Since its establishment in the 1980s as a local protest movement in Italy, Slow Food evolved into a global movement composed through countless local ‘grassroots’ activities intersecting with more ‘top-down’ umbrella orchestration and framing. This paper explores the many faces of this one-in-many movement by focusing on the circulation and variation of Slow Food ideas and practices across the world. The core argument is that these ideas and practices effectively capture and steer the manifold affective moments emerging from local and network activities. The affective–effective conversions are traced here by applying a semiotic-network approach to a large corpus of Slow Food websites. Thus adopting a novel approach and methodology of tracing the geographical development of a social movement, the paper reveals both grassroots and global patterns of change and diffusion, and zooms in on specific nodes, connections and practices that play a key role in the movement’s development. In doing so, we develop a research strategy that is better able to make sense of complex and non-linear processes of geographical diffusion-innovation.

Neoliberal austerity discourse is often positioned as an almost insurmountable barrier, its disciplinary power affecting even the most change-oriented citizen-initiatives existing today. Countering this, this paper highlights the transformative capacity of social movements in Thessaloniki. Drawing from Butler, Laclau and Mouffe, and Gibson-Graham we develop the notion of “communal performativity” both as an academic and as a practical concept to understand and build trajectories of socio-economic change. “Communal” denotes the drive of the movements’ participants to interconnect and (re)negotiate with a multiplicity of Others, curbing identity politics to articulate internal differences and Otherness. We see some hopeful signs of bridges being built towards shared trajectories of change that can be understood as different but concrete variations on the abstract counter-narrative of “breaking with neoliberalism”. Some of these variations challenge, others diversify neoliberal discourses and practices. 20 juli 2017

29 november 2016, Contains fulltext : 162915pub.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Slow Food (SF) is a global, grassroots movement aimed at enhancing and sustaining local food cultures and traditions worldwide. Since its establishment in the 1980s, Slow Food groups have emerged across the world and embedded in a wide range of different contexts. In this article, we explain how the movement, as a diverse whole, is being shaped by complex dynamics existing between grassroots flexibilities and emerging drives for movement coherence and harmonization. Unlike conventional studies on social movements, our approach helps one to understand transnational social movements as being simultaneously coherent and diverse bodies of collective action. Drawing on work in the fields of relational geography, assemblage theory and webometric research, we develop an analytical strategy that navigates and maps the entire Slow Food movement by exploring its ‘double articulation’ between the material-connective and ideational-expressive. Focusing on representations of this connectivity and articulation on the internet, we combine methodologies of computation research (webometrics) with more qualitative forms of (web) discourse analysis to achieve this. Our results point to the significance of particular networks and nodal points that support such double movements, each presenting core logistical channels of the movement's operations as well as points of relay of new ideas and practices. A network-based analysis of ‘double articulation’ thus shows how the co-evolution of ideas and material practices cascades into major trends without having to rely on a ‘grand', singular explanation of a movement's development.

Abstract

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is the prevalent mode of corporate governance to gain control over productive assets abroad. Control is achieved through the transfer of property rights to the foreign firm. Through FDI, companies can exploit their internal (so-called ownership-specific) advantages through combining them with location-specific advantages abroad, for example, market opportunities, resources, and local value chains. Another aim of FDI is to improve ownership-specific advantages by anchoring in foreign technological hot spots. The choice for the mode of governance depends on so-called internalization advantages, that is, the advantages of an in-house (acquisition) solution versus that of a market or contractual (network) solution. Over time, institutional improvements, including more advanced global regulatory frameworks for trading and transacting, have not only enabled more FDI but also the proliferation of other forms of cross-border business governance (networking, joint ventures, etc.). In addition to innovation in business organization, a key role is played here by global institutional players such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), World Trade Organization (WTO), and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and by the formation of macro-regions such as the European Union (EU). Economic geographical work has traditionally focused on the impact of FDI on host regions, on employment, linkages, and increasingly, on knowledge spillover, and (collaborative) innovation. From a more global perspective, the link between FDI and core-periphery patterns has been critically scrutinized. A core question is the role of FDI in the currently emerging ‘archipelago’ structure of the global economy. Another critical contribution focuses on the pervasive role of neoliberal regulation in promoting the interest of dominant firms and their home countries.

Item does not contain fulltext In this paper we explore the concept of circulation as a theoretical and methodological approach to study the emergence and development of social movements. The study focuses on the phenomenon that particular types of alternative practices (street paper sales, local food procurement, bartering and LETS) mushroom across the world, characterized by relational practices from 'local' to 'global' levels. We present a relational approach and methodology of circulation that examines the spatiality and temporality of collective action in a relational setting. In particular, we draw on two connected models of actor-network theory: the ecological model of translation addressing the relations between a heterogeneous range of interconnected actors on a macro-scale and the entrepreneurial model zooming in onto processes of local group-formation in multiple sites. This use of actor-network thinking allows us to highlight the political, social and material dimensions of the development of collective 'resistance' practices and the 'mushrooming' of social movements. The network perspective is complemented with relational work on (counter)hegemonic discourses. In particular this focuses on how the shaping and circulation of discursive practices is accompanied by the continuing juggling amongst different stories and accounts of what alternativity means and how they should be put into practice. Such a 'networked' approach to social movements is better able to address the structure agency dilemma and to overcome the problems associated with notions like 'sector', circuits of power (Clegg) or 'field' (Bourdieu). We will illustrate our argument by discussing two examples: the street paper movement and the slow food movement

Deze problemen vragen om een cultuuromslag in de ruimtelijke ordening. Een omslag van groeidenken naar transformatiedenken. Maar ook van kerktorenpolitiek naar integrale, regionale samenwerking. VAN LEEFBAARHEIDSDENKEN NAAR VITALITEITSDENKEN. Tot dusver zijn discussies over de impact van de krimpproblematiek op de ruimtelijke ordening vooral gevoerd in termen van ‘leefbaarheid’. Dat gaat vooral over voorzieningen. De overheid bedenkt wat goed is voor de gemeenschap en bepaalt welke voorzieningen daarbij horen. Daar moeten we vanaf. We moeten toe naar de kracht van de gemeenschap zelf en introduceren daarvoor de term ‘vitaliteit’: de situatie waarin een gemeenschap zélf de omstandigheden in haar dorp of wijk positief probeert te beïnvloeden. Kortom, het is voortaan niet langer de overheid die eenzijdig de voorwaarden bedenkt en bepaalt, maar de samenleving houdt zichzelf, in samenwerking met de overheid, in stand. PROVINCIALE ROL EN HOUDING. Het is cruciaal dat dit besef bij iedereen in Gelderland tussen de oren komt. In heel duidelijke communicatie over feiten en prognoses. De provincie kan dan werken aan het ‘krimpbestendig’ maken van beleid. Daarvoor is het wel nodig dat er binnen de bevolking en de gemeenschap urgentie wordt gevoeld. De provincie kan helpen bij het vormen van coalities die samen doelen stellen. Overheid, noch overige partijen kunnen dat alleen. Nog belangrijker is het dat er mogelijkheden komen om te experimenteren met oplossingen. Die ruimte moeten we elkaar laten. Het is wel zaak dat de provincie met duidelijke kaders aangeeft hoeveel ruimte er is om experimenten aan te gaan om de gezamenlijk gestelde doelen te bereiken. 48. Behavior adaptation for mobile robots via semantic map compositions of constraint-based controllers.

Abstract

Specifying and solving Constraint-based Optimization Problems (COP) has become a mainstream technology for advanced motion control of mobile robots. COP programming still requires expert knowledge to transform specific application context into the right configuration of the COP parameters (i.e., objective functions and constraints). The research contribution of this paper is a methodology to couple the context knowledge of application developers to the robot knowledge of control engineers, which, to our knowledge, has not yet been carried out. The former is offered a selected set of symbolic descriptions of the robots' capabilities (its so-called "behavior semantics") that are translated in control actions via "templates" in a "semantic map"; the latter contains the parameters that cover contextual dependencies in an application and robot vendor-independent way. The translation from semantics to control templates takes place in an "interaction layer" that contains 1) generic knowledge about robot motion capabilities (e.g., depending on the kinematic type of the robots), 2) spatial queries to extract relevant COP parameters from a semantic map (e.g., what is the impact of entering different types of "collision areas"), and 3) generic application knowledge (e.g., how the robots' behavior is impacted by priorities, emergency, safety, and prudence). This particular design of, and interplay between, the application, interaction, and control layers provides a structured, conceptually simple approach to advance the complexity of mobile robot applications. Abstract

Purpose: A preoperative estimate of the risk of malignancy for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) is important. The present study carries out an external validation of the Shin score in a European multicenter cohort., Methods: An observational multicenter European study from 2010 to 2015. All consecutive patients undergoing surgery for IPMN at 35 hospitals with histological-confirmed IPMN were included., Results: A total of 567 patients were included. The score was significantly associated with the presence of malignancy (p < 0.001). In all, 64% of the patients with benign IPMN had a Shin score < 3 and 57% of those with a diagnosis of malignancy had a score ≥ 3. The relative risk (RR) with a Shin score of 3 was 1.37 (95% CI: 1.07-1.77), with a sensitivity of 57.1% and specificity of 64.4%., Conclusion: Patients with a Shin score ≤ 1 should undergo surveillance, while patients with a score ≥ 4 should undergo surgery. Treatment of patients with Shin scores of 2 or 3 should be individualized because these scores cannot accurately predict malignancy of IPMNs. This score should not be the only criterion and should be applied in accordance with agreed clinical guidelines., (© 2022. A possible way to avoid this is parenchymal-sparing hepatectomy (PSHX) with vascular resection and reconstruction (HVRR). In this article, we aim to demonstrate the specific role of this technique in avoiding post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF)., Methods: A retrospective analysis of 10 patients who underwent HVRR was conducted. 99m Technetium-mebrofenin hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HBS) was used to predict the future liver remnant function (FLRF). Calculations were made for each patient to compare HVRR and major hepatectomy (with or without portal vein embolization)., Results: In our cohort, there was no perioperative mortality. Two patients suffered a Clavien-Dindo grade 3a complication and none had clinically significant PHLF. Estimated FLRF was significantly higher in HVRR compared to major hepatectomy after portal vein embolization ( p  < .005)., Conclusions: Instead of focusing on inducing liver remnant hypertrophy, preserving parenchyma through HVRR can be an interesting treatment strategy. It can be performed with an acceptable operative risk. Calculations of FLRF (using HBS) suggest that this approach is able to reduce the risk for PHLF and related morbidity or mortality.
