Background: The co-occurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) and cervical spondylosis (CS) may not only intensify symptoms but also complicate the management of these disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the preferred modality for detecting spinal cord lesions; however, there is limited evidence assessing myelopathy in concurrent CS and MS. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the association between CS and its effects on the spinal cord, as well as their impact on enhancing MS cervical lesions. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 104 MS patients between 2019 and 2021. Data collected included age, gender, duration and phenotype of MS, and the Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Magnetic resonance imaging images were obtained and analyzed for the presence of cervical spondylosis and demyelinated cervical plaques (active/inactive). Multiple sclerosis plaques were evaluated based on their extension, enhancement, and cervical location. Cervical spondylosis was categorized into four grades using the Muhle scale. Additionally, the spinal cord cross-sectional area (SC - CSA) was measured at the C2 - C3 cervical spine level. Results: The severity of cervical spondylosis was associated with older age (P-value < 0.001), longer duration of MS (P-value = 0.04), more severe EDSS scores (P-value = 0.03), and a lower C2 - C3 CS-CSA (P-value < 0.001). However, no significant associations were found with gender (P-value = 0.90), MS plaques activity (P-value = 0.25), or extension (P-value = 0.13). Conclusions: The study findings indicate that the severity of CS is associated with age, MS duration, EDSS, and the C2 - C3 cervical spine cross-sectional area. However, the study did not find evidence supporting a relationship between CS and the extension or activity of MS plaques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether mammographic and sonographic features of malignant breast lesions are correlated with tumor histologic grade, hormonal receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and Ki-67 status. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, imaging and histopathological findings of 187 biopsy-proven breast cancer cases from November 2019 to February 2021 were reviewed. The Chi-square test was used to examine the potential correlation between mammographic and sonographic characteristics with histopathological features such as hormonal receptor, HER2 status, Ki-67 labeling index, and histological grade. Results: We observed that microlobulated margin as well as oval/round morphology in mammograms correlate with triple-negative intrinsic subtype (P = 0.006 and P = 0.004). The presence of calcification in sonography was significantly higher in the luminal-B subtype (P = 0.002). Furthermore, ill-defined margins in mammography were significantly higher in amplified HER2 expression (P = 0.004) in the same manner as an oval/round shape in higher levels of Ki-67 (P = 0.030). Conclusion: Mammography and sonography features may reflect the biological behavior of various subtypes of breast cancer and can detect more aggressive breast cancers that can mimic benign or less malignant appearing lesions. These findings may be an excellent predictor for some subtypes like triple-negative breast cancer. Studying the range of these imaging characteristics may help in better understanding the prognosis, choosing a treatment strategy, and predicting response to treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Computed tomography (CT) of the brain is associated with radiation exposure to the lens of the eyes. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize scan settings to keep radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable without compromising diagnostic image information. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the five practical techniques for lowering eye radiation exposure and their effects on diagnostic image quality in pediatric brain CT. Methods: The following scan protocols were performed: reference scan, 0.06-mm Pbeq bismuth shield, 30% globally lowering tube current (GLTC), reducing tube voltage (RTV) from 120 to 90 kVp, gantry tilting, and combination of gantry tilting with bismuth shielding. Radiation measurements were performed using thermoluminescence dosimeters. Objective and subjective image quality was evaluated. Results: All strategies significantly reduced eye dose, and increased the posterior fossa artifact index and the temporal lobe artifact index, relative to the reference scan. GLTC and RTV increased image noise, leading to a decrease signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio. Except for bismuth shielding, subjective image quality was relatively the same as the reference scan. Conclusions: Gantry tilting may be the most effective method for reducing eye radiation exposure in pediatric brain CT. When the scanner does not support gantry tilting, GLTC might be an alternative. MXenes and MXene-based materials exhibited unique properties such as remarkable conductivity, hydrophilicity, high ion transport features, low diffusion barrier, biocompatibility, and suitable surface area, which make them promising candidates for sensing and imaging applications in the field of biomedicine (especially cancer diagnosis/imaging), analytical chemistry, and (bio)sensing. These two-dimensional (2D) materials with suitable surface functionalization or modification can be considered as the next-generation structures for cancer diagnosis with high biocompatibility, stability, and adoption capacity. In the field of cancer diagnosis and imaging, MXenes with great potentials and unique physicochemical structures should be further evaluated by researchers, especially for their biosafety, biocompatibility, stability, and biodegradability. Future studies should move toward specific clinical evaluations as well as industrial and up-scalable production of innovative functionalized MXenes and MXene-based materials with efficient cancer diagnostic potentials. In this review, recent advances related to the cancer diagnostic applications of MXenes and MXene-based materials are highlighted, focusing on current challenges and future perspectives. Objectives: Shear wave elastography (SWE) quantitatively determines the nature of the breast lesions. Few previous studies have compared the diagnostic value of this modality with other imaging techniques. The present study aimed to compare the diagnostic value of SWE with that of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting the nature of the breast masses. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 80 patients with breast lumps who had Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) score of three or higher based on mammography and/or screening ultrasonography, underwent 3D SWE and MRI. The lesions were classified according to MRI BI-RADS scoring; Mean elasticity (Emean) and elasticity ratio (Eratio) for each lesion were also determined by SWE. The results of these two modalities were compared with histopathologic diagnosis as the gold standard method; diagnostic value and diagnostic agreement were then calculated. Results: Of the masses, 46.2% were histopathologically proven to be malignant. The Emean for benign and malignant masses was 34.04 ± 19.51 kPa and 161.92 ± 58.14 kPa, respectively. Both modalities had diagnostic agreement with histopathologic results (p<0.001). Kappa coefficient was 0.87 for SWE and 0.42 for MRI. The sensitivity of both methods was 94.59% (95% CI: 81.81–99.34), while the specificity and accuracy were 48.84% [95% CI: 33.31–64.54] and 70.0% [95% CI: 58.72–79.74] for MRI, and 93.02% [95% CI: 80.94–98.54] and 93.75% [95% CI: 86.01–97.94] for SWE. Conclusions: SWE has better diagnostic value in terms of determining the nature of the breast masses. SWE can increase the diagnostic function of differentiating benign masses from malignant ones.
