2. Perfect and Stable Hybrid Glasses from Strong and Fragile Metal-Organic Framework Liquids

Abstract

Hybrid glasses connect emerging fields of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the glass-formation, amorphization, and melting processes of these structurally diverse and chemically versatile systems. Most zeolites, including MOFs, amorphize around the glass transition, devitrifying and then melting at much higher temperatures. The relationship between the two processes has so far not been investigated. Herein we show how heating first results in a low density perfect glass, following an order-order transition, leading to a super-strong liquid of low fragility that dynamically controls MOF collapse. A subsequent order-disorder transition creates a high density liquid of greater fragility. After crystallization and melting, subsequent cooling results in a stable glass virtually identical to the high density phase. Furthermore, the wide-ranging melting temperatures of different MOFs suggest these can be differentiated by topology. 28. Structural characterization of the temperature dependence of C60-thin films on mica (001) by x-ray diffraction

Abstract

The growth and structural defects of C60 thin films on (001) mica are dependent on the substrate temperature. An increase in the substrate temperature produces a linear increase in the grain size in the films. Substrate temperature of 150 degrees Celsius yields perfectly oriented films exhibiting an out-of-plane mosaic spread of 0.2 degrees. The x-ray diffraction spectra of the substrate exhibits (hhh)-Bragg reflection peaks, indicating the absence of (311)-grain orientation in the films. The epitaxial orientation of C60 is enhanced by the increase in substrate temperature.

Abstract

In situ gelation of water-in-oil polymer emulsions is a key method to produce hydrogel particles. Although this approach is in principle ideal for encapsulating bioactive components such as cells, the oil phase can interfere with straightforward presentation of crosslinker molecules. Several approaches have been developed to induce in-emulsion gelation by exploiting the triggered generation or release of crosslinker molecules. However, these methods typically rely on photo- or acid-based reactions that are detrimental to cell survival and functioning. In this work, we demonstrate the diffusion-based supplementation of small molecules for the in-emulsion gelation of multiple tyramine-functionalized polymers via enzymatic crosslinking using a H2O2/oil nanoemulsion. This strategy is compatible with various emulsification techniques, thereby readily supporting the formation of monodisperse hydrogel particles spanning multiple length scales ranging from the nano- to the millimeter. As proof of principle, we leveraged droplet microfluidics in combination with the cytocompatible nature of enzymatic crosslinking to engineer hollow cell-laden hydrogel microcapsules that support the formation of viable and functional 3D microtissues. Abstract

We report the synthesis of a 2D-layered metal-organic framework incorporating weakly interacting chains designed to aid exfoliation of the layers into nanosheets. Dispersion of the nanosheets exposes labile metal-sites which are shown to exchange solvent molecules allowing the nanosheets to act as sensors in suspension.

Abstract

Deliverable D4.2 describes the Context Awareness and Activity Recognition system implemented as part of the research and development activities in tasks 4.1 (second part), 4.2, 4.3, 4.4. This deliverable includes both the released software system, available through WP4 code repository, as well as the present document. This document provides an up-to-date architectural view of the released system and provides a description of the implementation level details of the developed software. This includes both a specification of the software components, the description of the application programming interface implementing them as well as system deployment information, including hardware and software requirements. Further, it is provided a preliminary account of the experimental validation of the system components on data collected in the DOREMI laboratories and pilot site. A complete report on the experimental validation of the system will be provided in Deliverable D4.3 at M33.

Abstract

A new technique for the corrosion protection of lead in pipe organs is presented using plasma immersion implantation of nitrogen. A 20 nm surface layer protects against a massive acetic acid impact leading without protection to a strong etching effect which destroys the lead surface quality.
