Vanadium in silicon carbide (SiC) is emerging as an important candidate system for quantum technology due to its optical transitions in the telecom wavelength range. However, several key characteristics of this defect family including their spin relaxation lifetime (T1), charge state dynamics, and level structure are not fully understood. In this work, we determine the T1 of an ensemble of vanadium defects, demonstrating that it can be greatly enhanced at low temperature. We observe a large spin contrast exceeding 90% and long spin-relaxation times of up to 25s at 100mK, and of order 1s at 1.3K. These measurements are complemented by a characterization of the ensemble charge state dynamics. The stable electron spin furthermore enables high-resolution characterization of the systems' hyperfine level structure via two-photon magneto-spectroscopy. Over the past decade, a number of algorithms for full-field elastic strain estimation from neutron and X-ray measurements have been published. Many of the recently published algorithms rely on modelling the unknown strain field as a Gaussian Process (GP) - a probabilistic machine-learning technique. Thus far, GP-based algorithms have assumed a high degree of smoothness and continuity in the unknown strain field. In this paper, we propose three modifications to the GP approach to improve performance, primarily when this is not the case (e.g. for high-gradient or discontinuous fields); hyperparameter optimisation using k-fold cross-validation, a radial basis function approximation scheme, and gradient-based placement of these functions.

This paper presents a proof-of-concept demonstration of triaxial strain tomography from Bragg-edge neutron imaging within a three-dimensional sample. Bragg-edge neutron transmission can provide high-resolution images of the average through thickness strain within a polycrystalline material. This poses an associated rich tomography problem which seeks to reconstruct the full triaxial strain field from these images. The presented demonstration is an important step towards solving this problem, and towards a technique capable of studying the residual strain and stress within engineering components. A Gaussian process based approach is used that ensures the reconstruction satisfies equilibrium and known boundary conditions. This approach is demonstrated experimentally on a non-trivial steel sample with use of the RADEN instrument at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. Validation of the reconstruction is provided by comparison with conventional strain scans from the KOWARI constant-wavelength strain diffractometer at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation and simulations via finite element analysis.

Recently, a number of reconstruction algorithms have been presented for residual strain tomography from Bragg-edge neutron transmission measurements. In this paper, we examine whether strain tomography can also be achieved from diffraction measurements. We outline the proposed method and develop a suitable reconstruction algorithm. This technique is demonstrated in simulation and a proof-of-concept experiment is carried out where the strain field in an axisymmetric sample is reconstructed and validated against conventional diffraction strain scans.

We consider a method for neutron residual strain/stress analysis combining features of transmission strain tomography (e.g. through Braggs edge imaging) and neutron diffraction techniques. Analogous to transmission strain tomography, our approach observes integrals of strain along the path of a beam, however, rather than transmitted beams, we observe a diffracted beam. The practical feasibility of neutron diffraction tomography is demonstrated in case of a 2D axisymmetric sample where the reconstruction of the stress field is determined from the measurement of a strain profile. The reconstruction is compared to a set of measurements made using a traditional neutron stress scanning technique in order to validate the new method. Similar strain accuracy was achieved by the new technique within a reasonable measurement time. The practical and theoretical challenges regarding the technique are also discussed.

Recently, several algorithms for strain tomography from energy-resolved neutron transmission measurements have been proposed. These methods assume that the stress-free lattice spacing $d_0$ is a known constant limiting their application to the study of stresses generated by manufacturing and loading methods that do not alter this parameter. In this paper, we consider the more general problem of jointly reconstructing the strain and $d_0$ fields. A method for solving this inherently non-linear problem is presented that ensures the estimated strain field satisfies equilibrium and can include knowledge of boundary conditions. This method is tested on a simulated data set with realistic noise levels, demonstrating that it is possible to jointly reconstruct $d_0$ and the strain field., Comment: Journal article, 14 pages, 5 figures

Diffraction of high-energy X-rays produced at synchrotron sources can provide rapid strain measurements, with high spatial resolution, and good penetrating power. With an uncollimated diffracted beam, through thickness averages of strain can be measured using this technique, which poses an associated rich tomography problem. This paper proposes a Gaussian process (GP) model for three-dimensional strain fields satisfying static equilibrium and an accompanying algorithm for tomographic reconstruction of strain fields from high-energy X-ray diffraction. We present numerical evidence that this method can achieve triaxial strain tomography in three-dimensions using only a single axis of rotation. The method builds upon recent work where the GP approach was used to reconstruct two-dimensional strain fields from neutron based measurements. A demonstration is provided from simulated data, showing the method is capable of rejecting realistic levels of Gaussian noise.

This paper deals with the evaluation of double line integrals of the squared exponential covariance function. We propose a new approach in which the double integral is reduced to a single integral using the error function. This single integral is then computed with efficiently implemented numerical techniques. The performance is compared against existing state of the art methods and the results show superior properties in numerical robustness and accuracy per computation time.

Diffraction-based methods have become an invaluable tool for the detailed assessment of residual strain and stress within experimental mechanics. These methods typically measure a component of the average strain within a gauge volume. It is common place to treat these measurements as point measurements and to interpolate and extrapolate their values over the region of interest. Such interpolations are not guaranteed to satisfy the physical properties of equilibrium and applied loading conditions. In this paper, we provide a numerically robust algorithm for inferring two dimensional, biaxial strain fields over a region of interest from diffraction-based measurements that satisfies equilibrium and any known loading conditions. By correctly treating the measurements as gauge volume averages rather than point-wise the algorithm has better performance when large gauge volumes and subsequently shorter beam-times are used. This algorithm is demonstrated on simulation and experimental data and compared to natural neighbour interpolation with linear extrapolation and is shown to provide a more accurate strain field.

Several recent methods for tomographic reconstruction of stress and strain fields from Bragg-edge neutron strain images have been proposed in the literature. This paper presents an extension of a previously demonstrated approach based on Gaussian Process regression which enforces equilibrium in the method. This extension incorporates knowledge of boundary conditions, primarily boundary tractions, into the reconstruction process. This is shown to increase the rate of convergence and is more tolerant of systematic errors that may be present in experimental measurements. An exact expression for a central calculation in this method is also provided which avoids the need for the approximation scheme that was previously used. Convergence of this method for simulated data is compared to existing approaches and a reconstruction from experimental data is provided. Validation of the results to conventional constant wavelength strain measurements and comparison to prior methods shows a significant improvement.

Technological developments in high resolution time-of-flight neutron detectors have raised the prospect of tomographic reconstruction of elastic strain fields from Bragg-edge strain images. This approach holds the potential to provide a unique window into the full triaxial stress field within solid samples. While general tomographic reconstruction from these images has been shown to be ill-posed, an injective link between measurements and boundary deformations exists for systems subject to in situ applied loads in the absence of residual stress. Recent work has provided an algorithm to achieve tomographic reconstruction for this class of mechanical system. This letter details an experimental proof-of-concept for this algorithm involving the full reconstruction of a biaxial strain field within a non-trivial steel sample. This work was carried out on the RADEN energy resolved neutron imaging instrument within the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, with validation through Digital Image Correlation and constant wavelength neutron strain scans.

The uncertainty in the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction rate over the temperature range of 0.1 - 1.3 GK was previously determined to span ~4 orders of magnitude due to the uncertain location of two previously unobserved 3+ and 2+ resonances in the 4.7 - 4.8 MeV excitation region in 30S. Therefore, the abundances of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae, which are relevant for the identification of presolar grains of putative nova origin, were uncertain by a factor of 3. To investigate the level structure of 30S above the proton threshold (4394.9(7) keV), a charged-particle spectroscopy and an in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments were performed. Differential cross sections of the 32S(p,t)30S reaction were measured at 34.5 MeV. Distorted wave Born approximation calculations were performed to constrain the spin-parity assignments of the observed levels. An energy level scheme was deduced from gamma-gamma coincidence measurements using the 28Si(3He,n-gamma)30S reaction. Spin-parity assignments based on measurements of gamma-ray angular distributions and gamma-gamma directional correlation from oriented nuclei were made for most of the observed levels of 30S. As a result, the resonance energies corresponding to the excited states in 4.5 MeV - 6 MeV region, including the two astrophysically important states predicted previously, are measured with significantly better precision than before. The uncertainty in the rate of the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction is substantially reduced over the temperature range of interest. Finally, the influence of this rate on the abundance ratios of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae are obtained via 1D hydrodynamic nova simulations., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures
