The present study was conducted to investigate the interaction of biofloc water supplementations and potential zooplankton abundance and structure in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus -rearing systems on zootechnical performance and biochemical indicators. Nile tilapia juveniles (13.30 g and 9.50 cm) were randomly distributed into 18 fiberglass tanks (500 L/tank with a stocking density of 40 fish/tank) to start the feeding experiment for 60 days. Fish weights were recorded weekly to adjust the feeding rate at 3% of their biomass using a commercial diet. Compared to the control group (T
0 , zero biofloc water supplementation), the influence of five biofloc supplementation levels was applied as follows: 14.2, 28.4, 42.6, 56.8, and 71 g L−1 (T1 , T2 , T3 , T4 , and T5 , respectively). The biofloc was prepared in an external fermentor fiberglass tank (300 L) and added to the fish tanks to keep the biofloc levels constant during the experiment. After 30 and 60 days of the experiment, the number of zooplankton was 46,501 and 24,537 Ind. L−1 , respectively, which included four families (Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera, and free-living nematodes) with the domination of family Rotifera at 81.65% and 93.89%, respectively. The water quality indicated was within the standard values recommended for fish culture. Compared to those of the control group, the values of growth performance, whole-body biochemical composition, and blood biochemical indicators were significantly higher in biofloc groups than in the control group. Group T3 achieved the highest significant growth performance values. In comparison with the control group, T3 achieved the lowest number of cultures and the abundance of small invertebrate prey after 60 days of culture. The fish reared in groups T0 and T1 showed the highest significant urea content and the highest concentrations of liver function enzyme activities. Interestingly, compared to all groups, T3 achieved the best feed conversion ratio (FCR) value (1.68). Principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson's correlation coefficient confidence (PCCC) clarified a close positive relationship between T0 and T3 with the total individual, Rotifera abundance, and FCR. The highest PCCC value with T0 was in group T3 (0.947). In conclusion, biofloc supplementation (42.6 g L−1 ) showed a sustainable clean aquadiet strategy and significantly improved Nile tilapia growth and FCR with regard to the culture of small prey invertebrates for 60 days. The use of gamma irradiation to promote phytochemical components in various plants, including microalgae, has gained increasing attention in recent years. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the metabolic profiling of bioactive phytochemical constituents and to assess antioxidant activities in Arthrospira platensis after treatment with γ-irradiation at a dose of 700 Gy following 20 days of growth. The data from this study revealed a significant increase in antioxidant capacities, including DPPH., FRAP, ABTS.+, total antioxidant capacity, proanthocyanidins, saponins, β-carotene, protein, amino acids, and polyphenol fractions (flavonoids and phenolics) in γ-irradiated A. platensis compared to the control samples. Protein constituents typically include 24 standard amino acids, but some amino acids (such as cysteine and lysine) were not detected in A. platensis. However, the alga contains eighteen essential amino acids in sufficient concentrations. In this investigation, metabolomic profiling revealed the identification and quantification of fifteen polyphenol fractions (ten phenolics and five flavonoids) in A. platensis. This study supports the potential health benefits of incorporating metabolites from γ-irradiated A. platensis into functional foods, medicinal foods, and nutritional supplements, offering numerous advantages for the food industry. Therefore, the use of γ-irradiated A. platensis metabolites may contribute, directly or indirectly, to promoting health, as these metabolites are natural, safe, affordable, accessible, and easy to obtain. The New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) has allocated EGP 17.5 billion for the initial development of El-Warrak Island, encompassing green spaces, utilities, roads, residential units, and resident compensation. Thus, this research investigated the interplay between natural and anthropogenic factors due to the development affecting zooplankton dynamics to maintain ecological equilibrium and uphold species diversity. Four stations were strategically selected to represent all habitats surrounding El-Warrak Island. Findings revealed consistent water temperatures with minimal fluctuations, stable pH values with slight seasonal variations, and minor spatial and seasonal changes in EC and TDS values. The zooplankton community in the River Nile consisted of Rotifera, Protozoa, Copepoda, Cladocera, and free-living Nematoda, with an average total density of 595,297 ind. m-3 . Notably, Rotifera constituted the majority, representing 91.48% of the total zooplankton density. Station 1 exhibited the lowest zooplankton density, while Station 4 recorded the highest population density, averaging 198,868 and 950,574 ind. m-3, respectively. Population density peaked in the cold season and decreased to its lowest level in the hot season. Thirteen distinct rotifer species were identified, with Keratella cochlearis being the most populous. The diversity index (H`) revealed that Station 1 exhibited the highest diversity (H' = 2.2). Moreover, the saprobic index values for stations 1, 2, 3, and 4 were determined to be 1.8, 1.7, 1.7, and 1.7, respectively, indicating a β - mesosaprobic condition at the investigated sites. In conclusion, intensive agricultural and domestic activities have been identified as significant contributors to high organic pollutant levels, impacting ecological health, and diminishing zooplankton species diversity. Therefore, effective mitigation and treatment methods should be implemented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STRIPED mullet , *GRAY mullets , *COST benefit analysis , *BODIES of water , *LAKES - Abstract
Determining appropriate methods to release fish into confined water bodies such as lakes necessitates an awareness of the potential impact on local fish and the ecosystem in general, as well as a cost-benefit analysis. The purpose of this study was to apply various release strategies boosting the survival rate (%) of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) fingerlings in the lower part of Wadi El-Rayan Lake (WRL) located in Al-Fayoum Governorate, Egypt. This study involved two experiments. The first experiment involved nursing and rearing grey mullet fingerlings in net enclosures (NE-CWT) and an earthen pond for 40 days before releasing them into the WRL. In the second experiment, three groups were studied before being released into the WRL: the first group underwent a nursing experiment (nursing for 40 days for acclimatization), the second group underwent grow out rearing for 334 days, and the third group (control group, continued) was released directly into the WRL, without extended rearing, acclimatization, or CWT recovery. During the first experiment, the growth performance, feed utilization, and survival rates of M. cephalus fingerlings were recorded. Throughout the second experiment, the fishermen collected monthly samples from the WRL to monitor the growth and survival rates of M. cephalus. The data revealed that fish temporarily held in NE-CWT had significantly higher (P< 0.05) final body weight, total weight gain, specific growth rate, and survival rate. Growth trends were similar for the fish temporarily held in EP-CWT. These findings emphasized the significance of short-term rearing and acclimation prior to release for improving the performance parameters of mullet seed compared to direct release into the lake. The study results can be used to increase the effectiveness of future grey mullet (M. cephalus) stockings in the Egyptian lakes. Transferring the results to fishermen's associations in Egypt will provide these groups more time to evaluate and improve the stock enhancement technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: This international study aimed to assess: 1) the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative COVID-19 among patients with hip fracture, 2) the effect on 30-day mortality, and 3) clinical factors associated with the infection and with mortality in COVID-19-positive patients. Methods: A multicentre collaboration among 112 centres in 14 countries collected data on all patients presenting with a hip fracture between 1st March-31st May 2020. Demographics, residence, place of injury, presentation blood tests, Nottingham Hip Fracture Score, time to surgery, management, ASA grade, length of stay, COVID-19 and 30-day mortality status were recorded. Results: A total of 7090 patients were included, with a mean age of 82.2 (range 50–104) years and 4959 (69.9%) being female. Of 651 (9.2%) patients diagnosed with COVID-19, 225 (34.6%) were positive at presentation and 426 (65.4%) were positive postoperatively. Positive COVID-19 status was independently associated with male sex (odds ratio (OR) 1.38, p = 0.001), residential care (OR 2.15, p < 0.001), inpatient fall (OR 2.23, p = 0.003), cancer (OR 0.63, p = 0.009), ASA grades 4 (OR 1.59, p = 0.008) or 5 (OR 8.28, p < 0.001), and longer admission (OR 1.06 for each increasing day, p < 0.001). Patients with COVID-19 at any time had a significantly lower chance of 30-day survival versus those without COVID-19 (72.7% versus 92.6%, p < 0.001). COVID-19 was independently associated with an increased 30-day mortality risk (hazard ratio (HR) 2.83, p < 0.001). Increasing age (HR 1.03, p = 0.028), male sex (HR 2.35, p < 0.001), renal disease (HR 1.53, p = 0.017), and pulmonary disease (HR 1.45, p = 0.039) were independently associated with a higher 30-day mortality risk in patients with COVID-19 when adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: The prevalence of COVID-19 in hip fracture patients during the first wave of the pandemic was 9%, and was independently associated with a three-fold increased 30-day mortality risk. Among COVID-19-positive patients, those who were older, male, with renal or pulmonary disease had a significantly higher 30-day mortality risk.

ARTIFICIAL seawater ,DUNALIELLA salina ,SALINE water conversion ,CHLORELLA vulgaris ,SPECIES ,SCENEDESMUS - Abstract
Existing water resources cannot satisfy human needs due to an increase in population, the growth of urbanization, and the scarcity of freshwater sources worldwide. Utilizing plant species, microbes, algae, or a mix of these can be used to effectively desalinate seawater through biological processes. The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of seawater desalination by using green microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus quadricauda, and Dunaliella salina) and the potential for combining it with the manufacture of biodiesel. The results showed that Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda were significant for the desalination of seawater. The TDS removal percent reached 82% and 79% during the culturing of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda (respectively), without adding any nutrients while the removal percent reached 82% and 80% (respectively), during culturing with adding nutrients. The results of Dunaliella salina showed that there is no significant difference in the desalination of seawater. Characterization of the algal biodiesel obtained from Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda revealed that it fits the international specifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NILE tilapia ,MEDICINAL plants ,WATER quality ,PLANT growth ,SPEARMINT ,BASIL - Abstract
Aquacultural scholars and experts should create new plans to sustain aquaculture, with a minimum negative impact on the environment since aquaculture activity affects the environment and is further complicated by the paucity of good-quality water and land. As a result, a symbiotic experiment involving fish and plants was carried out to ascertain how the two organisms affected one another. The deep Flow Technique was created as a hydroponic system in its simplest form. Mentha spicata L. (mint) at 46 cm TL, Ocimum basilicum L. (basil) at 43.5 cm TL, Origanum majorana (marjoram) at 37 cm TL, Salvia Rosmarinus (rosemary) at 33 cm TL, and Origanum syriacum (thyme) at 34.7 cm TL were the plants utilized in this experiment. 400 fish/pond (1.3 g wet weight) of the Oreochromis niloticus L. species of tilapia fingerlings were stocked. A commercial feed for specific species (with a crude protein content of 25 percent) was represented as the diet in this experiment. Four plants and a control treatment comprised the five treatments, each of which had three replicates. The findings showed that using medicinal herbs improved the quality of the water, especially when compared to un-ionized ammonia (NH3) values in both basil and marjoram. Basil and mint ponds had the greatest fish performance results without any discernible variations, while rosemary ponds had the best survival rate at 96.25%. The performance of some medicinal plants as well as the purity of the water is both benefited by symbiotic relationships with both fish and plants. In order to assess the impact of intense culture on the effectiveness of this program, more studies must be conducted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

Background: Peribulbar anesthesia is frequently used in cataract surgeries. Compared to retrobulbar anesthesia, this approach is associated with less significant consequences. However, it has the disadvantages of a slower onset of orbital akinesia and the frequent requirement for block supplementation. Aim of the Work: To evaluate the effect of addition of magnesium sulfate and rocuronium to standard local anesthetics mixture on the time of onset of globe and lid akinesia and corneal anesthesia for peribulbar block in ophthalmic surgeries. Patients and Methods: This Prospective Double-blinded Randomized Study was carried out in the ophthalmic surgery unit, Ain Shams university hospital from January 2019 to April 2020. After institutional Ethical Board approval and obtaining written informed patients' consents, 75 patients from both sexes, ASA physical status I-III, aged 40-80 years and having an Axial globe length less than or equals 26 mm scheduled for cataract surgery under peribulbar block were included in the study. Results: Our study found statistically significant more rapid onset of action (mean time to start surgery) in rocuronium group (7.00±1.22) than control group and magnesium sulfate group (9.00±1.47 and 9.00±1.15) respectively, (p < 0.001); Moreover, no statistically significant difference was reported between control group and magnesium sulfate group. In addition, no significant difference was reported regarding duration of surgery between groups Conclusion: Adding Rocuronium to local anesthetic mixture in peribulbar block during cataract surgery enhances ocular akinesia and corneal anesthesia and reduces the need for supplementary injections with no side effects and that was significantly better than Magnesium sulfate in term of rapid onset and time needed to achieve adequate condition to begin surgery. However, adding Magnesium sulfate showing good results regarding akinesia, corneal anesthesia and need for supplementary injections but it did not significantly fasten the onset of block and hence the time to start surgery. Heavy Metals as Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are toxic and harmful to humans and animals. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of three concentrations of an algal mixture of Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris in chelating of the mixture of cadmium chloride and lead nitrate in the liver of seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Na+/K+-ATPase, the total cytochrome P450 (CYP 450), antioxidant enzymes Superoxide dismutase SOD, Catalase CAT, Glutathione peroxidase Gpx, and non-enzymatic antioxidant metallothionein MTs were measured as biomarkers. n the experimental diets, the first group was fed with a basal diet and lived in seawater (control 1); in other groups, heavy metals (0.003 mg/l of CdCl2 + 0.003 mg/l Pb(NO3)2 were added and fed a basal diet (control 2), or 3% of diet supplemented with the algal mixture of Spirulina and Chlorella in the ratio (1: 1) (diet 1), 5% of a diet with the algal mix (diet 2), and 7% of a diet with the algal mixture (diet 3). Fish were fed 5% of the average body weight three times a day. There is a significant decrease in the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase (P <0.05) between (control 1) and the other groups. The groups of diets 2 and 3 showed significant improvements in the value of Na+/K+-ATPase compared to the control "1" group. The CYP is highly induced in the control "2" compared to the control "1" or other groups. Diet "3" shows a minimum significance of CYP concentration than the control "2". There is a significant increase in SOD and Gpx activities in the liver of treated fishes (diets 2 and 3) compared to the control "2". The results reveal that the best supplement of the algal mixture appears in the concentration of 7% (diet 3). This concentration repairs the ionic disturbance and oxidative stress of lead and cadmium toxicity and increases the antioxidant activities responsible for reactive oxygen species ROS scavenging. The challenge today is to incorporate phytoplankton as a source of protein for food and feed to higher organisms in the food chain. The growth response and total biochemical content of three pure phytoplankton cultures to different ranges of pH in the synthetic medium were explored under controlled laboratory conditions. The tested species were Chlorella vulgaris Beyerinck [Beijerinck], Nannochloropsis oculata (Droop) D.J.Hibberdand Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turpin) Brébisson. Growth response was determined from acidic to alkaline conditions by chlorophyll values, total biochemical content, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. The results indicated that the tested species showed different growth patterns and total biochemical content under the same incubation conditions. Generally, the highest biochemical content was total protein followed by carbohydrates and lipids. At pH (11) of the medium the highest protein peak of Chlorella vulgaris was (68.1mgl-1) and Nannochloropsis oculata was (94.6mgl-1). The maximum protein content of Scenedesmus quadricauda (86.7mgl-1) recorded at pH (9) of the medium. The best pH values for growth of tested species were pH (7) for Chlorella vulgaris and pH (9) for Nannochloropsis oculata and Scenedesmus quadricauda. A major spot on the highly positive correlation between Nannochloropsis oculata optimum growth and its protein contents (r= 0.87) which indicate that pH (9) of the medium may be the best one in Nannochloropsis oculata large mass production. The highest carbohydrates and lipids content were detected at acidic conditions of the medium. This study assesses the best pH conditions needed for optimum growth of particular species to further applying in commercial mass production to get maximum protein yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SALINITY ,BLOOD proteins ,PELLETED feed ,WATER quality ,SERUM - Abstract
A study was performed to examine the effects of salinity on water quality, fish performance, carcass composition and haemato‐biochemical parameters in juvenile meagre, Argyrosomus regius. Fish (5.0 g) were stocked in fibreglass tanks at four salinity levels: 8‰, 16‰, 24‰ and 32‰, and fed a pelleted diet (47/17 protein/lipid) for 56 days. Results indicated that the growth, feed utilization, carcass composition and haemato‐biochemical parameters of meagre gradually improved with the increase in salinity up to 24‰ and then significantly (p ≤.05) decreased at 32‰. The survival per cent showed a significant decrease when A. regius exposed to 8‰ salinity. An improvement with 32%, 47% and 34.1% of FCR, protein productive value and energy utilization was detected at 24‰ compared with 8‰ salinity respectively. The highest content of protein and the lowest of lipids were recorded in fish carcass at 24‰ compared with the opposite trend at 8‰ salinity. The 24‰ salinity treatment exhibited the highest value of haemoglobin (4.9 g/dl) and the lowest ratio (0.73) of albumin/globulin. The serum total protein, albumin and globulin were significantly higher at 24‰ and 32‰ salinity than those at 8‰ and 16‰ salinity groups. These findings indicate that 24‰ salinity level might be the best for meagre. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SPARUS aurata , *MARICULTURE , *PERFORMANCE evaluation , *WATER quality , *SEAWATER , *FISH stocking - Abstract
The objective of the present research is to assess the performance of re-used mariculture system on growth rate and percent survival of S. aurata and D. labrax fish; more over to evaluate water quality, which affects fish production. The results revealed that the degree of re-used sea water was 96.7% which equal 65 L daily and the new water added /Kg fish was 8.8 L/Kg juvenile S. aurata daily and 3.28 L/Kg fries D. labrax daily. The physicochemical and biological water measurement (T°c, pH, S%, DO, NH3, NH4 +, NO2 -, NO3 - and BOD) are in acceptable range in the two experiments for S. aurata and D. labrax. The result explained that the survival rate were 96% and 91% for S. aurata and 76.7% and 81.6% for D. Labrax in Tank1 and Tank2 respectively. The growth performance parameters (WG, ADG, SGR, FCR, PER and K) were reported for the two experiments. The length-weight relationship for S. aurata indicate that the high length, the increase in weight with R² = 0.9596 and 0.9966 for Tank1 and Tank2 comparing with 0.8474 for control. Therefore the significant success of rearing S. aurata and D. labrax in RMS for mini farm was achieved in water management by improving the efficiency of biological filter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
