1. Machine Learning for Reducing Noise in RF Control Signals at Industrial Accelerators

Abstract

Industrial particle accelerators typically operate in dirtier environments than research accelerators, leading to increased noise in RF and electronic systems. Furthermore, given that industrial accelerators are mass produced, less attention is given to optimizing the performance of individual systems. As a result, industrial accelerators tend to underperform their own hardware capabilities. Improving signal processing for these machines will improve cost and time margins for deployment, helping to meet the growing demand for accelerators for medical sterilization, food irradiation, cancer treatment, and imaging. Our work focuses on using machine learning techniques to reduce noise in RF signals used for pulse-to-pulse feedback in industrial accelerators. Abstract

Topological magnetism has sparked an unprecedented age in quantum technologies. Marked by twisted spin structures with exotic dynamical modes, topological magnets have motivated a new generation of spintronic devices which transcend the limits of conventional semiconductor-based electronics. While existing material probes have biased studies and device conceptualizations for thin samples in two dimensions, advancements in three-dimensional probing techniques using beams of neutrons, are transforming our understanding of topological and emergent physics to reimagine spintronic devices. Here, we review recent neutron scattering breakthroughs which harness quantum degrees of freedom to enable three-dimensional topological investigations of quantum materials. We discuss applications of structured and tomographic neutron scattering techniques to topological magnets, with particular emphasis on magnetic skyrmion systems and their inspired three-dimensional logic device infrastructures through novel multi-bit encoding and control schemes. SANS-based dynamic visualizations and coherent manipulations of three-dimensional topological qubits are proposed using electric field controls of depth-dependant helicities and spin-orbit tuning of the neutron beam. Together, these investigations uncover a new world of three-dimensional topological physics which enhances spintronic devices through a novel set of structures, dynamics, and controls, unique to three-dimensional systems., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Neutron interferometry has played a distinctive role in fundamental science and characterization of materials. Moir\'e neutron interferometers are candidate next-generation instruments: they offer microscopy-like magnification of the signal, enabling direct camera recording of interference patterns across the full neutron wavelength spectrum. Here we demonstrate the extension of phase-grating moir\'e interferometry to two-dimensional geometries. Our fork-dislocation phase gratings reveal phase singularities in the moir\'e pattern, and we explore orthogonal moir\'e patterns with two-dimensional phase-gratings. Our measurements of phase topologies and gravitationally induced phase shifts are in good agreement with theory. These techniques can be implemented in existing neutron instruments to advance interferometric analyses of emerging materials and precision measurements of fundamental constants.

Abstract

Abstract

This work describes the LLRF and control system in use for a novel accelerator structure developed for a compact design operating in C-band developed by SLAC, with collaboration from RadiaBeam and RadiaSoft. This design is a pulsed RF/pulsed beam system that only provides minimal monitoring for control of each two-cavity pair. Available signals include only a forward and reflected signal for each pair; such a design requires careful consideration of calibration and power-on routines, as well an understanding of how to correct for disturbances caused by the entire RF signal chain, including a new SSA, klystron, and distribution system. An AMD Xilinx RF-SoC with a separate supervisory computer is the LLRF system core, with on-board pulse-to-pulse feedback corrections. This work presents the current status of the project, as well as obstacles and manufacturing plans from the viewpoint of developing for larger-volume manufacturing. Abstract

Phase-grating moire interferometers (PGMIs) have emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of neutron interferometry, enabling the use of a polychromatic beam and manifesting interference patterns that can be directly imaged by existing neutron cameras. However, the modeling of the various PGMI configurations is limited to cumbersome numerical calculations and backward propagation models which often do not enable one to explore the setup parameters. Here we generalize the Fresnel scaling theorem to introduce a k-space model for PGMI setups illuminated by a cone beam, thus enabling an intuitive forward propagation model for a wide range of parameters. The interference manifested by a PGMI is shown to be a special case of the Talbot effect, and the optimal fringe visibility is shown to occur at the moire location of the Talbot distances. We derive analytical expressions for the contrast and the propagating intensity profiles in various conditions, and analyze the behaviour of the dark-field imaging signal when considering sample characterization. The model's predictions are compared to experimental measurements and good agreement is found between them. Lastly, we propose and experimentally verify a method to recover contrast at typically inaccessible PGMI autocorrelation lengths. The presented work provides a toolbox for analyzing and understanding existing PGMI setups and their future applications, for example extensions to two-dimensional PGMIs and characterization of samples with non-trivial structures.

7. Three-Dimensional Neutron Far-Field Tomography of a Bulk Skyrmion Lattice

Abstract

Skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures thought to nucleate and annihilate on points of vanishing magnetization, called Bloch points. However, owing to a lack of bulk techniques, experimental visualizations of skyrmion lattices and their stabilization through defects in three-dimensions remain elusive. Here, we present a tomographic algorithm applied to a Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ skyrmion lattice host, processing multi-projection small angle neutron scattering measurements to generate mean scattering feature reconstructions (MSFR) of the bulk spin textures. Digital phantoms validated the algorithm; reconstructions of the sample show a disordered skyrmion lattice with a topological saturation of 63~\%, exhibiting three-dimensional topological transitions through two different emergent (anti)monopole defect pathways with densities of 147~$\mu$m$^{-3}$ and 21~$\mu \mathrm{m}^{-3}$ for branching and segmentation events, respectively. Abstract

Methods of preparation and analysis of structured waves of light, electrons, and atoms have been advancing rapidly. Despite the proven power of neutrons for material characterization and studies of fundamental physics, neutron science has not been able to fully integrate such techniques due to small transverse coherence lengths, the relatively poor resolution of spatial detectors, and low fluence rates. Here, we demonstrate methods that are practical with the existing technologies, and show the experimental achievement of neutron helical wavefronts that carry well-defined orbital angular momentum (OAM) values. We discuss possible applications and extensions to spin-orbit correlations and material characterization techniques.

Abstract

Neutrons have emerged as a unique probe at the forefront of modern material science, unrivaled in their penetrating abilities. A major challenge stems from the fact that neutron optical devices are limited to refractive indices on the order of $n\approx 1 \pm 10^{-5}$. By exploiting advances in precision manufacturing, we have designed and constructed a micro-meter period triangular grating with a high aspect ratio of $14.3$. The manufacturing quality is demonstrated with white-light interferometric data and microscope imaging. Neutron scattering experiment results are presented, showing agreement to refraction modelling. The capabilities of neutron Fresnel lenses based on this design are contrasted to existing neutron focusing techniques and the path separation of a prism-based neutron interferometer is estimated.

Abstract

Underlying disorder in skyrmion materials may both inhibit and facilitate skyrmion reorientations and changes in topology. The identification of these disorder-induced topologically active regimes is critical to realizing robust skyrmion spintronic implementations, yet few studies exist for disordered bulk samples. Here, we employ small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and micromagnetic simulations to examine the influence of skyrmion order on skyrmion lattice formation, transition, and reorientation dynamics across the phase space of a disordered polycrystalline Co$_{8}$Zn$_{8}$Mn$_{4}$ bulk sample. Our measurements reveal a new disordered-to-ordered skyrmion square lattice transition pathway characterized by the novel promotion of four-fold order in SANS and accompanied by a change in topology of the system, reinforced through micromagnetic simulations. Pinning responses are observed to dominate skyrmion dynamics in the metastable triangular lattice phase, enhancing skyrmion stabilization through a remarkable and previously undetected skyrmion memory effect which reproduces previous ordering processes and persists in zero field. These results uncover the cooperative interplay of anisotropy and disorder in skyrmion formation and restructuring dynamics, establishing new tunable pathways for skyrmion manipulation., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, Version 2 showing micromagnetic simulations that reinforce a new disordered-to-ordered square lattice skyrmion transition pathway which entails a change in topological charge. Abstract

Topologically non trivial spin textures host great promise for future spintronic applications. Skyrmions in particular are of burgeoning interest owing to their nanometric size, topological protection, and high mobility via ultra-low current densities. It has been previously reported through magnetic susceptibility, microscopy, and scattering techniques that Co$_{8}$Zn$_{8}$Mn$_{4}$ forms an above room temperature triangular skyrmion lattice. Here we report the synthesis procedure and characterization of a polycrystalline Co$_{8}$Zn$_{8}$Mn$_{4}$ bulk sample. We employ powder x-ray diffraction, backscatter Laue diffraction, and neutron diffraction as characterization tools of the crystallinity of the samples, while magnetic susceptibility and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) measurements are performed to study the skyrmion phase. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show a dip anomaly in the magnetization curves which persists over a range of approximately 305 K- 315 K. SANS measurements reveal a rotationally disordered polydomain skymrion lattice. Applying a recently developed symmetry-breaking magnetic field sequence, we were able to orient and order the previously jammed state to yield the prototypical hexagonal diffraction patterns, with secondary diffraction rings., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We show that for a simple graph $G$, $c'(G)\leq\Delta(G)+2$ where $c'(G)$ is the choice index (or edge-list chromatic number) of $G$, and $\Delta(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. As a simple corollary of this result, we show that the total chromatic number $\chi_T(G)$ of a simple graph satisfies the inequality $\chi_T(G)\leq\ \Delta(G)+4$ and the total choice number $c_T(G)$ also satisfies this inequality. We also relate these bounds to the Hall index and the Hall condition index of a simple graph, and to the total Hall number and the total Hall condition number of a simple graph.

Abstract

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Colorado East River Community Observatory (ER) in the Upper Colorado River Basin was established in 2015 as a representative mountainous, snow-dominated watershed to study hydrobiogeochemical responses to hydrological perturbations in headwater systems. The ER is characterized by steep elevation, geologic, hydrologic and vegetation gradients along floodplain, montane, subalpine, and alpine life zones, which makes it an ideal location for researchers to understand how different mountain subsystems contribute to overall watershed behaviour. The ER has both long-term and spatially-extensive observations and experimental campaigns carried out by the Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (SFA), led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and researchers from over 30 organizations who conduct cross-disciplinary process-based investigations and modelling of watershed behaviour. The heterogeneous data generated at the ER include hydrological, genomic, biogeochemical, climate, vegetation, geological, and remote sensing data, which combined with model inputs and outputs comprise a collection of datasets and value-added products within a mountainous watershed that span multiple spatiotemporal scales, compartments, and life zones. Within 5 years of collection, these datasets have revealed insights into numerous aspects of watershed function such as factors influencing snow accumulation and melt timing, water balance partitioning, and impacts of floodplain biogeochemistry and hillslope ecohydrology on riverine geochemical exports. Data generated by the SFA are managed and curated through its Data Management Framework. The SFA has an open data policy, and over 70 ER datasets are publicly available through relevant data repositories. A public interactive map of data collection sites run by the SFA is available to inform the broader community about SFA field activities. Here, we describe the ER and the SFA measurement network, present the public data collection generated by the SFA and partner institutions, and highlight the value of collecting multidisciplinary multiscale measurements in representative catchment observatories.

Abstract

The MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA) is a dedicated observatory of four 0.7m robotic telescopes fiber-fed to a KiwiSpec spectrograph. The MINERVA mission is to discover super-Earths in the habitable zones of nearby stars. This can be accomplished with MINERVA's unique combination of high precision and high cadence over long time periods. In this work, we detail changes to the MINERVA facility that have occurred since our previous paper. We then describe MINERVA's robotic control software, the process by which we perform 1D spectral extraction, and our forward modeling Doppler pipeline. In the process of improving our forward modeling procedure, we found that our spectrograph's intrinsic instrumental profile is stable for at least nine months. Because of that, we characterized our instrumental profile with a time-independent, cubic spline function based on the profile in the cross dispersion direction, with which we achieved a radial velocity precision similar to using a conventional "sum-of-Gaussians" instrumental profile: 1.8 m s$^{-1}$ over 1.5 months on the RV standard star HD 122064. Therefore, we conclude that the instrumental profile need not be perfectly accurate as long as it is stable. In addition, we observed 51 Peg and our results are consistent with the literature, confirming our spectrograph and Doppler pipeline are producing accurate and precise radial velocities., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PASP, Peer-Reviewed and Accepted

Abstract

The growth in scientific data volumes has resulted in a need to scale up processing and analysis pipelines using High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. These workflows need interactive, reproducible analytics at scale. The Jupyter platform provides core capabilities for interactivity but was not designed for HPC systems. In this paper, we outline our efforts that bring together core technologies based on the Jupyter Platform to create interactive, reproducible analytics at scale on HPC systems. Our work is grounded in a real world science use case-applying geophysical simulations and inversions for imaging the subsurface. Our core platform addresses three key areas of the scientific analysis workflow-reproducibility, scalability, and interactivity. We describe our implemention of a system, using Binder, Science Capsule, and Dask software. We demonstrate the use of this software to run our use case and interactively visualize real-Time streams of HDF5 data.

Abstract

The U.S. Department of Energy's Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (SFA), centered in the East River, Colorado, generates diverse datasets including hydrological, geological, geochemical, geophysical, ecological, microbiological and remote sensing data. The project has deployed extensive field infrastructure involving hundreds of sensors that measure highly diverse phenomena (e.g. stream and groundwater hydrology, water quality, soil moisture, weather) across the watershed. Data from the sensor network are telemetered and automatically ingested into a queryable database. The data are subsequently quality checked, integrated with the United States Geological Survey's stream monitoring network using a custom data integration broker, and published to a portal with interactive visualizations. The resulting data products are used in a variety of scientific modeling and analytical efforts. This paper describes the SFA's end-to-end infrastructure and services that support the generation of integrated datasets from a watershed sensor network. The development and maintenance of this infrastructure, presents a suite of challenges from practical field logistics to complex data processing, which are addressed through various solutions. In particular, the SFA adopts a holistic view for data collection, assessment and integration, which dramatically improves the products generated, and enables a co-design approach wherein data collection is informed by model results and vice-versa.

30. ScienceSearch: Enabling search through automatic metadata generation

Abstract

Scientific facilities are increasingly generating and handling large amounts of data from experiments and simulations. Next-generation scientific discoveries rely on insights derived from data, especially across domain boundaries. Search capabilities are critical to enable scientists to discover datasets of interest. However, scientific datasets often lack the signals or metadata required for effective searches. Thus, we need formalized methods and systems to automatically annotate scientific datasets from the data and its surrounding context. Additionally, a search infrastructure needs to account for the scale and rate of application data volumes. In this paper, we present ScienceSearch, a system infrastructure that uses machine learning techniques to capture and learn the knowledge, context, and surrounding artifacts from data to generate metadata and enable search. Our current implementation is focused on a dataset from the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM), an electron microscopy facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory sponsored by the Department of Energy which supports hundreds of users and stores millions of micrographs. In this paper, we describe a) our search infrastructure and model, b) methods for generating metadata using machine learning techniques, and c) optimizations to improve search latency, and deployment on an HPC system. We demonstrate that ScienceSearch is capable of producing valid metadata for NCEM's dataset and providing low-latency good quality search results over a scientific dataset.

Abstract

The microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-0448 was observed by Spitzer and lay within the tidal radius of the globular cluster NGC 6558. The event had moderate magnification and was intensively observed, hence it had the potential to probe the distribution of planets in globular clusters. We measure the proper motion of NGC 6558 ($\mu_{\rm cl}$(N,E) = (+0.36+-0.10, +1.42+-0.10) mas/yr) as well as the source and show that the lens is not a cluster member. Even though this particular event does not probe the distribution of planets in globular clusters, other potential cluster lens events can be verified using our methodology. Additionally, we find that microlens parallax measured using OGLE photometry is consistent with the value found based on the light curve displacement between Earth and Spitzer., Comment: ApJ submitted, 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tabels

Novel strategies are needed to target the health of postpartum women, who face numerous competing demands. This survey study of 553 postpartum women found 90% want access to a range of health information via social networking sites from reputable professionals, with Instagram (71%) the preferred platform. Delivery of health information to postpartum women via health organisation social networking sites could deliver cost savings and health benefits for postpartum women.

Abstract

We present the first global geospace simulation to reproduce auroral giant undulations (GUs). To identify their magnetospheric drivers, we employ the MAGE (Multiscale Atmosphere‐Geospace Environment) model in a case study of a geomagnetic storm for which there were spacecraft‐ and ground‐based observations of GUs. The model reproduces the spatial and temporal scales of the GUs as well as the presence of duskside subauroral polarization streams (SAPS) and plasmapause undulations. Based on our modeling, we are able to identify the magnetospheric drivers of GUs as mesoscale ring current injections which, after drifting westward, create inverted regions of flux‐tube entropy (FTE) and subsequent interchange instability. Outward‐protruding interchange fingers disrupt shielding of the inner magnetosphere, creating longitudinally localized ripples in magnetospheric convection equatorward of the magnetospheric instability, which structure the plasmapause and duskside diffuse precipitation. While not causal, SAPS and plasmapause undulations are a consequence of the unstable magnetospheric configuration. Plain Language Summary: The visually dazzling display of the aurora during active periods is caused primarily by the precipitation of energetic electrons from the magnetosphere into the ionosphere. The auroral oval plays host to a variety of morphological features, or auroral forms, that are a reflection of magnetospheric processes and therefore a powerful tool for understanding the cross‐scale processes that bind together different geospace domains. Unlocking that power, however, requires an understanding of how magnetospheric processes are reflected in the aurora. Despite decades of study, that understanding has remained elusive, primarily due to limited in situ measurements and uncertainty in the magnetic mapping connecting them to the ionosphere. Only recently have new global geospace models emerged that can provide this understanding. In this letter we identify the magnetospheric driver of auroral giant undulations (GUs), wave‐like trains of undulations that form on the equatorward edge of the diffuse aurora with typical spatial scales of 100 km. We show that GUs are the consequence of a "buoyancy imbalance" formed during the buildup of the ring current and the subsequent disruption of the ionospheric current systems that typically shield the inner magnetosphere.
