Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a ubiquitous virus that often causes hospitalization of children in western countries. Previously, we investigated the cause of fever of 600 febrile hospitalized children in Gabon, and in 91 cases the causative pathogen was not determined. In this study, we assessed HHV-6 infection as potential cause of hospitalization in this group. METHODS: Blood samples were assessed for HHV-6 using real-time quantitative PCR. Three groups were investigated: (1) group of interest: 91 hospitalized children with febrile illness without a diagnosed causing pathogen; (2) hospitalized control: 91 age-matched children hospitalized with febrile illness with a potentially disease-causing pathogen identified; both groups were recruited at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon and (3) healthy control: 91 healthy children from the same area. RESULTS: Samples from 273 children were assessed. Age range was two months to 14 years, median (IQR) age was 36 (12-71) months; 52% were female. HHV-6 was detected in 64% (58/91), 41% (37/91), and 26% (24/91) of the samples from groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively; with statistically significant odds of being infected with HHV-6 in group 1 (OR = 4.62, 95% CI [2.46, 8.90]). Only HHV-6B was detected. CONCLUSIONS: Although tropical diseases account for a large proportion of children's hospitalizations, considering common childhood diseases such as HHV-6 when diagnosing febrile illnesses in pediatric populations in tropical countries is of importance., 01 december 2023

Die meisten Beiträge und Ideen, welche im Verlauf des Archäologiestudiums zu Papier gebracht werden, stranden in privaten Ordnern und Schubladen. Es fehlt an geeigneten Plattformen, welche es Studierenden ermöglicht ihre Forschungsergebnisse wissenschaftlich begutachten zu lassen und einem interessierten Publikum vorzustellen. Die Herausgeberschaft machte es sich zum Ziel, diese Lücke zu schliessen und rief kurzerhand die Studentischen Archäologischen Forschungstagungen (SAFT) ins Leben. Der vorliegende Band umfasst Beiträge, welche an der 1. Forschungstagung vom 16. März 2019 an der Universität Zürich vorgestellt und anschliessend verschriftlicht wurden.

Item does not contain fulltext, Boromycin is a boron-containing macrolide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces antibioticus with potent activity against certain viruses, Gram-positive bacteria and protozoan parasites. Most antimalarial antibiotics affect plasmodial organelles of prokaryotic origin and have a relatively slow onset of action. They are used for malaria prophylaxis and for the treatment of malaria when combined to a fast-acting drug. Despite the success of artemisinin combination therapies, the current gold standard treatment, new alternatives are constantly needed due to the ability of malaria parasites to become resistant to almost all drugs that are in heavy clinical use. In vitro antiplasmodial activity screens of tetracyclines (omadacycline, sarecycline, methacycline, demeclocycline, lymecycline, meclocycline), macrolides (oleandomycin, boromycin, josamycin, troleandomycin), and control drugs (chloroquine, clindamycin, doxycycline, minocycline, eravacycline) revealed boromycin as highly potent against Plasmodium falciparum and the zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi. In contrast to tetracyclines, boromycin rapidly killed asexual stages of both Plasmodium species already at low concentrations (~ 1 nM) including multidrug resistant P. falciparum strains (Dd2, K1, 7G8). In addition, boromycin was active against P. falciparum stage V gametocytes at a low nanomolar range (IC(50): 8.5 ± 3.6 nM). Assessment of the mode of action excluded the apicoplast as the main target. Although there was an ionophoric activity on potassium channels, the effect was too low to explain the drug´s antiplasmodial activity. Boromycin is a promising antimalarial candidate with activity against multiple life cycle stages of the parasite.

Contains fulltext : 244052.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Saliva is a body fluid with hitherto unused potential for the assessment of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Specific antibodies can indicate a past SARS-CoV-2 infection and allow to estimate the proportion of individuals with a potential protective immunity. First, we carefully characterized plasma samples obtained from adult control groups with and without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection using certified reference ELISAs. Simultaneously collected saliva samples of confirmed convalescent and negative individuals where then used to validate the herein newly developed ELISA for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in saliva. The saliva ELISA was applied to assess SARS-CoV-2 exposure in young children (N = 837) in the age between 1 and 10 years in Tübingen, Germany, towards the end of the first pandemic year 2020. Sensitivity and specificity of the new saliva ELISA was 87% and 100%, respectively. With 12% of all Tübingen children sampled via their respective educational institutions, estimates of SARS-CoV-2 antibody prevalence was 1.6%. Interestingly, only 0.4% preschool kids were positive compared to 3.0% of primary school children. Less than 20% of positive children self-reported symptoms within two months prior to saliva sampling that could be associated - but not exclusively - with a SARS-CoV-2 infection. The saliva ELISA is a valid and suitable protocol to enable population-based surveys for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Using non-invasive sampling and saliva ELISA testing, we found that prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was significantly lower in young children than in primary school children.

Early experimentation was transformed into expertise, and historical performance practice has grown to become a multi-million dollar industry. The lute is a principal player on this revivalist stage and is now taught in many conservatories and music academies throughout the world. This book, based on a conference held in Bremen in September 2019, explores themes that pertain to teaching an ancient instrument in a modern institutional setting and the pedagogical challenges for both teaching and learning. It encompasses a discussion of aspects of modern teaching practice (Pascale Boquet, Jakob Lindberg, John Griffiths), the inner workings of historical technique (Paul O’Dette, Nigel North), improvisation and continuo playing (Joachim Held, Xavier Díaz-Latorre, Bor Zuljan), using the right instrument (Michael Lowe), and the continuing exploration of newly rediscovered repertoire (Franco Pavan)."
