Alternative Funding Programs (AFPs) in healthcare are becoming more prevalent, but they raise ethical and legal concerns. AFPs allow insurers to exclude certain specialty medications from their formularies, limiting options for patients who need them. Employers are also using AFPs to lower costs. When medications are excluded, patients are directed to third-party vendors who may mislead patient assistance programs (PAPs) by claiming the patient is uninsured.
