Heirloom barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties remain interesting to maltsters and brewers for their perceived unique flavor contributions to beer, despite not meeting contemporary agronomic and malting expectations. This study utilized crosses of the heirloom Maris Otter® and two contemporary genotypes to determine if “updated heirlooms” could be produced that would show improved agronomics and contemporary malt quality, while contributing uniquely to malt and beer sensory and chemical profiles. Using a recently established pipeline of malting; brewing; hot steep and beer sensory; and metabolomics to evaluate barley genotype contributions to malt and beer flavor, four experimental lines were compared to a control. The experimental lines were also assessed for their genomic contribution from their respective parents to further elucidate regions of the Maris Otter genome that may contribute to unique beer flavors. Results show improved agronomic outcomes relative to the heirloom parent and were comparable to the control. Malting quality met current recommendations. However, sensory properties attributable to the unique heirloom parent were not found. Further, chemical profiling did not explain the observed nuanced sensory differences, nor did it reveal unique metabolites not described by the sensory panels. Foodways are important in understanding the bio-cultural dynamics of crop diversity. This paper examines the example of tsukemono (Japanese pickles) and their importance for heirloom vegetables. Social histories of heirlooms and tsukemono were difficult to obtain, so various sources from archives, published reports, to interviews were used to stitch together the stories of the tsukemono-heirloom relationships. The paper finds that tsukemono has provided different opportunities for heirlooms. Tsukemono can enhance the taste and flavors of heirlooms. Pickling can make the best of heirloom’s unique tastes even when they are not suited for other uses. Moreover, certain tsukemono has historically been associated with important social customs like gift-giving and seasonal events. The theoretical contribution of this study is to analyze the foodway-heirloom relationships from the vantage point of the political economy of agrofood systems. It is not enough to say a particular foodway is important for heirlooms. The paper reveals the necessity of analyses that situate the heirloom- foodway relationships in the modern agrofood systems. Changes not only in agriculture but also in consumption, retail, and processing are crucial in understanding the heirloom-foodway relationship.

Among components of the consumer's perception of tomato fruit quality, texture is one of the most critical, being formed of a number of attributes that are difficult to evaluate and which change during fruit ripening and storage. The present work relates different textural parameters measured in a collection of traditional tomatoes from Madrid with the appreciation collected from consumer opinions. Texture traits were highly variable in studied tomatoes; they had strong environmental influence and they differed among genotypes. Great intrapopulational variability has been also detected, probably due to the heterogeneity of its fruit tissues and the intrapopulational diversity of studied landraces. Textural behavior of tomatoes affected the level of consumer appreciation. In general, consumers preferred firm fruits with soft skin, due to their low level of springiness and resilience. However, different taster groups have demonstrate how diversity appears to be necessary to satisfy different types of consumers. Among the three groups of consumers which have been identified in this study, the majority (83% of them) preferred local tomato varieties. In addition, heirloom tomatoes presented softer skins than the commercial hybrid reference (values of 0.29 ± 0.19 vs. 0.49 ± 0.12 kg regarding skin rupture force). That circumstance, which is involved in the post-harvest behavior, must be further considered in storage and commercialization.

Purpose This study aims to determine whether consumers are willing to pay a premium for locally produced hard apple cider and examine the factors influencing this premium. This study examines the influence of hard apple cider attributes and consumer characteristics on consumer preferences for local hard apple cider. Design/methodology/approach Data from a 2019 survey of 875 Tennessee consumers regarding their preferences for a local hard apple cider were obtained. Probit estimates were used to calculate the premium consumers were willing to pay for a locally made hard apple cider and factors influencing this premium. A multivariate probit was used to ascertain factors influencing the importance of attributes (e.g. heirloom apples, sweetness/dryness, sparking/still and no preservatives added) on local hard apple cider preference. Findings Consumers would pay a $3.22 premium for local hard apple cider compared with a $6.99 reference product. Local foods preferences, urbanization, weekly purchases of other alcoholic beverages and shopping venues influenced premium amounts. Other important attributes were sweetness/dryness and no preservatives. Influence of consumer demographics suggests targeted marketing of local ciders could be successful. Originality/value Few studies examine consumer preferences for hard apple ciders. This study represents a cross-sectional analysis of the premium consumers would pay for local hard apple ciders and the importance of other hard apple cider attributes.

‘Mexican June’ was a popular white, open-pollinated maize variety grown in the southwestern and southern USA. It was well adapted to both semi-arid and humid, hot environments and it was utilized for forage and grain. Its production waned with the maize hybrid revolution of the 1930s and 1940s—even though it was proven to outperform the new hybrids in hot, dry climates of the Southwest. The rising popularity of locally grown heirloom crops has increased interest in landrace varieties. There is also increasing focus on desert-adapted crop genetic resources as the need for more climate resilient crops is recognized. We tested the yield performance of six accessions of ‘Mexican June’ in comparison with organic certified commercial hybrids in southern New Mexico. We also documented several plant and ear traits to distinguish variation across the accessions. Several accessions yielded at or near commercial hybrid levels, attesting to the adaptation of ‘Mexican June’ to hot, semi-arid environments. This finding demonstrates that ‘Mexican June’ may prove useful in non-GMO production systems, and as a genetic resource for the improvement of abiotic stress tolerance in new, more resilient varieties. Variation in plant, ear, and kernel traits between accessions of ‘Mexican June’ was consistent with the hypothesis that there is not a single variety of ‘Mexican June’, but multiple varieties that form a complex.

Indigenous folk rice cultivars often possess remarkable but unrevealed potential in terms of nutritional attributes and biotic stress tolerance. The unique cooking qualities and blissful aroma of many of these landraces make it an attractive low-cost alternative to high priced Basmati rice. Sub-Himalayan Terai region is bestowed with great agrobiodiversity in traditional heirloom rice cultivars. In the present study, ninety-nine folk rice cultivars from these regions were collected, purified and characterized for morphological and yield traits. Based on traditional importance and presence of aroma, thirty-five genotypes were selected and analyzed for genetic diversity using micro-satellite marker system. The genotypes were found to be genetically distinct and of high nutritive value. The resistant starch content, amylose content, glycemic index and antioxidant potential of these genotypes represented wide variability and ‘Kataribhog’, ‘Sadanunia’, ‘Chakhao’ etc. were identified as promising genotypes in terms of different nutritional attributes. These cultivars were screened further for resistance against blast disease in field trials and cultivars like ‘Sadanunia’, ‘T4M-3-5’, ‘Chakhao Sampark’ were found to be highly resistant to the blast disease whereas ‘Kalonunia’, ‘Gobindabhog’, ‘Konkanijoha’ were found to be highly susceptible. Principal Component analysis divided the genotypes in distinct groups for nutritional potential and blast tolerance. The resistant and susceptible genotypes were screened for the presence of the blast resistant pi genes and association analysis was performed with disease tolerance. Finally, a logistic model based on phenotypic traits for prediction of the blast susceptibility of the genotypes is proposed with more than 80% accuracy.

The study deals with the thoughts and philosophies of the teacher-parents that inspire them to emphasize on the education of their own children. The informants of this study were the twenty (20) primary and secondary teacher-parents in the Division of Bulacan, Philippines who are purposely selected. Each informant has 3-6 children who are at least bachelor's degree holders. This research employs qualitative research design. The study’s main tool is a semi-structured interview questionnaire. After the completion of the interviews, all data were transcribed and then analyzed using content analysis. Based on the results of the study, the following findings were noted: securing a better future of their children serves as the greatest motivation for the teacher-parents in sending their children to school; and teacher-parents assured that their children will finish their studies on time by securing the finances for the education of their children. The researcher recommends that the proposed financial scheme be adopted by the teacher-parents to help them in the prioritization of the education of their children.

The cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is a species of temperate origin, and the extension of this crop into tropical regions is dependent on genetic breeding. Breeders in the UNICENTRO’s Strawberry Breeding Program (USBP) selected, from among 2,000 hybrids, 40 hybrids that were adapted to photoperiod and temperature conditions of tropical regions. In this study, we used inter-simple sequence repeat to characterize 40 three-way hybrids developed by USBP and evaluated the genetic relationship of these hybrids with commercial cultivars, heirloom cultivars, and single hybrids. We used nine inter-simple sequence repeat primers to genotype 14 commercial cultivars, five heirloom cultivars, five single hybrids (SH), 20 three-way hybrids with short-day behavior (SDH), and 20 three-way hybrids with photoperiod-insensitive behavior (PIH). The percentage of polymorphism (100%) and both, the Nei genetic diversity (h = 0.34) and the Shannon index (I = 0.51), showed high variability and diversity, respectively, in the evaluated strawberry genotypes. Commercial cultivars showed the highest diversity indices (h = 0.30, I = 0.46), followed by PIH hybrids (h = 0.27, I = 0.41). In the dendrogram, the genotypes were distributed into three groups (commercial cultivars, heirloom cultivars, and single hybrids; SDH and PIH). This clustering was confirmed by principal coordinate analysis and Bayesian inference analysis. The overall analysis of the data revealed the efficacy of USBP in three-way hybrid development with different genetic characteristics compared with those of available commercially cultivars. These hybrids have substantial potential in becoming new strawberry cultivars.

This research discusses various local wisdoms of the Javanese people in dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic. Plague which means “pagebluk” in Javanese is responded with cultural attitudes such as understanding the wabah (pandemic) in the framework of titen science, jamasan heirloom as a method, and herbal medicine treatment as a method. This research makes use of Social Anthropology theory. The method used is descriptive qualitative. While the research background is Ngawi Regency, East Java. Data were collected from observations and interviews with several sources and literature study. The results of this study show that each region in Indonesia, especially Java, has its own way of responding to the arrival of the COVID-19 outbreak. With existing local wisdom, the Javanese people are trying to deal with this pandemic in their own way and culture.

Six wheat varieties were single crossed at 2017/18. Six parents and its 15 F1 single-crosses were cultivated under N-normal and N-stress at 2018/19, to study heterosis and the genetic parameters for yield and its components under normal and N-stress. Mean squares of wheat-gentypes, parent, F1-crosses and parent versus cross were highly significant or significant for most of traits under both conditions. The highest desirable heterosis and heterobeltiosis were detected by crosses No. 7 and No.8 for earliness; No.14, No.8 and No.3 for 100-Grain weight; crosses No.8 and No.13 for number of spikelets/spike; crosses No.9, No.7 and No.13 for number of grains per spike; cross No.4 for number of spikes/plant; crosses No.3, No.12 and No.10 for grain yield per plant, therefore, it might be decided that these crosses may be beneficial for enhancing wheat grain-yield programs under low or high N conditions. The median grade of dominance was greater than one for all characters under both conditions, suggesting the importance of over dominance gene effects in the genetics of these traits. Heritability in broad sense (hb.s.) had high values for all traits under both conditions. Lower heritability estimates in narrow sense (h2n.s.) were detected for all the studied traits under both conditions, except each of spikes number /plant, weight of 100-grain and protein % at both conditions which had moderate values of narrow sense heritability, reflecting the part of environmental factors and dominance genes in heirloom scheme of these characters.

Coastal area of Bengkulu Province is home of many heirloom rice varieties and play an important role in contributing rice production in the province. However, as the climate change proceeds, a progressive sea water inundation has increased soil salinity mainly in low-lying areas and jeopardizing the sustainability of rice production in coastal regions. The use of salt-tolerant varieties, therefore, would be a sensible solution to alleviate the adverse effect of soil salinity in respect of maintaining the crop production in the coastal areas. The objective of this study was to examine the salinity tolerance of 20 heirloom rice varieties collected from a coastal area of Bengkulu Province. Prior to the screening process, lethal concentration 90 (LC90) was determined by assaying the seedlings of ‘Kuning Tinggi’ in a series of nutrient solution containing a different concentration of NaCl (0, 2000, 4000, 6000, 8000 and 10000 ppm). Using a regression analysis, LC90 was detected at a concentration of 3910 ppm. The screening was performed by exposing the varieties in the nutrient solution culture containing 4000 ppm NaCl and growing them on the tidal swamp. Under nutrient culture evaluation, the symptom of NaCl toxicity was scored and converted to salinity tolerance index. ‘Humbur’, ‘Kuning Tinggi’ and ‘Padang Bakung’ exhibited medium tolerant, while ‘Beram’, ‘Imperata’ and ‘Kuning’ exhibited very sensitive. This study aimed to determine the growth and yield performance of five rice varieties under the different crop establishments and assess rice profitability as influenced by crop establishment under irrigated lowland conditions. The study was laid out in a split-plot arranged in an RCBD with three replications. Crop establishment was designated as the main plot while rice varieties as a subplot. Results revealed that the direct row seeding method significantly showed a significant advantage in agronomic and yield and yield component parameters over the transplanting method among rice varieties tested. Heirloom red rice significantly headed earlier (63.17 days) when planted in both crop establishments and obtained the tallest plant height, greater leaf area index, the heavier weight of 1,000 grains, and grain yield. There was a significant interaction effect on crop establishment and rice variety recorded from sowing to heading and maturity. Cost and return analysis revealed that the direct row seeding method achieved higher gross income (USD 2,012.00) and gross margin (USD 1,086.60) than the transplanting method. Heirloom red rice significantly achieved the highest grain yield (5.85 t ha-1), resulting in a higher gross income and gross margin of USD 2,340.00 and USD 1,352.45, respectively. Direct row seeding is applicable as an effective cost-reducing method of crop establishment for lowland rice production. Besides, it can shorten the time of crop establishment. Heirloom red rice with dual characteristics as an irrigated lowland and upland rice cultivar is feasible for direct row seeding and transplanting methods during the dry season.

This research aims to know and understand the utilization of heritage in indigenous peoples in Besemah tribe, and to know and understand the efforts of indigenous peoples in the tribe of Besemah to preserve their inheritance. In this study the author used an empirical approach by conducting interviews on Jokoh and the head of Adat in the village of Jokoh. As for the material interviewing is about the existence of heirloom in the tribe of Besemah covering anything, then conducted analysis of the legal certainty given to the Adat law community when there is a violation committed of Adat heirloom and how the procedure is done in conducting the management of the estate so that later known the level of awareness of the law of indigenous peoples to its inheritance. The results of the research is the inheritance in indigenous peoples in the tribe of Besemah consisting of the House of Baghi, Tanah, and Keris Serunting Sakti. Then the efforts of indigenous peoples to the people of adat in preserving their inheritance is by doing traditional ceremonies that are attended by community leaders, people's people, and rural residents. Purpose The purpose of this study is to bring out the success of the Godrej Group, focusing on their leadership styles and discussing how authentic and ethical leadership leads to value-based leadership (VBL), which has its eminence in the post-COVID-19 world. Design/methodology/approach The case study has been designed based on secondary published sources and few informal interactions with the leaders associated with the Godrej Group. Findings It was found that VBL is derived from authentic and ethical leadership and Adi Godrej, Chairman of Godrej Group, managed to sail through all these years successfully by adopting the authentic, ethical and VBL style, thereby transforming the family business into a global business and a valuable brand. Originality/value The case study is based on secondary published sources and informal interactions with the Godrejites. The different elements and eminence of authentic, ethical and VBL styles are explored. These values will play a significant role in the post-COVID-19 world. Value-based leader inculcates a clear, honest, empathetic and simple approach to employer–employee communication as the COVID-19 situation evolves. For centuries, heirloom rice varieties have been grown on the terraces of the Cordillera Mountains of Luzon, Philippines, terroirs known for their significant historical, cultural, and aesthetic values. However, heritage heirloom rice farming is gradually being abandoned, mainly because of its lower productivity and the struggle of the sector to create a sustainable niche market for heirloom rice by branding its cultural, social, and nutritional values. We propose several demand-side intervention strategies for the valorization of heirloom rice. To support the development of a segmented marketing strategy for heritage farming, we provide evidence on urban consumers’ willingness to purchase heirloom rice. We interviewed 500 urban consumers from Metro Manila in July–August 2015, who placed a purchasing bid on a kilogram of heirloom rice. Consumers’ bids averaged PHP 72.61 kg−1 (USD 1.60 kg−1), which is less than half its current market price. This explains why heirloom rice struggles to gain market share in urban markets in the Philippines. Given this bid price, we estimate a potential market size of PHP 20.3 billion (USD 443 million) that could be created for heirloom rice and tapped into by heritage farmers. Findings further indicate that women, business owners, and consumers who buy packaged rice and eat pigmented rice are willing to pay more for heirloom rice. Finally, our evidence suggests that proper information framing will be necessary to create demand and support the valorization of heirloom rice to preserve cultural heritage and in situ biodiversity of rice landraces in the Philippines.

Historical archaeologists often view curated or heirloom pottery as a frustrating anomaly in the dating of historical-period sites or contexts. Fewer pause to consider why the artifacts were curated in the first place, or what their presence reveals about the people who maintained them. Drawing on a case study of curated micaceous pottery at a Hispanic diaspora site in east-central New Mexico, this article argues that investigation of heirloom pottery can offer insights into the functional, familial, and cultural significance of these beloved things.

This study seeks to reveal the application of business ethics in the traditional Marsyudi blacksmith business in Paterongan Village. This study uses qualitative methods with a case study approach. The informants in this study were four, namely one main informant as the blacksmith owner and three supporting informants who were employees and customers. This research site is carried out at the Marsyudi traditional blacksmith business site, namely in Tok Koneng Hamlet, Paterongan Village, Galis District, Bangkalan Regency. The results of this study indicate that the application of business ethics to traditional Marsyudi blacksmith business is good. First, Marsyudi's traditional blacksmith business implements a belief value in the implementation of the down payment payment system, the value of giving equal prices in the heirloom selling price and the value of freedom of choice in credit payment transactions made by buyers. Second, the application of ritual ethics before carrying out heirloom production. Rituals in heirloom production that are applied to his efforts are jhejeh rituals, rituals for distributing porridge or sticky rice, reading basmalah and bathing keris heirloom by using flower water. All of these rituals are intended for the craftsman to be safe and produce good quality heirloom products. These findings are in line with the theory of teleology because the purpose of business ethics carried out by the traditional Marsyudi blacksmith business is for the good, not for evil.

This project investigated the characteristics, motivations, knowledge, and experiences of farmers and gardeners who are involved in growing, saving, and sharing open pollinated, heirloom seeds. The goal of the project was to help the Revitalizing Ozark-Ouachita Seed Traditions (ROOST) seed bank better understand the people who participate in the seed exchange events that ROOST participates in, sponsors, or organizes. We used participant-observation, interviewing, and a survey to gather our data. We selected nine seed savers from the ROOST database for in-depth interviews that we conducted in various places including homes, seed swaps, gardens, and greenhouses, and we followed this with a survey of a broader group of ROOST seed savers. This article analyzes data from this research and makes recommendations regarding how ROOST and other similar organizations can be better and more effective supporters and stewards of local agricultural biodiversity conservation networks.

Parkia timoriana, a leguminous tree, is an important multipurpose species growing over the northeastern part of India. The species has been closely associated with the livelihood of the society for its beneficial attributes, and therefore, besides its occurrences in the wild, the species also been commonly raised in the home gardens. However, the ecology of the species i.e., phenology, biomass and carbon sequestration potential has not been studied. Girth class distribution indicated the species exhibit more number of individuals in the midsize girth compare to the smaller and larger girth classes. The species showed maximum leaf flushing at the onset of rainy season (Apr–May), whereas, maximum leaf fall occurred during Nov–Jan. Flowering and fruiting was maximum during dry months. The individuals with 30–45 cm girth size and above showed flowering and fruiting and the individuals below this girth do not exhibit flowering and fruiting tendency. The total biomass of P. timoriana was 2.24 t ha−1 and magnitude of carbon sequestration potential was 0.23 t ha−1 year−1. The study suggests that a threshold level of girth size 30 cm and above would be required for the fruiting and flowering. In addition to its multiple uses, the species has a good potential to sequester carbon.

SummaryCommercial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most widely grown vegetable crops worldwide. Heirloom tomatoes retain extensive genetic diversity and a considerable range of fruit quality and leaf morphological traits.Here the role of leaf morphology was investigated for its impact on fruit quality. Heirloom cultivars were grown in field conditions and BRIX by Yield (BY) and other traits measured over a fourteen-week period. The complex relationships among these morphological and physiological traits were evaluated using PLS-Path Modeling, and a consensus model developed.Photosynthesis contributed strongly to vegetative biomass and sugar content of fruits but had a negative impact on yield. Conversely leaf shape, specifically rounder leaves, had a strong positive impact on both fruit sugar content and yield. Cultivars such as Stupice and Glacier, with very round leaves, had the highest performance in both fruit sugar and yield. Our model accurately predicted BY for two commercial cultivars using leaf shape data as input.This study revealed the importance of leaf shape to fruit quality in tomato, with rounder leaves having significantly improved fruit quality. This correlation was maintained across a range of diverse genetic backgrounds and shows the importance of leaf morphology in tomato crop improvement.

Heirloom 생두를 이용하여 로스팅 조건을 달리한 커피 원두를 제조하고, 에스프레소 커피 및 드립 커피를 추출하여 총 폴리페놀함량, 총 플라보노이드 함량, TEAC, DPPH 라디칼 소거 활성, FRAP 등의 항산화 활성을 조사하였다. 총 폴리페놀 함량은 에스프레소 커피에서는 Moderately dark 단계에서, 드립 커피에서는 Light medium 단계에서 가장 높았으며, Very dark 단계에서는 모두 가장 낮았다. 총 플라보노이드 함량은 에스프레소 커피와 드립 커피 모두 Light medium 단계에서 가장 높았으며, 로스팅이 강해질수록 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 에스프레소 커피와 드립 커피에서 TEAC는 로스팅에 따른 시료 간에 유의적인 차이가 없었다. DPPH 라디칼 소거 활성은 에스프레소 커피와 드립 커피 모두에서 Very dark 단계에서 가장 낮았다. FRAP는 에스프레소 커피와 드립 커피 모두 Light medium 단계에서 가장 높았으며, 로스팅이 강해질수록 감소하여 Very dark 단계에서 가장 낮았다. 드립 커피에서 TEAC와 로스팅에 따른 총 폴리페놀, 총 플라보노이드 함량과의 상관관계는 높았다. FRAP는 에스프레소와 드립 커피에서 모두 로스팅 정도에 따른 총 폴리페놀과 총 플라보노이드 함량과 양의 상관관계가 있었다. 로스팅 강도는 커피의 총 폴리페놀과 총 플라보노이드 함량과 항산화 활성에 영향을 주는 것으로 여겨진다.

Bengkulu Province has many local rice germplasms that have adapted to specific areas. The germplasm has certain character advantages so that it is maintained by farmers. The characteristics of each germplasm need to be identified in order to improve the properties of the existing germplasm. This study aimed to determine the performance, to estimate the value of genetic parameters, and to determine the genetic relationship of local rice genotypes collected from four districts in Bengkulu Province. The results showed that the ‘Kuning Sulaowangi’ genotype was the earliest in maturity had the highest number of tillers amongst genotypes. Genotypes which have significantly the highest average component yields were ‘Kunig Air Dingin’ and ‘Impera’. Traits that have a high heritability estimated value were weight of 100 grains (91.046%) and grain weight per panicle (80.252%). The weight of 100 grains also has the highest genetic variability value. Thus increasing local rice production is possible. Based on the results of the analysis with the similarity coefficient of 55%, the local rice genotypes could be grouped into two groups. Group I consisted of 9 genotypes namely ‘Kuning Pendek’, ‘Humbur’, ‘Cantik’, ‘Pandak Kelabu’, ‘Cisadane Putih’, ‘Kuning Sulaowangi’, ‘China Abang’, ‘China Putih’ and ‘Impera’. Other genotypes were in Group II. Trait improvement can be done through hybridization between individuals of different groups. To develope early in maturity and high-yielding varieties can be done through hybridization of the ‘Kunig Sulaowangi’ and ‘Kunig Air Dingin’

This article aims to explore Waruga cultural site focusing on rituals and sacredness performed by indigenous community in Minahasa. The data was obtained through interview, observation, documentary and literature studies in a qualitative manner. The community made totems as a sacred, symbols of identity and a social cohesion. This attitude was obvious when the Minahasa indigenous community held a ritual to respect their ancestors (dotu) as well as to relate to the Most High (Opo Empung). Through the rituals, the community had ties with one another and confirmed the identity of Tou Minahasa. The Waruga had a significant influence on the Minahasa indigenous community because it had noble values. Everything related to the Waruga , both ancestral spirits, burial grounds and heirloom lands were considered sacred. Therefore, the Waruga was not only an ordinary site, but also a sacred site. This study concludes that the Waruga was a totem and unifying symbol of Minahasa maintaining social solidarity.

Wheat consumption has declined amid growing concerns about gluten-sensitivity. To determine if genetic manipulation of wheat contributes to systemic and localized gut inflammation, we compared the effects of the modern variety Gallagher and a blend of two heirloom varieties, Turkey and Kharkof, on measures of gut inflammation, structural characteristics, and barrier integrity under normal and Western diet (WD) conditions in C57BL/6 mice. Indicators of gut inflammation, including lymphocyte infiltration and cytokine expression, were largely unaffected by WD or wheat, although WD elevated interferon-γ (Ifng) and heirloom varieties modestly reduced interleukin-17 (Il17) in the context of WD. WD negatively affected jejunal villi structure, while the modern variety improved villi structure in the ileum. Relative mRNA and tight junction proteins and serum lipopolysaccharide binding protein were unaltered by WD or wheat. These findings indicate that the modern variety did not compromise barrier function or contribute to gut inflammation compared to its heirloom predecessor.

Malay Reserve Land (MRL) is an heirloom belonging to the Malays to be protected, preserved, and developed in line with the aspirations of sustainable development. However, it has been found that land under the Malay Reserve Land (MRL) category is still lagging in the development stream although it has the potential to be developed in tandem with other Non-Malay Reserve Land. This research paper aims to establish the issues and obstacles in developing the Malay Reserve Land eventually to formulate a strategy for development of the land in future. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were held involving experts from various backgrounds namely academics, government officers, industry players and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Issues and the respective obstacles mainly elicited from the FGDs are in the areas of data, information and research, legislation, development, and financial.

Cultural heritage assets are in danger of extinction or damage due to lack of publicity and financial problems. Technological advances can play a role in their preservation and promotion. This study aims to create a blockchain-based cultural property protection system which we named the Heirloom. The proposed system uses blockchain and IPFS. This system will allow foundations to receive funding to protect cultural assets without using an intermediary. The cultural assets are transformed into unique digital items using the NFT (Non-Fungible Token) technology. The metadata of the created NFTs is stored in the distributed file system IPFS (InterPlanetary File System). An autonomous working system is provided with smart contracts. The supporters give donations to earn their share of protection and maintenance rights. The proof of concept implementation is promising. A case study on protecting old olive trees in Milas has also started with a local foundation. Possible outcomes will be the ease of getting funds for preserving cultural heritage and increasing awareness. Future studies will include working on different methods for decreasing the costs of the system and integrating augmented and virtual reality technologies.

The widely recounted story of the origin of cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) oversimplifies the complex interspecific hybrid ancestry of the highly admixed populations from which heirloom and modern cultivars have emerged. To develop deeper insights into the three-century-long domestication history of strawberry, we reconstructed the genealogy as deeply as possible-pedigree records were assembled for 8,851 individuals, including 2,656 cultivars developed since 1775. The parents of individuals with unverified or missing pedigree records were accurately identified by applying an exclusion analysis to array-genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms. We identified 187 wild octoploid and 1,171 F. × ananassa founders in the genealogy, from the earliest hybrids to modern cultivars. The pedigree networks for cultivated strawberry are exceedingly complex labyrinths of ancestral interconnections formed by diverse hybrid ancestry, directional selection, migration, admixture, bottlenecks, overlapping generations, and recurrent hybridization with common ancestors that have unequally contributed allelic diversity to heirloom and modern cultivars. Fifteen to 333 ancestors were predicted to have transmitted 90% of the alleles found in country-, region-, and continent-specific populations. Using parent-offspring edges in the global pedigree network, we found that selection cycle lengths over the past 200 years of breeding have been extraordinarily long (16.0-16.9 years/generation), but decreased to a present-day range of 6.0-10.0 years/generation. Our analyses uncovered conspicuous differences in the ancestry and structure of North American and European populations, and shed light on forces that have shaped phenotypic diversity in F. × ananassa.

The Solanaceae family includes commercially important vegetable crops characterized by their relative sensitivity to salinity. Evaluation of 24 heirloom cultivars of eggplant (Solanum melongena), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and pepper (Capsicum spp.) from different geographic regions under salinity revealed significant variation in salt tolerance. Relative fruit yield under salt treatment varied from 52 to 114% for eggplant, 56 to 84% for tomato, and 52 to 99% for pepper. Cultivars from all three crops, except Habanero peppers (C. chinense), restricted Na transport from roots to shoots under salinity. The high salt tolerance level showed a strong association with low leaf Na concentration. Additionally, the K-salinity/K-control ratio was critical in determining the salinity tolerance of a genotype. Differences in relative yield under salinity were regulated by several component traits, which was consistent with the gene expression of relevant genes. Gene expression analyses using 12 genes associated with plant salt tolerance showed that, for eggplant and pepper, Na+ exclusion was a vital component trait, while sequestration of Na+ into vacuoles was critical for tomato plants. The high variability for salt tolerance found in heirloom cultivars helped characterize genotypes based on component traits of salt tolerance, enabling breeders to increase the salt tolerance of Solanaceae cultivars.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is considered one of the most valuable and versatile vegetable crops globally and also serves as a significant model species for fruit developmental biology. Despite its significance, a severe genetic bottleneck and intense selection of genotypes with specific qualitative traits have resulted in the prevalence of a restricted number of (geno)types, also causing a lack of diversity across widespread cultivated types. As a result, the re-emergence of landraces as well as traditional and heirloom varieties is largely acknowledged as a countermeasure to restore phenotypic, phytochemical and genetic diversity while enriching the aroma/taste tomato palette. On those grounds, the Cypriot tomato germplasm was assessed and characterized. Ten landrace accessions were evaluated under greenhouse conditions and data were collected for 24 IPGRI discrete phenotypic traits. Grouping of accessions largely reflected the fruit shape and size, four different fruit types were recorded across accessions (flattened, heart-shaped, rounded and highly rounded). Moreover, a single run panel consisting of ten SSRs was developed and applied in order to genetically characterize 190 Cypriot genotypes and foreign heirloom varieties. Based on genetic indexes it was established that tomato landraces have a rather low level of heterogeneity and genetic variation. Finally, mineral and phytochemical analyses were conducted in order to estimate biochemical attributes (total phenolics, ascorbic acid, lycopene, β-carotene, total soluble content, titratable acidity) across genotypes, thus, ascertaining that the Cypriot panel has a high nutritional value. Due to the thermo-drought adaptation and tolerance of these genotypes, the current study serves as a roadmap for future breeding efforts in order to incorporate desirable traits or develop novel tomato lines combining resilience and alimentary value.

Producing ‘Hawaiian Heritage’ cultivars can raise the market value of locally grown sweet potatoes and increase small farmer earnings in Hawaii. Twelve sweet potato breeding lines (Ipomea batatas L.), derived from the Hawaiian maternal parent ‘Mohihi’, together with four check varieties, were trialed under organic management conditions across three environments (site-year combinations) in Oahu, Hawaii (Waimānalo-2018, Waimānalo-2019 and Poamoho-2019). Trials were harvested five months after planting, consistent with local commercial production standards. There were significant differences in fresh harvest yield, post-curing yield, shape, and quality between environments and cultivars. The ‘Hawaiian Heritage’ lines HM 26 and HM 34 outperformed the commercial standard, demonstrating the potential use of traditional Hawaiian germplasm in modern breeding programs. Additionally, ‘Hawaiian Heritage’ lines (e.g., HM 32 and HM 17) with unique traits favored by the local community may be suitable breeding materials for niche markets.

Heirloom tomato varieties are in demand by consumers due to high antioxidant levels. However, these varieties are difficult to produce and are prone to disease. To overcome these problems, heirloom tomatoes may be cultivated in hydroponic systems and grafted onto disease-resistant rootstocks. However, it is unknown if the antioxidant content and capacity are affected by grafting. In this study, heirloom (Black Krim and Green Zebra) and standard (Big Beef) varieties were grafted onto wild type (WT) or productive rootstocks (Arnold and Supernatural). The tomatoes were harvested at maturity, freeze-dried, and ground into a powder. Lycopene was extracted using hexane, and the content was determined spectrophotometrically at 503 nm. The antioxidant capacity of methanol extracts was evaluated by the 2,2′-azino-di[3-ethylbenzthiazoline sulfonsyr]sulphonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays, whereas the phenolic content was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu assay. Interestingly, the grafting of Big Beef and Green Zebra onto Supernatural rootstock resulted in an increased antioxidant capacity, as determined by the DPPH assay. Moreover, the phenolic content was changed for Big Beef grafted onto Arnold, and Big Beef and Green Zebra grafted onto Supernatural. Taken together, these results indicate that certain combinations of standard and heirloom tomato varieties and productive rootstocks may influence the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content. These results may be used to guide producers when choosing rootstocks for cultivating hydroponic tomatoes.

West Sumatra, which in the Minangkabau tradition, land is a high heirloom property that must beprotected and cannot be sold or misused. This study aims to describe the participation of local communities inland acquisition for the construction of the West Sumatra Main Stadium. The theory used in this research issocial capital theory from Robert M.Z Lawang which explains trust, social networks, and norms in buildingcommunity participation. This research uses qualitative methods and descriptive research type. Data collectionwas carried out by observation and interviews. The belief that was found was the existence of tribal ties betweenlandowners, secondly because of shared experience in solving problems, third because of the role of communityleaders, in this case the customary mamak with the title Datuak, fourth because of the certainty of compensationprices that did not harm the community or government, fifth because there is a guarantee of honesty andopenness from related parties including community leaders who will protect the rights of the Sikabu communityand do not allow additional land by parties who are not responsible for their personal interests. Networks cancreate trust between the characters involved. The norms found in the Sikabu community are the custom ofsalingka nagari and the function of the tigo sajarangan stove which can play its role well.

As variedades crioulas estão presentes em diversas Comunidades camponesas no Brasil. Elas são vetoras de conhecimentos tradicionais, diversificam a produção, a renda, a alimentação e as práticas socioculturais, potencializando a socioagrobiodiversidade. Em duas Comunidades localizadas no estado de Goiás identificamos seis famílias guardiãs de variedades e, por meio da observação participante e de entrevistas, constatamos que, no total, são cultivadas 146 variedades de plantas e criadas três espécies de animais crioulos - diversidade considerada elevada. O manejo está associado a práticas agroecológicas e/ou orgânicas e o uso das variedades favorece o modo de vida camponês nas Comunidades. This article reviews the history of plum cultivation and cultivars in Sweden with the aim to describe important heirloom cultivars and to explain how they are conserved in the Swedish National Gene Bank. Commercial plum production in Sweden started around 1890 and was initially in part based on small-fruited local cultivars grown on their own roots. Along with the development of a modern Swedish nursery industry and experimental research the use of grafted trees grew in importance. In the mid-1950s, the yearly plum production in Sweden was estimated to be approximately 2000 tonnes. Since the mid-1980s, production has declined and it is now only about 250 tonnes per year. The work to safeguard heirloom cultivars began with a national inventory in 2005 and since 2012, so-called mandate cultivars have been planted in the Swedish National Gene Bank at Alnarp. Today 45 plum cultivars are preserved with two trees in the gene bank at Alnarp and two trees in local clonal archives.

In 1975, the Missouri homesteaders Kent and Diane Ott Whealy launched True Seed Exchange (later Seed Savers Exchange), a network of ‘serious gardeners’ interested in growing and conserving heirloom and other hard-to-find plant varieties, especially vegetables. In its earliest years, the organization pursued its conservation mission through member-led exchange and cultivation, seeing members’ gardens and seed collections as the best means of ensuring that heirloom varieties remained both extant and available to growers. Beginning in 1981, however, Kent Whealy began to develop a central seed repository. As I discuss in this paper, the development of this central collection was motivated in part by concerns about the precariousness of very large individual collections, the maintenance of which was too demanding to entrust to most growers. Although state-run institutions were better positioned to take on large collections, they were nonetheless unsuitable stewards because they placed limits on access. For seed savers, loss of access to varieties via their accession into a state collection could be as much an ending for treasured collections as total physical loss, as it did not necessarily enable continued cultivation. As I show here, these imagined endings inspired the adoption of a new set of conservation practices that replicated those seen in the formal genetic conservation sector, including seed banking, cold storage and safety duplication.

Tomato is broadly distributed in tropical and subtropical America, where small farmers cultivate commercial and landraces or heirloom genotypes, which exchange genes within them when are planted in the same plot. In this context, three different genetic groups of tomato were evaluated for agromorphological and yield traits under greenhouse to assess the differences in function of the genotypic homogeneity and heterogeneity. Twenty-four non-conventional hybrids (F1, population-x-advanced lines), seventeen landraces and six advanced lines (F8) were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three repetitions. Significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were determined among genetic groups for all variables evaluated, except in days to ripening of fruits at the fifth branch, and within genetic groups, significant differences were also detected. Six hybrids, three landraces and two advanced lines presented remarkable agronomic responses in yield per plant. The hybrids and landraces had high phenotypic variability in plant and fruit traits, with flat-rounded or lightly flattened fruit shapes, qualities demanded in the local markets, and a yield of 2 kg per plant. In Oaxaca, Mexico, small-scale farmers readily accept these heterogeneous genetic groups of tomato. High homogeneity characterized the advanced lines, with a fruit shape convenient for national and international markets. Someday soon a perfectly ripe tomato growing on a vine is going to signal its condition via the 5G network to an AI who knows about heirloom tomatoes at their peak; this AI will place an order for its customers based on standing instructions, after first confirming said customers are indeed expected home that evening. An autonomous vehicle, perhaps a drone, will then be dispatched to rendezvous with a fieldworker who will hand over the ripe treasure while a blockchain payment transaction runs in the background. The Level 5 AV will then whisk what is now a sold and on-its-way tomato back home, making it available for the evening meal.

Watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai] cultivars exhibit diverse phenotypic traits, yet are derived from a narrow genetic base. Heirloom cultivars, and to a lesser extent modern open-pollinated (OP) cultivars, are perceived to contain vital genetic variation that is critical for biodiversity conservation and crop improvement. The objective of this study was to characterize the diversity of six heirloom and open-pollinated watermelon cultivars that are popular among U.S. organic, direct-market, and home gardeners. An additional evaluation was conducted to determine whether significant phenotypic and genotypic variation existed among seed lots sourced from different commercial seed vendors. Important horticultural traits such as days to germination, days to first flower, yield, and fruit quality were measured over two field seasons. Genetic diversity was estimated using 32 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Significant differences in horticultural traits among seed lots in both years were observed only in days to germination and first male flower, which may be a consequence of vendor differences in seed storage and quality control. Heirloom ‘Moon and Stars’ and modern OP ‘Sugar Baby’ were the most genetically distinct from the other cultivars and heirloom ‘Georgia Rattlesnake’ was determined to be highly related to the modern OP ‘Charleston Gray’. The two heirloom cultivars were observed to have lower average gene diversity than the modern cultivars. Heirloom ‘Moon and Stars’ contained significant genetic variation among seed lots, yet heirloom ‘Georgia Rattlesnake’ contained none. These findings suggest that genetic variation can be more accurately attributed to pedigree and foundation seed maintenance practices than to the “heirloom” designation per se. The variation reported in this study can be used to inform conservation and breeding efforts.
