Drought stress is one of the key plant stresses reducing grain yield in cereal crops worldwide. Although it is not a breeding target in Northern Europe, the changing climate and the drought of 2018 have increased its significance in the region. A key challenge, therefore, is to identify novel germplasm with higher drought tolerance, a task that will require continuous characterization of a large number of genotypes. The aim of this work was to assess if phenotyping systems with low-cost consumer-grade digital cameras can be used to characterize germplasm for drought tolerance. To achieve this goal, we built a proximal phenotyping cart mounted with digital cameras and evaluated it by characterizing 142 winter wheat genotypes for drought tolerance under field conditions. The same genotypes were additionally characterized for seedling stage traits by imaging under controlled growth conditions. The analysis revealed that under field conditions, plant biomass, relative growth rates, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from different growth stages estimated by imaging were significantly correlated to drought tolerance. Under controlled growth conditions, root count at the seedling stage evaluated by imaging was significantly correlated to adult plant drought tolerance observed in the field. Random forest models were trained by integrating measurements from field and controlled conditions and revealed that plant biomass and relative growth rates at key plant growth stages are important predictors of drought tolerance. Thus, based on the results, it can be concluded that the consumer-grade cameras can be key components of affordable automated phenotyping systems to accelerate pre-breeding for drought tolerance.

Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur positiv psykologi skulle kunna främja arbetsmiljön och den psykiska hälsan hos personalen inom äldreomsorgen genom en ökad känsla av sammanhang, välbefinnande och mening. Via en enkät har personalen själva fått skatta sitt eget och arbetsplatsens värde. Resultatet visar på att denna arbetsgrupp känner mening och arbetsglädje, vilket kan vara en bra grund för att bygga vidare på en arbetsmiljö och arbetsgrupp som innehåller positivt klimat, positiva relationer, positiv kommunikation och positiv mening – något som skapar engagemang, förståelse och en frisk arbetsgrupp som har en positiv psykisk hälsa.

Vetelinjer som innehåller främmande kromosomfragment uppvisade en stor variation i proteinkvalitet, med linjer som innehöll både högre proteinkoncentration i kärnan och högre glutenstyrka jämfört med mätarsorten Dragon. Ett påfallande starkt gluten påträffades framför allt i vetelinjer som innehöll kromosomfragment av strandråg samt i vetelinjer som innehöll vissa kromosomer från råg. Hög proteinkoncentration i kärnan erhölls framför allt i vissa linjer som innehåller kromosom 1 från råg. Det unika vetematerialet som undersökts i detta projekt, har tagits fram genom korsningar mellan olika vetelinjer och rågvete samt andra närbesläktade gräs till vete, och materialet har tidigare visat sig innehålla unika resistensgener som för närvarande överförs till vete anpassade för odling i olika delar av världen. Resultaten från detta projekt indikerar att materialet även innehåller unika gener som påverkar proteinkvaliteten signifikant utöver att materialet innehåller resistensgener. Stora möjligheter finns därmed att använda materialet för förädling av unik bakningskvalitet, samt för at förstå grundläggande egenskaper hos proteinerna som påverkar bakningskvaliteten.

Phenotyping with proximal sensors allow high-precision measurements of plant traits both in the controlled conditions and in the field. In this work, using machine learning, an integrated analysis was done from the data obtained from spectroradiometer, infrared thermometer, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements to identify most predictive proxy measurements for studying Septoria tritici blotch (STB) disease of wheat. The random forest (RF) models for chlorosis and necrosis identified photosystem II quantum yield (QY) and vegetative indices (VIs) associated with the biochemical composition of leaves as the top predictive variables for identifying disease symptoms. The RF model for chlorosis was validated with a validation set (R2: 0.80) and in an independent test set (R2: 0.55). Based on the results, it can be concluded that the proxy measurements for photosystem II, chlorophyll content, carotenoid, and anthocyanin levels and leaf surface temperature can be successfully used to detect STB. Further validation of these results in the field will enable application of these predictive variables for detection of STB in the field.
