Hoberlandt examined the male holotype of Brachyrhynchus abyssinicus and the male holotype of Mezira lindemannae. He recognized that M. lindemannae represents the same taxon as B. abyssinicus and attached the repective labels to both type specimens (see Figs. 7, 8), but this synonymy has never been published. This can now be confirmed and the new synonymy established: Brachyrhynchus abyssinicus Bergroth, 1895 = Mezira lindemannae Kormilev, 1956, syn. nov. The basic characters of B. abyssinicus, including the size, general habitus, shape of head with triangularly laterally expanded postocular lobes, structure of pronotum and abdomen as well as the shape of the male pygophore (Figs. 13, 14) and paramere (Fig. 17) are shared by specimens recorded outside Ethiopia as indicated above. Distribution. The actual documented distribution of this species is shown in Fig. 20: Ethiopia (Bergroth 1895), Tanzania (Kormilev 1956, as M. lindemannae), Democratic Republic of the Congo (new country record), Guinea (new country record), Kenya (new country record)., Published as part of Heiss, Ernst, 2023, A new species, a new synonymy, a revised generic assignment and new records in some African and Palaearctic Aradidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), pp. 469-478 in Zootaxa 5315 (5) on pages 473-476, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5315.5.3, http://zenodo.org/record/8142356, {"references":["Bergroth, E. ‘ Aradus nuristanicus Hoberlandt n. sp. ’ = Aradus betulae (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Fig. 4) Material examined. ‘ Aradus nuristanicus n. sp. ’: 1♁ (Fig. 4), ‘J. Klapperich / Mangul, 1250 m / Bashgultal, Nuristan / 18. 7. 52, O—Afghan. [p] //cleaned + remounted / by E. HEISS VI[p] I([hw] 201[p]5[hw] // Holotypus [p] ♁ [hw] / Aradus / nuristanicus / n. sp. [hw] / Det. L. Hoberlandt 19[p]58[hw] //A r a d u s / betulae (L.) / det. E.HEISS 2015 [p]’ (NMPC). Comments. Dissection of genitalic structures has shown that they correspond to those of Aradus betulae (Linnaeus, 1758), hence the examined material of ‘ A. nuristanicus ’ is recognized as conspecific with this species. Distribution. Aradus betulae is a widespread species distributed in the Palaearctic Region from Great Britain and Spain in the west to the Far East of Russia and Japan in the north-east and Pakistan in the south-east (Heiss 2001, Aukema et al. 2013). Aradus gracilipes: CHAD: Tschadsee, Ile / (illegible) AEF. / lg. H.Franz [p] // 1970 [hw] (on back side) (Fig. 2) (CEHI). Comment. All the examined specimens lack antennal segments II–IV, their colouration being essential for distinguishing African species of Aradus. A male from the author’s collection (Fig. 2), also from Chad, matches well the intended types of ‘ A. africanus ’, but its complete antennal segments allow its identification as Aradus gracilipes Linnavouri, 1978, described from Equatoria Province in South Sudan. The examined specimens of A. gracilipes corresponds in size, slender habitus, colouration and male genitalic structures to the available specimens of ‘ A. africanus ’, and accordingly the latter are recognized as conspecific with A. gracilipes Linnavuori, 1978. Distribution. ‘ Carventus machadoi Hoberlandt n. sp. ’ (Fig. 5) Material examined. ‘ Carventus machadoi n. sp. ’: 1♀ (Fig. 5), ‘ Dundo, R.Cambuacola [hw] / Angola: [p] 2.VIII.60(M) [hw] / Mus. Do Dundo [p] // Ang. All African species of Carventus Stål, 1865 were transferred to the genus Burgeonia Schouteden, 1919 by Kormilev & Froeschner (1987). The single female specimen cannot be identified due to the lack of comparative material and no available key to species. Hence the purported type material of ‘ Carventus machadoi ’ probably belongs to Burgeonia but its identity remains unknown., Published as part of Heiss, Ernst, 2023, A new species, a new synonymy, a revised generic assignment and new records in some African and Palaearctic Aradidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), pp. 469-478 in Zootaxa 5315 (5) on page 473, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5315.5.3, http://zenodo.org/record/8142356, {"references":["Schouteden, H. On one of the labels attached to a female intended paratype, Hoberlandt stated that this species is near N. socialis Horváth, 1910. There are more than twenty species of Neuroctenus Fieber, 1860 described from continental Africa, and there is no key available. The African species of this genus need a revision before the specimens of ‘ N. arnoldi ’ can be identified, therefore their identity remains unknown., Published as part of Heiss, Ernst, 2023, A new species, a new synonymy, a revised generic assignment and new records in some African and Palaearctic Aradidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), pp. 469-478 in Zootaxa 5315 (5) on page 473, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5315.5.3, http://zenodo.org/record/8142356, {"references":["Horvath, G. Specimen card-mounted, left fore and middle leg missing, detached pygophore mounted on separate piece of card. Paratype: ♀, ‘COLL. MUS. [hw] / Det. L. Hoberlandt19[p]67[hw, red label] // PARATYPE ♀ / Aradus / congoensis sp. nov. / des. E. HEISS 2022 [p, red label] (NMPC). Note. The examined specimens were labelled as types of ‘ Aradus interpositus n. sp. ’ by Hoberlandt, but the description of this purported new species has never been published, thus this name remains unavailable. Here it is confirmed as a new species and described as Aradus congoensis sp. nov. Diagnosis. This species belongs to the ‘ flavicornis -group’ of African Aradus species, including A. angusticornis Kormilev, 1974 (Cameroon), A. apicicornis Kiritshenko, 1955 (syn. A. noctivagus Hoberlandt, 1957) (Madagascar), A. basilewskyi Schouteden, 1952 (Democratic Republic of the Congo), A. katangae Schouteden, 1952 (Democratic Republic of the Congo), A. flavicornis Dalman, 1823 (syn. A. marani Hoberlandt, 1957) (widely distributed), A. gracilipes Linnavuori, 1978 (South Sudan), A. pauliani Hoberlandt, 1957 (Madagascar), and A. zavattarii Mancini, 1939 (Ethiopia). These species are characterized by rather small size (4–6 mm), slender habitus, bicolored antennae and a caudoventral oval opening of male tergite VIII (Dalman 1823, Mancini 1939, Schouteden 1952, Kiritshenko 1955, Hoberlandt 1957, Kormilev 1974, Linnavuori 1978, Heiss 2013). Aradus congoensis sp. nov. resembles and is related to A. gracilipes Linnavuori, 1978, the only species of this group sharing with the new species the whitish antennal segment IV. Aradus congoensis sp. nov. is however distinguished by a more stout habitus, ratio total body length / width of abdomen 2.93 (vs. more slender, ratio 3.17 in A. gracilipes); shorter antennae, ratio length of antennae / width of head 1.77 (vs. ratio 1.88 in A. gracilipes) and relatively shorter antennal segment III, ratio III / II 0.66 (vs. 0.75 in A. gracilipes); and pronotum more stout, ratio width / length 1.83 (vs. wider, ratio 2.04 in A. gracilipes). Further biogeographic considerations of the type localities of A. gracilipes from South Sudan, at the northern fringe of the tropical forests of the Congo Basin and of A. congoensis sp. nov. from Elisabethville (named Lumumbashi since 1966) near the Zambian border in Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the SE edge of Congo Basin, may support the proposed assignment to two distinct species. Description. Male (holotype) (Fig. 3). Macropterous, of reddish-brown colouration. Head wider than long, antenniferous lobes with acute apices; antennae slender, all segments cylindrical, colouration of I–III reddish brown, IV whitish; length of I / II / III / IV = 0.20 / 0.60 / 0.40 / 0.35 mm; eyes globular, postocular lobes without projections converging posteriorly to constricted collar; vertex with an U-shaped depression on posterior half. Pronotum about 1.8 times as wide as long, paranota slightly emarginate, rounded at humeri, then straightly converging anteriorly to anterolateral angles; anterior margin concave, posterior margin slightly convex; disk with four longitudinal carinae and carinate humeri. Scutellum triangular with elevated lateral margins; disk raised at base, apex narrowly angulate. Legs long and slender, femora and tibiae cylindrical. Abdomen. Lateral margins straight, slightly converging posteriorly; hemelytra with complete membrane, corium long, reaching middle of deltg VI; tergite VIII cup-like with bilobate posteriorly produced lobes and an oval caudoventral opening. Tergite IX consisiting of two elongate lobes. Male genitalia (Figs 18–19). Parameres sickle-shaped, apex pointed; parandria lobate, inner face with pilosity (Fig. 18); tergite IX consisting of two spaced elongate oval sclerites (Fig. 19). Female (paratype). Basically as male but larger and of more stout habitus. Measurements (in mm). Holotype (male): Body length 4.55; head width / length 0.77 / 0.87; pronotum width / length 1.37 / 0.75; width of abdomen 1.55. Paratype (female): body length 5.20; head width / length 0.95 / 0.95; antennae I / II / III / IV = 0.20 / 0.60 / 0.40 / 0.35; pronotum width / length 1.60 / 0.75; width of abdomen 1.85. Etymology. The species epithet refers to the Congo River, the main and largest river draining the Congo Basin and name giving for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Adjective. Distribution. So far only recorded from the type locality in Lumumbashi, Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo., Published as part of Heiss, Ernst, 2023, A new species, a new synonymy, a revised generic assignment and new records in some African and Palaearctic Aradidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), pp. 469-478 in Zootaxa 5315 (5) on pages 470-472, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5315.5.3, http://zenodo.org/record/8142356, {"references":["Linnavuori, R. Archemezira nuoxichenae sp. nov. (Figs 1–3) Holotype. Male specimen, SC 2357 embedded in a honeycolored piece of Burmese amber (41 × 20 × 7 mm). Upper surface of thorax and abdomen excavated by scavengers, only their ventral parts are preserved. Ventral side partly obscured by mould, right legs cut at trochanters, left legs nearly preserved but obscured. This specimen is designated as holotype and labelled accordingly, deposited at SYJAE, Fuzhou, China. Additional specimen. A macropterous specimen preserved in Burmese amber, SC 2124 was available for comparison. It is poorly visible and structural details are obscured by mould and detritus; it lacks antennae and apical segments of abdomen; thus, sex cannot be determined. Size, general habitus, recognizable structures of pronotum and head and particularly the characteristic dentate margins of connexival segments of right side support the assumption that this specimen belongs to A. nuoxichenae sp. nov. but is not recognized as paratype. It is deposited at SYJAE, Fuzhou, China. Etymology. It is a pleasure to dedicate this conspicuous Burmese amber insect to the daughter of the second author Grace Nuoxi Chen. Description. (Holotype). Male specimen of unknown alary condition and unusual large size (15.4 mm); coloration of ventral side reddish brown, pygophore darker. Except for the head, description is based on ventrally exposed characters. Head. 1.7 times longer than wide (32.5 / 19); clypeus narrow, subparallel, apex and keel-like inflated dorsal side beset with tubercles; antenniferous lobes elongate and slightly diverging anteriorly, apex dentate; antennae long and slender, 2.84 times as long as width of head (54 / 19), segment I shortest and spindle-shaped, II–IV thinner and longer, length of antennal segments I/II/III/IV = 5 / 23 / 20 / 6; eyes subglobular inserted in head, postocular lobes subparallel, narrower than width of head (15 / 19); vertex depressed between eyes. Sternum. Prosternum bout twice as wide as long (44 / 22), lateral margins subparallel at humeri, then dentate and angularly produced laterally, anterior lobe sinuately converging, its margins serrate; no trace of metathoracic scent gland visible; rostrum arising from an open atrium, rostral groove along head carinate, then forming a shallow groove on pro-, meso-, and metasternum, rostrum reaching posterior margin of mesosternum. Abdomen. Wider than long (42 / 37) and widely rounded, lateral margins of vltg II–VII beset with 5–6 spine-like teeth increasing in size toward postero-lateral angles; sternites II+III fused at middle, III–VII separated by transverse sutures, the ventral laterotergites marked by a sinuate suture; apodemal impressions hardly traceable, pattern seemingly 2:2:1; the position of spiracles cannot be ascertained; surface striate along vltgs, smooth elsewhere; pygophore conical, paratergites VIII triangular, serrate at outer margin, shorter than pygophore. Legs. Femora cylindrical with distinct trochanters, tibiae (as far as visible) thinner and cylindrical., Published as part of HEISS, ERNST & CHEN, HUA-RONG, 2023, Archemezira nuoxichenae gen. et sp. nov. from Burmese amber (Heteroptera, Aradidae), pp. 17-21 in Palaeoentomology 6 (1) on pages 19-20, DOI: 10.11646/palaeoentomology.6.1.5, http://zenodo.org/record/7754912

Genus Archemezira gen. nov. Type species. Archemezira nuoxichenae sp. nov. Etymology. Refers to its age from Greek ‘archaios’ meaning earliest, ancestral and Mezirinae, the closest related flat bug subfamily. Diagnosis. Distinguished from all Aradidae described so far from Burmese amber by a combination of characters that have not been observed together in other genera: large size; structure of head with a crest-like slender long and slender clypeus; antennae more than 2.5 times longer than width of head; no metathoracic scent glands; lateral margins of connexiva II-VII beset with spine-like teeth. Description. Based on preserved outline and body structures of ventral side, as the whole dorsal side of pronotum, abdomen and pygophore are excavated and were obviously eaten by scavengers at a time, the specimen was already attached to resin by its ventral side before being totally covered by resin. The dorsal side of head is preserved. Therefore, the original alary condition might be macropterous or not and cannot be determined or reconstructed. Body size 15.4 mm. Head. Distinctly longer than wide, narrow long clypeus produced anteriorly with a dorsal crest-like elevation; antennae long and slender, segment I shortest, apex of antenniferous lobes dentate; eyes subglobular, laterally protruding; rostrum arising from an open atrium, longer than head. Thorax. About twice as wide as long, lateral margins subparallel at humeri, then angularly produced and sinuately constricted anteriorly to collar. Scutellum not preserved, no trace of hemelytral structures discernible. Abdomen. Widely rounded, lateral margins of vltg IIVII with spine like teeth; sternites separated by transverse sutures; metathoracic scent glands and spiracles not discernible; apodemal impressions (glabrous areas of Usinger & Matsuda, 1959) hardly traceable, supposed pattern 2.2.1; pygophore conically produced posteriorly, wider than long. Legs. Unarmed, femora slender with distinct trochanters, tibiae straight and cylindrical. Remarks. The large size, general habitus and dentate lateral margins of abdomen of the new genus resemble the Oriental Mezirinae genus Acantharadus Banks, 1909 with its type species Acantharadus quaternarius (Bergroth, 1886) redescribed by Usinger & Matsuda, 1959: 282 which is however differing from Archemezira nuoxichenae sp. nov. by a combination of characters as indicated in the diagnosis and in particular by the structure of clypeus, antenniferous lobes and antennae, shape and size of anterolateral angles of pronotum and the less acute dentation of connexival margins. Bergroth’s original illustration of the is reproduced here (Fig. 1B). Archemezira gen. nov. shares some characters with the Archearadinae (e. g., elongate head, lateral expansions of connexiva), but it has no discernible metapleural scent glands while these are well visible in this subfamily and its type species Archearadus burmensis Heiss & Grimaldi, 2001. Therefore, we tentatively place the new fossil in this subfamily. However, it might represent a new subfamily, but such decision should be based on a phylogenetic analysis as a result of careful comparison and examination of characters of extant and fossil Burmese amber taxa. Such a study is presently not feasible., Published as part of HEISS, ERNST & CHEN, HUA-RONG, 2023, Archemezira nuoxichenae gen. et sp. nov. from Burmese amber (Heteroptera, Aradidae), pp. 17-21 in Palaeoentomology 6 (1) on pages 17-18, DOI: 10.11646/palaeoentomology.6.1.5, http://zenodo.org/record/7754912, {"references":["Bergroth, E.
