We present results of a multiwavelength study of the isolated dual AGN system Was 49. Observations show that the dominant component in this interacting system, Was 49a, is a spiral galaxy, while Was 49b is hosted in a dwarf galaxy located at 8 kpc from the nucleus of Was 49a, at the edge of its disk. The intriguing fact about this system is the luminosity of their corresponding AGNs. While Was 49a hosts a low luminosity Seyfert 2 with Lbol˜1043erg s–1, Was 49b has a Seyfert 2 with Lbol ˜ 1045erg s–1, in the luminosity range of Quasars. Furthermore, estimates of the black hole and host galaxy masses of Was 49b indicate a black hole significantly more massive than one would expect from scaling relations. This result is in contrast with findings that the most luminous merger-triggered AGNs are found in major mergers and that minor mergers predominantly enhance AGN activity in the primary galaxy.

Using simultaneous Very Long Baseline Array and Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-ray Telescope observations of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 2992 over a six-month observing campaign, we observed a large drop in core 5 cm radio luminosity, by a factor of $>3$, in tandem with factor of $>5$ increase in $2-10$ keV X-ray luminosity. While NGC 2992 has long been an important object for studies of X-ray variability, our study is the first simultaneous X-ray and radio variability campaign on this object. We observe that the X-ray spectral index does not change over the course of the flare, consistent with a change in the bulk amount of Comptonizing plasma, potentially due to a magnetic reconnection event in the accretion disk. The drop in apparent radio luminosity can be explained by a change in free-free absorption, which we calculate to correspond to an ionized region with physical extent and electron density consistent with the broad line region (BLR). Our results are consistent with magnetic reconnection events in the dynamic accretion disk creating outbursts of ionizing material, increasing Compton up-scattering of UV accretion disk photons and feeding material into the BLR. We present spatially resolved kinematics of ionized gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) and extended narrow-line region (ENLR) in a sample of nearby active galaxies. Utilizing long-slit spectroscopy from Apache Point Observatory (APO)13s ARC 3.5 m Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) we analyzed the strong λ5007 Å [O III] emission line profiles and mapped the radial velocity distribution of gas at increasing radii from the center. We identified the extents of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) driven outflows in our sample and determined the distances at which the observed gas kinematics is being dominated by the rotation of the host galaxy. We also measured the effectiveness of radiative driving of the ionized gas using mass distribution profiles calculated with two-dimensional modeling of surface brightness profiles in our targets. Finally, we compared our kinematic results of the outflow sizes with the maximum distances at which the gas is being radiatively driven to investigate whether these outflows are capable of disrupting or evacuating the star-forming gas at these distances.

We present the results of multi-wavelength optical observations, using B, V, R and I band filters, of a sample of 61 active geostationary communications satellites, on 2015 July 9–11. These observations were done outside the glinting season, with a longitudinal solar angle smaller than 6 ° and a latitudinal solar phase angle of ~ 16.5 ° . This approach enabled us to determine the distribution of quiescent magnitudes and colors of these targets during a period of the night when they are expected to be the brightest. We present the distribution of magnitudes and colors of the sample. We find that the colors of these satellites are in general redder than the Solar spectrum, with a wide distribution of values ( 0.62 B - V 1.49 , 1.00 B - R 2.28 , 1.31 B - I 3.07 , 0.34 V - R 0.90 , 0.63 V - I 1.69 , 0.27 R - I 0.79 ). Satellites from different manufacturers are found to cluster around specific colors in color-color plots, indicating that this information can be used to identify different satellites and resolve cross tagging issues. We also investigate whether the colors of satellites change with time and find that in most cases there is no significant change to these properties as the satellites age.

The detection and characterization of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in local low mass galaxies is crucial to our understanding of the origins of SMBHs. This statement assumes that low mass galaxies have had a relatively quiet cosmic history, so that their black holes have not undergone significant growth and therefore can be treated as relics of the original SMBH seeds. While recent studies have found optical signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in a growing population of dwarf galaxies, these studies are biased against low metallicity and relatively merger-free galaxies, thus missing precisely the demographic in which to search for the relics of SMBH seeds. Here, we report the detection of the [\ion{Si}{6}]1.963~$\mu$m coronal line (CL), a robust indicator of an AGN in the galaxy SDSS~J160135.95+311353.7, a nearby ($z=0.031$) low metallicity galaxy with a stellar mass approximately an order of magnitude lower than the LMC ($M_*\approx10^{8.56}$~M$_\odot$) and no optical evidence for an AGN. The AGN bolometric luminosity implied by the CL detection is $\approx10^{42}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, precisely what is predicted from its near-infrared continuum emission based on well-studied AGNs. Our results are consistent with a black hole of mass $\approx~10^5$~M$_\odot$, in line with expectations based on its stellar mass. This is the first time a near-infrared CL has been detected in a low mass, low metallicity galaxy with no optical evidence for AGN activity, providing confirmation of the utility of infrared CLs in finding AGNs in low mass galaxies when optical diagnostics fail. We explore the properties of ionized gas in the nuclear and circumnuclear environment of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 using spectroscopic and imaging observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Apache Point Observatory (APO)'s ARC 3.5m Telescope. We identify an unresolved moderate-density intermediate width component and a high-density broad component in the optical emission lines from the active nucleus, as well as spatially-resolved emission extending up to $\sim$1 kpc in the AGN ionized narrow-line region (NLR) and $\sim$8 kpc in the stellar ionized host galaxy. The HST narrow-band image reveals a distinct conical structure in [O III] emission towards the NE, and the ionized gas kinematics shows up to two blueshifted velocity components, indicating outflows along the edges of a cone. We introduce an improved model of biconical outflow, with our line of sight passing through the wall of the cone, which suggests that the large number of outflowing UV absorbers seen in NGC 4051 are NLR clouds in absorption. Using the de-projection factors from the biconical geometry, we measure true outflow velocities up to 680 km s$^{-1}$ at a distance of $\sim$350 pc, however, we do not find any rotational signature inside a projected distance $\leq$ 10'' ($\sim$800 pc) from the nucleus. We compare the gas kinematics with analytical models based on a radiation-gravity formalism, which show that most of the observed NLR outflows are launched within $\sim$0.5 pc of the nucleus and can travel up to $\sim$1 kpc from this low-luminosity AGN., 29 Pages, 16 Figures, 4 Tables. We present a dynamical study of the narrow-line regions in two nearby type 2 quasars (QSO2s). We construct dynamical models based on detailed photoionization models of the emission-line gas, including the effects of internal dust, to apply to observations of large-scale outflows from these active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We use Mrk 477 and Mrk 34 in order to test our models against recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of [O iii] emission-line kinematics, since these AGNs possess more energetic outflows than found in Seyfert galaxies. We find that the outflows within 500 pc are consistent with radiative acceleration of dusty gas, however the outflows in Mrk 34 are significantly more extended and may not be directly accelerated by radiation. We characterize the properties of X-ray winds found from the expansion of [O iii]-emitting gas close to the black hole. We show that such winds possess the kinetic energy density to disturb [O iii] gas at ∼1.8 kpc, and have sufficient energy to entrain the [O iii] clouds at ∼1.2 kpc. Assuming that the X-ray wind possesses the same radial mass distribution as the [O iii] gas, we find that the peak kinetic luminosity for this wind is 2 per cent of Mrk 34’s bolometric luminosity, which is in the 0.5–5 per cent range required by some models for efficient feedback. Our work shows that, although the kinetic luminosity as measured from [O iii]-emitting gas is frequently low, X-ray winds may provide more than one order of magnitude higher kinetic power.

We have been pursuing a comprehensive program of improving high-resolution imaging at the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) hosted at Lowell Observatory’s Anderson Mesa site, for the purpose of spatially resolved observations of faint objects at scales down to less than 1 milliarcsecond. This activity at NPOI is being implemented with two primary phases. First, the ‘PALANTIR’ upgrade of NPOI is augmenting the existing telescope array with three 1-meter PlaneWave PW1000 telescopes. These telescopes are housed in mobile domes for rapid relocation around the array, and are being augmented with adaptive optics. Second, we are implementing a ‘NPOI Plus-Up’ plan which is modernizing the array infrastructure and streamlining its operations. All of these activities are being carried out as our current operations are continuing.

We present an approach to upgrading the beam transport system at the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. These upgrades together will provide consistent beam transport, improve fringe contrast by preserving beam wavefront, reduce tracking errors by increasing the frequency response of the tracker, and automatically realign the entire transport train after thermal drift over the course of nightly observations. The beam transport system passively redirects stellar light from the telescope output to the fast delay line through a train of flat mirrors. This multi-mirror transport train reduces wavefront preservation due to stack-up of surface flatness errors. We demonstrated previously by using a contour-conformable mirror instead of one of the flats in the train that a 63% improvement in wavefront flatness is achievable. Also, the 25 Hz tracker is replaced by a 100 Hz tracker to further stabilize the trajectory during observations. Finally, we include an auto-aligner to systematically realign the entire beam transport system from thermal drifts. This is necessary for long baseline interferometry with short drift time constants. The beam transport system is common to all front ends (telescopes and siderostats), beam delay, and back-ends (beam combiners and detectors). These three upgrades expand the utility of the NPOI from a relatively short 97 m baseline interferometer to its full reconfigurable 437 m baselines and allow consistent beam transport with various potential experimental telescope front ends and beam combiner back-ends. In this paper, we describe our three-pronged upgrade approach, experimental method and results, and recommendations.

We present a multi-synchronous architecture for controlling multiple telescope or siderostat stations simultaneously from a central computer. This computer synchronously processes and distributes commands to six net- worked stations. The stations, comprised of a telescope or siderostat, a narrow angle tracker and a star-acquisition camera, are useful in the optical and infrared wavelengths. The central computer sends signed packets that include instructions for a particular station through the network at a rate of 600 Hz. A microcomputer at each station accepts its appropriate packets and parses the embedded data into control signals. These signals are then converted into appropriate outputs for motor controllers and piezoelectric actuators. The motors steer the siderostats while the piezoelectric actuators finely point the narrow angle tracker. A closed feedback loop couples the siderostat pointing with the narrow angle tracker to dynamically steer and maintain stable image positions of a stellar object. Two major components comprise this feedback loop: a wide-angle star acquisition camera inserted between a narrow angle tracker and siderostat, and a photon counter located near the end of the light path. The central computer utilizes positional error data from the camera to intricately align a siderostat. Simultaneously the computer processes pointing error derived from photon counts to finely correct a narrow angle tracker. This synchronized feedback and control system allows for precise, concurrent tracking over a wide range of stellar objects of interest. In this paper, we describe the parallelized software architecture, control hardware, experimental results, conclusions and recommendations.

We present two-dimensional ionized gas and stellar kinematics in the inner 1.4 × 1.9 kpc2 of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO 153-G20 obtained with the Gemini-South/Gemini multi-object spectrograph integral field unit (GMOS-IFU) at a spatial resolution of ~250 pc and spectral resolution of 36 km s−1. Strong [O iii], Hα, [N ii] and [S ii] emission lines are detected over the entire field of view. The stellar kinematics trace circular rotation with a projected velocity amplitude of ±96 km s−1, a kinematic major axis in position angle of 11°, and an average velocity dispersion of 123 km s−1. To analyse the gas kinematics, we used aperture spectra, position–velocity diagrams and single/double Gaussian fits to the emission lines. All lines show two clear kinematic components: a rotating component that follows the stellar kinematics, and a larger-dispersion component, close to the systemic velocity (from which most of the [O iii] emission comes), mainly detected to the south-west. We interpret this second component as gas outflowing at ∼400 km s−1 in a compact (300 pc) ionization cone with a half-opening angle ≤40°. The counter-cone is probably obscured behind a dust lane. We estimate a mass outflow rate of 1.1 M$\odot$ yr−1, 200 times larger than the estimated accretion rate on to the supermassive black hole, and a kinetic to radiative power ratio of 1.7 × 10−3. Bar-induced perturbations probably explain the remaining disturbances observed in the velocity field of the rotating gas component.

We have analysed Chandra/High Energy Transmission Gratings spectra of the X-ray emission line gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151. The zeroth order spectral images show extended H- and He-like O and Ne, up to a distance $r \sim$ 200 pc from the nucleus. Using the 1st order spectra, we measure an average line velocity $\sim -230$ km s$^{-1}$, suggesting significant outflow of X-ray gas. We generated Cloudy photoionisation models to fit the 1st order spectra. We required three emission-line components, with column density, log$N_{H}$, and ionisation parameter, log$U$, of 22.5/1.0, 22.5/0.19, and 23.0/-0.50, respectively. To estimate the total mass of ionised gas and the mass outflow rates, we applied the model parameters to fit the zeroth order emission-line profiles of Ne~IX and Ne~X. We determined the total mass of $\approx 5.4 \times$ 10$^{5}$ M_sun. Assuming the same kinematic profile as that for the [O~III] gas, the peak X-ray mass outflow rate was $\approx 1.8$ M_sun yr$^{-1}$, at $r \sim 150$ pc. The total mass and mass outflow rates are similar to those determined using [O~III], implying that the X-ray gas is a major outflow component. However, unlike the optical outflows, the X-ray outflow rate does not drop off at $r >$ 100 pc, which suggests that it may have a greater impact on the host galaxy., 19 pages, 12 figures. We present two-dimensional maps of emission-line fluxes and kinematics, as well as of the stellar kinematics of the central few kpc of five bright nearby Seyfert galaxies -- Mrk\,6, Mrk\,79, Mrk\,348, Mrk\,607 and Mrk\,1058 -- obtained from observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU) on the Gemini North Telescope. The data cover the inner 3\farcs5$\times$5\farcs0 -- corresponding to physical scales in the range 0.6$\times$0.9 to 1.5$\times$2.2\,kpc$^2$ -- at a spatial resolution ranging from 110 to 280 pc with a spectral coverage of 4300 -- 7100\,\AA\ and velocity resolution of $\approx$ 90\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The gas excitation is Seyfert like everywhere but show excitation, but show excitation gradients that are correlated with the gas kinematics, reddening and/or the gas density. The gas kinematics show in all cases two components: a rotation one similar to that observed in the stellar velocity field, and an outflow component. In the case of Mrk607, the gas is counter-rotating relative to the stars. Enhanced gas velocity dispersion is observed in association to the outflows according to two patterns: at the locations of the highest outflow velocities along the ionization axis or perpendicularly to it in a strip centered at the nucleus that we attribute to an equatorial outflow. Bipolar outflows are observed in Mrk\,348 and Mrk\,79, while in Mrk\,1058 only the blueshifted part is clearly observed, while in the cases of Mrk\,6 and Mrk\,607 the geometry of the outflow needs further constraints from modeling to be presented in a forthcoming study, where the mass flow rate and powers will also be obtained., Comment: 20 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long-slit G430M and G750M spectra to analyse the extended [O~III] 5007A emission in a sample of twelve nearby (z < 0.12) luminous (L_bol > 1.6 x 10^45 erg s^-1) QSO2s. The purpose of the study is to determine the properties of the mass outflows of ionised gas and their role in AGN feedback. We measure fluxes and velocities as functions of radial distances. Using Cloudy models and ionising luminosities derived from [O~III] 5007A, we are able to estimate the densities for the emission-line gas. From these results, we derive masses of [O~III]-emitting gas, mass outflow rates, kinetic energies, kinetic luminosities, momenta and momentum flow rates as a function of radial distance for each of the targets. For the sample, masses are several times 10^3 - 10^7 solar masses and peak outflow rates are 9.3 x 10^-3 Msun/yr to 10.3 Msun/yr. The peak kinetic luminosities are 3.4 x 10^-8 to 4.9 x 10^-4 of the bolometric luminosity, which does not approach the 5.0 x 10^-3 - 5.0 x 10^-2 range required by some models for efficient feedback. For Mrk 34, which has the largest kinetic luminosity of our sample, in order to produce efficient feedback there would have to be 10 times more [O~III]-emitting gas than we detected at its position of maximum kinetic luminosity. Three targets show extended [O~III] emission, but compact outflow regions. We present optical SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) integral field spectroscopy, Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging, Chandra X-ray imaging, and Very Large Array radio interferometry of the merging galaxy 2MASX J04234080+0408017, which hosts a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z = 0.046. Our observations reveal that radiatively driven, ionized gas outflows are successful to distances > 10 kpc due to the low mass of the host system, encompassing the entirety of the observed optical emission. We also find that at large radii, where observed velocities cannot be reproduced by radiative driving models, high velocity kinematics are likely due to mechanical driving from AGN winds impacting high density host material. This impacting deposits sufficient energy to shock the host material, producing thermal X-ray emission and cosmic rays, which in turn promote the formation of in situ radio structure in a pseudo-jet morphology along the high density lanes., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 20 pages, 20 figures

We present the first results from the Fundamental Reference AGN Monitoring Experiment (FRAMEx), an observational campaign dedicated to understanding the physical processes that affect the apparent positions and morphologies of AGNs. In this work, we obtained simultaneous Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio observations for a snapshot campaign of 25 local AGNs that form a volume-complete sample with hard X-ray (14-195 keV) luminosities above $10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$, out to a distance of 40 Mpc. Despite achieving an observation depth of $\sim20$ $\mu$Jy, we find that 16 of 25 AGNs in our sample are not detected with the VLBA on milli-arcsecond (sub-parsec) scales, and the corresponding core radio luminosity upper limits are systematically below predictions from the Fundamental Plane of black hole activity. Using archival Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio measurements, our sample jumps back onto the Fundamental Plane, suggesting that extended radio emission is responsible for the apparent correlation between radio emission, X-ray emission, and black hole mass. We suggest that this discrepancy is likely due to extra-nuclear radio emission produced via interactions between the AGN and host environment. We compare VLBA observations of AGNs to VLA observations of nearby Galactic black holes (GBHs) and we find a mass-independent correlation between radio and X-ray luminosities of black holes of $L_\mathrm{6cm}$/$L_\mathrm{2-10 keV}$ $\sim$ 10$^{-6}$, in line with predictions for coronal emission, but allowing for the possibility of truly radio silent AGNs., Comment: 19 pages + 9 page Appendix, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

beta Lyr A is a complex binary system with an extensive observational dataset: light curves (from FUV to FIR), interferometric squared visibility, closure phase, triple product measurements, spectral-energy distribution (SED), high-resolution spectroscopy, differential visibility amplitude, and also differential phase. In particular, we use spectra from Ondrejov 2m telescope from 2013 to 2015, to measure the emission in Halpha, HeI, SiII, NeI, or CII lines, and differential interferometry by CHARA/VEGA from the 2013 campaign to measure wavelength-dependent sizes across Halpha and HeI 6678. This allows us to constrain not only optically thick objects (primary, secondary, accretion disk), but also optically thin objects (disk atmosphere, jets, shell). We extended our modelling tool Pyshellspec (based on Shellspec; a 1D LTE radiative transfer code) to include all new observables, to compute differential visibilities/phases, to perform a Doppler tomography, and to determine a joint chi^2 metric. After an optimisation of 38 free parameters, we derive a robust model of the beta Lyr A system. According to the model, the emission is formed in an extended atmosphere of the disk, two perpendicular jets expanding at ~700 km s^-1, and a symmetric shell with the radius ~70 R_S. The spectroscopy indicates a low abundance of carbon, 10^-2 of the solar value. We also quantify systematic differences between datasets and discuss alternative models, with higher resolution, additional asymmetries, or He-rich abundance., Comment: 19 pages, 31 figures

We have used narrow-band [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 and H$\alpha$+[NII]$\lambda\lambda6548,84$ Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of 9 luminous (L[OIII]$>10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$) type 2 QSOs with redshifts $0.1, Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

We present spatially resolved mass outflow rate measurements ($\dot M_{out}$) for the narrow line region of Markarian 34, the nearest Compton-thick type 2 quasar (QSO2). Spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and at Apache Point Observatory reveal complex kinematics, with distinct signatures of outflow and rotation within 2 kpc of the nucleus. Using multi-component photoionization models, we find that the outflow contains a total ionized gas mass of $M \approx 1.6 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}$. Combining this with the kinematics yields a peak outflow rate of $\dot M_{out} \approx 2.0 \pm 0.4~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ at a distance of 470 pc from the nucleus, with a spatially integrated kinetic energy of $E \approx 1.4 \times 10^{55}$ erg. These outflows are more energetic than those observed in Mrk 573 and NGC 4151, supporting a correlation between luminosity and outflow strength even though they have similar peak outflow rates. The mix of rotational and outflowing components suggests that spatially resolved observations are required to determine accurate outflow parameters in systems with complex kinematics. We recently used archival and newly obtained data from the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer to measure the fundamental properties of 87 stars. The sample consisted of 5 dwarfs, 3 subgiants, 69 giants, 3 bright giants, and 7 supergiants, and spanned a wide range of spectral classes from B to M. We combined our angular diameters with photometric and distance information from the literature to determine each star’s physical radius, effective temperature, bolometric flux, luminosity, mass, and age. Several dozen of the stars have visibility curves sampled down to the first null, where the visibilities drop to zero. Here we present preliminary results showing limb-darkening fits for the five zero crossing stars that have the best coverage of the second lobe.

Since 1994, the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) has operated at visual wavelengths (450 to 850 nm). Its primary Classic backend is a pupil-plane combiner that disperses the light at a resolution R ≈ 50, uses avalanche photo-diodes as photon-counting detectors, and scans interference fringes by modulating the delay at 1 kHz. The newer NPOI image-plane combiner, VISION (Tennessee State University), which is similar to CHARA’s MIRC and is currently being upgraded, dispenses with delay modulation. We are now developing a third backend to expand into the near infrared. Its primary purpose will be to stabilize the NPOI for high-resolution observations by bootstrapping from the infrared to visual wavelengths.

We present the results of multi band optical photometry (B, V, R and I) for 66% of the sample of geosynchronous satellites observable from Flagstaff, AZ. Observations were done while the targets were at solar phase angle smaller than ±5°, to probe the period when they are expected to reach maximum brightness. We discuss the distribution of magnitudes and colors of the sample, how these properties correlate with satellite age, and the how the color information can be used to differentiate between satellite buses.

We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [O III] {\lambda}5007 emission for a sample of 12 nearby (z < 0.12), luminous Type 2 quasars (QSO2s), which we use to measure the extent and kinematics of their AGN-ionized gas. We find the size of the observed [O III] regions scale with luminosity in comparison to nearby, less luminous Seyfert galaxies and radially outflowing kinematics to exist in all targets. We report an average maximum outflow radius of $\sim$600 pc, with gas continuing to be kinematically influenced by the central AGN out to an average radius of $\sim$1130 pc. These findings question the effectiveness of AGN being capable of clearing material from their host bulge in the nearby universe and suggest that disruption of gas by AGN activity may prevent star formation without requiring evacuation. We present the first spatially resolved mass outflow rate measurements ($\dot M_{out}$) of the optical emission line gas in the narrow line region (NLR) of a Seyfert 2 galaxy, Markarian 573. Using long slit spectra and [O III] imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and Apache Point Observatory in conjunction with emission line diagnostics and Cloudy photoionization models, we find a peak outflow rate of $\dot M_{out} \approx$ 3.4 $\pm$ 0.5 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ at a distance of 210 pc from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). The outflow extends to distances of 600 pc from the nucleus with a total mass and kinetic energy of $M \approx 2.2 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}$ and $E \approx 5.1 \times 10^{54}$ erg, revealing the outflows to be more energetic than those in the lower luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 (Crenshaw et al. 2015). The peak outflow rate is an order of magnitude larger than the mass accretion and nuclear outflow rates, indicating local in-situ acceleration of the circumnuclear NLR gas. We compare these results to global techniques that quantify an average outflow rate across the NLR, and find the latter are subject to larger uncertainties. We investigate a sample of 3412 {\it International Celestial Reference Frame} (ICRF3) extragalactic radio-loud sources with accurate positions determined by VLBI in the S/X band, mostly active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars, which are cross-matched with optical sources in the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2). The main goal of this study is to determine a core sample of astrometric objects that define the mutual orientation of the two fundamental reference frames, the Gaia (optical) and the ICRF3 (radio) frames. The distribution of normalized offsets between the VLBI sources and their optical counterparts is non-Rayleigh, with a deficit around the modal value and a tail extending beyond the 3-sigma confidence level. A few filters are applied to the sample in order to discard double cross-matches, confusion sources, and Gaia astrometric solutions of doubtful quality. {\it Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System} (Pan-STARRS) and {\it Dark Energy Survey} (DES) stacked multi-color images are used to further deselect objects that are less suitable for precision astrometry, such as extended galaxies, double and multiple sources, and obvious misidentifications. After this cleaning, 2642 quasars remain, of which 20\% still have normalized offset magnitudes exceeding 3, or 99\% confidence level. We publish a list of 2118 radio-loud quasars of prime astrometric quality. The observed dependence of binned median offset on redshift shows the expected decline at small redshifts, but also an unexpected rise at $z\sim 1.6$, which may be attributed to the emergence of the C IV emission line in the Gaia's $G$ band. We present the fundamental properties of 87 stars based on angular diameter measurements from the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer, 36 of which have not been measured previously using interferometry. Our sample consists of 5 dwarfs, 3 subgiants, 69 giants, 3 bright giants, and 7 supergiants, and span a wide range of spectral classes from B to M. We combined our angular diameters with photometric and distance information from the literature to determine each star's physical radius, effective temperature, bolometric flux, luminosity, mass, and age., 7 tables, 4 figures

One of the main problems faced by the Space Situational Awareness community is the detection and characterization of faint objects around geosats. Independent of the origin of these objects, whether they are debris or controlled spacecraft, they can potentially harm these assets and contaminate the geobelt environment. The challenge of detecting these companion objects comes from their proximity and brightness ratio relative to geosats. Here we present a novel interferometric fringe nulling technique, aimed at solving these issues. This technique takes advantage of the fact that the presence of companions introduces large phase fluctuations in the fringe phase observed by an interferometer, when the interferometer is observing a target at spatial frequencies where the fringe amplitude is near zero. We describe the ongoing development of this technique at the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer, and the results of simulations of interferometric observations of satellites with companions. We also present the current state of the NPOI and related SSA work being done with this interferometer, as well as undergoing upgrades to the system.

We present a combined morphological and X-ray analysis of Was 49, an isolated, dual AGN system notable for the presence of a dominant AGN Was 49b in the disk of the primary galaxy Was 49a, at a projected radial distance of 8 kpc from the nucleus. Using X-ray data from Chandra, NuSTAR, and Swift, we find that this AGN has a bolometric luminosity of L_bol ~ 2 x 10^45 erg/s, with a black hole mass of M_BH=1.3^{+2.9}_{-0.9} x 10^8 M_Sol. Despite its large mass, our analysis of optical data from the Discovery Channel Telescope shows that the supermassive black hole is hosted by a stellar counterpart with a mass of only 5.6^{+4.9}_{-2.6} x 10^9 M_Sol, making the SMBH potentially larger than expected from SMBH-galaxy scaling relations, and the stellar counterpart exhibits a morphology that is consistent with dwarf elliptical galaxies. Our analysis of the system in the r and K bands indicates that Was 49 is a minor merger, with a mass ratio of Was 49a to Was 49b between 1:7 and 1:15. This is in contrast with findings that the most luminous merger-triggered AGNs are found in major mergers, and that minor mergers predominantly enhance AGN activity in the primary galaxy., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a grand-design spiral galaxy associated with a double-lobed radio source. J1649+2635 (z = 0.0545) is a red spiral galaxy with a prominent bulge that it is associated with a L$_{1.4{\rm GHz}}\sim$10$^{24}$WHz$^{-1}$ double-lobed radio source that spans almost 100kpc. J1649+2635 has a black hole mass of M$_{\rm BH} \sim$ 3--7 $\times$ 10$^8$M$_{\odot}$ and SFR$\sim$ 0.26 -- 2.6M$_{\odot}$year$^{-1}$. The galaxy hosts a $\sim$96kpc diffuse optical halo, which is unprecedented for spiral galaxies. We find that J1649+2635 resides in an overdense environment with a mass of M$_{dyn} = 7.7^{+7.9}_{-4.3} \times 10^{13}$M$_{\odot}$, likely a galaxy group below the detection threshold of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. We suggest one possible scenario for the association of double-lobed radio emission from J1649+2635 is that the source may be similar to a Seyfert galaxy, located in a denser-than-normal environment. We present a near infrared study of the spectral components of the continuum in the inner 500$\times$500 pc$^2$ of the nearby Seyfert galaxy Mrk573 using adaptive optics near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with the instrument NIFS of the Gemini North Telescope at a spatial resolution of $\sim$50 pc. We performed spectral synthesis using the {\sc starlight} code and constructed maps for the contributions of different age components of the stellar population: young ($age\leq100$ Myr), young-intermediate ($1002$ Gyr) to the near-IR K-band continuum, as well as their contribution to the total stellar mass. We found that the old stellar population is dominant within the inner 250 pc, while the intermediate age components dominate the continuum at larger distances. A young stellar component contributes up to $\sim$20% within the inner $\sim$70 pc, while hot dust emission and featureless continuum components are also necessary to fit the nuclear spectrum, contributing up to 20% of the K-band flux there. The radial distribution of the different age components in the inner kiloparsec of Mrk573 is similar to those obtained by our group for the Seyfert galaxies Mrk1066, Mrk1157 and NGC1068 in previous works using a similar methodology. Young stellar populations ($\leq$100 Myr) are seen in the inner 200-300 pc for all galaxies contributing with $\ge$20% of the K-band flux, while the near-IR continuum is dominated by the contribution of intermediate-age stars ($t=$100 Myr-2 Gyr) at larger distances. Older stellar populations dominate in the inner 250 pc.

We plan to measure the angular diameters of a sample of Penn State-Torun Planet Search (PTPS) giant exoplanet host star candidates using the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. The radii of evolved giant stars obtained using spectroscopy are usually ill-defined because of the method's indirect nature and evolutionary model dependency. The star's radius is a critical parameter used to calculate luminosity and mass, which are often not well known for giant stars. Therefore, this problem also affects the orbital period, mass, and surface temperature of the planet. Our interferometric observations will significantly decrease the errors for these parameters. We describe the current status of the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI), including developments since the last SPIE meeting. The NPOI group has added stations as far as 250m from the array center and added numerous infrastructure improvements. Science programs include stellar diameters and limb darkening, binary orbits, Be star disks, exoplanet host stars, and progress toward high-resolution stellar surface imaging. Technical and infrastructure projects include on-sky demonstrations of baseline bootstrapping with six array elements and of the VISION beam combiner, control system updates, integration of the long delay lines, and updated firmware for the Classic beam combiner. Our plans to add up to four 1.8 m telescopes are no longer viable, but we have recently acquired separate funding for adding three 1 m AO-equipped telescopes and an infrared beam combiner to the array.

As a part of regular operations, the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) uses Narrow Angle Trackers (NAT) for atmospheric tip-tilt correction. This correction is done using a quad cell array for each station, and is based on the error signals measured by these arrays. We compiled NPOI NAT jitter information for the period of 2005 to 2014. Here we investigate the correlation of the NAT jitter between different NPOI stations, and determine a correction for shot-noise induced jitter. We present initial results from the correlation between NAT jitter and quasi simultaneous seeing measurements done with the Lowell Observatory 31" telescope, separated by 500 m. We also discuss some limitations of this technique and future improvements.
