Abstract Seaweeds have been used by several industrial sectors, such as the food, feed, pharmaceutical and biofuel industries. Thereby, techniques to increase seaweed production are needed due to the rising global demand for biomass. Thus, we investigated the effects of different weekly nutrient pulses [N and P at ratios of 10:1 (T1), 20:2 (T2), and 50:5 (T3)] on the biomass, relative growth rate (RGR) and biochemical composition of Gracilaria domingensis. A control without nutrient pulses was also established. The highest biomass values were recorded in T1. The RGR was more constant in T1 and T2 than in T3 throughout the cultivation. Significant decreases in RGR were observed in the control compared to the other treatments, and null RGR was recorded in T3. Regarding the seaweed biochemical composition, the lowest carbohydrate and lipid content and the highest ash content were recorded in T1. In our study, G. domingensis showed nutritional values similar or even superior to those reported for other seaweeds used as food. We concluded that T1 is the most suitable treatment to increase G. domingensis production. In addition to being the least expensive treatment, in T1, G. domingensis exhibited the highest biomass values, constant RGR, and nutritional composition suitable for human consumption.

Abstract Miscanthus is a perennial grass that can yield substantial amounts of biomass in land areas considered marginal. In the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina, marginal lands are typically located in coarse‐textured soils with low nutrient retention and water‐holding capacity, and high erosivity potential. Little is known about miscanthus water use under these conditions. We conducted a study to better understand the efficiency with which miscanthus uses natural resources such as water and radiant energy to produce harvestable dry biomass in comparison to corn, a typical commodity crop grown in the region. We hypothesized that under non‐limiting soil water conditions, miscanthus would have greater available energy and water use rates owing to its greater leaf area, thus leading to greater agronomic yields. Conversely, these effects would be negated under drought conditions. Our measurements showed that miscanthus intercepted more radiant energy than corn, which led to greater albedo (by 0.05), lower net radiation (by 4% or 0.4 MJ m−2 day−1), and lower soil heat flux (by 69% or 1.0 MJ m−2 day−1) than corn on average. Consequently, miscanthus had greater available energy (by 7% or 0.6 MJ m−2 day−1) and water use rates (by 14% or 0.5 mm day−1) than corn throughout the growing season on average, which partially confirmed our hypothesis. Greater water use rates and radiation interception by miscanthus did not translate to greater water‐use (1.5 g kg−1 vs. 1.6 g kg−1) and radiation‐use (0.9 g MJ−1 vs. 1.1 g MJ−1) efficiencies than corn. Compared to literature values, our data indicated that water and radiation availability were not limiting at our study site. Thus, it is likely that marginal land features present at the Coastal Plain region such as low soil fertility and high air temperatures throughout the growing season may constrain agronomic yields even if soil water and radiant energy are non‐limiting.

In this brief report, we present a model that complements the well-established canonical model for the spin evolution of rotation-powered pulsars, which is typically used to estimate ages, spin-down luminosity, and surface magnetic fields of middle-aged pulsars. We analytically explore the growth of the magnetic field during a pulsar’s early history, a period shortly after supernova explosion from which the neutron star forms, encompassing the hypercritical phase and subsequent reemergence of the magnetic field. We analyze the impact of such growth on the early dynamics of the pulsar. Investigations into a pulsar’s magnetic evolution are not new, and we expand the knowledge in this area by examining the evolutionary implications in a scenario governed by growth functions. The proposed growth functions, calibrated with data from the Crab pulsar, exhibit satisfactory physical behaviors.

Abstract Miscanthus is a productive perennial grass that is suitable as a bioenergy crop in “marginal” lands (e.g., eroded soils) with low water holding capacity. However, little is known about the impact of miscanthus residues on vapor transport and soil water budgets. Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure the vapor conductance through miscanthus residues and its effect on soil water evaporation. The ranges for the length, width, and thickness of residue elements were 0.5–9.0, 0.1–0.5, and 0.1–0.5 cm, respectively. Average residue areal, bulk, and skeletal densities were 0.88 kg m−2, 24 kg m−3, and 1006 kg m−3, respectively, giving a porosity of 0.98 m3 m−3. A power function described the decrease in conductance with increasing residue load. The corresponding conductance for a residue load of 0.88 kg m−2 was 1.6 mm s−1. During the first days of a 60‐day drying experiment, cumulative evaporation showed logarithmic decay with increasing residue load. Conversely, cumulative evaporation during the last days of the study showed little difference between treatments. Measurements indicated that there is a “critical” residue load (∼1.0 kg m−2) beyond which evaporation no longer decreases appreciably when the soil is under the stage 1 evaporation regime. Results suggest that soil water conservation in marginal lands may be accomplished by maintaining moderate amounts of bioenergy grass residue covering the soil. Determining “critical” loads for different residue types is a knowledge gap that merits further research.

Abstract Introduction The treatment landscape for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) continues to expand. This network meta-analysis (NMA) updates a previously conducted NMA to include data from the most recent phase 3 trials to assess the comparative efficacy of targeted systemic therapies without the addition of topical corticosteroids (TCS) and/or topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCI) in adults with moderate-to-severe AD. Methods Data from recent phase 3 monotherapy trials of lebrikizumab, ADvocate1 (NCT04146363) and ADvocate2 (NCT04178967), were included in the analyses, along with other eligible phase 3/4 randomized placebo-controlled trials for abrocitinib, baricitinib, dupilumab, tralokinumab, and upadacitinib identified through a systemic literature review in Silverberg et al. (Dermatol Ther (Heidelb) 12(5):1181–1196, 2022). The proportion of patients achieving Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) improvement ≥ 90% from baseline (EASI-90), EASI improvement ≥ 75% from baseline (EASI-75), ≥ 4-point improvement on Pruritus Numerical Rating Scale from baseline (ΔNRS ≥ 4), and Investigator Global Assessment (IGA) score of 0 or 1 (clear or almost clear) and reduction of ≥ 2 points from baseline (IGA 0/1) were evaluated using a Bayesian network meta-analysis. Results The updated NMA analyzed 13 unique placebo-controlled trials involving 7105 patients in 32 arms across 6 targeted therapies. Upadacitinib 30 mg was the most efficacious therapy across all endpoints at the primary timepoint (week 12 or 16) and at earlier timepoints, generally followed by abrocitinib 200 mg, upadacitinib 15 mg, dupilumab 300 mg, and lebrikizumab 250 mg or abrocitinib 100 mg. Baricitinib 2 mg and tralokinumab were generally ranked lower across outcomes. Conclusions Many factors need to be considered for treatment selection for AD, especially as new treatments continue to emerge. After incorporating recent placebo-controlled phase 3 data of lebrikizumab, upadacitinib 30 mg, upadacitinib 15 mg, and abrocitinib 200 mg remain the most efficacious targeted systemic therapies over 12–16 weeks of therapy in AD. These updated findings can help healthcare providers when creating a patient’s personalized treatment plan.

BackgroundMedical examinations contain repeatedly measured data from multiple visits, including imaging variables collected from different modalities. However, the utility of such data for the prediction of time-to-event is unknown, and only a fraction of the data is typically used for risk prediction. We hypothesized that multimodal longitudinal imaging data could improve dynamic disease prognosis of cardiovascular and renal disease (CVRD).MethodsIn a multi-centered cohort of 5,114 CARDIA participants, we included 166 longitudinal imaging variables from five imaging modalities: Echocardiography (Echo), Cardiac and Abdominal Computed Tomography (CT), Dual-Energy x-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) collected from young adulthood to mid-life over 30 years (1985–2016) to perform dynamic survival analysis of CVRD events using machine learning dynamic survival analysis (Dynamic-DeepHit, LTRCforest, and Extended Cox for Time-varying Covariates). Risk probabilities were continuously updated as new data were collected. Model performance was assessed using integrated AUC and C-index and compared to traditional risk factors.ResultsLongitudinal imaging data, even when being irregularly collected with high missing rates, improved CVRD dynamic prediction (0.03 in integrated AUC, up to 0.05 in C-index compared to traditional risk factors; best model's C-index = 0.80–0.83 up to 20 years from baseline) from young adulthood followed up to midlife. Among imaging variables, Echo and CT variables contributed significantly to improved risk estimation. Echo measured in early adulthood predicted midlife CVRD risks almost as well as Echo measured 10–15 years later (0.01 C-index difference). The most recent CT exam provided the most accurate prediction for short-term risk estimation. Brain MRI markers provided additional information from cardiac Echo and CT variables that led to a slightly improved prediction.ConclusionsLongitudinal multimodal imaging data readily collected from follow-up exams can improve CVRD dynamic prediction. Echocardiography measured early can provide a good long-term risk estimation, while CT/calcium scoring variables carry atherosclerotic signatures that benefit more immediate risk assessment starting in middle-age.

In recent decades, acceptance of nanoparticles (NPs) in therapeutic applications has increased because of their outstanding physicochemical features. By overcoming the drawbacks of conventional therapy, the utilization of metal NPs, metal-oxide, or metal supported nanomaterials have shown to have significant therapeutic applications in medicine. This is proved by a lot of clinical and laboratory investigations that show improved treatment outcomes, site-specific drug delivery, and fewer side effects compared to traditional medicine. The metal NPs interaction with living cells (animal and plant) showed many ways to develop therapeutic models with the NPs. Despite all of the advancements that science has achieved, there is still a need to find out their performance for long-term use to solve modern challenges. In this regard, the present documentation reviews some potential metals, including silver (Ag), gold (Au), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and nickel (Ni) NPs, as therapeutic agents in various areas such as anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and applicable for the treatment of many other diseases. Depending on the outstanding ongoing research and practical trials, metal-based NPs can be considered the hope of prospective modern therapeutic areas.

Abstract Due to the large number of industrial applications of transparent conductive oxides (TCOs), this study focuses on one of the most important metal oxides. The RF-magnetron sputtering method was used to fabricate NiO thin films on both quartz and silicon substrates at room temperature under flow of Argon and Oxygen. The sputtered samples were annealed in N2 atmosphere at 400, 500, and 600 °C for 2 hours. Using the AFM micrographs and WSXM 4.0 software, the basic surface parameters, including root mean square roughness, average roughness, kurtosis, skewness, etc., were computed. Advanced surface parameters were obtained by the Shannon entropy through a developed algorithm, and the power spectral density and fractal succolarity were extracted by related methods. Optical properties were studied using a transmittance spectrum to achieve the optical bandgap, absorption coefficient, Urbach energy, and other optical parameters. Photoluminescence properties also showed interesting results in accordance with optical properties. Finally, electrical characterizations and I–V measurements of the NiO/Si heterojunction device demonstrated that it can be used as a good diode device.

Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is an aggressive disease with a complex treatment. In Brazil, as in most developing countries, data are scarce, but mortality seems exceedingly high. We have created a centralized program involving a multidisciplinary clinic in a region comprising 7 municipalities. Helping patients with adequate performance status get the right treatment helped to reduce 90-day mortality after radical cystectomy from 37% to 1.9%.

Abstract Background Multivariate longitudinal data are under-utilized for survival analysis compared to cross-sectional data (CS - data collected once across cohort). Particularly in cardiovascular risk prediction, despite available methods of longitudinal data analysis, the value of longitudinal information has not been established in terms of improved predictive accuracy and clinical applicability. Methods We investigated the value of longitudinal data over and above the use of cross-sectional data via 6 distinct modeling strategies from statistics, machine learning, and deep learning that incorporate repeated measures for survival analysis of the time-to-cardiovascular event in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort. We then examined and compared the use of model-specific interpretability methods (Random Survival Forest Variable Importance) and model-agnostic methods (SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) and Temporal Importance Model Explanation (TIME)) in cardiovascular risk prediction using the top-performing models. Results In a cohort of 3539 participants, longitudinal information from 35 variables that were repeatedly collected in 6 exam visits over 15 years improved subsequent long-term (17 years after) risk prediction by up to 8.3% in C-index compared to using baseline data (0.78 vs. 0.72), and up to approximately 4% compared to using the last observed CS data (0.75). Time-varying AUC was also higher in models using longitudinal data (0.86–0.87 at 5 years, 0.79–0.81 at 10 years) than using baseline or last observed CS data (0.80–0.86 at 5 years, 0.73–0.77 at 10 years). Comparative model interpretability analysis revealed the impact of longitudinal variables on model prediction on both the individual and global scales among different modeling strategies, as well as identifying the best time windows and best timing within that window for event prediction. The best strategy to incorporate longitudinal data for accuracy was time series massive feature extraction, and the easiest interpretable strategy was trajectory clustering. Conclusion Our analysis demonstrates the added value of longitudinal data in predictive accuracy and epidemiological utility in cardiovascular risk survival analysis in young adults via a unified, scalable framework that compares model performance and explainability. The framework can be extended to a larger number of variables and other longitudinal modeling methods. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00005130, Registration Date: 26/05/2000.

Herein, we have explored the defects-driven photocatalytic properties of ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using different sweet Amapá-latex contents as natural chelating agents. XRD, SAED, and FTIR analyses confirmed the formation of single-phase ZnO nanoparticles. TEM analysis showed nanoparticles with strong polycrystalline nature and average particle size ranging from 14.1 to 16.5 nm, with the smaller particle size (ZnO#10) exhibiting a larger surface area. The pentacyclic triterpenes present in Amapá-latex chelating agents play a critical role in the complexation of Zn2+ ions and the formation of pure ZnO nanostructures. The broad photoluminescence spectra revealed several structural defects in the nanoparticles, particularly, VZn, VO++, Oi+, and ZnO were widely observed for the sample synthesized using 10 mL of Amapá-latex (ZnO#10). A 99.47% visible-light-mediated discoloration of the aqueous methylene blue dye solution containing ZnO#10 nanoparticles was mainly ascribed to the continuous production of hydroxyl radicals by the defective structure of this sample. Furthermore, a ∼30% TOC removal was observed after the 5th cycle of reuse of ZnO#10 nanoparticles, proving that the production of reactive species cleaves and breaks down MB dye molecules. Thus, the sweet Amapá-latex proved to be an effective chelating agent for obtaining ZnO nanoparticles with singular optical-structural characteristics that can be useful for treating dye-contaminated textile effluents.

Aim of study: A 45-day trial was conducted to evaluate fasting as a possible way of food strategy during production of juvenile cobias (Rachycentron canadum). Area of study: The study was conducted in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Material and methods: The following different protocols were used to organize their feeding: C, fish fed to satiety twice a day for 45 days; U1, fish fed to satiety twice a day on alternate days; U2, fish fed to satiety twice daily for five consecutive days, followed by two days of food deprivation, cyclically; U5, fish subjected to food deprivation for five days and then fed to satiety twice a day for 40 days; U10, fish subjected to food deprivation for ten days and then fed to satiety twice a day for 35 days; and U15, fish subjected to food deprivation for fifteen days and then fed to satiety twice a day for 30 days. Main results: No mortality was observed during the trial period. The different feeding protocols significantly affected juvenile cobias development and wellbeing. The final weight (g) of cobia juveniles was C – 91.9 ± 9.1; U1 – 75.0 ± 11.2; U2 – 72.2 ± 6.0; U5 – 70.3 ± 6.1; U10 – 63.4 ± 4.6; U15 – 54.4 ± 4.7. No compensatory growth was observed during the entire experimental period. Research highlights: Continuous fasting had a more severe effect than intermittent fasting. Significantly greater hepatocyte counts were correlated with longer fasting periods. Fasting protocols should not be recommended for juvenile cobias.

Blast furnace dust waste (BFDW) proved efficient as a photocatalyst for the decolorization of methylene blue (MB) dye in water. Structural analysis unequivocally identified α-Fe2O3 as the predominant phase, constituting approximately 92%, with a porous surface showcasing unique 10–30 nm agglomerated nanoparticles. Chemical and thermal analyses indicated surface-bound water and carbonate molecules, with the main phase’s thermal stability up to 900 °C. Electrical conductivity analysis revealed charge transfer resistance values of 616.4 Ω and electrode resistance of 47.8 Ω. The Mott-Schottky analysis identified α-Fe2O3 as an n-type semiconductor with a flat band potential of 0.181 V vs. Ag/AgCl and a donor density of 1.45 × 1015 cm−3. The 2.2 eV optical bandgap and luminescence stem from α-Fe2O3 and weak ferromagnetism arises from structural defects and surface effects. With a 74% photocatalytic efficiency, stable through three photodegradation cycles, BFDW outperforms comparable waste materials in MB degradation mediated by visible light. The elemental trapping experiment exposed hydroxyl radicals (OH•) and superoxide anions (O2−•) as the primary species in the photodegradation process. Consequently, iron oxide-based BFDW emerges as an environmentally friendly alternative for wastewater treatment, underscoring the pivotal role of its unique physical properties in the photocatalytic process.

Coumarins are compounds with scientifically proven antibacterial properties, and modifications to the chemical structure are known to improve their effects. This information is even more relevant with the unbridled advances of antibiotic resistance, where Staphylococcus aureus and its efflux pumps play a prominent role. The study’s objective was to evaluate the potential of synthetic coumarins with different substitutions in the C-3 position as possible inhibitors of the NorA and MepA efflux pumps of S. aureus. For this evaluation, the following steps took place: (i) the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC); (ii) the association of coumarins with fluoroquinolones and ethidium bromide (EtBr); (iii) the assessment of the effect on EtBr fluorescence emission; (iv) molecular docking; and (v) an analysis of the effect on membrane permeability. Coumarins reduced the MICs of fluoroquinolones and EtBr between 50% and 87.5%. Coumarin C1 increased EtBr fluorescence emission between 20 and 40% by reinforcing the evidence of efflux inhibition. The molecular docking results demonstrated that coumarins have an affinity with efflux pumps and establish mainly hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. Furthermore, C1 did not change the permeability of the membrane. Therefore, we conclude that these 3-substituted coumarins act as inhibitors of the NorA and MepA efflux pumps of S. aureus.

Background: Systemic atopic dermatitis treatments that have acceptable safety are needed. Objective: To evaluate the safety of the oral Janus kinase inhibitor upadacitinib in combination with topical corticosteroids (TCSs) for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Methods: In this phase 3, double-blind study (Rising Up), Japanese patients (12-75 years) with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive 15 mg of upadacitinib + TCS, 30 mg of upadacitinib + TCS, or a placebo + TCS (rerandomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either 15 or 30 mg of upadacitinib + TCS at week 16). Adverse events and laboratory data were assessed for safety. Results: In 272 treated patients, the serious adverse event rates were similar for 15- and 30-mg upadacitinib + TCS at week 24 (15 mg, 56%; 30 mg, 64%) but greater than those for placebo + TCS (42%). Acne (all mild or moderate; none leading to discontinuation) occurred more frequently with upadacitinib + TCS (15 mg, 13.2%; 30 mg, 19.8%) than with placebo + TCS (5.6%). Furthermore, herpes zoster infection (4.4% vs 0%), anemia (1.1% vs 0%), neutropenia (4.4% vs 1.1%), and creatine phosphokinase elevations (2.2% vs 1.1%) occurred more frequently with 30-mg upadacitinib + TCS than with 15-mg upadacitinib + TCS; none of these events were reported with placebo + TCS. No thromboembolic events, malignancies, gastrointestinal perforations, active tuberculosis, or deaths occurred. Limitations: The limitations included a small sample size and short observation period as well as nongeneralizability of the results beyond Japanese populations. Conclusions: The results were generally consistent with those of previous reports; no new safety risks were detected.
