Abstract Long non-coding (lnc)RNAs have been shown to have central roles in stress responses, cell identity and developmental processes in multicellular organisms as well as in unicellular fungi. Previous works have shown the occurrence of lncRNAs in diatoms, namely in Phaeodactylum tricornutum, many of which being expressed under specific stress conditions. Interestingly, P. tricornutum is the only known diatom that has a demonstrated morphological plasticity, occurring in three distinct morphotypes: fusiform, triradiate and oval. Although the morphotypes are interchangeable, the fusiform is the dominant one while both the triradiate and the oval forms are less common, the latter often being associated with stress conditions such as low salinity and solid culture media, amongst others. Nonetheless, the molecular basis underpinning morphotype identity in P. tricornutum remains elusive. Using twelve previously published transcriptomic datasets originating from the three morphotypes of P. tricornutum, we sought to investigate the expression patterns of lncRNAs (lincRNAs and NATs) in these distinct morphotypes, using pairwise comparisons, in order to explore the putative involvement of these noncoding molecules in morphotype identity. We found that differentially expressed lncRNAs cluster according to morphotype, indicating that lncRNAs are not randomly expressed, but rather seem to provide a specific (noncoding) transcriptomic signature of the morphotype. We also present evidence to suggest that the major differences in DE genes (both noncoding and coding) between the stress related oval morphotype and the most common fusiform morphotype could be due, to a large extent, to the hyposaline culture conditions rather than to the morphotype itself. However, several lncRNAs associated to each one of the three morphotypes were identified, which could have a potential role in morphotype (or cell) identity in P. tricornutum, similar to what has been found in both animals and plant development.

Abstract The production, compilation, and publication of death registration records is complex and usually involves many institutions. Assessing available data and the evolution of the completeness of the data compiled based on demographic techniques and other available data sources is of great importance for countries and for having timely and disaggregated mortality estimates. In this paper, we assess whether it is reasonable, based on the available data, to assume that there is a sex difference in the completeness of male and female death records in Peru in the last 30 years. In addition, we assess how the gap may have evolved with time by applying two-census death distribution methods on health-related registries and analyzing the information from the Demographic and Health Surveys and civil registries. Our findings suggest that there is no significant sex difference in the completeness of male and female health-related registries and, consequently, the sex gap currently observed in adult mortality estimates might be overestimated.

Synthetic aperture radar is a microwave technique to extracting image information of the target. Electromagnetic waves that are reflected from the target are acquired by the aircraft or satellite receivers and sent to a ground station to be processed by applying computational demanding algorithms. Radar data streams are acquired by an aircraft or satellite and sent to a ground station to be processed in order to extract images from the data since these processing algorithms are computationally demanding. However, novel applications require real-time processing for real-time analysis and decisions and so onboard processing is necessary. Running computationally demanding algorithms on onboard embedded systems with limited energy and computational capacity is a challenge. This article proposes a configurable hardware core for the execution of the backprojection algorithm with high performance and energy efficiency. The original backprojection algorithm is restructured to expose computational parallelism and then optimized by replacing floating-point with fixed-point arithmetic. The backprojection core was integrated into a system-on-chip architecture and implemented in a field-programmable gate array. The proposed solution runs the optimized backprojection algorithm over images of sizes $512\times 512$ and $1024\times 1024$ in 0.14 s (0.41 J) and 1.11 s (3.24 J), respectively. The architecture is $2.6\times$ faster and consumes $13\times$ less energy than an embedded Jetson TX2 GPU. The solution is scalable and, therefore, a tradeoff exists between performance and utilization of resources.

Expanding access to contraception and ensuring that need for family planning is satisfied are essential for achieving universal access to reproductive healthcare services, as called for in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To quantify the gaps that remain in meeting needs among adolescents, this study provides a harmonised data set and global estimates and projections of family planning indicators for adolescents aged 15-19 years. We compiled a comprehensive dataset of family-planning indicators among women aged 15-19 from 754 nationally representative surveys. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model with country-specific annual trends to estimate contraceptive prevalence and unmet need for family planning, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs), for 185 countries, taking into account changes in proportions married or in a union and differences in sexual activity among unmarried women across countries. Among 300 million women aged 15-19 years in 2019, 29.8 million (95% UI 24.6-41.7) use any contraception, and 15.0 million (95% UI 12.1-29.2) have unmet need for family planning. Population growth and the postponement of marriage influence trends in the absolute number of adolescents using contraception or experiencing unmet need. Large gaps remain in meeting family-planning needs among adolescents. The proportion of the need satisfied by modern methods, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator 3.7.1, was 59.2% (95% UI 44.8-67.2) globally among adolescents, lower compared to 75.7% (95% UI 73.2%-78.0%) among all women age 15-49 years. It was less than one half of adolescents in need in Western Asia and Northern Africa (38.7%, 95%UI = 20.9-56.5), Central and Southern Asia (43.5%, 95%UI = 36.6-52.3), and sub-Saharan Africa (45.6%, 95%UI = 42.2-49.0). The main limitations of the study are: (i) the uncertainty surrounding estimates for countries with limited or biased data is large; and (ii) underreporting of contraceptive use and needs is likely, especially among unmarried adolescents.

Se presenta un método para el diseño arquitectónico de casas de madera. Se entrevistó a empresas de construcción y fabricación y se desarrolló un caso de estudio simulando cuatro variaciones de un proyecto, incluidos diferentes sistemas de madera (entramados ligeros, poste y viga, troncos, y madera contralaminada encolada). Sobre la base de los problemas identificados, se definió un método de diseño utilizando tablas de apoyo a las decisiones, listas de procedimientos y estrategias de optimización. Un proceso de apoyo a la decisión de criterios múltiples fue propuesto como una ayuda en la evaluación y selección de la mejor solución. Durante la fase del programa, el uso de un catálogo de tipologías con sistemas de construcción y sistemas formales promueve la optimización del proceso. En la fase de anteproyecto, la adopción de un proceso de evaluación, procedimientos de diseño específicos y estrategias preestablecidas (durabilidad, integridad de la construcción, economía) tienen como objetivo garantizar la calidad de la construcción.

Designing synthetic-aperture radar image formation systems can be challenging due to the numerous options of algorithms and devices that can be used. There are many SAR image formation algorithms, such as backprojection, matched-filter, polar format, Range–Doppler and chirp scaling algorithms. Each algorithm presents its own advantages and disadvantages considering efficiency and image quality; thus, we aim to introduce some of the most common SAR image formation algorithms and compare them based on these two aspects. Depending on the requisites of each individual system and implementation, there are many device options to choose from, for instance, FPGAs, GPUs, CPUs, many-core CPUs, and microcontrollers. We present a review of the state of the art of SAR imaging systems implementations. We also compare such implementations in terms of power consumption, execution time, and image quality for the different algorithms used.

This paper questions the contribution of social innovation to the capacity of disadvantaged communities to resist the effects of the 2008 financial crisis and its social repercussions. It does so on the basis of a study on the dynamics of urban segregation and social innovation in the context of the crisis in Catalonia (Spain). The study adopts a multi-method approach that combines statistical analysis of urban segregation dynamics in the 2001-2012 period; the mapping of social innovation practices across the region; and a cross-case comparison of six case studies. The paper highlights the structural and metropolitan character of urban segregation in the region, which has been significantly aggravated both by the crisis and the residential transformation that occurred during the years of the housing bubble. It also shows that social innovation practices are distributed very unevenly in spatial terms, being concentrated in middle-income areas with a tradition of social mobilisation. In summary, the paper states the limits of social innovation as a driver for socio-spatial cohesion in cities and stresses the need for stronger (redistributive) public policies.

A partir del análisis del caso de Cataluña, este artículo contribuye al debate en torno a la innovación social, ofreciendo una visión general sobre el desarrollo de las prácticas socialmente innovadoras y preguntándose por su potencial transformador en tres dimensiones: 1) la creación de espacios de autonomía social; 2) el empoderamiento ciudadano (particularmente de colectivos y en territorios de especial vulnerabilidad social), y 3) el desarrollo de nuevas arquitecturas institucionales que promuevan y refuercen los derechos sociales y de ciudadanía. El artículo parte de una extensa investigación que ha combinado el mapeo de la innovación social, una encuesta online y distintas entrevistas semi-estructuradas con informantes clave. En el artículo se muestran las potencialidades y los límites de la innovación social como factor de transformación social y se señala, asimismo, la necesidad de crear las condiciones institucionales propicias para su generalización y su consolidación.

A dermatomiosite juvenil (DMJ) é uma doença rara, autoimune, multissistêmica, caracterizada por uma vasculite da pele e do músculo estriado. Em idade pediátrica é a miopatia inflamatória idiopática mais frequente. Este caso consiste numa paciente do sexo feminino, de 11 anos de idade, que recorreu ao médico de família e comunidade (MFC) por erupção maculopapular da superfície dorsal das articulações metacarpo-falângicas e interfalângicas das mãos, eritema da região malar, lesões maculares da superfície extensora dos cotovelos e joelhos e diminuição da força muscular dos membros. O fato do MFC ter estado atento a estas manifestações clínicas e ter referenciado a paciente precocemente para Reumatologia por suspeita de dermatomiosite permitiu uma rápida instituição terapêutica e redução do impacto da doença. Após estabelecimento do diagnóstico, o MFC continua com um papel ativo na identificação de complicações da doença e na avaliação do seu impacto na dinâmica familiar.

Conflicts over urban planning and citizens’ mobilisation: reflections on Barcelona. The aim of this article is two-fold: to analyse how the evolution of urban planning in a context of globalisation has facilitated the emergence of conflicts over urban planning and to identify how the various forms of social mobilisation are interconnected. Specifically, the case of Can Ricart in Barcelona is discussed in order to exemplify how citizens’ committees are able to question the city’s urban development model.

In this paper, we estimate the fiscal impact on population aging in Brazil from 2005 through 2050. We focus on three key areas of public spending: education, pensions, and health care. Our projections are based on a simple model in which aggregate public expenditures are driven by changes in the age structure of the population as well as by changes in the average public benefits received per age. We assess the likely increases in public spending over the coming decades, contrasting the divergent trends in public spending on education, pensions, and health care. We also assess the magnitude of these changes in terms of growth in spending relative to GDP annually through 2050 and estimate the present value of the increase in spending. We find that changing population age structure will lead to increasing cost pressures in health care and especially in pensions. Our projections show that beginning around 2015, public spending will begin a sustained and rapid increase lasting several decades rising from 18% of GDP to reach 27% of GDP by 2050. The needs for increased investment in students will compete against those for sustaining pension benefits and facing increasing demands for health care. In particular, our projections show that an ambitious educational reform aimed at reaching the OECD level of investment per youth within a decade would amount to only about one fourth of the projected cost increases in public health and pension programs.
