Abstract

A regular map is a surface together with an embedded graph, having properties similar to those of the surface and graph of a platonic solid. We analyze regular maps with reflection symmetry and a graph of density strictly exceeding 1/2, and we conclude that all regular maps of this type belong to a family of maps naturally defined on the Fermat curves x^n+y^n+z^n=0, excepting the one corresponding to the tetrahedron., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Background: Pre-operative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) rather than radiotherapy (RT) has resulted in fewer locoregional recurrences (LRRs), but no decrease in distant metastasis (DM) rate for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). In many countries, patients receive post-operative chemotherapy (pCT) to improve oncological outcomes. We investigated the value of pCT after pre-operative CRT in the RAPIDO trial. Patients and methods: Patients were randomised between experimental (short-course RT, chemotherapy and surgery) and standard-of-care treatment (CRT, surgery and pCT depending on hospital policy). In this substudy, we compared curatively resected patients from the standard-of-care group who received pCT (pCT+ group) with those who did not (pCT- group). Subsequently, patients from the pCT+ group who received at least 75% of the prescribed chemotherapy cycles (pCT >75% group) were compared with patients who did not receive pCT (pCT-/- group). By propensity score stratification (PSS), we adjusted for the following unbalanced confounders: age, clinical extramural vascular invasion, distance to the anal verge, ypT stage, ypN stage, residual tumour, serious adverse event (SAE) and/or readmission within 6 weeks after surgery and SAE related to pre-operative CRT. Cumulative probability of disease-free survival (DFS), DM, LRR and overall survival (OS) was analysed by Cox regression. Results: In total, 396/452 patients had a curative resection. The number of patients in the pCT+, pCT >75%, pCT- and pCT-/- groups was 184, 112, 154 and 149, respectively. The PSS-adjusted analyses for all endpoints demonstrated hazard ratios between approximately 0.7 and 0.8 (pCT+ versus pCT-), and 0.5 and 0.8 (pCT >75% versus pCT-/-). 10. School Leadership Effects Revisited: A Review of Empirical Studies Guided by Indirect-Effect Models

Abstract

Fourteen leadership effect studies that used indirect-effect models were quantitatively analysed to explore the most promising mediating variables. The results indicate that total effect sizes based on indirect-effect studies appear to be low, quite comparable to the results of some meta-analyses of direct-effect studies. As the earlier indirect-effect studies tended to include a broad range of mainly school organisational conditions as intermediary variables, more recent studies focus more sharply on instructional conditions. The results of the conceptual analysis and the quantitative research synthesis would seem to support conceptualising educational leadership as a detached and 'lean' kind of meta-control, which would make maximum use of the available substitutes and self-organisation offered by the school staff and school organisational structural provisions. The coupling of conceptual analysis and systematic review of studies driven by indirect-effect models provides a new perspective on leadership effectiveness.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn Europe, design for the durability of new reinforced concrete structures is currently based on a prescriptive approach. The design, execution (construction) and planned maintenance of a concrete structure have to lead to the intended level of safety and serviceability throughout its entire service life. This requires numeric models based on a sound scientific background of mechanistic understanding as the basis for design and management tools and for the further development of standards and regulations. Designers must understand the basic deterioration mechanisms and the potential types and rates of damage development. For example, different types of corrosion cause very different damage developments, some of which reduce structural safety. We propose that the next generation of service life models should either explicitly include the propagation period or implicitly include it by selecting an accepted probability of depassivation that reflects the type of corrosion and its structural implications.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia lacks standardized and adapted neuropsychological tests, which hampers their use in clinical practice. Recently, an Indonesian Neuropsychological Consortium has initiated the adaptation of ten internationally commonly used tests for use in Indonesia. Here, we report the analyses of the psychometric properties, including preliminary normative data, the reliability, the underlying cognitive constructs, and the effects of age and education on these constructs as validity indicators. Material/Methods: Four hundred ninety healthy adults living on Java Island participated in this study. All subjects completed the Indonesian Neuropsychological Test Battery (INTB) for diagnosis of various cognitive functions. The test-retest reliability was determined in a parallel study with fifty participants. Results: Underlying cognitive constructs were assessed with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed seven constructs that accounted for 62.84% of the total variance, and the goodness of fit of the model was good. ANOVA's showed significant effects of age on six constructs (i.e., speed of visuospatial information processing, auditory short-term and working memory, speed and inhibitory control, and verbal learning ability). Age effects were not found for executive internal language. All constructs showed effects of education, except for recall and verbal learning ability. Conclusions: Interestingly, as expected, not all constructs showed the same agedependent decline, and if present, all seem to be unique. It is concluded that the psychometric properties of the INTB justify their usage for the Indonesian population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

AbstractIn order to make non-linear finite element analyses applicable during assessments of the ultimate load capacity or the structural reliability of large reinforced concrete structures, there is need for an efficient solution strategy with a low modelling uncertainty. A solution strategy comprises choices regarding force equilibrium, kinematic compatibility and constitutive relations. This contribution demonstrates four important steps in the process of developing a proper solution strategy: (1) definition, (2) verification by numerical experiments, (3) validation by benchmark analyses and (4) demonstration of applicability. A complete solution strategy is presented in detail, including a fully triaxial material model for concrete, which was adapted to facilitate its implementation in a standard finite-element software. Insignificant sensitivity to finite element discretisation, load step size, iteration method and convergence tolerance were found by numerical experiments. A low modelling uncertainty, denoted by the ratio of experimental to predicted capacity, was found by comparing the results from a range of experiments to results from non-linear finite element predictions. 34. Literature review of modelling approaches for ASR in concrete: a new perspective

Abstract

AbstractThe assessment of concrete structures affected by alkali–silica reaction (ASR) is a complex problem due to the multiscale nature of this long-term phenomenon. The reaction starts within the concrete constituents and developed at aggregate level by inducing swelling and deterioration of concrete material, which eventually affect the capacity of the structure. Due to this multiscale nature of the phenomenon, the problem is studied by various researchers in numerous manners. In this paper, a literature review of the main modelling approaches for ASR in concrete is presented within a new perspective. The models are categorised on the basis of their input and output parameters, instead of adopting the classical classification on the base of the scale (e.g. micro, meso and macro). The main aim of the review is to understand to which extent the available models are able to describe the deteriorating impact induced by ASR in concrete material and if the approaches can ultimately be extended to structural analyses.

Abstract

The LPCVD of silicon oxynitride has been characterized and optimized using the Design of Experiments method. The data of a half factorial matrix were converted with multiple linear regression analysis into an adequate empirical model : it appeared to be possible to predict the process output parameters (e.g. deposition rate), when applying more or less random input parameters (e.g. process pressure). The method supplies a tool to optimize a process in an efficient way : the optimum settings, found for the silicon oxynitride process are : temperature 800°C, ramp ±8°C, pressure 400 mTorr, DCS flow 70 sccm, (N2O + NH3) / DCS = 3, NH3/ N2O= 0.18. Corresponding predicted output parameters are : deposition rate 14.2 Å/min., uniformity over the wafer ±2 % and the uniformity over the boat 0 %. The refractive index becomes 1.70 ± 0.01.

Abstract

Blood concentrations of cyclosporine A (CsA) 800 μg/l measured 2 h post-dosing, the C2 concentration, is necessary to obtain a maximal pharmacological effect and correlates well with transplant-related complications such as transplant rejection and toxicity. In an open crossover study CsA blood levels were measured during 24 h to generate a pharmacokinetic profile on days 1, 8 and 15 after starting CsA infusion in 21 haematopoietic allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients who were receiving intravenously CsA 3 mg/kg/day either by continuous infusion or by 2 h infusion given every 12 h. C2 levels after the 2 h infusion correlated better than C1 or C3 levels with the area under the concentration-time curve from 0 to 4 h (r2=0.62). C2 levels 800 μg/l were also achieved for 20 out of 24 (83%) of cases after the 2 h infusion of CsA without any increase of CsA-related toxicity but for only three of the 23 patients (13%) after continuous infusion. Abstract

This study reports the results of a multicenter study on memory complaints in 252 patients with epilepsy who presented with subjective complaints about memory problems in daily life. Memory complaints were measured with a standardized memory questionnaire (GKLE). The main purpose was to analyze the type of memory complaints and to examine the relationship between subjective complaints and several epilepsy-related factors. These include seizure type, lateralization and location of the focus, etiology, duration, age at onset, and antiepileptic medication. As expected patients experienced significantly more memory complaints. In particular, patients of older age and higher intelligence level complained more about their memory functioning. Although the clinical significance is marginal, neuroticism showed a significant relationship to the total complaint score. The total amount of subjective complaints is not related to the localization or lateralization of the epileptic disturbances. Patients with a longer duration of epilepsy complained significantly more about memory problems, especially about retrieving information from memory. All other epilepsy-related factors showed no relationship to memory complaints. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

46. Tissue reactions to epoxycrosslinked porcine heart valves posttreated with detergents or a dicarboxylic acid

Abstract

Calcification limits the longterm durability of xenograft glutaraldehyde GAcrosslinked heart valves. Previously, a study in rats showed that epoxycrosslinked heart valves reduced lymphocyte reactions to the same extent as the GAcrosslinked control and induced a similar foreignbody response and calcification reaction. The present study was aimed at reducing the occurrence of calcification of epoxycrosslinked tissue. Two modifications were carried out and their influence on cellular reactions and the extent of calcification after 8 weeks’ implantation in weanling rats was evaluated. First, epoxycrosslinked valves were posttreated with two detergents to remove cellular elements, phospholipids and small soluble proteins, known to act as nucleation sites for calcification. The second approach was to study the effect of the impaired balance between negatively and positively charged amino acids by an additional crosslinking step with a dicarboxylic acid. The detergent treatment resulted in a washedout appearance of especially the cusp tissue. With the dicarboxylic acid, both the cusps and the walls had a limited washedout appearance. The wall also demonstrated some detachment of the subendothelium. After implantation, both detergent and dicarboxylic acid posttreatment histologically resulted in reduced calcification at the edges of cusps and walls. However, total amounts of calcification, measured by atomic emission spectroscopy, were not significantly reduced. Data concerning the presence of lymphocytes varied slightly, but were in the same range as the GAcrosslinked control, i.e., clearly reduced compared with a noncrosslinked control. It is concluded that both the double detergent and the dicarboxylic acid posttreatment of epoxycrosslinked heart valve tissue do not represent a sound alternative in the fabrication of heart valve bioprostheses. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 50. Characterization and biocompatibility of epoxycrosslinked dermal sheep collagens

Abstract

Dermal sheep collagen DSC, which was crosslinked with 1,4butanediol diglycidyl ether BD by using four different conditions, was characterized and its biocompatibility was evaluated after subcutaneous implantation in rats. Crosslinking at pH 9.0 BD90 or with successive epoxy and carbodiimide steps BD45EN resulted in a large increase in the shrinkage temperature Ts in combination with a clear reduction in amines. Crosslinking at pH 4.5 BD45 increased the Tsof the material but hardly reduced the number of amines. Acylation BD45HAc showed the largest reduction in amines in combination with the lowest Ts. An evaluation of the implants showed that BD45, BD90, and BD45EN were biocompatible. A high influx of polymorphonuclear cells and macrophages was observed for BD45HAc, but this subsided at day 5. At week 6 the BD45 had completely degraded and BD45HAc was remarkably reduced in size, while BD45EN showed a clear size reduction of the outer DSC bundles; BD90 showed none of these features. This agreed with the observed degree of macrophage accumulation and giant cell formation. None of the materials calcified. For the purpose of soft tissue replacement, BD90 was defined as the material of choice because it combined biocompatibility, low cellular ingrowth, low biodegradation, and the absence of calcification with fibroblast ingrowth and new collagen formation. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
