The crystal structure of a new superconductor UTe2has been investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction for the first time at the low temperature (LT) of 2.7 K, just above the superconducting transition temperature of ∼1.6 K, in order to clarify whether the orthorhombic structure of typeImmm(No. 71), reported for the room-temperature (RT) structure persists down to the superconducting phase and can be considered as a parent symmetry for the development of spin-triplet superconductivity. In contrast to the previously reported phase transition at about 100 K [Stöwe (1996).J. Solid State Chem.127, 202–210], our high-precision LT neutron diffraction data show that the body-centred RT symmetry is indeed maintained down to 2.7 K. No sign of a structural change from RT down to 2.7 K was observed. The most significant change depending on temperature was observed for the U ion position and the U–U distance along thecdirection, implying its potential importance as a magnetic interaction path. No magnetic order could be deduced from the neutron diffraction data refinement at 2.7 K, consistent with bulk magnetometry. Assuming normal thermal evolution of the lattice parameters, moderately large linear thermal expansion coefficients of about α = 2.8 (7) × 10−5 K−1are estimated.

Using the new polarized neutron diffraction (PND) setup at MLZ the spin reorientation transition in the magnetocaloric orthoferrite HoFeO3 was studied at different wavelength. The various experiments provided reproducible results demonstrating high reliability of the used setup. We show that during the phase transition at TSR=53 K in an external magnetic field applied along crystal c-axis, the ordered magnetic moment of the Fe sublattice rotates from the crystallographic direction b to a not just in the ab plane, but through z axis. This means that the applied field breaks the orthorhombic symmetry allowing some magnetization parallel to z within a short temperature region. Interestingly, this is the same temperature region where large magnetocaloric effect for HoFeO3 was previously reported. A general model of the magnetic structure of HoFeO3, unconstrained by the orthorhombic symmetry, would allow the magnitudes and directions of the moments on each of the 8 magnetic sublattices in the unit cell to be independent of one-another, leading to 24 independent magnetic parameters. PND measurements were used to determine the absolute sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the ab plane for the Fe magnetic sublattice at 65 K. DMI plays an important role in the energy balance of the system.

In the field of magnetoelectric coupling, especially via the spin-dependent metal-ligand d-p hybridization mechanism found in multiferroic Ba2MGe2O7 (M = Mn, Co), detailed knowledge of the microscopic structural parameters is essential, also for the theoretical modeling. In this article, we report a systematic structural study of Ba2MnGe2O7 single crystal under varying temperatures between 110 and 673 K using non-destructive in situ single crystal synchrotron radiation diffraction. The maximum entropy method (MEM) was applied to the X-ray diffraction data for the determination of the deformation in the electron density and the orbital hybridization between the 3d of Mn and 2p of O in the Mn-O bond. Within this entire temperature range, the structure was described in a single crystallographic space group P (4) over bar2(1)m and no structural phase transition has been detected. Interestingly, the forbidden reflections, which arise from multiple diffractions so-called "Renninger effect," were observed at all temperatures without any symmetry lowering. The changes in the structural parameters [bond-lengths, bond-angles, anisotropic displacement parameters, and electron density distributions (EDDs) of the atoms] with temperature are revealed, helping to understand some aspects comprising orbital hybridization in multiferroic Ba2MnGe2O7.

New actively shielded asymmetric vertical field split-coil superconducting magnet with maximal field of 8 T has been recently procured and implemented on the beam line POLI at Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ). The magnet is designed in order to facilitate the single crystal diffraction with polarised neutrons. In order to provide high neutron polarisation in the vicinity of the new strong magnet a dedicated compact-size solid-state supermirror bender polariser optimised for the short neutron wavelength on POLI has been built. A Mezei flipper, which had been previously developed for lower field, could be upgraded with additional guide fields in order to be used in combination with new polarizer and magnet. All components are discussed and the performance test for the entire setup is presented. High efficiency of the new polarised neutron diffraction setup on POLI is demonstrated. Polarized neutron diffraction experiments in the fields up to 8 T are now available at MLZ.

We report a spin-wave study on multiferroic ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoGe}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ under magnetic fields up to 12 T using low-energy inelastic neutron scattering. In-plane transverse $({T}_{1})$ spin-wave modes are highly dispersive along $(h00)$ and rather flat but strong in intensity along $(30l)$. In addition, two dispersive electromagnon modes have been observed around 3.5 meV. Dispersion of the out-of-plane transverse modes $({T}_{2})$ under fields reveals that the single-ion anisotropy constant decreases with increasing magnetic field, which is consistent with the linear spin-wave theory. Our results imply that the field-dependent single-ion anisotropy plays a crucial role in determining the characteristics of ${T}_{2}$ and electromagnon modes in the three-dimensional anisotropic spin-wave spectrum.

An investigation of the low-temperature magnetism of TmMgGaO${}_{4}$, a recently synthesized ``triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet,'' reveals an unconventional magnetic architecture that might arise in other similar rare-earth magnets.

Frustrated quasidoublets without time-reversal symmetry can host highly unconventional magnetic structures with continuously distributed order parameters even in a single-phase crystal. Here, we report the comprehensive thermodynamic and neutron diffraction investigation on the single crystal of TmMgGaO$_4$, which entails non-Kramers Tm$^{3+}$ ions arranged on a geometrically perfect triangular lattice. The crystal electric field (CEF) randomness caused by the site-mixing disorder of the nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ ions, merges two lowest-lying CEF singlets of Tm$^{3+}$ into a ground-state (GS) quasidoublet. Well below $T_c$ $\sim$ 0.7 K, a small fraction of the antiferromagnetically coupled Tm$^{3+}$ Ising quasidoublets with small inner gaps condense into two-dimensional (2D) up-up-down magnetic structures with continuously distributed order parameters, and give rise to the \emph{columnar} magnetic neutron reflections below $\mu_0H_c$ $\sim$ 2.6 T, with highly anisotropic correlation lengths, $\xi_{ab}$ $\geq$ 250$a$ in the triangular plane and $\xi_c$ $, Comment: Accepted in Physical Review X. The polarized single-crystal diffractometer POLI is the first neutron scattering instrument routinely using 3He spin filters both to produce and to analyse neutron polarization. The instrument, with a non-magnetic goniometer, was designed to perform two types of polarized neutron diffraction experiment: spherical neutron polarimetry, also known as full three-dimensional polarization analysis in zero magnetic field, and classical polarized neutron diffraction, also called the flipping-ratio (FR) method, in high applied magnetic fields. Reported here is the implementation of the FR setup for short-wavelength neutrons on POLI using a new high-T c superconducting magnet with a maximal field of 2.2 T. The complete setup consists of a 3He polarizer, a nutator, a Mezei-type flipper, guide fields and dedicated pole pieces, together with the magnet. Each component, as well as the whole setup, was numerically simulated, optimized, built and finally successfully tested under real experimental conditions on POLI. The measured polarized neutron spin transport efficiency is about 99% at different wavelengths, e.g. as short as 0.7 Å, and up to the maximal available field of the magnet. No further depolarization of the 3He cells due to stray fields of the magnet occurs. The additional use of the available 3He analyser allows uniaxial polarization analysis experiments in fields up to 1.2 T. The results of the first experiment on the field-dependent distribution of the trigonal antiferromagnetic domains in haematite (α-Fe2O3) are presented and compared with the literature data.
