Abstract

Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is expected to be an effective breeding approach in poultry. The major histocompatibilty complex (MHC) is known to affect immune response and disease reistance, and was examined as candidate genes for association between DNA markers and antibody response. Multiband data generated with class IV probes were used to compare the efficacies of three alternative analysis, single band, multiband, and genotype.

31. The immune response of hens to multiple Escherichia coliinjections and transfer of immunoglobulins to the egg and hatched chick

Abstract

Four spaced E coliantigen injections were given to laying hens in order to cause an extended period of antibody production. Antibody could be detected as early as four days after the first antigen injection reaching a peak at the 20th day. IgM was the first antibody to be detected. From the eighth day IgG could be detected replacing the IgM fraction gradually. Antibody to E coliproduced by the hen could be detected in yolk of eggs and in chicks from the 15th day but not after the 87th day post treatment. Fluctuation of antibody transmitted by the individual hen was observed. Yolk and chick antibody titres were slightly lower than those found in the serum of the hens on the same day. Only IgG antibodies were found in yolks and serum of day-old chicks.

33. Some Characteristics of Pathogenic E. ColiStrains

Abstract

Escherichia colistrains isolated from pericardial lesions or blood of diseased chickens (317 strains) and turkeys (181 strains) and from cloacae of apparently normal chickens (88 strains) from healthy flocks were examined serologically. Among 498 strains isolated from clinical material, 61.9% were found to belong to one or another of the three serological groups, 078:K80 (which comprised 35.6% of isolates from chickens and 25.9% from turkeys), 01:K1 and 02:K1. Only 25% of isolates from healthy chickens could be placed into any of the above PK groups. Most (92%) of the strains isolated from clinical material caused septicemia and death by oral inoculation in one-day-old chicks. All the strains were non-haemolytic; a higher proportion of strains isolated from clinical material than those from healthy chicks produced colicines; the proportion of lysogenic strains was similar in both groups of isolates.

34. Pathogenic Escherichia ColiStrains Prevalent in Poultry Flocks in Israel

Abstract

On twenty-five farms 308 chickens suspected of suffering from coli septicaemia were selected to be examined for the presence of E. coli.Two hundred and three birds which had the characterisitc lesions of coli septicaemia were selected and from these 267 pathogenic strains of E. coliwere isolated and identified by biochemical and serological methods. The pathogenicity of the strains was ascertained by intraperitoneal administration to groups of chicks. The cultures of recovered E. coliwere classified into fifteen groups according to their O type. Types O78, O2 and 088 were found in 77.5 per cent of the strains.
