Osbourn Trough is a key piece in an outstanding problem: do the Ontong Java, Manihiki and Hikurangi large igneous provinces represent a single ~100 million km3 magmatic pulse? Bathymetric mapping of a 145-km-wide swath across the ∼900-km-long Osbourn Trough revealed three segments offset by 23–35-km-long basins that strike perpendicular to the trough axis. Each segment comprises a 10–15-km-wide axial valley bounded by 300–500-m-high ridge mountains, has inside corner highs at its NW and SE margins that rise 1000–1200 m above the axial valley, and has a flanking set of subparallel abyssal hills. Dredging on steep escarpments successfully penetrated thick sediments and recovered Fe–Mn oxyhydroxide-encrusted volcaniclastic breccias. Lava clasts within the breccias have undergone variable degrees of marine weathering, leading to strong enrichment in most alkali elements and the light REE (except Ce). Nevertheless, their immobile element concentrations are consistently MORB-like and they plot within the MORB fields of tectonic discrimination diagrams. Isotope analyses indicate an affinity with Pacific MORB-source mantle. Both the morphology of Osbourn Trough and geochemistry of its lavas establish that it represents an extinct spreading ridge system. The trough is nearly equidistant (1750 km vs. 1550 km) from the Manihiki and Hikurangi Plateaus, which we interpret as remnants of a formerly contiguous Ontong Java–Manihiki–Hikurangi large igneous province. Inception of the Osbourn spreading ridge was coincident with reorganization of the former Pacific–Phoenix–Farallon spreading system and mega-plateau fragmentation at ∼118 Ma. Spreading across Osbourn Trough ceased when the Hikurangi Plateau collided with and blocked a southward-dipping subduction system developed along the Chatham Rise (eastern New Zealand) sector of the Gondwana margin at ∼86 Ma.

Submarine hydrothermal vents and associated sealfoor mineralization on the Tonga arc have been found for the first time, in the summit calderas of two shallow-water volcanoes, greatly extending the known areas and diversity of seafloor hydrothermal activity in the western Pacific region. The highest temperature vents (245-265 degrees C) occur at water depths of 385-540 m near the summit of one volcano at 24 degrees S. The vents are spatially related to basaltic dike swarms exposed at a summit cone and in the caldera walls. Clusters of large (to 10 m high) barite, anhydrite, and sulfide chimneys on the summit cone are vigorously discharging clear hydrothermal fluids with temperatures on the seawater boiling curve. There is abundant evidence of phase separation, which can be seen as flame-like jets of steam (H2O vapor) at the chimney orifices. Pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite line the interiors of the highest temperature vents, similar to black smoker chimneys on the mid-ocean ridges.

Apart from being popular holiday destinations, oceanic-island volcanoes such as Hawaii, Tahiti, or the Canaries provide magmas that yield valuable information about the interior of our planet. Until recently, studies have concentrated on the easily accessible, subaerial parts of the volcanoes, largely ignoring their earlier-formed, submarine parts. These submarine parts, however, provide critical information about how the mantle begins to melt and about the lowest-melting-point mantle components—information not available from the subaerial volcanoes but highly relevant for the chemical evolution of the whole mantle. We present here compositional information from small (<500 m) volcanoes on the seafloor near Tahiti and Pitcairn Islands and show that these small volcanoes erupt only highly differentiated magmas. These early melts are derived exclusively from the most trace element–enriched, isotopically extreme mantle component, evidence that this component has the lowest melting temperature and is the first product of melting of a new batch of mantle. The geochemical mantle components (enriched mantle EM-I, EM-II) proposed in the 1980s to explain the compositional variations among oceanic volcanoes worldwide appear in reality to represent distinct rock masses in the mantle.

How well do we know the composition of oceanic crust? Countless studies have described the occurrence of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) at spreading centers, and few would argue that the bulk composition of oceanic crust is other than basaltic. Nevertheless, silicic volcanism (>55 wt.% SiO2) does occur along part of the northern East Pacific Rise (10.5°N; Thompson et al. [1989]),on the 095° propagator of the Galápagos Spreading Center [Clague et al., 1981],and was recently discovered on the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) near its intersection with the Foundation seamount chain [Hekinian et al., 1997, 1999]. Silicic lavas were recovered from a 290-km-long section of the northern PAR adjacent to the active Foundation plume (Figure 1) during cruise 157 of the F/S Sonne, which took place in June and July 2001. Furthermore, widespread hydrothermal activity indicates that the volcanogenic massive sulfidesilicic lava association is not only restricted to subduction and back arc settings.
