We present VIRAC2, a catalogue of positions, proper motions, parallaxes and $Z$, $Y$, $J$, $H$, and $K_s$ near-infrared photometric time series of 545 346 537 unique stars. The catalogue is based on a point spread function fitting reduction of nearly a decade of VISTA VVV and VVVX images, which cover $560~{\rm deg}^2$ of the Southern Galactic plane and bulge. We develop some model theory of multi-linear forms, generalizing Granger in the bi-linear case. In particular, after proving a quantifier elimination result, we show that for an NIP field K, the theory of infinite dimensional non-degenerate alternating n-linear spaces over K is strictly n-dependent; and it is NSOP1 if K is. This relies on a new Composition Lemma for functions of arbitrary arity and NIP relations (which in turn relies on certain higher arity generalizations of Sauer-Shelah lemma). Laser diode injection-locking is a commonly used method to amplify laser light, while preserving its spectral properties. Fluctuations in the environmental conditions can cause injection-locking to fail, especially when operating with low seed powers or with a swept seed frequency. We present a method inspired by the H\"ansch-Couillaud scheme to monitor and actively stabilize the conditions required for injection-locking a laser diode. Using only a few optical components, our scheme can run continuously in the background and is modulation-free. We demonstrate its efficacy by showing its robustness to large fluctuations in diode temperature, seed frequency and power, effectively extending the reliable operating range and stability over time.

The infall of the LMC into the Milky Way's halo impacts the distribution of stars and dark matter in our Galaxy. Mapping the observational consequences of this encounter can inform us about the properties of both galaxies, details of their interaction, and possibly even distinguish between different dark matter models. N-body simulations predict large-scale density asymmetries in the Galactic halo both in baryonic and dark matter due to the passage of the LMC, with the overdensity directly trailing its current orbit through the Southern hemisphere known as the wake. Using the VIRCAM and DECam instruments, we collected wide-field deep near-infrared and optical photometry in four fields chosen to cover the region of the sky expected to span most of the predicted density contrast of the wake. We identify more than 400 stars comprising two different tracers, near main sequence turn-off stars and red giants, that map the distant halo between $\sim 60$ - $100$ kpc, and use them to derive stellar halo densities as a function of position in the sky and Galactocentric radius. We detect (1) a break in the radial density profile of halo stars at 70 kpc that has not been seen in halo studies done from the North, and (2) a clear halo overdensity that starts also at 70 kpc and exhibits a density contrast that increases steadily when moving across the sky into the predicted current location of the LMC wake. If identifying this overdensity with the LMC wake, the peak density contrast we measure is more pronounced than in all available models of the LMC infall, which would indicate the need for a more massive LMC and/or with a different orbit than presently favored. Photoluminescence (PL) under continuous illumination is commonly employed to assess voltage losses in solar energy conversion materials. However, the early temporal evolution of these losses remains poorly understood. Therefore, we extend the methodology to time-resolved PL, introducing the concepts of geminate PL, doping PL, and sibling PL to quantify the transient chemical potential of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and key optoelectronic properties. Analyzing the initial PL amplitudes reveals hot charge carrier separation for around 100 nm and is likely limited by the grain size of the triple cation perovskite. The following PL decay is caused by the diffusive separation of non-excitonic geminate pairs and time-resolves a fundamental yet often overlooked energy loss by increasing entropy. For triple-cation halide perovskite, we measure a "geminate correlation energy" of up to 90 meV, persisting for ~ten nanoseconds. This energy is unutilized in standard solar cells and is considered lost in the Shockley-Queisser model. Therefore, this geminate energy could substantially enhance the device's efficiency, particularly under maximum power point and low-illumination conditions., Comment: 16 pages (+ 16 pages SI), 4 figures (+ 5 figures SI)

Simulating chemistry is likely to be among the earliest applications of quantum computing. However, existing digital quantum algorithms for chemical simulation require many logical qubits and gates, placing practical applications beyond existing technology. Here, we use an analog approach to carry out the first quantum simulations of chemical reactions. In particular, we simulate photoinduced non-adiabatic dynamics, one of the most challenging classes of problems in quantum chemistry because they involve strong coupling and entanglement between electronic and nuclear motions. We use a mixed-qudit-boson (MQB) analog simulator, which encodes information in both the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom of a trapped ion. We demonstrate its programmability and versatility by simulating the dynamics of three different molecules as well as open-system dynamics in the condensed phase, all with the same quantum resources. Our approach requires orders of magnitude fewer resources than equivalent digital quantum simulations, demonstrating the potential of analog quantum simulators for near-term simulations of complex chemical reactions.

The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures (+ appendix). A quadruply lensed source, J125856.3-031944, has been discovered using the DELVE survey and WISE W1 - W2 colors. Followup direct imaging carried out with the MPIA 2.2 m and the Baade 6.5 m telescopes is analyzed, as is spectroscopy from the 2.5 m Nordic Optical Telescope. The lensed image configuration is kite-like, with the faintest image 2 magnitudes fainter than the other three. Redward of 6000 AA that image is badly blended with the lensing galaxy, which is elongated along the symmetry axis of the kite. Magellan direct imaging carried out in Sloan g permits better deblending. As the lensed image configuration is nearly circular, simple models give individual magnifications of at least 25 for the 3 brighter images. The source's narrow emission lines and low intrinsic luminosity qualify it as a type 2 AGN., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to AJ, comments welcome

Lithium niobate (LNO) and lithium tantalate (LTO) see widespread use in fundamental research and commercial technologies reaching from electronics over classical optics to integrated quantum communication. In recent years, the mixed crystal system lithium niobate tantalate (LNT) allows for the dedicate engineering of material properties by combining the advantages of the two parental materials LNO and LTO. Vibrational spectroscopies such as Raman spectroscopy or (Fourier transform) infrared spectroscopy are vital techniques to provide detailed insight into the material properties, which is central to the analysis and optimization of devices. In this work, we present a joint experimental-theoretical approach allowing to unambiguously assign the spectral features in the LNT material family through both Raman and IR spectroscopy, as well as to provide an in-depth explanation for the observed scattering efficiencies based on first-principles calculations. The phononic contribution to the static dielectric tensor is calculated from the experimental and theoretical data using the generalized Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation and compared with the results of the first-principles calculations. The joint methodology can be readily expanded to other materials and serves, e.g., as the basis for studying the role of point defects or doping.

Data-based inference of directed interactions in complex dynamical systems is a problem common to many disciplines of science. In this work, we study networks of spatially separate dynamical entities, which could represent physical systems that interact with each other by reciprocal or nonreciprocal, instantaneous or time-delayed interactions. We present a simple approach that combines Markov state models with directed information-theoretical measures for causal inference that can accurately infer the underlying interactions from noisy time series of the dynamical system states alone. Remarkably, this is possible despite the built-in simplification of a Markov assumption and the choice of a very coarse discretization at the level of probability estimation. Our test systems are an Ising chain with nonreciprocal coupling imposed by local driving of a single spin, and a system of delay-coupled linear stochastic processes. Stepping away from physical systems, the approach infers cause-effect relationships, or more generally, the direction of mutual or one-way influence. Rapid advances in quantum computing technology lead to an increasing need for software simulators that enable both algorithm design and the validation of results obtained from quantum hardware. This includes calculations that aim at probing regimes of quantum advantage, where a quantum computer outperforms a classical computer in the same task. High performance computing (HPC) platforms play a crucial role as today's quantum devices already reach beyond the limits of what powerful workstations can model, but a systematic evaluation of the individual performance of the many offered simulation packages is lacking so far. In this Technical Review, we benchmark several software packages capable of simulating quantum dynamics with a special focus on HPC capabilities. We develop a containerized toolchain for benchmarking a large set of simulation packages on a local HPC cluster using different parallelisation capabilities, and compare the performance and system size-scaling for three paradigmatic quantum computing tasks.
