Abstract

Addressing ongoing biodiversity loss requires collaboration between conservation scientists and practitioners. However, such collaboration has proved challenging. Despite the potential importance of tracking animal movements for conservation, reviews of the tracking literature have identified a gap between the academic discipline of movement ecology and its application to biodiversity conservation. Through structured conversations with movement ecologists and conservation practitioners, we aimed to understand whether the identified gap is also perceived in practice, and if so, what factors hamper collaboration and how these factors can be remediated. We found that both groups are motivated and willing to collaborate. However, because their motivations differ, there is potential for misunderstandings and miscommunications. In addition, external factors such as funder requirements, academic metrics, and journal scopes may limit the applicability of scientific results in a conservation setting. Potential solutions we identified included improved communication and better presentation of results, acknowledging each other's motivations and desired outputs, and adjustment of funder priorities. Addressing gaps between science and implementation can enhance collaboration and support conservation action to address the global biodiversity crisis more effectively.

Abstract

27th Annual Conference of the European Cetacean Society. Setúbal, Portugal, 8-10 April 2013. Different models estimating cetacean population size require making assumptions about the marking and recapturing of individuals, and on the structure of the population. Crucial in selecting the most appropriate model is a critical assessment of these assumptions. In this study we applied the robust parameterization of the open Jolly-Seber (JS) model (POPAN), using the software program MARK. This model was applied to data collected on the Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus). Between 2004 – 2007, photo-identification was used as a Capture-Mark-Recapture technique to identify 670 unique individuals off Pico Island, Azores. For this model, it was assessed what assumptions are supported or violated. The aim of this study was improving our understanding of how to select the most appropriate population size model.

Abstract

Abstract: Foraging behaviour plays a key role in the interaction between herbivores and vegetation, their predominant food source. Understanding this interaction is crucial to providing information that is useful for conservation of herbivores. The objective of this study was to determine how sward height influences functional response and movement patterns of free ranging wild impala and zebra at the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute. The study was conducted for 3 months. Sward height is an important parameter that indicates how intensive a sward has been grazed and it influences intake rate through its effect on bite size. Bite size, instantaneous intake rate, specific mass intake rate and feeding station interval for impala and zebra increased with sward height. Sward height in combination with an animal's sex was found to have a profound effect on specific mass intake rate in impala. Zebra had a longer feeding station interval and lower stepping rate in tall swards compared to impala. Despite differences in their specific body mass and digestive strategies, impala and zebra maximized their intake rates in tall swards as a trade‐off among the swards. Tall swards are therefore critical in the study area and should be protected from bush encroachment which is a persistent problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We investigated the rainfall patterns and associated fluctuations of wild large herbivore species in the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA), southern Africa. The study objectives were to: (i) establish the synchrony in rainfall and drought occurrence patterns in Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe, and four adjacent areas, and (ii) determine the responses of different large herbivore species' populations to droughts. We used annual rainfall data collected from the five sites within the GLTFCA and large herbivore population data collected from multispecies aerial surveys in Gonarezhou and Kruger National Park, South Africa. Our results showed that between 1970 and 2009, Gonarezhou recorded three wet years (1977, 1978 and 2000) and six drought years (1973, 1983, 1989, 1992, 1994 and 2005). However, there were some variations in the drought occurrences between Gonarezhou and the four adjacent areas indicating a weak synchrony in rainfall patterns. Furthermore, seven large herbivore species showed dips in their populations associated with the 1992 severe drought, with most of the species' populations recovering thereafter. Our study suggests that rainfall does have a strong influence on large herbivore population dynamics especially in really dry years in African savanna ecosystems. Our findings underscore the need for further detailed studies on bottom-up processes influencing large herbivore population trends in savanna ecosystems with high rainfall variability. Mobility is indeed a perfect tool to optimise exploitation through tracking changing resources, as shown in Boone et al. (Chapter 9) by the example of transhumance systems in various parts of the world. Fragmentation and private access can limit mobility of herds so that key resources can no longer be used, decreasing the overall productivity of these livestock systems.
