Abstract Despite a 15% misplacement rate of screws in idiopathic scoliosis surgery, little is known about the relationship between pedicles and nerve structures in the entire thoracic curve. This study aimed to explore the spinal cord’s proximity to the pedicle wall at each thoracic vertebra in the entire thoracic curve, while considering different anatomical changes. Spinal cord to medial pedicle distances were measured on magnetic resonance imaging in 73 patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion with pedicle screw instrumentation. Associations with different variables were examined. A total of 51 patients (69.9%) showed a distance within 2 mm at the apex vertebra on the concave side, more than 50% had a distance within 2 mm in the next thoracic vertebra level above and below, and more than 25% two levels above and below. Weak correlations were found between proximity of the spinal cord at the apex vertebra and vertebra’s level and Cobb angle on the concave side (r = − 0.310, P = 0.008, r = 0.380, P = 0.001, respectively). These results emphasize the importance of thorough assessment when placing thoracic pedicle screws in idiopathic scoliosis patients. Further research is warranted to develop surgical strategies aimed at preventing potentially neurological complications resulting from screw misplacement.

BackgroundThe flexion relaxation phenomenon (FRP) is characterized by suddenly reduced paraspinal muscle activity during full flexion. Previous studies showed significant differences in FRP and flexion angles in chronic low back pain (cLBP) patients compared to individuals without back pain (no-BP). However, the relationship between FRP and flexion angles remains insufficiently understood in older populations. Thus, this study investigated the relationship between FRP and flexion angles concerning to the age and presence of cLBP.MethodsForty no-BP subjects (20m/20f; mean age 41.5 years) and thirty-eight cLBP patients (19m/19f; mean age 43.52 years) performed maximum full upper body flexion task. Electromyographic (EMG) measurements were conducted to assess the activity of lumbar erector spinae (ESL), thoracic erector spinae (EST), and multifidus (MF). Lumbar, thoracic, and pelvic angles at the onset (OnsetL/T/P) and offset of the FRP (OffsetL/T/P) and maximum trunk inclination (MaxL/T/P) were calculated. The FRP was evaluated using a flexion relaxation ratio (FRR).ResultscLBP patients showed smaller FRR in MF and right ESL compared to no-BP individuals (p < 0.05), while no differences were found in flexion angles between two groups. Subjects over 40 showed smaller FRR in MF and ESL, and smaller flexion angles on OffsetL and MaxL (p < 0.05). Age-related analysis in the cLBP group revealed that patients over 40, compared to younger ones, had smaller FRR in MF and ESL, and smaller values in all thoracic and lumbar flexion angles (p < 0.05). While in no-BP group, significant larger flexion angles in OnsetL and OffsetT (p < 0.05) were observed in participants over 40. Pain-related analysis in the older group revealed that the cLBP patients, compared to no-BP individuals, had smaller FRR in right MF and right ESL, and smaller values in all lumbar and thoracic flexion angles (p < 0.05), while in younger group, there were no significant pain-related differences in FRR, with larger values in all lumbar flexion angles (p < 0.05).ConclusionOur findings indicate a reduction or absence of FRP in cLBP patients compared to no-BP individuals, with age being a significant factor as those over 40 showed smaller FRP and flexion angles compared to younger individuals.

Abstract The Schober test is considered reliable in evaluating lumbar mobility and its impairment. Especially in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) identification of functional restriction is important. We aimed to investigate whether the 5 cm Schober cut-off provides a valid distinction between unrestricted and restricted mobility in participants with and without cLBP (18–65 years). cLBP is defined as LBP persisting for ≥ 12 weeks. We analyzed agreement between the Schober test with two measurement devices (Epionics SPINE®; Idiag M360®) and the influence of lumbar lordosis (LL) on their agreement. Also, the sensitivity and specificity of the Schober test was evaluated. Abstract Lumbo-sacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are frequent congenital variances of the spine and are associated with increased spinal degeneration. Nevertheless, there is a lack of data whether bony alterations associated with LSTV result in reduced segmental restoration of lordosis when performing ALIF. 58 patients with monosegmental stand-alone ALIF in the spinal segment between the 24th and 25th vertebra (L5/S1)/(L5/L6) where included. Of these, 17 patients had LSTV and were matched to a control population by age and sex. Pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, sagittal vertical axis, lumbar lordosis, segmental lordosis, disc height and depth were compared. Current clinical examination of low back pain (LBP) patients primarily relies on static clinical examinations, which rarely represent the dynamic postures patients adopt during daily activities. To gain an overview on the dynamic kinematics-kinetics changes over a day, the lumbar back kinematics of asymptomatic individuals and LBP patients were measured over 24 h, and the passively resisted bending and torsional moments were estimated. 208 asymptomatic subjects (115 females) and 116 LBP patients (71 females) were analysed. Compared to static upright standing, the mean lumbar lordosis of asymptomatic subjects drops significantly by 21° during everyday life (p < 0.01). Maximum bending moments of 44.0–50.6 Nm were estimated at the L2-L3. LBP patients showed significantly lower (p < 0.01) lumbar flattening during daily life of about 16°. Maximum bending moments of 27–52 Nm were found at the L3–L4. The initial static upright lumbar lordosis was significantly lower in LBP population (by 6°) resulting in almost similar average lumbar shapes during daily activities in both groups. The torsional movements were with 2.2° greatest in L1-L2 independent of sex (p = 0.19) and LBP (p = 0.54) with moments of 6–16 Nm. The lumbar profile and associated internal moments during daily life differ substantially from those recorded during clinical examinations. LBP patients demonstrates significantly lower lordosis at the snapshot assessment and significantly lower movement variations and internal moments during daily life. Only the dynamic long-term assessments unravelled a less flexed posture in LBP population. Apparently, such a reduced dynamic flexed posture indicates a compensatory habit for pain relief.

Abstract The assessment of spinal shape and mobility is of great importance for long-term therapy evaluation. As frequent radiation should be avoided, especially in children, non-invasive measurements have gained increasing importance. Their comparability between each other however stays elusive. Abstract Background The aim of this Pilot study was to investigate the cardiac surgical residents’ workload during different surgical teaching interventions and to compare their stress levels with other working time spent in the intensive care unit or normal ward. Methods The objective stress was assessed using two cardiac surgical residents’ heart rate variability (HRV) both during surgical activities (32 selected teaching operations (coronary artery bypass graft n = 26 and transcatheter aortic valve implantation n = 6), and during non-surgical periods. Heart rate, time and frequency domains as well as non-linear parameters were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results The parasympathetic activity was significantly reduced during the surgical phase, compared to the non-surgical phase: Mean RR (675.7 ms vs. 777.3 ms), RMSSD (23.1 ms vs. 34.0 ms) and pNN50 (4.7% vs. 10.6%). This indicates that the residents had a higher stress level during surgical activities in comparison to the non-surgical times. The evaluation of the Stress Index during the operations and outside the operating room (8.07 vs. 10.6) and the parasympathetic nervous system index (− 1.75 to − 0.91) as well as the sympathetic nervous system index (1.84 vs. 0.65) confirm the higher stress level during surgery. This can be seen too used the FFT Analysis with higher intraoperative LF/HF ratio (6.7 vs. 3.8). Conclusion HRV proved to be a good, objective method of identifying stress among physicians both in and outside the operating room. Our results show that residents are exposed to high psychological workloads during surgical activities, especially as the operating surgeon.

Musculoskeletal disorders of the cervical spine have increased considerably in recent times. To understand the effects of various biomechanical factors, quantifying the differences in disc loads, motion, and muscle force/activity is necessary. The kinematic, kinetic, or muscle response may vary in a neutral posture due to interindividual differences in segmental mass, cervical disc stiffness, and muscle strength. Therefore, our study aimed to develop an inverse dynamic model of the cervical spine, estimate the differences in disc loads, translations, intradiscal pressure, and muscle force/activity in a neutral posture and compare these results with data available in the literature. A head–neck complex with nine segments (head, C1–T1) was developed with joints having three rotational and three translational degrees of freedom, 517 nonlinear ligament fibers, and 258 muscle fascicles. A sensitivity analysis was performed to calculate the effect of segmental mass (5th to 95th percentile), translational disc stiffness (0.5–1.5), and muscle strength (0.5–1.5) on the cervical disc loads (C2–C3 to C7–T1), disc translations, intradiscal pressure, and muscle force/activity in a neutral posture. In addition, two axial external load conditions (0 and 40 N) were also considered on the head. The estimated intradiscal pressures (0.2–0.56 MPa) at 0 N axial load were comparable to in vivo measurements found in the literature, whereas at 40 N, the values were 0.39–0.93 MPa. With increased segmental mass (5th to 95th), the disc loads, translations, and muscle forces/activities increased to 69% at 0 N and 34% at 40 N axial load. Low back pain (LBP) could be associated with a reduced lumbar mobility. For the evaluation of lumbar flexibility, parameters such as finger-floor distance (FFD) are historically established. However, the extent of the correlation of FFD to lumbar flexibility or other involved joint kinematics such as pelvic motion, as well as the influence of LBP, is not yet known. We conducted a prospective cross-sectional observation study with 523 participants included (167 with LBP > 12 weeks, 356 asymptomatic). LBP-participants were matched for sex, age, height, and body-mass-index with an asymptomatic control cohort, resulting in two cohorts with 120 participants each. The FFD in maximal trunk flexion was measured. The Epionics-SPINE measurement-system was used to evaluate the pelvic and lumbar Range-of-Flexion (RoF), and the correlation of FFD to pelvic- and lumbar-RoF was evaluated. In an asymptomatic sub-cohort of 12 participants, we examined the individual correlation of FFD to pelvic- and lumbar-RoF under gradual trunk flexion. Participants with LBP showed a significantly reduced pelvic-RoF (p < 0.001) and lumbar-RoF (p < 0.001) as well as an increased FFD (p < 0.001) compared to the asymptomatic control cohort. Asymptomatic participants exhibited a weak correlation of FFD to pelvic-RoF and lumbar-RoF (r < 0.500). LBP patients revealed a moderate correlation of FFD to pelvic-RoF (male: p < 0.001, r = −0.653, female: p < 0.001, r = −0.649) and sex-dependent to lumbar-RoF (male: p < 0.001, r = −0.604, female: p = 0.012, r = −0.256). In the sub-cohort of 12 participants, gradual trunk flexion showed a strong correlation of FFD to pelvic-RoF (p < 0.001, r = −0.895) but a moderate correlation to lumbar-RoF (p < 0.001, r = −0.602). The differences in FFD in an individual patient, assuming consistent hip function, may be attributed partially to the differences in lumbar flexibility. However, the absolute values of FFD do not qualify as a measure for lumbar mobility. Rather, using validated non-invasive measurement devices should be considered.

BackgroundLumbo-sacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are one of the most common congenital variances of the spine. They are associated with an increased frequency of degeneration in the cranial adjacent segment. Hypermobility and concomitant increased loads are discussed as a possible reason for segmental degeneration. We therefore examined the lumbar and segmental motion distribution in patients with LSTV with flexion-extension radiographs.MethodsA retrospective study of 51 patients with osteochondrosis L5/S1 with flexion and extension radiographs was performed. Of these, 17 patients had LSTV and were matched 1:1 for age and sex with patients without LSTV out of the collective of the remaining 34 patients. The lumbar and segmental range of motion (RoM) by segmental lordosis angle and the segmental wedge angle were determined. Normal distribution of parameters was observed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov-test. Parametric data were compared by paired T-test. Non-parametric data were compared by Wilcoxon-rank-sum-test. Correlations were observed using Spearman's Rank correlation coefficient. A p-value ResultsPatients with LSTV had mean age of 52.2±10.9, control group of 48.9±10.3. Both groups included 7 females and 10 males. Patients with LSTV presented with reduced RoM of the lumbar spine (LSTV 37.3°±19.2°, control 52.1°±20.5°, p = 0.065), however effects were statistically insignificant. LSTV significantly decreased segmental RoM in the transitional segment (LSTV 1.8°±2.7°, control 6.7°±6.0°, p = 0.003). Lumbar motion distribution differed significantly; while RoM was decreased in the transitional segment, (LSTV 5.7%, control 16.2%, p = 0.002), the distribution of lumbar motion to the cranial adjacent segment was increased (LSTV 30.7%, control 21.6%, p = 0.007).ConclusionPatients with LSTV show a reduced RoM in the transitional segment and a significantly increased motion distribution to the cranial adjacent segment in flexion-extension radiographs. The increased proportion of mobility in the cranial adjacent segment possibly explain the higher rates of degeneration within the segment.

Manual material handling (MMH) is considered as one of the main contributors to low back pain. While males traditionally perform MMH tasks, recently the number of females who undertake these physically-demanding activities is also increasing. To evaluate the risk of mechanical injuries, the majority of previous studies have estimated spinal forces using different modeling approaches that mostly focus on male individuals. Notable sex-dependent differences have, however, been reported in torso muscle strength and anatomy, segmental mass distribution, as well as lifting strategy during MMH. Therefore, this study aimed to use sex-specific models to estimate lumbar spinal and muscle forces during static MHH tasks in 10 healthy males and 10 females. Motion-capture, surface electromyographic from select trunk muscles, and ground reaction force data were simultaneously collected while subjects performed twelve symmetric and asymmetric static lifting (10 kg) tasks. AnyBody Modeling System was used to develop base-models (subject-specific segmental length, muscle architecture, and kinematics data) for both sexes. For females, female-specific models were also developed by taking into account for the female’s muscle physiological cross-sectional areas, segmental mass distributions, and body fat percentage. Males showed higher absolute L5-S1 compressive and shear loads as compared to both female base-models (25.3% compressive and 14% shear) and female-specific models (41% compressive and 23.6% shear). When the predicted spine loads were normalized to subjects’ body weight, however, female base-models showed larger loads (9% compressive and 16.2% shear on average), and female-specific models showed 2.4% smaller and 9.4% larger loads than males. Females showed larger forces in oblique abdominal muscles during both symmetric and asymmetric lifting tasks, while males had larger back extensor muscle forces during symmetric lifting tasks. A stronger correlation between measured and predicted muscle activities was found in females than males. Results indicate that female-specific characteristics affect the predicted spinal loads and must be considered in musculoskeletal models. Neglecting sex-specific parameters in these models could lead to the overestimation of spinal loads in females.

Abstract Despite the huge importance of friction in regulating movement in all natural and technological processes, the mechanisms underlying dissipation at a sliding contact are still a matter of debate. Attempts to explain the dependence of measured frictional losses at nanoscale contacts on the electronic degrees of freedom of the surrounding materials have so far been controversial. Here, it is proposed that friction can be explained by considering the damping of stick‐slip pulses in a sliding contact. Based on friction force microscopy studies of La(1−x)SrxMnO3 films at the ferromagnetic‐metallic to a paramagnetic‐polaronic conductor phase transition, it is confirmed that the sliding contact generates thermally‐activated slip pulses in the nanoscale contact, and argued that these are damped by direct coupling into the phonon bath. Electron‐phonon coupling leads to the formation of Jahn–Teller polarons and to a clear increase in friction in the high‐temperature phase. There is neither evidence for direct electronic drag on the atomic force microscope tip nor any indication of contributions from electrostatic forces. This intuitive scenario, that friction is governed by the damping of surface vibrational excitations, provides a basis for reconciling controversies in literature studies as well as suggesting possible tactics for controlling friction.

Correction of the overall coronal and/or sagittal plane deformities is one of the main predictors of successful spinal surgery. In routine clinical practice, spinal alignment is assessed using several spinal and pelvic parameters, such as pelvic incidence and tilt, sacral slope, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and sagittal vertical axis. Standard values have been defined for all these parameters, and the formulas of correction have been set for determining the surgical strategy. However, several factors can potentially bias these formulas. First, all standard values are measured using conventional plain radiographs and are, therefore, prone to bias. The radiologist, measuring surgeon, and patient are possible confounding influencing factors. Second, spino-pelvic compensatory effects and biomechanically relevant structures for the patient’s posture, including ligaments, tendons, and muscles, have received minimal consideration in the literature. Therefore, even in cases of appropriately planned deformity correction surgeries, complications, revision rates, and surgical outcomes significantly vary. This study aimed to illustrate the current clinical weaknesses of the assessment of spinal alignment and the importance of holistically approaching the musculoskeletal system for any spinal deformity surgery. We believe that our detailed insights regarding spinal, sagittal, and coronal alignments as well as the considerations of an individual’s spinal balance will contribute toward improvement in routine patient care.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19 disease has emerged expeditiously in the world and has been declared pandemic since March 2020, by World Health Organization (WHO). The destructive effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection are increased among the patients with pre-existing chronic conditions and, in particular, this review focuses on patients with underlying cardiovascular complications. The expression pattern and potential functions of SARS-CoV-2 binding receptors and the attributes of SARS-CoV-2 virus tropism in a physio-pathological state of heart and blood vessel are precisely described. Of note, the atheroprotective role of ACE2 receptors is reviewed. A detailed description of the possible detrimental role of SARS-CoV-2 infection in terms of vascular leakage, including endothelial glycocalyx dysfunction and bradykinin 1 receptor stimulation is concisely stated. Furthermore, the potential molecular mechanisms underlying SARS-CoV-2 induced clot formation in association with host defense components, including activation of FXIIa, complements and platelets, endothelial dysfunction, immune cell responses with cytokine-mediated action are well elaborated. Moreover, a brief clinical update on patient with COVID-19 disease with underlying cardiovascular complications and those who had new onset of cardiovascular complications post-COVID-19 disease was also discussed. Taken together, this review provides an overview of the mechanistic aspects of SARS-CoV-2 induced devastating effects, in vital organs such as the heart and vessels.

Abstract. Introduction:. Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a major cause of disability; early diagnosis and stratification of care remain challenges. Objectives:. This article describes the development of a screening tool for the 1-year prognosis of patients with high chronic LBP risk (risk stratification index) and for treatment allocation according to treatment-modifiable yellow flag indicators (risk prevention indices, RPI-S). Methods:. Screening tools were derived from a multicentre longitudinal study (n = 1071, age >18, intermittent LBP). The greatest prognostic predictors of 4 flag domains (“pain,” “distress,” “social-environment,” “medical care-environment”) were determined using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis. Internal validity and prognosis error were evaluated after 1-year follow-up. Receiver operating characteristic curves for discrimination (area under the curve) and cutoff values were determined. Results:. The risk stratification index identified persons with increased risk of chronic LBP and accurately estimated expected pain intensity and disability on the Pain Grade Questionnaire (0–100 points) up to 1 year later with an average prognosis error of 15 points. In addition, 3-risk classes were discerned with an accuracy of area under the curve = 0.74 (95% confidence interval 0.63–0.85). The RPI-S also distinguished persons with potentially modifiable prognostic indicators from 4 flag domains and stratified allocation to biopsychosocial treatments accordingly. Conclusion:. The screening tools, developed in compliance with the PROGRESS and TRIPOD statements, revealed good validation and prognostic strength. These tools improve on existing screening tools because of their utility for secondary preventions, incorporation of exercise effect modifiers, exact pain estimations, and personalized allocation to multimodal treatments.

Development and maintenance of secondary lymphoid organs such as lymph nodes and spleen essentially depend on lymphotoxin β-receptor (LTβR) signaling. It is unclear, however, by which molecular mechanism their size is limited. Here, we investigate whether the LTβR pathway is also growth suppressing. By using splenic tissue transplantation it is possible to analyze a potential contribution of LTβR signaling inside and outside of the implanted tissue. We show that LTβR signaling within the endogenous spleen and within non-splenic tissues both significantly suppressed the regeneration of implanted splenic tissue. The suppressive activity positively correlated with the total number of LTβR expressing cells in the animal (regenerate weights of 115 ± 8 mg in LTβR deficient recipients and of 12 ± 9 mg in wild-type recipients), affected also developed splenic tissue, and was induced but not executed via LTβR signaling. Two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis and subsequent mass spectrometry of stromal splenic tissue was applied to screen for potential factors mediating the LTβR dependent suppressive activity. Thus, LTβR dependent growth suppression is involved in regulating the size of secondary lymphoid organs, and might be therapeutically used to eradicate tertiary lymphoid tissues during autoimmune diseases.

Activities with high spinal loads should be avoided by patients with back problems. Awareness about these activities and knowledge of the associated loads are important for the proper design and pre-clinical testing of spinal implants. The loads on an instrumented vertebral body replacement have been telemetrically measured for approximately 1000 combinations of activities and parameters in 5 patients over a period up to 65 months postoperatively. A database containing, among others, extreme values for load components in more than 13,500 datasets was searched for 10 activities that cause the highest resultant force, bending moment, torsional moment, or shear force in an anatomical direction. The following activities caused high resultant forces: lifting a weight from the ground, forward elevation of straight arms with a weight in hands, moving a weight laterally in front of the body with hanging arms, changing the body position, staircase walking, tying shoes, and upper body flexion. All activities have in common that the center of mass of the upper body was moved anteriorly. Forces up to 1650 N were measured for these activities of daily life. However, there was a large intra- and inter-individual variation in the implant loads for the various activities depending on how exercises were performed. Measured shear forces were usually higher in the posterior direction than in the anterior direction. Activities with high resultant forces usually caused high values of other load components.

BACKGROUND:The understanding of the individual shape and mobility of the lumbar spine are key factors for the prevention and treatment of low back pain. The influence of age and sex on the total lumbar lordosis and the range of motion as well as on different lumbar sub-regions (lower, middle and upper lordosis) in asymptomatic subjects still merits discussion, since it is essential for patient-specific treatment and evidence-based distinction between painful degenerative pathologies and asymptomatic aging. METHODS AND FINDINGS:A novel non-invasive measuring system was used to assess the total and local lumbar shape and its mobility of 323 asymptomatic volunteers (age: 20-75 yrs; BMI 50 yrs) compared to the youngest age cohort (20-29 yrs). Locally, these decreases mostly occurred in the middle part of the lordosis and less towards the lumbo-sacral and thoraco-lumbar transitions. The sex only affected the RoE. CONCLUSIONS:During aging, the lower lumbar spine retains its lordosis and mobility, whereas the middle part flattens and becomes less mobile. These findings lay the ground for a better understanding of the incidence of level- and age-dependent spinal disorders, and may have important implications for the clinical long-term success of different surgical interventions.

Cycling on an ergometer is an effective exercise for improving fitness. However, people with back problems or previous spinal surgery are often not aware of whether cycling could be harmful for them. To date, little information exists about spinal loads during cycling. A telemeterized vertebral body replacement allows in vivo measurement of implant loads during the activities of daily living. Five patients with a severe compression fracture of a lumbar vertebral body received these implants. During one measurement session, four of the participants exercised on a bicycle ergometer at various power levels. As the power level increased, the maximum resultant force and the difference between the maximum and minimum force (force range) during each pedal revolution increased. The average maximum-force increases between the two power levels 25 and 85 W were 73, 84, 225 and 75 N for the four patients. The corresponding increases in the force range during a pedal revolution were 84, 98, 166 and 101 N. There were large variations in the measured forces between the patients and also within the same patient, especially for high power levels. In two patients, the maximum forces during high-power cycling were higher than the forces during walking measured on the same day. Therefore, the authors conclude that patients with back problems should not cycle at high power levels shortly after surgery as a precaution.

PURPOSE: Currently, no studies exist, which attest the suitability of the ovine intervertebral disc as a biomechanical in vivo model for preclinical tests of new therapeutic strategies of the human disc. By measuring the intradiscal pressure in vivo, the current study attempts to characterize an essential biomechanical parameter to provide a more comprehensive physiological understanding of the ovine intervertebral disc. METHODS: Intradiscal pressure (IDP) was measured for 24 hours within the discs L2-L3 and L4-L5 via a piezo-resistive pressure sensor in one merino sheep. The data were divided into an activity and a recovery phase and the corresponding average pressures for both phases were determined. Additionally, IDPs for different static and dynamic activities were analyzed and juxtaposed to human data published previously. After sacrificing the sheep, the forces corresponding to the measured IDPs were examined ex vivo in an axial compression test. RESULTS: The temporal patterns of IDP where pressure decreased during activity and increased during rest were comparable between humans and sheep. However, large differences were observed for different dynamic activities such as standing up or walking. Here, IDPs averaged 3.73 MPa and 1.60 MPa respectively, approximately two to four times higher in the ovine disc compared to human. These IDPs correspond to lower ex vivo derived axial compressive forces for the ovine disc in comparison to the human disc. For activity and rest, average ovine forces were 130 N and 58 N, compared to human forces of 400-600 N and 100 N, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In vivo IDPs were found to be higher in the ovine than in the human disc. In contrast, axial forces derived ex vivo were markedly lower in comparison to humans. Both should be considered in future preclinical tests of intradiscal therapies using the sheep. The techniques used in the current study may serve as a protocol for measuring IDP in a variety of large animal models.
