In Finland, nutrient leaching from agricultural fields and eutrophication degrade the quality of inland waters. The lake and catchment characteristics that are driving factors for eutrophication in lakes have not been studied in Finland on the scale of the whole country using a large sample size (1333 lakes). Increased understanding of the relationship between lake and catchment characteristics and lake eutrophication could help evaluating the effectiveness of currently applied protective measures and planning further actions for improving the quality of the inland waters in Finland. This study aimed to describe the relationship between lake eutrophication and the characteristics of the lake and its characteristics by applying random forest regressor, focusing on agricultural characteristics. Chlorophyll-a concentration was used as a target variable and an indicator of eutrophication. The strength of the relationships between eutrophication and individual characteristics was assessed, and the relationships between lake eutrophication and the most important characteristics as well as agricultural characteristics were described. In the scale of the whole country, the model prediction R2 was 0.28 and the prediction RMSE 7.6 μg/l (90% of standard deviation in the target variable), describing the strength of the relationship between the studied characteristics and lake eutrophication. The most important characteristics for predicting lake eutrophication were lake type which included information about lake morphology and the naturally occurring nutrient concentrations, the share of agricultural field area and the share of lake area in the catchment. The highest chlorophyll-a concentrations were predicted in lakes that had a lake type that is sensitive to eutrophication. Increased share of agricultural field in the upstream catchment area was linked to intensified eutrophication while increased share of lake area was linked to reduced eutrophication. Ymmärryksen lisääminen järven ja valuma-alueen ominaispiireiden ja järvien rehevöitymisen välisestä yhteydestä voisi auttaa tällä hetkellä käytössä olevien rehevöitymiseltä suojaavien toimenpiteiden tehokkuuden arviointia, sekä tulevaisuudessa tarvittavien lisätoimenpiteiden suunnittelua. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli kuvailla yhteyttä järvien rehevöitymisen sekä järven ja valuma-alueen ominaispiirteiden välillä hyödyntäen random forest -regressiomallia, ja keskittyen maatalouteen liittyviin ominaispiirteisiin. Veden a-klorofyllipitoisuutta käytettiin mallin selitettävänä muuttujana ja rehevöitymisen indikaattorina. Yksittäisten ominaispiirteiden ja rehevöitymisen välisen yhteyden voimakkuus mitattiin, ja tärkeimpien selittävien ominaispiirteiden sekä maatalouteen liittyvien ominaispiirteiden ja järvien rehevöitymisen välistä yhteyttä kuvailtiin. Tutkittujen ominaispiirteiden ja järvien rehevöitymisen yhteyttä kuvaavan mallin ennustusten R2 oli koko maan tasolla 0.28 ja RMSE 7.6 μg/l (90 % selitettävän muuttujan keskihajonnasta). Tärkeimmät rehevöitymistä ennustavat ominaispiirteet olivat järvityyppi, joka sisältää tietoa järven morfologiasta ja siinä luontaisesti esiintyvästä ravinnepitoisuudesta, sekä valuma-alueen pelto- ja järvipinta-alan osuus. Korkeimmat a-klorofyllipitoisuudet ennustettiin järvissä, jotka ovat tyypiltään luontaisesti alttiita rehevöitymiselle. Kasvava peltoalan osuus järven valuma-alueella oli yhteydessä voimistuneeseen rehevöitymiseen, kun taas laskeva järvialan osuus oli yhteydessä vähentyneeseen rehevöitymiseen. Tutkimuksessa rakennettua mallia tulisi kuitenkin edelleen kehittää, jotta sillä voitaisiin ennustaa järvien rehevöitymistä järven ja valuma-alueen ominaispiirteiden perusteella.

Food production on our planet is dominantly based on agricultural practices developed during stable Holocene climatic conditions. Although it is widely accepted that climate change perturbs these conditions, no systematic understanding exists on where and how the major risks for entering unprecedented conditions may occur. Here, we address this gap by introducing the concept of safe climatic space (SCS), which incorporates the decisive climatic factors of agricultural production: precipitation, temperature, and aridity. We show that a rapid and unhalted growth of greenhouse gas emissions (SSP5–8.5) could force 31% of the global food crop and 34% of livestock production beyond the SCS by 2081–2100. The most vulnerable areas are South and Southeast Asia and Africa's Sudano-Sahelian Zone, which have low resilience to cope with these changes. Our results underpin the importance of committing to a low-emissions scenario (SSP1–2.6), whereupon the extent of food production facing unprecedented conditions would be a fraction.

Rice is the staple food for the Vietnamese people. It is not only vital to ensure adequate food supply, but also an important commercial commodity for the economy of Vietnam. However, rice production can be vulnerable to changes in external socio-economic factors, such as the national political situation. This was the main motivation to conduct this study about the historical evolution of the Vietnamese food system, focusing especially on rice. By studying rice production, supply and trade data during three different political periods, i) the Vietnam War era (1961-1975), ii) the Subsidy period (1975-1986), and iii) the Developing period (1986-2013), interactions between the Vietnamese food system and the political situation could be observed. The results showed stagnation in Vietnamese rice production during the Vietnam War era, as the Average annual growth rate (AAGR) of rice production stood at 1.2% year-1, while the average annual quantity of imported rice was about 0.7 million tons year-1. The Subsidy period (1975-1986) was known as “one of the darkest periods in the development of Vietnam”. The centralized and socialist economy limited the development opportunities of the Vietnamese rice industry, especially during the beginning of the period. Thus, even the AAGR increased to 4.4% year-1 due to the significant improvement in the half end of the Subsidy period, the average food supply in Vietnam remained at the same value as during the Vietnam War era (1 945 and 1 942 kcal cap-1 day-1, respectively). The struggle of the Vietnamese economy pushed Vietnam into a change in the political system called the Renovation, Doi Moi in Vietnamese, in 1986. The positive change in the Vietnamese political situation motivated the rise of many sectors, including the rice production industry. During the developing period, rice production increased sharply (AAGR was 5.7% year-1), and Vietnam became one of the top rice exporters globally.

The current El Niño phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) peaked strongly during the boreal winter of 2015-2016. Previous El Niño events have caused strong climatological anomalies, which have had significant effects on crop yields in many parts of the globe. In addition to the ENSO, also the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are known to strongly affect climatological processes worldwide. Because the occurrence of the oscillations can be predicted even a year in advance, detailed information about their impacts on agricultural yields is highly valuable to ensure adequate food supplies. In this study the relationship of the ENSO, the IOD and the NAO with food production was assessed globally for the first time. The food production data was obtained from the LPJmL model over the period 1950-2006 keeping other than climate parameters constant. The study was conducted by i) comparing the simulated food production quantity during strongly oscillating years and all years, ii) identifying the sensitivity of food production to variations in the oscillation indices, iii) examining whether food production quantity is influenced by several oscillations simultaneously and iv) investigating whether the relationship between food production and the oscillations have changed over time. The research revealed that over four billion people live in areas where at least one of the oscillations cause significant anomalies in food production quantity. Furthermore, it confirmed already existing understanding for example regarding the sensitivity of Australia’s food production to the IOD as well as many other connections between food production with the ENSO (e.g. in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America) and the NAO (e.g. in eastern China and northern Europe) in many areas across the world., El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) koki voimakkaan huipun pohjoisen pallonpuoliskon talvella 2015-2016. Aikaisemmat El Niño tapahtumat ovat aiheuttaneet voimakkaita anomalioita ilmastossa eri puolilla maapalloa, millä on ollut vaikutusta myös ruoantuotantoon. ENSO:n lisäksi, myös Indian Ocean Dipole:n (IOD) sekä North Atlantic Oscillation:n (NAO) tiedetään vaikuttavan voimakkaasti moniin ilmakehän prosesseihin. Koska edellä mainittujen ilmasto oskillaatioiden esiintyminen voidaan ennustaa jopa vuosi etukäteen, tarkka tietämys niiden vaikutuksista ruoantuotantoon on erittäin hyödyllistä, jotta mahdollisiin varotoimenpiteisiin voidaan ryhtyä. Tässä tutkimuksessa on tarkasteltu ensimmäistä kertaa, miten ENSO, IOD ja NAO vaikuttavat ruoantuotantoon globaalisti. Ruoantuotantodata on hankittu LPJmL-mallin avulla ajanjaksolle 1950-2006, säilyttäen muut kuin ilmastolliset parametrit simuloinnissa vakiona. Tutkimus toteutettiin tarkastelemalla, i) miten ruoantuotanto keskimäärin muuttuu eri oskillaatioiden eri vaiheissa, ii) miten herkkä ruoantuotanto on oskillaatioiden vaihteluille, iii) onko oskillaatioilla yhteisvaikutuksia ruoantuotantoon sekä iv) onko oskillaatioiden ja ruoantuotannon suhteissa tapahtunut tarkastelujakson aikana muutoksia. Tutkimus paljasti, että yli neljä miljardia ihmistä asuu alueilla, joissa vähintään yksi oskillaatioista aiheuttaa merkittäviä anomalioita ruoantuotantoon. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa varmistui monia jo aikaisemmin tunnettuja paikallisia yhteyksiä oskillaatioiden ja ruoantuotannon välillä: esimerkiksi IOD:n voimakas vaikutus Australiassa sekä ENSO:n (esimerkiksi Intiassa, Kaakkois-Aasiassa ja Etelä-Amerikassa) ja NAO:n (esimerkiksi itäisessä Kiinassa ja Pohjois-Euroopassa) laajat vaikutukset monilla alueilla.
