1. Operation of the CESR-TA vertical beam size monitor at $E_{\rm b}$=4 GeV

Abstract

We describe operation of the CESR-TA vertical beam size monitor (xBSM) with $e^\pm$ beams with $E_{\rm b}$=4 GeV. The xBSM measures vertical beam size by imaging synchrotron radiation x-rays through an optical element onto a detector array of 32 InGaAs photodiodes with 50 $\mu$m pitch. The device has previously been successfully used to measure vertical beam sizes of 10-100 $\mu$m on a bunch-by-bunch, turn-by-turn basis at $e^\pm$ beam energies of $\sim$2 GeV and source magnetic fields below 2.8 kG, for which the detector required calibration for incident x-rays of 1-5 keV. At $E_{\rm b}=4.0$ GeV and $B$=4.5 kG, however, the incident synchrotron radiation spectrum extends to $\sim$20 keV, requiring calibration of detector response in that regime. Such a calibration is described and then used to analyze data taken with several different thicknesses of filters in front of the detector. We obtain a relative precision of better than 4% on beam size measurement from 15-100 $\mu$m over several different ranges of x-ray energy, including both 1-12 keV and 6-17 keV. The response of an identical detector, but tilted vertically by 60$^\circ$ in order to increase magnfication without a longer beamline, is measured and shown to improve x-ray detection above 4 keV without compromising sensitivity to beam size. Abstract

X-rays produced by a hard-bend magnet pass through a single- or multiple-slit (coded aperture) optical element onto a detector. Abstract

Utilizing the full CLEO-c data sample of 818 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data taken at the $\psi(3770)$ resonance, we update our measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of charged and neutral $D$ mesons. We previously reportedresults from subsets of these data. Using a double tag technique we obtain branching fractions for three $D^0$ and six $D^+$ modes, including the reference branching fractions $\mathcal{B} (D^0\to K^-\pi^+)=(3.934 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.061)\%$ and $\mathcal{B} (D^+ \to K^- \pi^+\pi^+)=(9.224 \pm 0.059 \pm 0.157)\%$. The uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In these measurements we include the effects of final-state radiation by allowing for additional unobserved photons in the final state, and the systematic errors include our estimates of the uncertainties of these effects. Furthermore, using an independent measurement of the luminosity, we obtain the cross sections $\sigma(e^+e^-\to D^0\overline{D}{}^0)=(3.607\pm 0.017 \pm 0.056) \ \mathrm{nb}$ and $\sigma(e^+e^-\to D^+D^-)=(2.882\pm 0.018 \pm 0.042) \ \mathrm{nb}$ at a center of mass energy, $E_\mathrm{cm} = 3774 \pm 1$ MeV., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, and 6 tables. Abstract

We describe the construction and operation of an x-ray beam size monitor (xBSM), a device measuring $e^+$ and $e^-$ beam sizes in the CESR-TA storage ring using synchrotron radiation. The device can measure vertical beam sizes of $10-100~\mu$m on a turn-by-turn, bunch-by-bunch basis at $e^\pm$ beam energies of $\sim2~$GeV. At such beam energies the xBSM images x-rays of $\epsilon\approx$1-10$~$keV ($\lambda\approx 0.1-1$ nm) that emerge from a hard-bend magnet through a single- or multiple-slit (coded aperture) optical element onto an array of 32 InGaAs photodiodes with 50$~\mu$m pitch. Beamlines and detectors are entirely in-vacuum, enabling single-shot beam size measurement down to below 0.1$~$mA ($2.5\times10^9$ particles) per bunch and inter-bunch spacing of as little as 4$~$ns. At $E_{\rm b}=2.1 $GeV, systematic precision of $\sim 1~\mu$m is achieved for a beam size of $\sim12~\mu$m; this is expected to scale as $\propto 1/\sigma_{\rm b}$ and $\propto 1/E_{\rm b}$. Achieving this precision requires comprehensive alignment and calibration of the detector, optical elements, and x-ray beam. Abstract

The branching fractions of Ds meson decays serve to normalize many measurements of processes involving charm quarks. Using 586 pb^-1 of e+ e- collisions recorded at a center of mass energy of 4.17 GeV, we determine absolute branching fractions for 13 Ds decays in 16 reconstructed final states with a double tag technique. In particular we make a precise measurement of the branching fraction B(Ds -> K- K+ pi+) = (5.55 +- 0.14 +- 0.13)%, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic respectively. We find a significantly reduced value of B(Ds -> pi+ pi0 eta') compared to the world average, and our results bring the inclusively and exclusively measured values of B(Ds -> eta' X)$ into agreement. We also search for CP-violating asymmetries in Ds decays and measure the cross-section of e+ e- -> Ds* Ds at Ecm = 4.17 GeV., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review D. Abstract

The first flavor-tagged amplitude analysis of the decay D0 to the self-conjugate final state K+K-pi+pi- is presented. Data from the CLEO II.V, CLEO III, and CLEO-c detectors are used, from which around 3000 signal decays are selected. The three most significant amplitudes, which contribute to the model that best fits the data, are phirho0, K1(1270)+-K-+, and non-resonant K+K-pi+pi-. Separate amplitude analyses of D0 and D0-bar candidates indicate no CP violation among the amplitudes at the level of 5% to 30% depending on the mode. In addition, the sensitivity to the CP-violating parameter gamma/phi3 of a sample of 2000 B+ -> D0-tilde(K+K-pi+pi-)K+ decays, where D0-tilde is a D0 or D0-bar, collected at LHCb or a future flavor facility, is estimated to be (11.3 +/- 0.3) degrees using the favored model., Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures and submitted to Phys. Abstract

Using the entire CLEO-c psi(3770) to DDbar event sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 818 pb^-1 and approximately 5.4 x 10^6 DDbar events, we measure the form factors for the decays D0 to rho- e+ nu_e and D+ to rho0 e+ nu_e for the first time and the branching fractions with improved precision. A four-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit determines the form factor ratios to be: V(0)/A_1(0) = 1.48 +- 0.15 +- 0.05 and A_2(0)/A_1(0)= 0.83 +- 0.11 +- 0.04. Assuming CKM unitarity, the known D meson lifetimes and our measured branching fractions we obtain the form factor normalizations A_1(0), A_2(0), and V(0). Abstract

Using a data sample of 2.59 x 10^7 psi(2S) decays obtained with the CLEO-c detector, we perform amplitude analyses of the complementary decay chains chi_c1 -> eta pi+ pi- and chi_c1 -> eta' pi+ pi-. We find evidence for a P-wave eta' pi scattering amplitude, which, if interpreted as a resonance, would have exotic J^PC = 1^-+ and parameters consistent with the pi_1(1600) state reported in other production mechanisms. We also make the first observation of the decay a_0(980) -> eta' pi and measure the ratio of branching fractions B(a_0(980) -> eta' pi)/B(a_0(980) -> eta pi) = 0.064 +- 0.014 +- 0.014. Abstract

Using e^+e^- collision data corresponding to 5.88M Y(3S) [25.9M psi(2S)] decays and acquired by the CLEO III [CLEO-c] detectors operating at CESR, we study the single-pion transitions from Y(3S) [psi(2S)] to the respective spin-singlet states h_{b[c]}. Utilizing only the momentum of suitably selected transition-pi^0 candidates, we obtain the upper limit B(Y(3S) -> pi^0 h_b) < 1.2\times 10^{-3} at 90% confidence level, and measure B(psi(2S) -> pi^0 h_c) = (9.0+-1.5+-1.3)\times 10^{-4}. Abstract

We present the results of a Dalitz plot analysis of D^0 to K^0_S pi^0 pi^0 using the CLEO-c data set of 818 inverse pico-barns of e^+ e^- collisions accumulated at sqrt{s} = 3.77 GeV. This corresponds to three million D^0 D^0-bar pairs from which we select 1,259 tagged candidates with a background of 7.5 +- 0.9 percent. Several models have been explored, all of which include the K^*(892), K^*_2(1430), K^*(1680), the f_0(980), and the sigma(500). We find that the combined pi^0 pi^0 S-wave contribution to our preferred fit is (28.9 +- 6.3 +- 3.1)% of the total decay rate while D^0 to K^*(892)^0 pi^0 contributes (65.6 +- 5.3 +- 2.5)%. Abstract

We present the first search for the decay $D^+_{s}\to \omega e^{+}\nu$ to test the four-quark content of the $D^+_{s}$ and the $\omega$-$\phi$ mixing model for this decay. We use 586 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 4170 MeV. We find no evidence of a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(D^+_{s}\to\omega e^+\nu)<$0.20% at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Using 586 $\textrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data acquired at $\sqrt{s}=4.170$ GeV with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report the first observation of $D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}$ with a significance of $5.3 \sigma$. The ratio of branching fractions $\calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}) / \calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} \gamma)$ is measured to be $[ 0.72^{+0.15}_{-0.13} (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.10 (\textrm{syst})]%$, which is consistent with theoretical expectations.

Abstract

Using 586pb^-1 of e^+e^- collision data at E_CM = 4170MeV, produced at the CESR collider and collected with the CLEO-c detector, we observe the process e^+e^- --> pi^+ pi^- h_c(1P). We measure its cross section to be 15.6+-2.3+-1.9+-3.0pb, where the third error is due to the external uncertainty on the branching fraction of psi(2S) --> pi^0 h_c(1P), which we use for normalization. Abstract

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Upsilon(1S) resonance into a final state consisting of a photon and two K0s candidates. We find evidence for a signal for Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K0sK0s, at a rate (4.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)x10^{-5}, consistent with previous observations of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K+K-, and isospin. Combining this branching fraction with existing branching fraction measurements of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525) and J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525), we obtain the ratio of branching fractions: B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525))/B(J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525))=0.09+/-0.02, approximately consistent with expectations based on soft collinear effective theory., Comment: submitted to Brief Reports

Abstract

Using 9.32, 5.88 million Upsilon(2S,3S) decays taken with the CLEO-III detector, we obtain five product branching fractions for the exclusive processes Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{b0,1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S). We observe the transition chi_{b0}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S) for the first time. Using the known branching fractions for B[Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{bJ}(1P)], we extract values for B[chi_{bJ}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S)] for J=0, 1, 2. In turn, these values can be used to unfold the Upsilon(3S) product branching fractions to obtain values for B[Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) for the first time individually. Abstract

We report the first observation of the decay D^+ -> eta' e^+ nu_e in two analyses, which combined provide a branching fraction of B(D+ -> eta' e nu) = (2.16 +/- 0.53 +/- 0.07) x 10^{-4}. Abstract

A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the $B$-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies. Abstract

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D^0 -> K^0_S h^+ h^- decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi_3 due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B^- K^- D^0-tilde D^0-tilde -> K^0_S pi^+ pi^- decays, and between 3.2 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde, D^0-tilde -> K^0_S K^+ K^- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F_-, of the decay D^0 -> K^0_S K^+ K^- in the region of the phi -> K^+ K^- resonance. We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either \pi or K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1 at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^- pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.9 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) < 1.1 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> K^+ e^+ e^-) < 3.0 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 3.5 x 10^-6, B(D^+_s --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) < 2.2 x 10^-5, B(D^+_s --> \pi^- e^+ e^+) < 1.8 x 10^-5, B(D^+_s --> K^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.2 x 10^-5, and B(D^+_s --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 1.7 x 10^-5., Comment: 9 pages, available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/

Abstract

The decays of psi(2S) into gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been studied with the CLEO-c detector using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events obtained from e^+e^- annihilations at sqrt{s} = 3686 MeV. The data show evidence for the excitation of several N^* resonances in p pi^0 and p eta channels in pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} decays, and f_2 states in gamma p bar{p} decay. Branching fractions for decays of psi(2S) to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been determined. No evidence for p bar{p} threshold enhancements was found in the reactions psi(2S)-> X p bar{p}, where X = gamma, pi^0, eta. We do, however, find confirming evidence for a p bar{p} threshold enhancement in J/psi-> gamma p bar{p} as previously reported by BES., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures, accepted by PRD

Abstract

Using a sample of 25.9 million psi(2S) decays acquired with the CLEO-c detector at the CESR e^+e^- collider, we report branching fractions for the decays chi_cJ -> p p-bar pi^0, p p-bar eta, and p p-bar omega, with J=0,1,2. Our results for B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar pi^0) and B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar eta) are consistent with, but more precise than, previous measurements. Abstract

Using a large sample (~11800 events) of D^+ into K^- pi^+ e^+ nu_e and D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu decays collected by the CLEO-c detector running at the psi(3770), we measure the helicity basis form factors free from the assumptions of spectroscopic pole dominance and provide new, accurate measurements of the absolute branching fractions for D^+ into K^- pi^+ e^+ nu_e and D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu decays. We find branching fractions which are consistent with previous world averages. Our measured helicity basis form factors are consistent with the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions for the three main helicity basis form factors describing D^+ into anti-K*0 ell^+ nu_mu decay. The ability to analyze D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu allows us to make the first non-parametric measurements of the mass-suppressed form factor. Our result is inconsistent with existing Lattice QCD calculations. Finally, we measure the form factor that controls non-resonant s-wave interference with the D^+ into anti-K*0 ell^+ nu_mu amplitude and search for evidence of possible additional non-resonant d-wave or f-wave interference with the anti-K*0., Comment: We have made the replacement in order to make it clear that the branching fractions that we report are actually for D+ --> antiK*0 L+ nu decay. Hence, the branching fractions for D+ --> K+ pi L+ nu that we measure are corrected for the missing antiK*0 --> anti-K0 pi0 decay mode of the anti-K*0. We feel that this clarification is necessary.

Abstract

We report evidence for the ground state of bottomonium, eta_b(1S), in the radiative decay Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b in e^+e^- annihilation data taken with the CLEO III detector. Using 6 million Upsilon(3S) decays, and assuming Gamma(eta_b) = 10 MeV/c^2, we obtain B(Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b) = (7.1 +- 1.8 +- 1.1) X 10^{-4}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical significance is about 4 sigma. The mass is determined to be M(eta_b) = 9391.8 +- 6.6 +- 2.0 MeV/c^2, which corresponds to the hyperfine splitting Delta M_{hf}(1S)_b = 68.5 +- 6.6 +- 2.0 MeV/c^2. Using 9 million Upsilon(2S) decays, we place an upper limit on the corresponding Y(2S) decay, B(Y(2S) --> gamma eta_b) < 8.4 X 10^{-4} at 90 % confidence level., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phyical Review D Rapid Communications

Abstract

One important quarkonia result from the Tevatron experiments is the ratio of direct inclusive production of \chi_{c1} to \chi_{c2}, which is most readily measured using \chi_{cJ}\to\gamma J/\psi decays. Abstract

Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively. Abstract

Using (9.32, 5.88) million Y(2S; 3S) decays taken with the CLEO III detector, we obtain five product branching fractions for the exclusive processes Y(2S) -> gamma chi(b0,1,2)(1P) -> gamma gamma Y(1S) and Y(3S) -> gamma chi(b1,2)(1P) -> gamma gamma Y(1S). We observe the transition chi(b0)(1P) -> yY(1S) for the first time. Using the known branching fractions for B[Y2S) -> gamma chi(bJ)(1P)], we extract values for B[chi(bJ)(1P) -> gamma Y(1S)] for J = 0, 1, 2. In turn, these values can be used to unfold the Y(3S) product branching fractions to obtain values for B[Y(3S) -> gamma chi(b1,2)(1P)] for the first time individually. Comparison of these with each other and with the branching fraction B[Y(3S) -> gamma chi(b0)] previously measured by CLEO provides tests of relativistic corrections to electric dipole matrix elements.

Abstract

We present the first search for the decay $D^+_{s}\to ��e^{+}��$ to test the four-quark content of the $D^+_{s}$ and the $��$-$��$ mixing model for this decay. We use 586 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 4170 MeV. We find no evidence of a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(D^+_{s}\to��e^+��), 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Upsilon(1S) resonance into a final state consisting of a photon and two K0s candidates. We find evidence for a signal for Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K0sK0s, at a rate (4.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)x10^{-5}, consistent with previous observations of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K+K-, and isospin. Combining this branching fraction with existing branching fraction measurements of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525) and J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525), we obtain the ratio of branching fractions: B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525))/B(J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525))=0.09+/-0.02, approximately consistent with expectations based on soft collinear effective theory., submitted to Brief Reports

Abstract

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D-0 -> K-S,L(0) K+K- and (D) over bar (0) -> K-S,L(0) K+K-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D-0 -> K-S,L(0) pi(+)pi(-) and (D) over bar (0) -> K-S,L(0) pi(+)pi(-). Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D-0 and (D) over bar (0) mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi(3) in B- -> K- (D) over tilde (0) decays, where (D) over tilde (0) is a D-0 or (D) over bar (0) meson decaying to K(S)(0)h(+)h(-) (h = pi, K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D-0 -> K(S)(0)h(+)h(-) decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi(3) due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 degrees and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B- -> K- (D) over tilde (0), (D) over tilde (0) -> K-S(0) pi(+)pi(-) decays, and between 3.2 degrees and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B- -> K- -> (D) over tilde (0), (D) over tilde (0) -> K-S(0) K+K- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F-, of the decay D-0 -> K-S(0) K+K- in the region of the phi -> K+K- resonance. We find that in a region within 0.01 GeV2/c(4) of the nominal phi mass squared F- > 0.91 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D+ and D-s(+) mesons to final states of the form h(perpendicular to)e(-/+)e(+), where h is either pi or K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb(-1) at the center-of-mass energy E-CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10(6) D+D- pairs and 602 pb(-1) at E-CM 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10(6) D-s(*+/-) D-s(-/+) pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on branching fractions B(D+ -> pi(+)e(+)e(-)) < 5.9 x 10(-6), B(D+ -> pi(-)e(+)e(-)) < 1.1 x 10(-6), B(D+ -> K(+)e(+)e(-)) < 3.0 x 10(-6), B(D+ -> K(+)e(+)e(-)) < 3.5 x 10(-6), B(D-s(+) -> pi(+)e(+)e(-)) < 2.2 x 10(-5), B(D-s(+) -> pi(+)e(+)e(-)) < 1.8 x 10(-5), B(D-s(+) -> K(+)e(+)e(-)) < 5.2 x 10(-5), and B(D-s(+) -> K(-)e(+)e(+)) < 1.7 x 10(-5).

Abstract

The decays of psi(2S) into gamma p (p) over bar, pi(0)p (p) over bar, and eta p (p) over bar have been studied with the CLEO-c detector using a sample of 24.5 X 10(6) psi(2S) events obtained from e(+)e(-) annihilations at root s = 3686 MeV. The data show evidence for the excitation of several N* resonances in p pi(0) and p eta channels in pi(0)p (p) over bar and eta p (p) over bar decays, and f(2) states in gamma p (p) over bar decay. Branching fractions for decays of c psi(2S) to gamma p (p) over bar, pi(0)p (p) over bar, and eta p (p) over bar have been determined. No evidence for p (p) over bar threshold enhancements was found in the reactions psi(2S) -> Xp (p) over bar where X = gamma, pi(0), eta. We do, however, find confirming evidence for a p (p) over bar threshold enhancement in J/psi -> gamma p (p) over bar as previously reported by BES.

Abstract

Using a sample of 25.9 x 10(6) psi(2S) decays acquired with the CLEO-c detector at the CESR e(+)e(-) collider, we report branching fractions for the decays chi(cJ) -> p (p) over bar pi(0), p (p) over bar eta, and p (p) over bar omega, with J = 0, 1, 2. Our results for B(chi(cJ) -> p (p) over bar pi(0)) and B(chi(cJ) -> p (p) over bar eta) are consistent with, but more precise than, previous measurements. Furthermore, we include the first measurement of B(chi(cJ) -> p (p) over bar omega).

Abstract

Using a large sample (approximate to 11800 events) of D+ -> K-pi(+)e(+)nu(e) and D+ -> K-pi(+)mu(+)nu(mu) decays collected by the CLEO-c detector running at the psi(3770), we measure the helicity basis form factors free from the assumptions of spectroscopic pole dominance and provide new, accurate measurements of the absolute branching fractions for D+ -> *(0)e(+)nu(e) D+ -> *(0)mu(+)nu(mu) decays. We find branching fractions which are consistent with previous world averages. Our measured helicity basis form factors are consistent with the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions for the three main helicity basis form factors describing D+ -> (K) over bar*(0)l(+)nu(l) decay. The ability to analyze D+ -> K-pi(+)mu(+)nu(mu) allows us to make the first nonparametric measurements of the mass-suppressed form factor. Our result is inconsistent with existing lattice QCD calculations. Finally, we measure the form factor that controls nonresonant s-wave interference with the D+ -> (K) over bar (0)l(+)nu(l) amplitude and search for evidence of possible additional nonresonant d- or f-wave interference with the K*(0).

Abstract

A search for J/psi radiative decay to weakly interacting neutral final states was performed using the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. J/psi events were selected by observing the hadronic decay psi(2S) -> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi. A total of 3.7 x 10(6) J/psi events were used to study the decay J/psi -> gamma + X, where X is a narrow state that is invisible to the detector. No significant signal was observed, and upper limits on the branching fraction were set for masses m(X) up to 960 MeV/c(2). The upper limit corresponding to m(X) = 0 is 4.3 x 10(-6) at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We have measured the inclusive semileptonic branching fractions of D-0, D+, and D-s(+) mesons. For these measurements, we have used the full CLEO-c open-charm data samples, 818 pb(-1) at E-CM = 3.774 GeV, giving D-0(D) over bar (0) and D+D- events, and 602 pb(-1) at E-CM = 4.170 GeV, giving D-s*D-+/-(s)-/+ events. We obtain B(D-0 -> Xe+nu(e)) = (6.46 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.11)%, B(D+ -> Xe+nu(e)) = (16.13 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.29)%, and B(D-s(+) -> Xe+nu(e)) = (6.52 +/- 0.39 +/- 0.15)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. From these and lifetimes obtained elsewhere, we obtain the ratios of semileptonic decay widths Gamma(D+ -> Xe+nu(e))/Gamma(D-0 -> Xe+nu(e)) = 0.985 +/- 0.015 +/- 0.024 and Gamma(D-s(+) -> Xe+nu(e))/Gamma(D-0 -> Xe+nu(e)) = 0.828 +/- 0.051 +/- 0.025. The ratio of D+ and D-0 is consistent with the isospin symmetry prediction of unity, and the ratio of D-s(+) and D-0 differs from unity, as expected.

Abstract

We report a search for the decay psi(2S) -> gamma eta(c)(2S) in a sample of 25.9 x 10(6) psi(2S) events collected with the CLEO-c detector. No signals are observed in any of the 11 exclusive eta(c)(2S) decay modes studied, or in their sum. Product branching fraction upper limits are determined as a function of Gamma[eta(c)(2S)] for the 11 individual modes.

Abstract

Using data collected on the psi(3770) resonance and near the D-s*D-+/-(s)-/+ peak production energy by the CLEO-c detector, we study the decays of the possible D -> PP modes and report measurements of or upper limits on all branching fractions for Cabibbo-favored, singly Cabibbo-suppressed, and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D -> PP decays except modes involving K-L(0) (and except D-0 -> K+pi(-)). We normalize with respect to the Cabibbo-favored D modes, D-0 -> K-pi(+), D+ -> K-pi(+)pi(+), and D-s(+) -> (K+KS0).

Abstract

We report evidence for the ground state of bottomonium, eta(b)(1S), in the radiative decay Gamma(3S) -> gamma eta(b) in e(+)e(-) annihilation data taken with the CLEO III detector. Using 6 X 10(6) Gamma(dS) decays, and assuming Gamma(eta(b)) = 10 +/- 5 MeV/c(2), we obtain B(Gamma(3S) -> gamma eta(b)) = (7.1 +/- 1.8 +/- 1.3) X 10(-4), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical significance is -4 sigma. The mass is determined to be M(eta(b)) = 9391.8 +/- 6.6 +/- 2.0 MeV/c(2), which corresponds to the hyperfine splitting Delta M-hf(1S)(b) = 68.5 +/- 6.6 +/- 2.0 MeV/c(2). Using 9 X 10(6) Gamma(2S) decays, we place an upper limit on the corresponding Gamma(2S) decay, B(Gamma(2S) -> gamma eta(b)) < 8.4 X 10(-4) at 90% confidence level.
