Abstract

International audience; During amplified live music performance, the positions of sound sources rarely coincide with the positions of their related visual sources. Yet, several studies have suggested that audiovisual spatial coherence could improve the experience of the audience. In the present experiment, sound engineers had to produce two different mixes for several sequences extracted from concert videos: one freestyle mix where they could spatialize the sound sources at their pleasure, and one spatially-constrained mix, where the sound sources had to be reproduced at the same azimuth as the original positions of the related visual sources. A subjective evaluation revealed that the spatially-constrained mixes were preferred when the image was displayed, although the freestyle mixes were preferred when the image was not displayed.

Abstract

Photogeneration of carriers was measured at 633 nm in a series of polymer composites based on polystyrene, doped with a triphenyldiamine derivative as hole transport molecule and C[sub 60] as sensitizer. Light absorption and generation of mobile carriers was achieved through the charge-transfer (CT) complex formed between the hole transport molecule and the sensitizer. We discuss the influence of the ionization potential of the hole-transport molecule on the photogeneration efficiency of the CT complex it forms with the sensitizer C[sub 60]. Photogeneration efficiency of unity at an applied electric field of 55 V/μm is found in one composite. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: Infants from multiple pregnancies have higher rates of preterm birth, stillbirth and neonatal death and differences in multiple birth rates (MBR) exist between countries. We aimed to describe differences in MBR in Europe and to investigate the impact of these differences on adverse perinatal outcomes at a population level. Methods: We used national aggregate birth data on multiple pregnancies, maternal age, gestational age (GA), stillbirth and neonatal death collected in the Euro-Peristat project (29 countries in 2010, N = 5 074 643 births). We also used European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) data on assisted conception and single embryo transfer (SET). The impact of MBR on outcomes was studied using meta-analysis techniques with randomeffects models to derive pooled risk ratios (pRR) overall and for four groups of country defined by their MBR. We computed population attributable risks (PAR) for these groups. Results: In 2010, the average MBR was 16.8 per 1000 women giving birth, ranging from 9.1 (Romania) to 26.5 (Cyprus). Abstract

6 pages; International audience; Few psychoacoustic studies have been carried out about sound related to stereoscopic movies, and even less have tried to compare the effects of 2D and 3D video playback on the perception of soundtracks. In the present study 8 audio-visual sequences were presented in a theater to 44 subjects, in their non-stereoscopic version (2D) and their stereoscopic version (s-3D). For each presentation, subjects had to judge to what extent the 5.1 sound mix sounded frontal or “surround,” in order to verify whether stereoscopy could have an influence on the perception of the front/rear balance of ambience sound. Results showed that the influence of stereoscopy was weak—for two sequences out of eight, subjects perceived the soundtrack as more frontal when the sequence was projected in its s-3D version. For the other sequences, the influence of stereoscopy was not significant.

48. European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC): quality indicators of outpatient antibiotic use

Abstract

Background Indicators to measure health care quality are increasingly being developed and used both by health care professionals and policymakers. In the context of increasing antimicrobial resistance, we aimed to develop valid quality indicators for outpatient antibiotic use, producible on the basis of present ambulatory care (AC) data within ESAC. ESAC is an international network of surveillance systems, aiming to collect comparable and reliable data on antibiotic consumption in Europe, granted by DG/SANCO of the European Commission. Methods Thirty-four countries joined ESAC. In accordance with the ATC/DDD methodology (WHO, 2005) data on use of systemic antibiotics (J01) were collected for the period 1997–2004. For more information on the ESAC methodology, visit www.ua.ac.be/ESAC. In September 2005, 27 experts from 15 countries participating in a European Science Foundation workshop proposed a set of 24 indicators based on ESAC AC data, and subsequently scored their relevance to ‘reducing antimicrobial resistance’, ‘patient health benefit’, ‘cost-effectiveness’, and ‘public health policymaking’ using a 9 point Likert scale. The scores were processed according to the UCLA-RAND appropriateness method to assess the indicators’ validity. Results Twenty-two participants scored. Twelve indicators were rated as relevant to both ‘reducing antimicrobial resistance’ and ‘public health policymaking’ and can be considered as a valid set. For example, in 2004 the values for the indicator ‘total outpatient J01use in DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day (DID)’ ranged from 9.2 DID in Russia to 33.4 DID in Greece. The ratio of the consumption of broad to the consumption of narrow spectrum penicillins, cephalosporins, and macrolides {; ; ; ; J01[CR þ DC þ DD þ (F-FA01)]/J01(CE þ DB þ FA01)}; ; ; ; ranged from 0.1 in Sweden to 50.6 in Italy. The index of seasonal variation of quinolone consumption (J01M) taking into account their use in DID ranged from 0.00 in Greece and Hungary to 0.65 in Italy. Conclusions The subset of 12 valid quality indicators can be used to describe the quality of outpatient antibiotic use in Europe. The indicator values allow individual countries to position themselves and to define their own benchmark.

Abstract

Objectives: ESAC, European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption, granted by DG/SANCO of the European Commission, is an international network of surveillance systems, aiming to collect comparable and reliable data on antibiotic consumption in Europe. Thirty-four countries have joined the second phase of the ESAC project (2004– 2007), including all 25 EU countries and 4 current applicant countries. Methods: Outpatient and hospital antibiotic use for 2003 were collected, using the ATC/DDD methodology, version 2004. Results were expressed as DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day (DID). Detailed information on the sources of antibiotic use data can be found at the ESAC website (www.ua.ac.be/ESAC). Of the 34 participating countries 21, 19 and 2 were able to deliver outpatient, hospital and total data, resp., for 2003. In view of the expected change of DDD for parenteral co-amoxicillin, a pilot study on the pattern of consumption of antibiotics with multiple DDDs was conducted, based on data subdivided by route of administration. Results: Outpatient antibiotic use varied with a factor of 3.2 between the countries with the lowest and highest consumption, c.q. still the Netherlands (9.8 DID) and for the first time Greece (31.4 DID). Consumption in France decreased by 7.1% the year after their first national campaign. A similar reduction was seen in Belgium ()7.6%) after the first Belgian campaign. Hospital antibiotic use ranged between 1.4 DID in Norway and 3.6 DID in France. Nine substances with multiple DDDs were identified within the J01 ATC group: amoxicillin and enzyme inhibitor, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, clindamycin, fosfomycin are available in oral and parenteral form, tobramycin in inhalatory and parenteral form, while DDDs for erythromycin and methenamine differ according to their chemical salts. Specifically consumption of parenteral co- amoxicillin was substantial in 4 out of 10 countries, which were able to deliver detailed data. Conclusion: ESAC data underpin the success of two national campaigns on antibiotic prescribing (Belgium and France). An introduction or change of DDD for a specific form of any antibiotic can substantially influence the profile of antibiotic consumption in some countries. Thus the ESAC data collection protocol shall be adjusted to allow us to control for these changes retrospectively, by collecting data at a product presentation level.
