An introduction to the family Bruchiaceae (Bryopsida in Australia is provided for the two genera Bruchia Schwaegr. and Trematodon Michaux together with a detailed revision, key to the species, illustrations and distribution maps for the five species of Trematodon now recognised in Australia. Of the nine species previously recorded for Australia, one species, T. amoenus (Müll. Hal.) Stone & Scott is endemic while T. flexipes Mitt. in Hook f. & Wilson, T. mackayi (R.Br. ter.) Broth. and T. suberectus Mitt., occur in Australia and New Zealand. Three species previously considered Australian endemics, T. baileyi Broth., T. brachyphyllus Müll. Hal. and T. longescens Müll. Hal. are now considered synonymous with the widespread T. longicollis Michx, the type species for the genus.

The genus Mesochaete Lindb. is known from tropical to temperate regions of the east coast of mainland Australia and Lord Howe Island. It includes two species, M. undulata Lindb. and M. taxiforme (Hampe) Watts & Whitel. Leaf size, leaf cell dimensions and aspects of leaf cross-sectional anatomy appear to be the most reliable morphological features to distinguish the species and new information is given in support of their retention as separate species. Incorrect statements in the Flora of Australia and other Australian treatments are rectified. As there are no previous illustrations of the sporophyte of M. taxiforme, or descriptions of the peristome and spores of either taxon, complete illustrations of the two Mesochaete species are presented with a supplementary description of the sporophyte and, where available, SEMs of peristomes and spores. One of the taxa, M. taxiforme, was represented by very little fruiting material. Consequently, only one sporophyte was sacrificed for the SEM work. Morphologically, peristomes and spores of both taxa appear almost identical.

We report measurements of flow transitions, from avalanching to rolling, for granular material in rotary kilns. In the avalanching mode, the surface slips periodically; in the intervals between avalanches, all particles rotate with the kiln. In the rolling mode, the surface particles slide down continuously; the material underneath the surface rotates with the kiln. Our measurements give Froude numbers (Rω2/g) for transitions, which are significantly different for sand and TiO2 powder. For the avalanching mode, we measured cycle times and deduced t12, the avalanche time; t12 was also measured directly by video photography. For kilns of diameters 0.2-0.5 m, both methods give t12, of order 1-2 sec and it appears to be proportional to √l, l being the chord length of the granular bed, the maximum distance of fall for avalanche material. Simple theory, assuming the avalanche particles slide down a frictional surface, gives fair estimates of t12 and may be a basis for predicting avalanche-to-rolling transitions in large industrial kilns.

Cowden disease (CD) is a rare autosomal dominant disease with variable expression, affecting a number of systems in the form of multiple hamartomatous neoplasms of ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal origin1 (multiple hamartoma neoplasia syndrome). CD usually presents in late adolescence and is caused by a germ mutation in the PTEN gene.2 Classically, the mucocutaneous features of CD are tricholemmomas, oral fibromas, acral keratoses, palmar pits, and gingival and palatal papules. These mucocutaneous signs are important markers for systemic findings; in particular breast carcinoma (20%), which is often bilateral,3,4 thyroid carcinoma (8%) and endometrial carcinomas.2 Various manifestations of the central nervous system (mental retardation,5 seizures, ganglinoneuromas), musculoskeletal system (craniomegaly, kyphoscoliosis and high arched palate) and gastrointestinal system (multiple hamartomatous polyps, adenocarcinomas arising in the polyps) are well documented. In addition, ovarian cysts and menstrual abnormalities are known to occur in the female genital tract.6 Bannayan–Ruvalcaba–Riley syndrome has many clinical features in common with CD, including mucocutaneous manifestations and an increased risk of gastrointestinal polyps and malignancy. …

The identification of robust endotypes—disease subgroups of clinical relevance—is fundamental to stratified medicine. We hypothesized that HLA-C∗06:02 status, the major genetic determinant of psoriasis, defines a psoriasis endotype of clinical relevance. Using two United Kingdom–based cross-sectional datasets—an observational severe-psoriasis study (Biomarkers of Systemic Treatment Outcomes in Psoriasis; n = 3,767) and a large population-based bioresource (UK Biobank, including n = 5,519 individuals with psoriasis)—we compared demographic, environmental, and clinical variables of interest in HLA-C∗06:02–positive (one or two copies of the HLA-C∗06:02 allele) with those in HLA-C∗06:02‒negative (no copies) individuals of European ancestry. We used multivariable regression analyses to account for mediation effects established a priori. We confirm previous observations that HLA-C∗06:02–positive status is associated with earlier age of psoriasis onset and extend findings to reveal an association with disease expressivity in females (Biomarkers of Systemic Treatment Outcomes in Psoriasis: P = 2.7 × 10 –14, UK Biobank: P = 1.0 × 10 –8). We also show HLA-C∗06:02–negative status to be associated with characteristic clinical features (large plaque disease, OR for HLA-C∗06:02 = 0.73, P = 7.4 × 10 –4; nail involvement, OR = 0.70, P = 2.4 × 10 –6); higher central adiposity (Biomarkers of Systemic Treatment Outcomes in Psoriasis: waist circumference difference of 2.0 cm, P = 8.4 × 10 –4; UK Biobank: waist circumference difference of 1.4 cm, P = 1.5 × 10 –4), especially in women; and a higher prevalence of other cardiometabolic comorbidities. These findings extend the clinical phenotype delineated by HLA-C∗06:02 and highlight its potential as an important biomarker to consider in future multimarker stratified medicine approaches.
