In this study, the acoustic damping performances of the dual Helmholtz resonators were numerically evaluated using a 3D model. The grazing flow passes tangentially through the resonator neck, with a Mach number range of 0 ≤ Ma ≤ 0.1. The numerical model operates by solving the linearized Navier–Stokes equations. The current model is validated through a comparison with experimental data. The model is then utilized to explore the effects of the dual Helmholtz resonators on acoustic transmission loss performance in the presence of a grazing flow. Three key parameters are examined: 1) different implementation configurations of the dual Helmholtz resonators (including Models (b), (c), and (d)), 2) the mean temperature of the grazing flow, and 3) the axial distance between the dual Helmholtz resonators. For comparison, the acoustic damping performance of these dual Helmholtz resonators is compared to the single Helmholtz resonator case (Model (a)). The maximum transmission loss of Model (c) is significantly higher, recording values of 91%, 89.4%, and 92.5% than those observed for Model (a) at Ma = 0, Ma = 0.05, and Ma = 0.1, respectively. It is observed that the dual Helmholtz resonators dramatically increase the transmission loss. Model (c) is demonstrated to be associated with the most significant damping on the acoustic plane waves in comparison with that of Model (a). Additionally, the maximum transmission loss of Model (c) is 23.23 dB, 30.32 dB, and 34.58 dB at mean temperatures of 300 K, 600 K, and 900 K, respectively. Therefore, increasing the mean temperature is shown to be beneficial to enhance transmission losses in the presence of the grazing flow. Furthermore, under Ma = 0.1, the resonant frequency of Model (c) is 127 Hz, 152 Hz, and 172 Hz, corresponding to mean temperatures of 300 K, 600 K, and 900 K. It can be concluded that increasing the temperature has the effect of broadening the resonant frequency, especially at a high grazing flow Mach number. However, increasing the mean temperature results in a reduction of transmission loss in the absence of the grazing flow. In the case of Model (c), a 32 cm axial distance results in a 5.6% larger transmission loss at Ma = 0 and a 26.4% larger loss at Ma = 0.1 compared to a 16 cm axial distance. This indicates that increasing the axial distance between the dual Helmholtz resonators improves transmission loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simplified model of the absorption coefficient of traditional Helmholtz resonators (THR) was established, and the influence of different geometric parameters on the absorption coefficient of THR was analyzed. To realize the low-frequency broadband acoustic structure design, an accurate theoretical model for the sound absorption coefficient of the curled acoustic metasurface (CAM) unit was established. Based on the complex frequency plane method (CFPM), the CAM units with perfect sound absorption at four discrete frequencies were designed. The low-frequency broadband acoustic metasurfaces in parallel under decoupled and coupled conditions were studied, and the thickness is only 12 mm. The high efficiency of sound absorption above 0.8 was achieved in the frequency range of 758 Hz–940 Hz. The experiment verifies the efficient sound absorption effect of the CAM unit and the broadband sound absorption effect under coupled conditions. This study addresses the noise challenges associated with roots blowers, pivotal devices in water treatment technology, by developing an innovative duct silencer. To construct an efficient internal structure for noise reduction, a novel rectangular design altering sound propagation direction was implemented. Additionally, an array of Helmholtz resonators giving substantial transmission loss within specific frequency ranges, was used. Experimental validation and acoustic analysis were employed to evaluate the silencer's performance, ultimately confirming its noise reduction capabilities. The optimized silencer through a parametric study of the Helmholtz resonator structure exhibited an impressive transmission loss of 14.75 dB, signifying a remarkable 74 % enhancement over the existing circular silencer design. This remarkable performance substantiated its effectiveness in mitigating noise. To validate the optimized design, a physical prototype was manufactured and subjected to noise measurement experiments, revealing a significant noise reduction of 17.3 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a Helmholtz Resonator-type Flexoelectric Acoustic Energy Harvester (HR-FAEH), composed of a Helmholtz Resonator (HR) and a double-sided Flexoelectric Disk Oscillator (FDO). The electromechanical governing equations, incorporating geometric nonlinearity, are derived using Hamilton's principle. Utilizing the multiscale method, we obtain the cavity sound pressure, oscillator displacement, and voltage output response, with validation through simulations in COMSOL. The study's innovation lies in the concurrent consideration of piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects, enhancing the system's performance. The inclusion of geometric nonlinearity, accounting for large deformations, enhances the model's accuracy under high sound pressure excitations. Our research unveils performance degradation in the Helmholtz Resonator-type acoustic energy harvester under elevated environmental sound pressure. The combination of nonlinear analysis and structural optimization effectively mitigates this degradation. In comparison to the non-optimized harvester, the maximum voltage output increases by 39.1 %, and expressions for the optimized model parameters are provided. Recent experimental studies suggest that lean-premixed pure hydrogen combustion plays a central role in generating self-sustained pressure oscillations, preferentially coupled with high-frequency tangential modes in land-based gas turbine combustors. The triggering of such high-frequency combustion dynamics is known to be closely connected with relatively small, flashback-resistant, characteristic nozzle dimensions, and the structural and kinematic properties of the premixed hydrogen flames. To identify important trends in the transverse modal dynamics of hydrogen flames, here we conduct detailed measurements of multislit injector-driven hydrogen flame dynamics. We analyze the measured data using the wave decomposition technique for PDF-based statistical assessments of bimodality and nodal line orientation. Experimentally, the planar-to-transverse mode transformation is revealed to be controlled by the combined influence of flame temperature and thermal power, which ultimately leads to the development of well-defined standing modes at around 4.69 kHz under the most severe test condition. Using analytic modeling and rigorous validation measurements, we also investigate Helmholtz resonator-type passive stabilization and its impact on the integrated system's thermoacoustic states with respect to the change in purge air flowrate. Our results show that the coupled system does not retain many of the initial thermoacoustic properties, but instead undergoes prominent changes in the first tangential modal dynamics, progressively evolving from a large-amplitude bimodal to a low-amplitude unimodal state. • High-frequency transverse instabilities arise characteristically from premixed hydrogen combustion. • Transverse modal dynamics are identified using wave decomposition and related PDF calculations. • Helmholtz resonators are designed and validated in isothermal and reacting flow environments. • Detailed characterizations of the integrated damper-combustor system are performed. This study aims to tackle the challenge of high noise levels on balconies while preserving natural ventilation. Eight innovative balcony designs, incorporating elements like diffuser edges, undulating ceilings, Helmholtz resonators, grooves, or sound traps, were evaluated via finite element (FE) modeling. The insertion loss results showed that for many balcony designs, noise reduction in the balcony could deteriorate beyond an elevation of 8 m. However, the front jagged and full wavy ceiling designs were shown to be more robust in noise attenuation across balconies on different floors. The jagged ledge and grooved parapet designs yielded an overall 1.5 dBA lower SPL at the exterior regions, compared to other designs, which implies that the designs are less acoustically detrimental to nearby residential blocks as they tend to diffract and absorb incident noise. The jagged ledge design is more effective for lower floors while the jagged ceiling design is more effective for higher floors. A combination of the protruded jagged ledge for the lower floor and jagged balcony ceiling for the higher floor would result in the lowest noise ingress over three stories of residential units: this would be capable of achieving more than 3 dB noise reduction and would offer viable options for improving balcony noise mitigation, by providing valuable insights to architects and designers seeking practical solutions for outdoor noise reduction. Our study highlights that whereas the spectrum characteristics of acoustic absorption materials may be less tunable, and where reduced head space is traded for thicker material for greater ab-sorption and added affixation and maintenance cost, the jagged ledge and ceiling curvatures can actually be shape-tuned, say for every 3 to 4 floors up the high-rise to more effective reduce noise ingress and possibly improve the architecture façade outlook.

Traditional sonic crystals (SCs) are based on scatterers or resonators distributed periodically that attenuate sound waves in different bands of frequencies. Recently, we adopted an improved design of SC, namely, the gradient-based sonic crystal (GBSC), designed with a gradient in the geometric parameters using nonuniform resonators and lattices. The finite element (FE) study on the GBSCs indicated that the gradient induces better attenuation than the traditional periodic SCs. This work is an extension of our previous work with experimental and new FE studies on different parameters of the GBSC in an attempt to improve the attenuation of the GBSCs. It was found that the gradient of the geometry enhances the Bragg scattering and resonance in the array, creating a large number of band frequencies. When designed properly by manipulating their gradient, GBSCs were found to target particular frequency bands over other GBSCs of identical filling ratios by coupling the resonant frequencies or the resonant and Bragg frequencies. It was also found that the thickness of the GBSC can be reduced by removing some specific columns from the array without significantly affecting the attenuation by the GBSC. Similarly, it was also found that the relative position of the resonator columns in a GBSC affects the band frequencies, and swapping the columns may also improve the attenuation by the GBSC. This paper presents the results of a study of self-sustained processes excited in a Helmholtz resonator after a flow over its orifice. A comparative analysis of various approaches to the numerical modeling of this problem was carried out, taking into account both the requirements for achieving the required accuracy and taking into account the resource greediness of calculations, the results of which were verified by comparison with data obtained during a special experiment. The configuration with a spherical resonator with a natural frequency of 260 Hz and an orifice diameter (about 5 cm) in an air flow with a speed of 6 to 14 m/s was considered. A comparison of the calculation results with data obtained in experiments carried out in the wind tunnel demonstrated that the accuracy of calculations of the characteristics of the self-sustained mode using the simplest URANS class model tends to the accuracy of calculations within the large eddy simulation approach formulated in the WMLES model. At the same time, when using WMLES, it is possible to better reproduce the background level of pulsations. From the point of view of resource greediness, expressed in the number of core hours spent obtaining a solution, both models of the turbulence turned out to be almost equivalent when using the same grid models. Purpose: Development a new combined material, nanomembrane and melamine foam, for noise attenuation at mid-range frequency to reduce noise inside an airplane cabin. Methods: To be able to investigate how acoustic properties of acoustic foams are affected by nanomaterials, a new type of Helmholtz resonator based on a combination melamine foam and nanomembranes is proposed. Its performance was evaluated experimentally based on ASTM C384 and ASTM C522. Results: The Helmholtz resonator based on an association of nanomembranes doped with carbon nanotubes and melamine foams provided an effective sound absorption coefficient peak (α), ranging from 0.94 to 0.99, in the range of 1200–1600 Hz, a drastic shift from the high frequency range (5500–6000 Hz) commonly detected for melamine foam. The new system sound absorption peak performance at mid-range frequencies (1200–1600 Hz) was obtained with an increase in thickness between 0.05 and 0.09%, a virtual no weight addition to the soundproof material. Moreover, the analytical model based on Langmuir air flow resistivity and the Delany–Bazley equations captured the experimental trend with accuracy. Conclusion: The new material proposed is a valuable option for noise attenuation inside airplane cabin, in special, regional jets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present work is to design active acoustic metamaterial consisting of an array of Helmholtz resonators and fabricating them using an additive manufacturing technique in order to assist in a reduction in noise levels in aerospace applications. To this aim, initially, a passive metamaterial consisting of an array of 64 Helmholtz resonator unit cells is designed and tested to establish the effectiveness and region of performance. The selected design variable for change is identified as the resonator cavity depth through the frequency response for each parameter of the Helmholtz resonance equation and randomized to achieve a broadband frequency range of the passive metamaterial. An active model of this design (actuated by a stepper motor) is fabricated and tested. The metamaterials are tested under two acoustic set-ups: a closed system aimed at recreating the environment of a soundproof room and an open-system aimed to recreate the condition of an active liner. For the case of passive system, the metamaterial gave sound attenuation of 18 dB (for f = 150 Hz) in open system configuration and 33 dB (f = 350 Hz) in closed system configuration. The attenuation obtained for the active model was 10–15 dB over the mean line performance for the case of closed system and 15–20 dB for the case of open system. The closed system was also tested for performance at multiple cavity depths by setting two wall depths at 10 mm and three walls at 50 mm. This test yielded an attenuation of 15 dB at 180 Hz, the frequency corresponding to 50 mm cavity depth, and 10 dB at 515 Hz, corresponding to 10 mm cavity depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of acoustic liners, based on double-degree-of-freedom Helmholtz resonators, for low-frequency-noise attenuation is limited by the volume of individual resonating cavities. This study investigates the effect of the septum neck length on the acoustic performance of double-degree-of-freedom resonators, both experimentally and numerically, for varying cavity volume ratios. The underlying sound attenuation mechanism is studied by analysing the acoustic pressure fields within the resonator cavities. An increase in the septum neck is shown to lower the frequencies affected by the resonator. In addition, it deteriorates and significantly improves the sound attenuation performance at the primary and secondary peak transmission-loss frequencies, respectively.

We present frequency-selective 1-bit bifunctional coding metasurfaces (BCMs) for acoustic-wave field manipulations. Unlike most conventional metasurfaces operating at a single frequency and having only one functionality, the BCM demonstrates the capability to achieve different functionalities at two distinct frequencies. The underlying mechanism is based on the design of the coding units with Helmholtz resonators operating at two frequencies independently. We demonstrate the achievement of different functionalities by the BCMs, involving acoustic focusing, generation of Airy beam, and acoustic splitting. The results are shown through theoretical predictions and finite-element simulations, which show good correspondence. Our work presents a promising metasurface design for pragmatic applications, such as multiple acoustic beam shaping and information preservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This investigation analyses special papers and doctoral theses that treat transitions of pipe flows as a resonance phenomenon of wave frequencies. These frequencies are natural frequencies of pipe flows, of components of the test section and of vortex ring formations. Resonance conditions are derived that show how the critical Reynolds number, Rec, depends on the volume of the plenum chamber, the pipe diameter, the pipe length, etc. The derived resonance relations were verified experimentally using the experimental data of the third author, yielding $ R{e_c} \sim 1/\sqrt {{V_{ple}}} $ R e c ∼ 1 / V ple , $ R{e_c}\sim 1/\left({\sqrt L D} \right) $ R e c ∼ 1 / (L D) and other interesting results. These findings suggest that the laminar-to-turbulent transition has various modes and transitive dependences. To understand this fully, it is necessary to take all components of the test section involved into account. The test section considered in this paper consists of a mass flow controller to supply the airflow and a plenum chamber, followed by the actual pipe of interest. The increasing popularity of acoustic absorbing metamaterials is followed by the performance problem formulation on the type of elemental acoustic cells used for structure development. The state-of-the-art investigation provided replication problems with common designs and great dispersion in the received results compared to the references, especially on the connection methods between basic metamaterial elements and their shape modification. There is a lack of basic knowledge on the consequences of using basic metamaterial cells typology and a description of its influence and interaction between the resonators. The paper will present the numerical modeling results in COMSOL Multiphysics for the basic metamaterial cells comparison under the sound absorption coefficients - Helmholtz resonators series or quarter-wavelength resonators. Different methods for resonator placement and construction will be discussed. Microperforated panel, MPP, can be considered as a multi or N-holes Helmholtz resonator. It is a light, clean and tunable sound absorber, for which a first modeling was established by Maa in 1975. It is a resonator in sub-millimeter size of diameter (0.5-1) mm, to provide enough acoustic resistance and low acoustic mass reactance which are necessary for wide-band sound absorber. The characteristic property of such a resonator is its ability to absorb sound waves of a particular frequency, the socalled resonant frequency. In practical and engineering applications, for prefabricated microperforated panel, it is important to determine the resonance frequency as precisely as possible, especially if the panel will be used as a sound absorber at a certain frequency. There is high deviation between the exact resonance frequency value of single MPP absorber which can be obtained from the peak of calculated absorption curve by Maa's equation and that value which can be calculated by the classical N-holes Helmholtz resonance frequency equation. A proposed modified and simplified equation for calculating the resonance frequency of single MPP sound absorber of hole diameter (0.5-1) mm, which derived from absorption equation of Maa, is introduced. The new proposed equation gave good agreement and little deviation, maximum deviation was about 5 Hz over frequency range from 50 Hz to 1000 Hz, from the exact value of resonance frequency. This paper presents the technological advancement of using friction powders to increase the absorption of acoustic liners used in the reduction of tonal noise generated by aero-engines or for other applications related to Helmholtz resonators used in noise absorption of low frequencies. The experimental research was conducted during the European project ARTEM (2017–2022), and after. This concept was inspired by the discovery made by several historians of narrow neck bottles filled with ash in the old Christian churches. These artifacts were made with the purpose of absorbing low frequency noises. Based on this creative idea, the present authors proposed a new method of noise absorption capabilities of acoustic liners filled with various types and quantities of natural and artificial powders. Considering the positive results the ARTEM project offered, COMOTI continued testing this concept by using even finer cork powders manufactured with a new technology. Measurements in Kundt tubes showed that noise absorption increased significantly in broadband for low frequencies (over 0.9 at high frequencies and 0.6 at low frequencies, 500 Hz). Some of the researched powders can be used in the field of bladed machines to reduce the aerodynamic noise of an aircraft or in the automotive industry where the reduction of low frequency noises is necessary. Hearing loss is a significant quality-of-life (QOL) issue in aging populations and is linked to social isolation, dementia, and depression. Early detection and treatment of hearing loss are critically important aspects of preventing cognitive decline and dementia. To date, smartphone, or tablet-based hearing test methods have been proposed to increase the rate of hearing loss detection outside of the hospital. However, simple hearing tests may be performed without adequate soundproofing facilities; therefore, the reliability of such tests in noisy environments is questionable. In this study, we propose a simple hearing test method that uses a soundproof active noise control (ANC) headphone with acoustic-filtering earcups. The ANC headphones provide sufficient soundproofing over a wide frequency range, and the acoustic-filtering earcups provide effective soundproofing around the test frequency. The proposed earcup is equipped with a Helmholtz resonator (HR) array, wherein multiple HRs are densely arrayed in a honeycomb structure. The muffling effect of the HRs effectively attenuated the noise at a specific frequency. This property is useful for high-accuracy hearing tests, in which the noise around the test frequency is sufficiently reduced. The prototype device attained a maximum noise attenuation of 50 dB at approximately 4 kHz and provided hearing tests that were as accurate as those obtained in a soundproof room.

An increasingly significant area of research with several applications in numerous disciplines is that of multi-neck Helmholtz resonators. This research is set to explore the accuracy and applicability of the finite element method (FEM) for the calculation of the resonance frequency of multi-neck Helmholtz resonators. The FEM is employed for the estimation of the resonance frequency in various cases of multi-neck Helmholtz resonators: with cylindrical or spherical bodies, with unflanged or flanged necks of various dimensions and with various combinations of the above. Also, single neck resonators are examined. The FEM results are compared with the results of a recently proposed theoretical model available in the literature and with the outcome of the lumped element approximation (multi-neck) accounting for the added neck surface area. Comparisons revealed little deviation between the FEM and theoretical model (less than 1.1% error of calculation for every case). On the contrary, in comparison with the lumped element approximation (multi-neck), the error of calculation is significant (up to 40.3% for the cases examined). The FEM will prove useful in expanding our understanding of how multi-neck Helmholtz resonators perform under various conditions and configurations. The present research, which highlights the applicability of the FEM for the calculations of the resonance frequency of multi-neck Helmholtz resonators, goes a step further; this approach can be applied in special cases where it is not trivial to apply an analytical formula. A detailed experimental investigation of NOx emissions was conducted in order to get more precise combustion data for a Helmholtz resonator valveless pulse combustor. A laboratory-scale model of the combustor was designed and operated with a non-premixed input of air and propane. The effects of fuel flow rate, temperature, and pressure amplitude on NOx emissions through a variety of experimental tests were studied. The tests were carried out for three tailpipe lengths, two inlet pipe lengths, and two combustion chamber volumes. The results revealed that the variations in operational and design parameters have a significant impact on NOx emissions. NOx emissions reach a maximum value near the stoichiometric condition as temperature and pressure, which are related to the fuel flow rate, reach their maximum values. Experiments show inverse relationships between CO and NOx emissions. One of the uses of Helmholtz resonators is as sound absorbers for room acoustic applications, especially for the low frequency range. Their efficiency is centered around their resonance frequency which mainly depends on elements of their geometry such as the resonator volume and neck dimensions. Incorporating additional necks on the body of a Helmholtz resonator (depending on whether they are open or closed) has been found to alter the resulting resonance frequency. For this study, tunable Helmholtz resonators to multiple resonance frequencies, are proposed and investigated utilizing additional necks. The resonance frequencies of various multi-neck Helmholtz resonators are first modeled with the use of the finite element method (FEM), then calculated with the use of an analytical approach and the results of the two approaches are finally compared. The results of this study show that Helmholtz resonators with multiple resonances at desired frequencies are achievable with the use of additional necks, while FEM and analytical methods can be used for the estimation of the resonance frequencies. Analytical and FEM approach results show a good agreement in cases of small number of additional necks, while the increasing differences in cases of higher neck additions, were attributed to the change in effective length of the necks as demonstrated by FEM. The proposed approach can be useful for tunable sound absorbers for room acoustics applications according to the needs of a space. In this study, a design method of broadband low-frequency muffler based on NN method and Helmholtz resonators with helical necks is proposed, which ensures almost perfect ventilation and broadband sound insulation in the low- and medium-frequency range. First, the sound insulation performance of the muffler is improved by adding a helical structure at the port. The slit Helmholtz resonator with a helical structure is able to reduce the cross-sectional area of the resonator port and increase the contact area of thermal viscosity loss, thus reducing the peak frequency of sound insulation and increasing the sound energy loss. Using finite element analysis software, the structural transmission loss is simulated. At the same time, the neural network method is used to predict the combined structure, then, the combined structure can be designed quickly and reasonably to achieve the sound insulation of medium- and low-frequency broadband. Experimental and simulation results show that in the target range of 430 Hz–2220 Hz, the overall TL exceeds 30 dB and the maximum exceeds 60 dB. In addition, when a helical structure is added, the overall pipeline remains unchanged; and when a muffler is added on the basis, the perfect ventilation effect can be achieved. Acoustic metamaterials with both ventilation and broadband asymmetric absorption have demonstrated great scientific significance and promising applicability. In this work, we design an asymmetric absorbing cell (AAC) consisting of a pair of detuned Helmholtz resonators (HRs) connected by sound channels that allows airflow with a ventilation ratio (ventilation area divided by sound incidence area) of 40%, which can achieve near-perfect sound absorption in the operating frequency range when sound waves are incident from the left port. However, when incident on the right port, the acoustic absorption coefficient does not exceed 40% at most, so asymmetric absorption is achieved. In addition, we form parallel three-cell asymmetric absorber (PTAA) by paralleling three AACs, which have broadband asymmetric absorption compared to AAC. Furthermore, we design multi-asymmetric absorber (MAA), which can achieve broadband asymmetric absorption range from 1000 Hz to 1750 Hz, and also allow air circulation. Moreover, experimental validation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of fabricated MAA by 3D printing technology. The aim of the present work is to design active acoustic metamaterial consisting of an array of Helmholtz resonators and fabricating them using an additive manufacturing technique in order to assist in a reduction in noise levels in aerospace applications. To this aim, initially, a passive metamaterial consisting of an array of 64 Helmholtz resonator unit cells is designed and tested to establish the effectiveness and region of performance. The selected design variable for change is identified as the resonator cavity depth through the frequency response for each parameter of the Helmholtz resonance equation and randomized to achieve a broadband frequency range of the passive metamaterial. An active model of this design (actuated by a stepper motor) is fabricated and tested. The metamaterials are tested under two acoustic set-ups: a closed system aimed at recreating the environment of a soundproof room and an open-system aimed to recreate the condition of an active liner. For the case of passive system, the metamaterial gave sound attenuation of 18 dB (for f = 150 Hz) in open system configuration and 33 dB (f = 350 Hz) in closed system configuration. The attenuation obtained for the active model was 10–15 dB over the mean line performance for the case of closed system and 15–20 dB for the case of open system. The closed system was also tested for performance at multiple cavity depths by setting two wall depths at 10 mm and three walls at 50 mm. This test yielded an attenuation of 15 dB at 180 Hz, the frequency corresponding to 50 mm cavity depth, and 10 dB at 515 Hz, corresponding to 10 mm cavity depth.

Abstract The main scope of this work is to study the effect of embedding a periodic pattern inside a porous material, in order to passively improving its acoustic performance in terms of sound transmission loss. A contemplated application is the improvement of classical aeronautical soundproofing packages. In order to reach this goal, numerical models of an acoustic package including periodic patterns are implemented using the finite element method and the Transfer Matrix Method. Firstly, some of the proposed configurations are experimentally tested, providing a comparison and validation of the obtained numerical results. Afterwards, several configurations of inclusions are numerically studied, and incorporate hollow cylindrical inclusions, half-cut hollow cylindrical inclusions and cylindrical Helmholtz resonators. The improvements in terms of transmission loss, essentially brought by a periodicity peak, are evaluated under plane wave excitation with various incidence angles. The main novelties of the present work are represented by an experimental validation of the proposed acoustic meta-materials that were only numerically studied in previous works. The effect of the inclusion of a periodic pattern of Helmholtz resonators inside the foam core is also considered. Purpose: In overtone singing a singer produces two pitches simultaneously, a low-pitched, continuous drone plus a melody played on the higher, flutelike and strongly enhanced overtones of the drone. The purpose of this study was to analyse underlying acoustical, phonatory and articulatory phenomena. Methods: The voice source was analyzed by inverse filtering the sound, the articulation from a dynamic MRI video of the vocal tract profile, and the lip opening from a frontal-view video recording. Vocal tract cross-distances were measured in the MR recording and converted to area functions, the formant frequencies of which computed. Results: Inverse filtering revealed that the overtone enhancement resulted from a close clustering of formants 2 and 3. The MRI material showed that for low enhanced overtone frequencies (FE) the tongue tip was raised and strongly retracted, while for high FE the tongue tip was less retracted but forming a longer constriction. Thus, the tongue configuration changed from an apical/anterior to a dorsal/posterior articulation. The formant frequencies derived from the area functions matched almost perfectly those used for the inverse filtering. Further, analyses of the area functions revealed that the second formant frequency was strongly dependent on the back cavity, and the third on the front cavity, which acted like a Helmholtz resonator, tuned by the tongue tip position and lip opening. Conclusions: This type of overtone singing can be fully explained by the well-established source-filter theory of voice production, as recently found by Bergevin et al. Thermo-acoustic instabilities are mainly formed due to in-phase superposition of non-uniform heat release and pressure variation in the combustors of gas turbines, rocket engines and other acoustically confined spaces. These instabilities not only damage the structural system but also reduce its combustion efficiency and heat transfer rate. Hence suppression of thermo-acoustic instabilities is a prominent requirement for stable and safe heat generation in the combustors. In this work, the Helmholtz resonator has been used to suppress the instability. The efficacy of the resonator has been further increased by the addition of absorptive material to it. This work concentrates on inspecting the influence of cavity volume, neck length and neck diameter of the Helmholtz Resonator and the thickness of the absorptive material in the damping process of thermo-acoustic instabilities. The experimentation was carried out for various combinations of resonator cavity volume, neck diameter and neck length, and the best combination was found to be 6 mm neck diameter with 20 mm neck length at 60% volume which provided an acoustic damping of around 30 dB. Further, it was noticed that the addition of absorptive material is effective at lower volumes of Helmholtz resonator, and with an increase in thickness of absorptive material beyond a certain limit, the damping ability of the resonator reduces. Helmholtz resonators are widely applied in industries to reduce the transmission of unwanted noise and passively attenuate tonal noise in pipes/ducts. For example, internal combustion engines take advantage of Helmholtz resonators by combining air box, subwoofers and perforated pipes/plates to reduce engine noise emission nowadays. However, the main drawback of the conventional Helmholtz resonators includes a very narrow bandwidth. To broaden the effective noise damping frequency range of Helmholtz resonators, a number of different improved designs are reported and tested recently in the literature such as applying an array of separated resonators or implementing mechanical-coupled Helmholtz resonators. In this work, we conduct a brief review on the aeroacoustics damping performance of coupled Helmholtz resonators over low frequency range. The noise damping performances could be characterized and quantified in terms of transmission loss and sound absorption coefficient. Both definitions are discussed. Comparison is then made between the separately working resonators and the mechanical-coupled ones. This is achieved by replacing the sharable flexible sidewall with a rigid sidewall. The effect of the mean grazing flow is also discussed and examined on the noise damping performances. An experimental case study of the present authors is included. Additionally, to improve the noise damping performance further, an overview of the resonators neck with different noise damping materials inserted is conducted. Finally, 3D numerical approaches in simulating the aeroacoustics damping performances of coupled Helmholtz resonators are reviewed. Metasurfaces formed by monopole and dipole resonators are studied theoretically. The monopole resonators are Helmholtz resonators or membranes vibrating on the first eigenfrequency; the dipole ones are spheres on springs or membranes vibrating on the second eigenfrequency. It is shown that acoustic properties of the metasurface formed by the built-in monopole resonators can be described by an equivalent impedance, which characterizes a normal forcing to the surface, whereas this impedance is not suitable for the metasurface formed by the dipole resonators, because motion of the metasurface is excited by a forcing tangential to the surface. For such boundaries, a new characteristic named “tangential impedance” is proposed. This is a ratio of the second derivative of the sound pressure along a coordinate tangential to the boundary to the normal velocity of the boundary. The dipole metasurface can be described by the equivalent tangential impedance. Reflection and absorption coefficients of the surface with the tangential impedance are found for a harmonic plane wave in dependance of an incidence angle. It is found that the angular dependences of the coefficients are very different for the monopole and dipole metasurfaces.

Based on the turbulence model and the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW–H) acoustic model, numerical simulations of acoustic characteristics in the Hartmann whistle with the Helmholtz resonator are carried out. The important parameters that control the flow oscillation features of the Hartmann whistle are the stand-off distance, cavity geometry, nozzle pressure ratio, etc. The computational results are compared to experimental data. Under the condition that the jet exit diameter, cavity diameter, nozzle pressure ratio, and stand-off distance remain constant, the mass flow rate and the sound pressure level are calculated as functions of the diameter and length of the Helmholtz resonator. The results show that the sound directivity is similar in the conventional Hartmann whistle and the Hartmann whistle with the Helmholtz resonator, while the sound intensity is higher in the conventional Hartmann whistle. Also, the sound intensity reaches the maximum in the direction perpendicular to the jet. The magnitude of the sound intensity decreases gradually with an increase in the diameter of the Helmholtz resonator, and the decreasing trend in the fundamental resonance frequency is clearly visible. Next, as the length of the Helmholtz resonator increases, the sound intensity first decreases and then increases again. For low-frequency noise control problems, a Helmholtz-type phononic crystal with an adjustable chamber was constructed. The inner chamber of the structure is divided into upper and lower chambers by a diaphragm connected by a movable telescopic screw. Meanwhile, an arch-shaped opening channel is adopted. Characteristics of bandgap and sound insulation of the structure are analyzed by finite element method, and equivalent models of the structure at the starting frequency and cut-off frequency of the bandgap are constructed by "acoustic-force analogy" method. The results show that the designed structure can generate six complete bandgaps within 500 Hz, and the lowest bandgap frequency can reach 31. 34 Hz. At the same time, it shows good sound insulation performance in each bandgap frequency band, and the maximum sound insulation is up to 111. 95 dB. Finally, by adjusting the telescopic screw and changing the cavity structure layout, multiple resonant bandgaps can be connected to form a wide bandgap, and achieve the purpose of adjusting the sound insulation band. Introduction: Gradient-based sonic crystals (GBSCs) based on rigid resonators that improve the acoustic attenuation over the traditional sonic crystals (SCs) were recently studied numerically. The present work is a numerical and experimental study of the GBSCs based on rigid and cladded resonators and aims to further improve the attenuation of the GBSCs over the traditional SCs. Methods: Extensive finite element (FE) and experimental studies were conducted on the GBSCs and the traditional uniform SCs using jute, a natural fibrous material as claddings over rigid resonators in the form of felts. The multiple linear regression (MLR) technique was used to find the influence of the airflow resistivity and thickness of the claddings on the attention spectrum of the GBSC. The effect of the angle of incidence of the sound waves on the attenuation by the GBSC and traditional SC was also studied experimentally. Results: Though the claddings were found to improve the overall attenuation by the GBSC, they do not improve the attenuation at all frequencies. Similarly, the claddings were found to be more effective on the GBSC than the traditional Helmholtz resonator-based SC (HRSC). However, the GBSC was found to be less effective than the traditional HRSC if the angle of incidence of the sound waves changes. Conclusions: For a fixed filling ratio of the GBSC resonators, the Bragg scattering and local resonance of a GBSC based on rigid resonators are more effective attenuation mechanisms in the resonance and first Bragg gap regimes than the combined effects of absorption by the fibrous cladding, Bragg scattering and local resonance of a GBSC based on cladded resonators. However, the claddings significantly improve the attenuation post the resonance and first Bragg gaps. Therefore, the claddings should only be used when the targeted frequency regime lies above the resonance and first Bragg gaps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, the Helmholtz resonance modes design is developed obtaining Fano‐like interferences. The proposed design employs two vertically aligned Helmholtz resonators exciting two different orders of mode, which induce desired constructive or destructive interferences. The critical part of this design is the realization of a mode‐selective feature. The mode‐selective feature is achieved by adjusting the geometrical parameters of the two Helmholtz resonators. Meanwhile, it can be constructed by applying different mediums under the symmetrical geometric topology. From the numerical simulation results, desired modes can be excited at desired resonant frequencies achieving constructive or destructive interferences. Helmholtz resonators (HRs) have the advantage of extending and improving their insulating capacity when used as scatterers in noise barriers made of periodic media, such as sonic crystals (SCs). However, the interaction between multiple Bragg scattering and local resonance phenomena can increase or decrease the insulation of the barrier depending on its design. In the present work, we numerically investigate the factors that determine how such interferences occur and the specific conditions to increase the insertion loss of sonic crystal noise barriers (SCNBs) made of cylindrical scatterers with HRs. Two factors are crucial for the variation of the isolation of the barrier in the Bragg-bandgap (Bragg-BG): the orientation of the resonator mouth with respect to the incident wave, and the resonance frequency of the resonator with respect to the central frequency of the Bragg-BG. Based on this phenomenon, we propose a sonic crystal noise barrier consisting of scatterers with two Helmholtz resonators. The insertion loss of the structure is determined numerically and shows an increase of 20 dB at the BG compared to a conventional barrier with cylindrical scatterers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Helmholtz resonators (HR) are widely used in aero-engine systems for noise reduction. By connecting a pair of HRs in series (neck-cavity-neck-cavity), a dual HRs system is formed. This study investigated the influence of neck length, cavity volume and flow Mach number on the noise attenuation performance of a dual HRs system. A three-dimensional numerical simulation was performed to calculate the transmission loss results. The transmission loss (TL) results indicated that the second neck length can influence the second resonance frequency and TL max . Changing the cavity volume significantly influences the noise attenuation ability under lower flow rate conditions compared to higher flow rate conditions. The flow Mach number had a more significant impact on the first TL peak than on the second TL peak. This study shows the relationship between the geometric parameters, grazing flow and noise attenuation performance of a dual HRs system and could provide guidance in designing suitable dual HRs for aero-engine systems. A Helmholtz resonator (HR) with an embedded aperture is an effective acoustic metamaterial for noise reduction in the low-frequency range. Its sound absorption property is significantly affected by the aperture shape. Sound absorption properties of HRs with the embedded aperture for various tangent sectional shapes were studied by a two-dimensional acoustic finite element simulation. The sequence of resonance frequency from low to high was olive, common trapeziform, reverse trapeziform, dumbbell and rectangle. Meanwhile, those HRs for various cross-sectional shapes were investigated by a three-dimensional acoustic finite element simulation. The sequence of resonance frequency from low to high were round, regular hexagon, square, regular triangle and regular pentagon. Moreover, the reason for these phenomena was analyzed by the distributions of sound pressure, acoustic velocity and temperature. Furthermore, on the basement of the optimum tangent and cross-sectional shape, the sound absorption property of parallel-connection Helmholtz resonators was optimized. The experimental sample with optimal parameters was fabricated, and its average sound absorption coefficient reached 0.7821 in 500–820 Hz with a limited thickness of 30 mm. An array of air chambers embedded on the tunnel track is numerically investigated for different configurations. The air chambers act as an in-tunnel countermeasure to alleviate non-linear steepening of compression waves during propagation process thereby mitigating emission of high amplitude micro-pressure waves (MPWs) from the exit portal. The air chambers are designed to entrap the incoming flow and induce damping behavior so as to reduce wave steepening in tunnels. Initially, qualititative comparisons are made between Helmholtz resonator and damping type air chambers. Thereafter, the quantitative assessment of the compression wave properties are checked in detail. From results, over damped air chamber shows 60 % reduction in peak over pressure for weak compression wave whereas the Helmholtz resonator and critically damped shows 35 % and 22 %, respectively. Similarly, due to the presence of over damped air chamber, 17 % reduction in maximum pressure gradient is noticed while critically damped shows close to 10 % reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To attenuate low-frequency noise in square ventilation ducts, a tunable duct silencer consisting of composite Helmholtz resonators (HR) that precisely controlled by a step motor was proposed in this paper. An analytical model based on temporal coupled mode theory (TCMT) is applied to explain the sound absorption mechanism. The design breaks the limitation that the operating frequency of a silencer is fixed after manufacturing and avoids the degradation of ventilation conditions by attaching to the duct as a side branch. By using a step motor to drive the tunable cavity HR, the silencer can achieve accurate and continuous adjustment of the operating frequency over the entire operating frequency spectrum. In the experiment, the silencer has an absorption bandwidth of 250 Hz and ranges from 710 Hz to 960 Hz. Porous material is inserted into the cavities of HR to improve the damping properties. When integrated into the simulation model, it enables the rapid design of silencer dimensions for different sound absorption frequencies. The design demonstrates a new solution for low frequency sound attenuation in ventilation ducts and provides a potential technique for the future development of active controlled duct silencers.

This paper presents the technological advancement of using friction powders to increase the absorption of acoustic liners used in the reduction of tonal noise generated by aero-engines or for other applications related to Helmholtz resonators used in noise absorption of low frequencies. The experimental research was conducted during the European project ARTEM (2017–2022), and after. This concept was inspired by the discovery made by several historians of narrow neck bottles filled with ash in the old Christian churches. These artifacts were made with the purpose of absorbing low frequency noises. Based on this creative idea, the present authors proposed a new method of noise absorption capabilities of acoustic liners filled with various types and quantities of natural and artificial powders. Considering the positive results the ARTEM project offered, COMOTI continued testing this concept by using even finer cork powders manufactured with a new technology. Measurements in Kundt tubes showed that noise absorption increased significantly in broadband for low frequencies (over 0.9 at high frequencies and 0.6 at low frequencies, 500 Hz). Some of the researched powders can be used in the field of bladed machines to reduce the aerodynamic noise of an aircraft or in the automotive industry where the reduction of low frequency noises is necessary.

Methods for measuring the acoustic characteristics of orifices have been reviewed. Comparison of three methods for evaluating of oscillation velocity in the neck of the Helmholtz resonator are presented. The first method is measurements in an impedance tube with the two-microphone method, the second is based on measuring the sound pressure in the resonator chamber, and the third is based on direct measurements of bias flow with a Pitot tube. The results of measuring the oscillation velocity in the neck of the Helmholtz resonator are presented, and show that these methods are in good agreement only within linear acoustics, but they lead to different results in nonlinear regimes characterized by high sound pressure levels.

Featured Application: Audio module of smartphone or other multimedia devices. The generating mechanisms of the mid-high-frequency peaks of a sound pressure level are theoretically investigated in this study with a side-firing front chamber. A mid-frequency peak is caused by the Helmholtz resonance phenomenon of the front chamber, and a high-frequency peak occurs owing to tube resonance. The electromagnetic–mechanical–acoustic coupling method (E–M–A) and resonance equations are used to obtain the sound pressure level and peak frequencies, respectively. Seven side-firing front chambers have been designed with respect to different tube lengths, tube widths and tube heights. Microspeaker samples with different front chamber designs are manufactured to verify the analytical results. The SPL and mid-high peak frequencies comparisons showed good agreement between the analysis and experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
