. It is positioned in the Ulici argentei-Cistion ladaniferi, Lavanduletalia stoechadis, Cisto-Lavanduletea. The new associations Anthyllido maurae-Ulicetum jussiaei, Sedo albi-Cistetum crispi and Thymetum congesti are also described. The multivariate analysis confirmed the segregation of this new suballiance, as well as the new associations., En este artículo, se presenta una nueva subalianza Lavandulo luisieri-Cistetum albidi, constituida por un conjunto de comunidades vegetales arbustivas (camafíticas y nanofanorofíticas) características de los suelos descarbonatados y erosionados, derivados de las calizas (leptosoles, luvisoles crómicos y cambisoles). - Abstract
Background High-quality data is crucial for guiding decision making and practicing evidence-based healthcare, especially if previous knowledge is lacking. Nevertheless, data quality frailties have been exposed worldwide during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on a major Portuguese surveillance dataset, our study aims to assess data quality issues and suggest possible solutions. Methods On April 27th 2020, the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health (DGS) made available a dataset (DGSApril) for researchers, upon request. On August 4th, an updated dataset (DGSAugust) was also obtained. The quality of data was assessed through analysis of data completeness and consistency between both datasets. Results DGSAugust has not followed the data format and variables as DGSApril and a significant number of missing data and inconsistencies were found (e.g. 4,075 cases from the DGSApril were apparently not included in DGSAugust). Several variables also showed a low degree of completeness and/or changed their values from one dataset to another (e.g. the variable ‘underlying conditions’ had more than half of cases showing different information between datasets). There were also significant inconsistencies between the number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 shown in DGSAugust and by the DGS reports publicly provided daily. Conclusions The low quality of COVID-19 surveillance datasets limits its usability to inform good decisions and perform useful research. Major improvements in surveillance datasets are therefore urgently needed - e.g. simplification of data entry processes, constant monitoring of data, and increased training and awareness of health care providers - as low data quality may lead to a deficient pandemic control.

Conducting Action and Design Research within organizations - with the objective of solving multidimensional problems, promoting effective change, developing useful artifacts, and generating actionable knowledge - involves the iterative application of a rigorous set of integrated processes. In a previous publication - based on empirical work, on a comprehensive literature review, and the practice of applying it to teach graduate students on qualitative research methods - a high-level conceptual model for Action & Design Research has been developed and published. It has identified - through the presentation of a tri-dimensional perspective, under the form of a cube - the essential processes and data components, emerging from the Organization Development, Engineering, and Science perspectives. Based on that high-level conceptual view, the objective of the current article is to detail a pragmatic approach to the main activities which are involved in the Action and Design Science Research approaches - under the form of high-level Process Meta-Models. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Developing Action and Design Research (ADR) interventions involves the application of a rigorous set of processes, and the production of explicit data to support the whole process, evidencing its base, intermediate, and final results. In a previous publication – based on empirical work, a comprehensive literature review, and the practice of its application teaching graduate students on qualitative research – a conceptual model for ADR has been developed. It has presented a tri-dimensional perspective, emergent from the Organization Development, Engineering and Science approaches, identifying its core processes and data. Based on that view, a high-level Process Meta-Model has been produced, detailing the main processes involved in ADR interventions and the associated data flows. Progressing within this structured line of research, the objective of this publication is to present a pragmatic approach to ADR main data structures – under the form of a high-level Data Model – evidencing the core data involved in the design, planning, development, and evaluation of this kind of initiatives. It includes the associated data structure diagram and the relevant details of the respective data components, which will act as researchers’ facilitators for documenting the whole process. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The construction of big dams usually cause a severe environmental change at a local level, producing a considerable visual impact that must be remedied and the disturbed area must be rehabilitated and recovered, approaching the landscape prior to the dam construction. In this work, several assays were tested, with the purpose of finding a treatment for fresh cut granite that could be used as a general rock treatment for visual impact of fresh excavated rocks. Some organic mixtures were tried, using autochthonous lichens and moss, as well as chemical treatments, like acid or paint. Granite blocks were selected and five different treatments were applied to cover the fresh granitic blocks and trigger their colonization and aging. The experiment has been established on two groups of blocks, one submitted to irrigation three times a week and the other without irrigation. Each treatment had two repetitions per group. Two blocks for control were also established in each group to interpret the gaps of variation in comparison to the treated blocks. All the stone blocks were maintained in a greenhouse, with controlled temperature and humidity. The monitoring of the treatment was done by taking pictures every 20 days, that were analyzed using RGB color characteristics and parameters that shows the evolution of pigmentation of the blocks. The results of this study show that three or at least two out of the five tested treatments are recommended to use in the disturbed areas. Irrigation can be more useful for the first two to three weeks after treatments info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersion

The synthesis and characterization of a new chlrocuprate(II), (C2H5)4N (sub 2)Cu5Cl12, is described. The complex was prepared by the reaction of CuCl2.2H2O and (C2H5)4NCl in 1,1,2-trichloroethane-ethanol followed by water-ethanol evaporation. X-diffraction analysis showed the crystal structure as a two-dimensional network of (Cu5Cl12)2- alternating with layers of tetraethylammonium cations. The anionic sheets are built up by aggregation of infinite zigzag chains of alternating tetra- and mononuclear subsequences.

- Abstract
Agricultural abandonment is a major driver of change in rural landscapes. Assumed to provide beneficial results to the environment and the conservation of biota, rural abandonment triggers landscape and biotic homogenization and loss of valuable species and habitats. This article focuses on the ecological effects and conservation challenges of shifts in extensive grazing regimes on marginal pastureland of Mediterranean mountains. We conceptualize a navigated socioecological transition toward conservation-oriented management after the collapse of historical land systems. The article provides examples from the LIFE+ project “Higro,” developed in mountainous protected areas in Portugal, of how management for conservation could sustain disturbance-dependent habitats. We argue that actively and regularly managing large habitat areas should be envisaged as a short-term approach to limit the immediate effects of rural abandonment. A gradual integration of conservation targets with other activities in changing rural economies is necessary to foster long-term conservation of species and habitats, building on the link between conservation-oriented habitat management and ecosystem services in rural landscapes. Conservation goals should run alongside recovery of social systems and innovation applied to traditional sources of income. This parallel development would contribute to building up social-ecological resilience by maintaining a diversity of social and ecological capital in rural areas. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

We present a bioclimatological diagnosis of mainland Portugal, namely the thermotype and ombrotype maps following Rivas-Martínez’s worldwide bioclimatic classi$cation system. In order to obtain this diagnosis, we produced maps of bioclimatological indices using, as base data, geostatistical interpolations of air temperature and precipitation. We performed uncertainty propagation obtaining uncertainty measures for the produced maps: mean absolute errors and root mean squared errors. For the non-linear indices, besides the usual approximation using Taylor expansion, we devised error formulae, for which we showed that the propagated uncertainties are upper bounds on the true uncertainty measures. We compared the obtained uncertainty measures to those reported on a previously published work, which used a different methodological framework to obtain the same diagnosis. Although the approach we used here implies a great number of interpolations and subsequent calculation steps, it permitted the use of a large amount of data relative to precipitation. An F-test showed that the estimated mean squared errors for the maps of ombrothermic indices were signi$cantly lower than those produced by the former methodological framework. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

- Abstract

In this work we propose a syntaxonomic scheme, according to the Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature for the vegetation of Portugal: continental and the Azores and Madeira archipelagos. The scheme encompasses 827 associations (4 communities), 245 alliances, 116 orders, and 64 vegetation classes. The 58 suballiances, 2 suborders and 4 subclasses, are also mentioned, as auxiliary ranks. For the higher syntaxa down to suballiance level, succinct ecological, physiognomic and chorological diagnosis has been made, and the characteristic species are related. New syntaxa names and corrections are described and listed in Annex I. It is also presented a floristic catalogue sheet with the syntaxonomic optimal for each taxon (Annex III). This list contains 2930 taxa.

fungi - Abstract
Regulated alternative polyadenylation is an important feature of gene expression, but how gene transcription rate affects this process remains to be investigated. polo is a cell-cycle gene that uses two poly(A) signals in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) to produce alternative messenger RNAs that differ in their 3'UTR length. Using a mutant Drosophila strain that has a lower transcriptional elongation rate, we show that transcription kinetics can determine alternative poly(A) site selection. The physiological consequences of incorrect polo poly(A) site choice are of vital importance; transgenic flies lacking the distal poly(A) signal cannot produce the longer transcript and die at the pupa stage due to a failure in the proliferation of the precursor cells of the abdomen, the histoblasts. This is due to the low translation efficiency of the shorter transcript produced by proximal poly(A) site usage. Our results show that correct polo poly(A) site selection functions to provide the correct levels of protein expression necessary for histoblast proliferation, and that the kinetics of RNA polymerase II have an important role in the mechanism of alternative polyadenylation.

Due to their complexity, vegetation phenomena are not understandable without a consistent conceptual framework. A few indispensable concepts to explore the northeastern Portuguese ultramafic vegetation are set out in Tables 9 and 10. Association. The Phytosociology fundamental abstract unit is the association or associatio. The concept of association comprises an ecological-taxonomic model of the reality. Therefore, the association includes the notion of a plant community (biological information: floristic, physiognomic etc.) that occupies a particular biotope (chorologic information) where a specific set of environmental conditions can be found, i.e. the habitat (environmental information). The taxonomic element is mainly supported on the floristic composition, which is characteristic and statistically constant between associations. The development of a hierarchical syntaxonomic system (synsystem) is based above all on floristic, but also on environmental, biogeographic and physiognomic characters. Although the association concept is not a true synonym of phytocoenosis the two terms are often used interchangeably, which may result abusive

Frequently climate is considered the first factor influencing flora, and consequently, vegetation distribution (Walter 1986; Woodward & B. G. Williams 1987; Capelo 2003; Peinado et al. 2007). Bioclimatology is the science that investigates the relationship between climate and the distribution of organisms. Rivas-Martínez’s Worldwide Bioclimatic Classification (RMWBC) has been developed by Rivas-Martínez with a number of approaches since 1982 (Rivas-Martínez 1996; 2008), with close reference to vegetation distribution, and is currently the most widely applied classification by Iberian phytosociologists, as well as from other Mediterranean countries. Based on the RMWBC, Monteiro-Henriques (2010) produced a set of bioclimatological maps for mainland Portugal (1960-1990) using the climatic statistical interpolations of Silva (2005) and Nicolau (2002) as base data. Using these bioclimatological maps of Monteiro-Henriques (2010) we present thermotype and ombrotype maps for mainland Portugal following the latest version of the RMWBC (Rivas-Martínez 2008), with particular focus on the Morais-Bragança area (Figure 5 and 6).

Florestas mesófilas ,Vegetação de Portugal - Abstract
The mesophilous woods dominated by Quercus faginea subsp. faginea or Acer monspessulanum thriving on neutral to alkaline deep clayish soils have been collected under the alliance Aceri granatensis-Quercion fagineae (Rivas Goday, Rigual & Rivas-Martínez in Rivas Goday, Borja, Esteve, Galiano, Rigual & Rivas-Martínez 1960) Rivas-Martínez 1987. Punctually, woods dominated by Q. faginea subsp. alpestris, Corylus avellana or Acer granatensis have also been ascribed to this alliance. In the Iberian Peninsula, these mesophilous woods are mainly found within the Western Mediterranean region, mainly in the eastern half of the Iberian Peninsula and occasionally in the Majorcan northern mountains, generally in mountainous areas under meso to supramediterranean, sub-humid to humid, euoceanic to semicontinental bioclimates (Rivas-Martínez et al. 2002). This alliance belongs to the Quercetalia pubescentis order from the Querco-Fagetea class, and was not represented in Portugal until the actual moment. We present two new associations, one dominated by Quercus faginea subsp. faginea and a second one dominated by Acer monspessulanum for the Portuguese territory. We analysed 188 Iberian vegetation relevés ascribed to the Aceri granatensis-Quercion fagineae alliance using a cluster analysis (both agglomerative and k-means clustering). The results were generally consistent with the phytosociological unit, but minor changes are proposed. A subsequent analysis of the indicator value (of Dufrêne & Legendre) of species is presented, highlighting the species with higher indicator values resulting statistically significant on the permutation test.

Rochas ultrabáscias ,Flora ,Vegetação - Abstract
The invaluable commented checklist of the vascular flora of the ultramafic rocks of northeastern Portugal of Pinto da Silva (1970) has been recently reviewed by Aguiar and Monteiro-Henriques (ined.). These authors’ accept 568 taxa, 29% of which (164 taxa) are new additions to the original catalogue of Pinto da Silva (1970). A subset of it with the most frequent and floristically relevant species is presented in Table 6. New additions have been highlighted with an asterisk (*). The most noticeable neophytes have been included and marked with an open rhombus (◊). A few synonyms have been added to facilitate the reading of the list of Pinto da Silva (1970). Familiar circumscription and higher taxa are according, respectively, to APG III (2009) and Chase & Reveal (2009). The main sources of infrafamiliar taxonomic information were the Flora Iberica (Castroviejo 1981+), Nova Flora de Portugal (Franco 1971; 1984; Franco & Rocha Afonso (1994; 1998), The Checklist of the Portuguese Vascular Flora (Sequeira et al. 2011) and, among others, the taxonomic revisions of Romero et al. (1988) (Agrostis), Díaz Lifante & Valdés (1996) (Asphodelus), La Guardia & Blanca (1987) (Scorzonera), Schippmann (1991) and Voght (1991) (Leucanthemum). We followed different taxonomic or nomenclatural criteria from Flora Iberica or Nova Flora de Portugal in Armeria langei subsp. marizii, Anthyllis sampaioana, A. vulneraria subsp. lusitanica, Alyssum serpyllifolium subsp. lusitanicum, Asplenium adiantum-nigrum subsp. corunnense, Carlina hispanica, Centaurea langei, Festuca elegans subsp. merinoi, Helianthemum apenninum subsp. rothmaleri, Tuberaria guttata and Trifolium striatum var. brevidens. The preparation of a checklist of ultramafic vascular flora is a difficult task. First of all, flora checklists are unfinished assignments because plants come and go with time. On the other hand, the northeastern Portugal ophiolites lithology is heterogeneous and complex. Peridotites, and similar ultramafic rocks, appear in stretched outcrops dispersed among macromorphologically similar basic rocks. The soils that have covered the ultramafic rocks many times catch materials from nearby mafic and leucocratic rocks. Finally, deep soils, rich in organic matter, derived from ultramafic rocks, usually have a similar flora to other nearby lithologies. The serpentine effect is in practice impossible to spatialize and quantify; consequently an ultramafic vascular flora checklist brings together plants of rather diverse ecology, and is by itself of limited scientific value.

GIS modelling ,Portugal ,phytosociology ,expert-knowledge ,natural potential vegetation - Abstract
An attempt to obtain a consistent spatial model of natural potential vegetation (NPV) for the mainland Portuguese territory is reported. Spatial modeling procedures performed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment, aimed to operationalize phytosociological expert-knowledge about the putative distribution of potential zona1 forest communities dominam in the Portuguese continental territories. The paradigm for NPV assumed was that of RIVAS-MARTINE(1Z9 76) and RIVAS-MARTINEeZt al. (1999), which presupposes, for a given territory, a univocal correspondence between a uniform combination of bioclimatic stage and lithology' gi ven a biogeographical context, and a unique successional sequence leading to a single climax community (i. e. a vegetation series (VS)). Information issued from both literature and a team of phytosociologists possessing detailed knowledge about Portuguese vegetation, namely about forests and its seria1 vegetation, was acknowledged as a starting point for the construction of such a habitat-vegetation correspondence model. First, a bioclimatic map concerning the "Worldwide Bioclimatic Classification System" (WBCS) of RIVAS-MARTINE(1Z9 81 -2004), obtained by multivariate grostatistical interpolation issuing from the work of MESQUITA(2 005), was set. Severa1 partia1 matrices, one for each biogeographical Province, combined such habitat statements to VS. Initial incoherence due to vagueness of statements led to an important amount of both superimposition of VS and habitat gaps in the matrices. Further rearrangement of the table according to known field distribution of VS by experts allowed setting an approximate univocal correspondence VS-habitat. Finally, an intersection of bioclimatic, lithology and biogeographic maps yielded over a thousand habitat combinations to be associated each to a single VS through implementation of the matrices as a set of rules. Again, inconsistencies were solved likewise, but this time by direct observation of the map by experts. Keeping of phytosociological consistency and fidelity to information on actual vegetation field distribution was always mandatory during the process

BIOCLIMATOLOGY , *AGRICULTURAL climatology , *CLIMATE change , *TEMPERATURE , *TAYLOR'S series - Abstract
We present a bioclimatological diagnosis of mainland Portugal, namely the thermotype and ombrotype maps following Rivas-Martínez's worldwide bioclimatic classification system. An F-test showed that the estimated mean squared errors for the maps of ombrothermic indices were significantly lower than those produced by the former methodological framework. CORROSION & anti-corrosives , *CHEMICAL inhibitors , *ELECTROLYSIS , *CHLORIDES , *ELECTRON microscopy - Abstract
An electrochemical study of prestressed steel in saturated Ca(OH)2 aqueous solutions (pH 12) was carried out in the absence and in the presence of chloride ions, in such a concentration that simulates the composition of seawater. Cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, open circuit potential transients, atomic absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled to electron diffraction spectroscopy were employed. The linear polarisation curves analysis led to the determination of polarisation resistance, Rp, corrosion potential, Ecorr, corrosion current density, jcorr , Tafel slopes, breakdown potential, Eb and repassivation potential Erepass. A linear dependence of the breakdown potential, Eb, on the square root of scan rate was obtained, according to the Point Defect Model (PDM). A crossover characteristic of the nucleation processes was observed in the presence of chloride ions. SEM/EDS studies revealed, as expected, a strong influence of the presence of chloride ions observed in the transpassive and the active regions. In conclusion, chloride ions contribute to enhance the corrosion of steel, most probably due to their adsorption on both the active and the passive electrode surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
