Additionally, we generated four functional trait vectors and one phylogenetic vector, describing trait similarity and phylogenetic relatedness, respectively. Linear models, hierarchical partitioning analyses and boosted regression trees were used in combination to explore the relative role of niche position, niche breadth, trait vectors and phylogenetic relatedness in determining fish occupancy, abundance and their relationship.Occupancy and mean abundance of fish species in Poyang Lake showed a significantly positive and rather strong interspecific relationship. Interspecific variations in fish occupancy and abundance were well accounted for by niche position, followed by niche breadth. Nonetheless, trait vectors and phylogenetic relatedness were of minor importance in affecting fish occupancy and abundance. Additionally, occupancy was better explained than abundance by the predictor variables used, which was shown by both linear models and boosted regression trees.This study suggests that the positive correlation between occupancy and abundance also occurs in lake fish species. Furthermore, ecological niche features, especially niche position, were more important than functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness in accounting for occupancy and abundance of fish species in Poyang Lake. Disentangling the factors governing community structure across various spatial and temporal scales is a core task in community ecology and biogeography, because it could provide valuable insights into biodiversity conservation and management. The relative role of environmental (a proxy for niche‐based mechanism) and spatial (a proxy for dispersal) effects in shaping ecological communities depends on diversity facets, network positions, seasonality and biological characteristics of the focal organisms. However, such patterns are not well understood for fish communities in large river systems, especially if all of these patterns are examined simultaneously.We investigated fish taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic total β‐diversity (and their turnover and nestedness phenomena) at different spatial scales (basin vs. section scales) and seasons (wet vs. dry seasons) in a subtropical river system (the Chishui River basin, China). We also quantified the relative importance of environmental variables and spatial factors in shaping fish β‐diversity by using generalised dissimilarity modelling.At the basin scale, fish taxonomic and phylogenetic β‐diversity across seasons mainly reflected turnover, yet turnover and nestedness contributed likewise to total functional β‐diversity. Taxonomic and phylogenetic β‐diversity were strongly correlated (r from 0.39 to 0.87), whereas functional and both taxonomic and phylogenetic facets were relatively weakly correlated (r from 0.27 to 0.65). Generalised dissimilarity modelling suggested that phylogenetic β‐diversity phenomena were consistently more influenced by environmental variables (wet 16.1%, dry 22.4%) than by spatial factors (wet 6.7%, dry 4.8%). However, for both taxonomic and functional facets, environmental variables (turnover 13.8%, nestedness 6.4%) and spatial factors (turnover 4.3%, nestedness 9.4%) accounted for a greater proportion of variations in turnover and nestedness, respectively.At the section scale, only phylogenetic total β‐diversity and nestedness, as well as taxonomic nestedness significantly differed between the headwater and downstream sections. Furthermore, headwater communities were primarily explained by spatial (15.7%) and environmental (12.7%) variables in the wet season, while environmental factors (25.9%; spatial 7.7%) dominated in the dry season. By contrast, downstream communities were more influenced by environmental factors (17.9%; spatial 8.3%) in the wet season, whereas environmental (11.0%) and spatial variables (11.5%) contributed likewise to β‐diversity in the dry season.Our results highlight that, compared with taxonomic β‐diversity, accounting for turnover and nestedness of functional and phylogenetic β‐diversity helps to reveal distinct biodiversity patterns, and potential environmental and spatial controls. Given that community–environment relationships and the relative contribution of environmental and spatial factors varied between seasons and between the basin and section scales, our study underlines the importance of long‐term dynamics and spatial scales in metacommunity studies. Our findings also suggest that maintaining environmental heterogeneity and adequate hydrological connectivity would be essential for the conservation of fish diversity. Overall, our study advances current knowledge of fish biodiversity patterns and their maintenance mechanisms by adding insights from multi‐faceted diversity and seasonality, which has rarely been done in large subtropical rivers. Aim: Disentangling how stochastic and deterministic processes contribute to variation in beta diversity is a common goal for ecologists and biogeographers. However, such studies are scarce in alpine streams, especially when different diversity facets are considered. Here, we combined different approaches to examine the drivers of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional beta diversities, and discussed how our results can inform community assembly and biodiversity conservation in Tibetan streams. Location: Tibet plateau. Taxon: Macroinvertebrates. Methods: We first partitioned multiple facets of beta diversity (Btotal) into species replacement (Brepl) and richness difference (Brich) as well as local (LCBD) or species (SCBD) contributions. Then, we applied ordination methods to examine the relative importance of local, climatic and spatial factors on Btotal, Brepl and Brich, respectively. We explored community assembly rules using null models based on trait and phylogeny structure. Results: Btotal displayed high values and was primarily driven by Brepl. Local, climatic and spatial factors were poor predictors of the different facets of beta diversity. Null models showed that the diversity metrics did not differ from those of null expectations, suggesting that most individual streams might be occupied by species that were merely random draws from the functional or phylogenetic pools available in this region. Partitioning beta diversity into LCBD and SCBD implied that the upper canyon streams were more unique than those at lower elevations and can be valuable for biodiversity conservation. Main Conclusions: Analysing multiple facets of beta diversity provide important insights into community assembly that cannot be acquired by focusing on taxonomic diversity only. Using a multi‐faceted approach involving species, phylogenetic and trait data, our study not only sheds light on the assembly mechanisms of macroinvertebrate communities in alpine streams, but also bring inspirations for biodiversity conservation in the 'World's Third Pole' that is highly sensitive to global change. Aim: The interspecific relationships between species occupancy and abundance have been broadly studied in terrestrial systems; however, the causes underlying this relationship in freshwater fishes remain poorly addressed. The main aims of this study were (a) to examine the occupancy–abundance relationship in 62 fish species in a monsoon climate river; (b) to determine the relative importance of species niche, functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness in shaping the occupancy–abundance relationship. Location: The Chishui River, the Yunnan‐Guizhou Plateau and the Szechwan Basin, China. Taxon: Freshwater fishes. Methods: A linear model was used to test the relationship between distribution and mean abundance across fish species. The outlying mean index analysis was performed to estimate niche breadth and niche position parameters for each fish species. In addition, using principal coordinates analysis, we created four trait vectors describing the similarity of species' traits. Fish phylogeny was obtained from a global molecular phylogenetic tree of actinopterygian fishes. We used a combination of linear models, commonality analyses and boosted regression trees to evaluate the relative effects of the niche metrics, traits and phylogenetic relatedness on occupancy and abundance. Results: Fish occupancy was strongly (R2 = 0.749) and positively correlated with mean abundance in the Chishui River. Niche parameters, especially niche position, were the main determinants of variation in occupancy (e.g. total contribution of niche position and breadth using commonality analyses: 0.587 and 0.318) and abundance (0.323 and 0.151) across species. Furthermore, traits and phylogeny had little to no effect on fish occupancy (0.034 and 0.037) and abundance (0.021 and 0.003). Main conclusions: Freshwater fishes in the Chishui River fit the common macroecological pattern of positive relationship between occupancy and abundance. Few studies have considered the effects of environmental variables at different spatial scales on Neotropical stream biodiversity. Furthermore, scale-related studies mostly include only one facet of biodiversity. To determine the contribution of local and landscape variables to the variation in the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic α-diversity of stream fish assemblages, we sampled 85 streams in the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil. Local variables explained a substantial fraction of the variance in almost all biodiversity facets. Landscape variables (i.e., land-use and spatial variables) contributed little to the variation in the α-component of biodiversity. Our results thus highlight the importance of local features for maintaining stream fish biodiversity in agroecosystems. Probably, land-use were not significant because the study area was in a relatively homogeneous landscape severely impacted by anthropogenic activities. It is possible that insignificant effects of spatial structuring occurred because the ichthyofauna has already gone through a homogenization process and/or due to the spatial scale of our study. We suggest that even though local-scale restoration actions would influence biodiversity, we should not neglect landscape restoration because substantial improvements in the ecological integrity of streams are more likely to be accomplished with large-scale actions (e.g., re-establishment of the native riparian forest). Aim: We propose a novel approach that considers taxonomic uniqueness, functional uniqueness and environmental uniqueness and show how it can be used in guiding conservation planning. We illustrate the approach using data for lake biota and environment. Location: Lake Puruvesi, Finland. Methods: We sampled macrophytes and macroinvertebrates from the same 18 littoral sites. By adapting the original "ecological uniqueness" approach, we used distance‐based methods to calculate measures of taxonomic (LCBD–t), functional (LCBD–f) and environmental (LCEH) uniqueness for each site. We also considered the numbers and locations of the sites needed to protect up to 70% of total variation in taxonomic, functional or environmental features in the studied part of the lake. Results: Relationships between taxonomic (LCBD–t), functional (LCBD–f) and environmental (LCEH) uniqueness were generally weak, and only the relationship between macrophyte LCBD–t and LCBD–f was statistically significant. Overall, however, if the whole biotic dataset was considered, macroinvertebrate LCBD–f values showed a consistent positive relationship with macrophyte LCBD–f. Depending on the measure of site uniqueness, between one‐third to one half of the sites could help protect up to 70% of the ecological uniqueness of the studied part of Lake Puruvesi. Main conclusions: Although the dataset examined originated from a large lake system, the approach we proposed here can be applied in different ecosystems and at various spatial scales. An important consideration is that a set of sites has been sampled using the same methods, resulting in species and environmental matrices that can be analysed using the methodological approach proposed here. This framework can be easily applied to grid‐based data, sets of islands or sets of forest fragments. We suggest that the approach based on taxonomic, functional and environmental uniqueness will be a useful tool in guiding nature conservation and ecosystem management, especially if associated with meta‐system ideas or network thinking. We examined the functional strategies and the trait space of 596 European taxa of freshwater macroinvertebrates characterized by 63 fuzzy coded traits belonging to 11 trait groups. Principal component analysis was used to reduce trait dimensionality, to explain ecological strategies, and to quantify the trait space occupied by taxa. Null models were used to compare observed occupancy with theoretical models, and randomization-based analyses were performed to test whether taxonomic relatedness, a proxy of phylogenetic signal, constrains the functional trait space of freshwater macroinvertebrates. We identified four major strategies along which functional traits of the taxa examined show trade-offs. In agreement with expectations and in contrast to existing evidence we found that life cycles and aquatic strategies are important in shaping functional structure of freshwater macroinvertebrates. Our results showed that the taxonomic groups examined fill remarkably different niches in the functional trait space. We found that the functional trait space of freshwater macroinvertebrates is reduced compared to the range of possibilities that would exist if traits varied independently. The observed decrease was between 23.44 and 44.61% depending on the formulation of the null expectations. Arctic freshwaters support biota adapted to the harsh conditions at these latitudes, but the climate is changing rapidly and so are the underlying environmental filters. Currently, we have limited understanding of broad‐scale patterns of Arctic riverine biodiversity and the correlates of α‐ and β‐diversity.Using information from a database set up within the scope of the Arctic Council's Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Plan, we analysed patterns and correlates of α‐ and β‐diversity in benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate communities across northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland. We analysed variation in total β‐diversity and its replacement and richness difference components in relation to location of the river reach and its drainage basin (Baltic Sea in the south, the Barents Sea in the east and the north, and the Norwegian Sea in the west), in addition to climate and environmental variables.In both macroinvertebrates and diatoms, the replacement and richness difference components showed wide variation. For macroinvertebrates, the richness difference component was the more important, whereas for diatoms, the replacement component was the more important in contributing to variation in β‐diversity. There was no significant difference in β‐diversity between the three main drainage basins, but species composition differed among the drainage basins.Based on the richness difference component of β‐diversity, climate variables were most strongly associated with community variation in macroinvertebrates. In diatoms, both environmental and climate variables were strongly correlated with community compositional variation. In both groups, there were also significant differences in α‐diversity among the three main drainage basins, and several taxa were significant indicators of one of these drainage basins. Alpha diversity was greater in areas with a continental climate, while the oceanic areas in the west harboured greatly reduced flora and fauna.The correlates of biodiversity were relatively similar in macroinvertebrates and diatoms. Climate variables, in particular temperature, were the most strongly associated with biodiversity patterns in the Arctic rivers of Fennoscandia. Sedimentary geology may be associated with increased productivity and, to a lesser extent, with sensitivity to acidification. There was considerable variation in community composition across Arctic Fennoscandia, indicating the necessity of protecting several stream reaches or even whole catchments within each region to conserve total riverine biodiversity. Documenting the patterns and potential associated processes of ancient biotas has always been a central challenge in palaeontology. Over recent decades, intense debate has focused on the organization of dinosaur‐dominated communities, yet no general consensus has been reached on how these communities were organized in a spatial context. Here, we used analytical routines typically applied in metacommunity ecology to provide novel insights into dinosaurian distributions across the latest Cretaceous of North America. To do this, we combined fossil occurrences with functional, phylogenetic and palaeoenvironmental modelling, and adopted the perspective that more reasonable conclusions on palaeoecological reconstructions can be gained from studies that consider the organization of biotas along ecological gradients at multiple spatial scales. Our results showed that dinosaurs were restricted in range to different parts of the Hell Creek Formation, prompting the recognition of discrete and compartmentalized faunal areas during the Maastrichtian at fine‐grained scales, whereas taxa with the broadest ranges included those with narrower distributions when combining data from various geological formations across the Western Interior of North America. Although groups of dinosaurs had coincident range boundaries, their communities responded to multiple ecologically‐important gradients when compensating for differences in sampling effort. Metacommunity structures of both ornithischians and theropods were correlated with climatic barriers and potential trophic relationships between herbivores and carnivores, thereby suggesting that dinosaurian faunas were shaped by physiological constraints, limited food resources abundance, and a combination of bottom‐up and top‐down forces across multiple spatial grains and extents. Identifying the hierarchical spatial levels that show the greatest dissimilarities between communities and how these patterns are generated is essential to provide insights into the monitoring and protection of biodiversity. In this study, we additively partitioned diversity of macroinvertebrates into alpha, beta, and gamma diversity across multiple scales in typical and semi-arid tropical estuaries. We also determined which components of the total beta diversity, in terms of species replacement or richness difference (presence-absence data) and abundance difference (relative abundance data), had the greatest relative importance in structuring the composition of benthic macrofauna. In typical and semi-arid tropical estuaries, a non-random spatial pattern was observed in additive partitioning of diversity, with higher values of beta diversity obtained at the largest scales analyzed. When considering the presence-absence data, in general there was no clear trend which components of beta diversity had greater relative importance in typical estuaries. In the semi-arid tropical estuaries, the richness difference component showed greater relative importance in the rainy season, whereas the species replacement presented greater proportions in the dry season. When considering abundance data, in general the abundance difference component showed greater relative importance in typical and semi-arid tropical estuaries in the two seasonal periods. Therefore, approaches based on the presence/absence and on the relative abundance of species provided complementary answers about the distribution patterns of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. We demonstrated that environmental filtering and dispersal limitation may affect the patterns of distribution of benthic macrofauna in estuaries located in regions with different climatic conditions. The Anthropocene presents formidable threats to freshwater ecosystems. Lakes are especially vulnerable and important at the same time. They cover only a small area worldwide but harbour high levels of biodiversity and contribute disproportionately to ecosystem services. Lakes differ with respect to their general type (e.g. land‐locked, drainage, floodplain and large lakes) and position in the landscape (e.g. highland versus lowland lakes), which contribute to the dynamics of these systems. Lakes should be generally viewed as 'meta‐systems', whereby biodiversity is strongly affected by species dispersal, and ecosystem dynamics are contributed by the flow of matter and substances among locations in a broader waterscape context. Lake connectivity in the waterscape and position in the landscape determine the degree to which a lake is prone to invasion by non‐native species and accumulation of harmful substances. Highly connected lakes low in the landscape accumulate nutrients and pollutants originating from ecosystems higher in the landscape. The monitoring and restoration of lake biodiversity and ecosystem services should consider the fact that a high degree of dynamism is present at local, regional and global scales. However, local and regional monitoring may be plagued by the unpredictability of ecological phenomena, hindering adaptive management of lakes. Although monitoring data are increasingly becoming available to study responses of lakes to global change, we still lack suitable integration of models for entire waterscapes. Research across disciplinary boundaries is needed to address the challenges that lakes face in the Anthropocene because they may play an increasingly important role in harbouring unique aquatic biota as well as providing ecosystem goods and services in the future. Environmental filtering and spatial processes have been associated with variation in ecological communities and biodiversity; however, their relative importance on multiple dimensions of beta diversity has not been fully explored in montane streams. Here, we examined the relative contribution of local, catchment and climate environmental variables and spatial factors to variation in three dimensions of macroinvertebrate beta diversity in the upper Han River Basin. Taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic beta diversities and their respective turnover and nestedness components were calculated for macroinvertebrate assemblages sampled in a total of 130 stream sites across a large mountainous landscape. We investigated the correlations between beta diversity facets using MSR‐Mantel procedure and then examined the relative influence of each set of ecological factors through redundancy analysis and variance partitioning. Our results revealed relatively low spatial congruence among beta diversity dimensions, indicating these diversity dimensions are independent measures which offer complementary information of community assembly. Beta diversity dimensions and components were best explained by spatial and local environmental factors, whereas the large‐scale catchment and climate factors appeared less influential. Moreover, spatial and environmental factors generally exerted different controls on beta diversity depending on the dimensions under consideration. Taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversities were more strongly determined by spatial factors via dispersal limitation, while functional beta diversity was mainly associated to local environments through habitat filtering. Our results challenge the perspective that using one diversity facet as a surrogate for others is enough, and highlight the need to integrate multiple diversity dimensions in metacommunity and biodiversity research. Documenting the patterns of biological diversity on Earth has always been a central challenge in macroecology and biogeography. However, we are only beginning to generate an understanding of the global patterns and determinants of macrophyte diversity. Here, we studied large‐scale variation and community‐environment relationships of lake macrophytes along climatic and geographical gradients using regional data from six continents. We applied statistical routines typically used in the context of metacommunity studies to provide novel insights into macrophyte community compositional patterns within regions worldwide. We found that lake macrophyte metacommunities followed clumped species replacement structures, suggesting that two or more species groups were responding similarly to the environment within regions. Underlying such general convergence, our results also provided evidence that community‐environment relationships were largely context‐dependent, stressing that no single mechanism is enough to account for the complex nature of compositional variation. Surprisingly, we found no general relationships between functional or phylogenetic composition and main metacommunity types, suggesting that linking multi‐trait and evolutionary information to the elements of metacommunity structure is not straightforward. Our findings highlight that global conservation initiatives and biodiversity protection need to capture environmental variation at the metacommunity level, and acknowledge the highly context‐dependent patterns in the community‐environment relationships of lake macrophytes. Biotic interactions are fundamental drivers governing biodiversity locally, yet their effects on geographical variation in community composition (i.e. incidence‐based) and community structure (i.e. abundance‐based) at regional scales remain controversial. Ecologists have only recently started to integrate different types of biotic interactions into community assembly in a spatial context, a theme that merits further empirical quantification. Here, we applied partial correlation networks to infer the strength of spatial dependencies between pairs of organismal groups and mapped the imprints of biotic interactions on the assembly of pond metacommunities. To do this, we used a comprehensive empirical dataset from Mediterranean landscapes and adopted the perspective that community assembly is best represented as a network of interacting organismal groups. Our results revealed that the co‐variation among the beta diversities of multiple organismal groups is primarily driven by biotic interactions and, to a lesser extent, by the abiotic environment. These results suggest that ignoring biotic interactions may undermine our understanding of assembly mechanisms in spatially extensive areas and decrease the accuracy and performance of predictive models. We further found strong spatial dependencies in our analyses which can be interpreted as functional relationships among several pairs of organismal groups (e.g. macrophytes–macroinvertebrates, fish–zooplankton). Perhaps more importantly, our results support the notion that biotic interactions make crucial contributions to the species sorting paradigm of metacommunity theory and raise the question of whether these biologically‐driven signals have been equally underappreciated in other aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Although more research is still required to empirically capture the importance of biotic interactions across ecosystems and at different spatial resolutions and extents, our findings may allow decision makers to better foresee the main consequences of human‐driven impacts on inland waters, particularly those associated with the addition or removal of key species. Deconstructing beta diversity patterns into site or species contributions is a modern approach to understand the factors affecting variation in biodiversity. In this context, estimating the Local Contribution to Beta Diversity (LCBD) and the individual Species Contribution to Beta diversity (SCBD) have been shown to be a good approach to improve knowledge of the drivers of beta diversity. We examined the beta diversity of macrophytes surveyed at 49 floodplain lakes in the Pantanal Wetlands in Brazil during the dry season. We found that, unexpectedly, total species richness was not correlated to LCBD values, but the number of rare species per site was possibly related to LCBD values. Three variables from Moran's Eigenvector Maps (MEM), water transparency and organic matter were the main variables related to LCBD values. The species with highest contributions to beta diversity were those that occurred at approximately half of the surveyed sites. The same patterns were observed when analysing macrophyte data divided by life forms. Of the life forms, floating macrophytes contributed most to beta diversity. The understanding of which factors drive variation in LCBD and which kind of species most contribute to SCBD are fundamental to performing efficient conservation and restoration programs to maintain the structural, functional and ecological diversity of the macrophyte communities in dynamic floodplain ecosystems. Arctic regions support a wide variety of freshwater ecosystems. These naturally oligotrophic and cold‐water streams, rivers, ponds and lakes are currently being impacted by a diverse range of anthropogenic pressures, such as accelerated climate change, permafrost thaw, land‐use change, eutrophication, brownification and the replacement of northern biota with the range expansion of more southern species.Multiple stressors are rapidly changing Arctic freshwater systems as aquatic habitats are becoming more suitable for species originating from more southerly regions and thereby threatening biota adapted to cold waters. The livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples of the north will be altered when ecosystem services associated with changes in biodiversity are affected. Unfortunately, monitoring of biodiversity change in Arctic freshwaters is currently inadequate, making it difficult, if not impossible, to predict changes in ecosystem services.Synthesis and applications. We propose a three‐step approach to better address and facilitate monitoring of the rapid ecological changes that Arctic freshwater ecosystems are currently experiencing as a result of climate change. First, we should increase our efforts in the monitoring of freshwaters across all Arctic countries by setting up a network of monitoring sites and devoting more effort to a broad‐scale baseline survey using standardized methods. Second, we should enhance modelling efforts to include both ecological change and socio‐economic development. These models should help pinpoint species, ecosystems and geographical areas that are likely to show abrupt changes in response to any changes. Third, we should increase interaction among scientists, policymakers and different stakeholder groups. In particular, Indigenous Peoples must be involved in the leadership, planning and execution of monitoring and assessment activities of Arctic freshwaters. The proposed approach, which is critical to detecting the effects of climate change in the circumpolar region, has broader applications for global coordination of Arctic freshwater biomonitoring. Through routine monitoring, standardization of methods, enhanced modelling of integrated scientific and socio‐economic change, and increased collaboration within and among sectors, more effective monitoring and management of climate change impacts on freshwater biodiversity will be possible in the Arctic and globally. Citizen science data (CSD) have the potential to be a powerful scientific approach to assess, monitor and predict biodiversity. Here, we ask whether CSD could be used to predict biodiversity of recently constructed man-made habitats. Biodiversity data on adult dragonfly abundance from all kinds of aquatic habitats collected by citizen scientists (volunteers) were retrieved from the Swedish Species Observation System and were compared with dragonfly abundance in man-made stormwater ponds. The abundance data of dragonflies in the stormwater ponds were collected with a scientific, standardized design. Our results showed that the citizen science datasets differed significantly from datasets collected scientifically in stormwater ponds. Hence, we could not predict biodiversity in stormwater ponds from the data collected by citizen scientists. Using CSD from past versus recent years or from small versus large areas surrounding the stormwater ponds did not change the outcome of our tests. However, we found that biodiversity patterns obtained with CSD were similar to those from stormwater ponds when we restricted our analyses to rare species. We also found a higher beta diversity for the CSD compared to the stormwater dataset. Our results suggest that if CSD are to be used for estimating or predicting biodiversity, we need to develop methods that take into account or correct for the under-reporting of common species in CSD. Beta diversity can be analysed using various approaches, but those integrating site and species contributions to beta diversity are rare in floodplain lake systems. We analysed the beta diversity of rotifers and cladocerans across 50 floodplain lakes in Brazil, focusing on both pelagic and littoral zones. We partitioned beta diversity into local contributions (LCBD), species contributions (SCBD), and related LCBD with environmental variables and SCBD with species features. We expected lower species richness and higher ecological uniqueness for both groups in the pelagic zones than in the littoral zones. The highest ecological uniqueness and low species richness were detected in the pelagic zone, whereas the littoral zones had high species richness and low ecological uniqueness. We found a negative relationship between species richness and LCBD for rotifers, but no significant relationship was detected for cladocerans. Nitrate, transparency and conductivity affected variation in ecological uniqueness. Common and accessory species had higher contributions to beta diversity compared with rare species. The SCBD of rotifers and cladocerans showed similar responses based on occurrence and density data. We suggest that the use of zooplankton assemblages to determine conservation actions across floodplain lakes should be based on different biological groups and lake zones. The inclusion of littoral zones adds to our knowledge of zooplankton biodiversity that has typically been based on studies of pelagic zones, and may have implications for the conservation planning of floodplain lakes. Although it is widely known that dams can have large impacts on the environmental and biological characteristics of downstream rivers, there is a substantial lack of studies focusing on which ecological processes cause longitudinal changes in biological communities downstream of reservoirs. We investigated longitudinal patterns in the total beta diversity and its replacement and richness difference components for actively (fish) and passively (phytoplankton) dispersing biological groups. Our results, obtained from a 230 km sampling stretch, demonstrated the key role played by tributaries in the downstream direction from main river impoundment, which influenced local environmental conditions and beta diversity patterns of each biological group. Both replacement and richness difference contributed to high values of total beta diversity for fish (average = 0.77) and phytoplankton (average = 0.79), but their relative importance was more associated with the replacement component for both biological groups (average = 0.45 and 0.52, respectively). Moreover, we observed clear differences between fish and phytoplankton in beta diversity patterns operating at small and broad scales, as well as in the mechanisms driving each beta diversity component. Directional dispersal-related processes and environmental filtering played a major role in shaping total beta diversity and its components for fish, while temporal factors explained considerable parts of phytoplankton beta diversity. Our findings contributed to understanding of tributary-induced heterogeneity and highlight the importance of dam-free stretches of rivers for preserving the integrity of dammed river basins. Aim: Ecogeographical patterns have been widely studied in endothermic vertebrates, but relatively few studies have simultaneously examined patterns and causes of gradients in species richness, range size and body size in ectothermic insects. We examined patterns in species richness, mean range size and mean body size of ground beetle assemblages across the biogeographical provinces of Northern Europe, a region that was mostly covered by ice sheets during the latest Ice Age and that presents strong contemporary climatic gradients. Location: Northern Europe. Methods: We used literature information on the occurrence of ground beetles, and analysed patterns in species richness, mean range size and mean body size across the provinces using generalized linear models and boosted regression tree (BRT) analysis. Results: We found a strongly decreasing gradient in species richness with increasing latitude, a strongly unimodal range size‐latitude relationship, and a weak unimodal body size‐latitude relationship in entire ground beetle assemblages. These gradients also varied among four major genera, suggesting that the overall patterns result from the nuances of smaller clades of ground beetles. The relative importance of contemporary environmental drivers also varied between species richness, mean range size and mean body size in BRT analysis. While species richness increased with mean annual temperature, mean range size showed an opposite relationship. Mean body size was most clearly associated with the precipitation of the driest month. Main Conclusions: Our findings showed that the latitudinal species richness gradient was strong, and it was closely related to concomitant variation in temperature, whereas variations in mean range size and mean body size were more complex. River regulation for hydropower is undertaken worldwide, causing profound alterations to hydrological regimes and running water habitats. Regulated catchments are often subjected to additional stressors, arising inter alia from agriculture, forestry and industry, which are likely to interact with impacts of river regulation on fish and other biota. Such interactions are poorly understood, hindering planning of effective mitigation and restoration.We investigated fish responses to increased discharge (as a restoration measure) in regulated rivers in Sweden. We compiled electrofishing data from river channels downstream of hydropower dams, each of which either has or lacks a mandated minimum discharge corresponding to c. 5% of pre‐regulation discharge. We further analysed interactions between flow restoration and co‐occurring local and regional stressors.River channels without a mandated minimum discharge were characterized by a low diversity of fish species with traits favouring persistence under unpredictable environmental conditions, including omnivory, short life cycles and small size. Additional stressors further reduced diversity and increased dominance by broad‐niched, opportunistic species.Both the presence and magnitude of a mandated minimum discharge were positively related to fish diversity and density, and the relative density of three economically and recreationally valuable species. However, the size of these relationships frequently varied with the presence of additional stressors.Increasing levels of hydrological degradation and reduced connectivity at the catchment scale reduced positive flow–ecology relationships and hindered the restoration of fish communities towards reference conditions. However, application of a mandated minimum discharge also assisted in mitigating impacts of some co‐occurring stressors, especially reduced riparian integrity.Synthesis and applications. Additional stressors can strongly influence the outcomes of flow restoration for fish community diversity and composition. 1. Ecogeographical rules refer to recurring patterns in nature, including the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG), Rapoport's rule and Bergmann's rule, amongst others. In the present study, the existence of these rules was examined for diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), a family of aquatic predatory beetles. 2. Assemblage‐level data were analysed for diving beetles, focusing on species richness, local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD), mean range size and mean body size across the biogeographical provinces of Northern Europe. First, each of these variables was correlated with latitude, and then variation in each variable was modelled using actual environmental variables in boosted regression tree analysis. 3. Species richness was found to decrease with latitude, LCBD increased with latitude, mean range size did not show a significant relationship with latitude, and mean body size decreased with latitude. The latter finding was in contrast to Bergmann's rule. The actual environmental variables best predicting variation in these four response variables varied among the models, although they generally included temperature‐related and land use variables as the most influential ones. 4. The results obtained in the present study suggest that diving beetles conformed to the LDG, did not follow Rapoport's rule, and showed a reversed latitudinal gradient in the context of Bergmann's rule. In addition, species‐poor provinces harboured ecologically most unique faunas, suggesting that species richness and LCBD are complementary measures of biodiversity. 5. Even though general support was not found for most of the ecogeographical rules examined, the findings of the present study are interesting because they suggest that aquatic ectothermic invertebrates may show patterns different from those originally described for terrestrial endothermic vertebrates. A multi‐faceted assessment of diversity is needed to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying biodiversity patterns and to reveal the impacts of land use alterations on β‐diversity. In this study, we analysed stream fish β‐diversity based on taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic facets in an intensively cultivated tropical region.We sampled 43 stream reaches in the northwest of São Paulo State, south‐eastern Brazil. Each sampling site was characterised according to catchment‐scale features, landscape dynamic indicators, local‐scale features, and distance between stream reaches as network distance (a proxy for dispersal processes). As response variables, we considered taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic β‐diversities coupled with a null‐model approach. For each β‐diversity metric, we calculated the mean overall value and tested whether the mean value was different from that expected by chance. To examine variation in β‐diversity for the three facets and determine the relative contributions of predictor variables, we used a distance‐based approach.Taxonomic and functional β‐diversities were higher from the expected value under a null model, suggesting that community assembly of these facets was dominated by deterministic processes. In contrast, phylogenetic β‐diversity was not different from that expected by chance, suggesting that the lineage composition of these assemblages was random. Furthermore, for all three facets, there was a positive environment‐β‐diversity relationship that was determined primarily by local‐scale features, whereas catchment features and landscape dynamic indicators were not important. In addition, none of the β‐diversity facets was correlated with stream network distance, indicating that dispersal processes were not strongly structuring fish assemblages.Our study suggested that although multiple facets of stream fish β‐diversity are ruled mainly by deterministic processes (e.g. species sorting), stochasticity is also important in community assembly. An interesting finding was the mismatch between phylogenetic versus taxonomic and functional β‐diversity. It is likely that the lack of non‐random structure in phylogenetic β‐diversity is due to the variation of phylogenetic signal in some functional traits. Given that landscape dynamic indicators were not correlated with measures of β‐diversity, we suggest that the recent sugarcane expansion in our study area probably has not critically affected stream fish β‐diversity. Also, it is possible that catchment variables presented little variability and did not overwhelm the effect of local environmental variables on β‐diversity.In conclusion, our study suggests that even highly disturbed tropical agroecosystems with a pool of species that is probably decimated, can still display a relatively high β‐diversity determined mainly by species sorting. These findings suggest key environmental features that must be considered in restoration or conservation of β‐diversity in agroecosystems. Specifically, since variation in β‐diversity was explained mainly by local‐scale environmental gradients, conservation schemes would ideally protect enough sites to capture this entire gradient. Overall, the knowledge of multiple facets can foment more effective conservation and restoration actions by providing a more comprehensive view of the structuring factors of assemblages. Aim: We examined the responses of the beta diversity of aquatic and terrestrial beetles to ecogeographical variables, including climate, land cover and land use, across Northern Europe. Location: Northern Europe (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland). Methods: Information on the occurrence of ground beetles and diving beetles across Northern European biogeographical provinces was collated from literature sources. Beta diversity was examined using Jaccard dissimilarity coefficient as well as its replacement and richness difference components. Each of the three dissimilarity matrices (responses) was modelled using various ecogeographical variables (predictors) by generalized dissimilarity modelling (GDM). Results: The magnitude of total beta diversity was relatively similar between ground beetles and diving beetles, but the richness difference component contributed more than the replacement component to total beta diversity in ground beetles, whereas the opposite was true for diving beetles. The predictor variables most influential in GDM in accounting for spatial variation in beta diversity varied between the two beetle groups as well as between the replacement and richness difference components. In general, the richness difference component of ground beetles responded strongly to latitude and associated climatic variables, whereas the replacement component of diving beetles varied strongly along the same geographical gradient. Main conclusions: Our findings suggest that the study of the determinants of biodiversity patterns benefits from the partitioning of beta diversity into different components and from comparing terrestrial and aquatic groups. For example, our findings suggest that the strong climatic and land use‐related gradients in beta diversity have important implications for predicting and mitigating the effect of ongoing global change on the composition of regional biotas. The degree to which species ecological and biological traits determine their distribution and abundance has intrigued ecologists for a long time, and it has seen a revival in recent years. This topic is important because it provides information about the determinants of species rarity and their conservation implications. We examined the effects of niche breadth, niche position, biological traits and taxonomic relatedness on the interspecific occupancy–abundance relationship, as well as on occupancy and abundance, in lake littoral macroinvertebrates. We sampled 48 lakes in a boreal lake district, found altogether 155 species, and calculated regional occupancy (as the proportion of sites occupied) and local abundance (as mean abundance at occupied sites) for each species. We determined niche position and niche breadth for each species using the outlying mean index analysis. Also, we calculated trait vectors and taxonomic vectors describing species trait similarity and taxonomic relatedness, respectively, using principal coordinates analysis. We found a strong positive occupancy–abundance relationship that was mostly explained by among‐species variation in niche position, followed by niche breadth. Instead, trait vectors and taxonomic vectors tended to be less important in affecting occupancy and abundance than the niche features. Our results strongly suggest that niche position, a measure of habitat availability for littoral macroinvertebrates, is the chief determinant of their occupancy and abundance. This finding has important implications for ecology and conservation of species, as species with marginal niche position, a reflection of low habitat availability, are both regionally rare and locally uncommon. Geodiversity, i.e. the variety of the abiotic environment, is considered to be positively correlated to biodiversity. In streams, the importance of physical heterogeneity for biodiversity variation is well known, but the usefulness of explicitly measured geodiversity indices to account for biodiversity has not been tested. We developed a technique to measure in-stream geodiversity, based on different types of stream flow, geomorphological processes and landforms observed from photographs taken during the field work, and substrates based on traditional field observations. We further tested the utility of these geodiversity measures in explaining variation in the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates in near-pristine streams. Our specific objective was to examine the explanatory power of geodiversity compared to traditional environmental variables, such as water chemistry, depth and current velocity. While most biodiversity indices correlated more strongly with traditional environmental variables, the influence of geodiversity on biodiversity was also evident. Unique effect of flow richness on species richness and that of total geodiversity on functional richness were higher than those of the traditional environmental variables. Our findings suggested that in-stream geodiversity offers a valuable concept for characterizing stream habitats. If further developed and tested, in-stream geodiversity can be used as a cost-efficient proxy to explain variation in biodiversity in stream environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Aim: Biological diversity typically varies between climatically different regions, and regions closer to the equator often support higher numbers of taxa than those closer to the poles. However, these trends have been assessed for a few organism groups, and the existing studies have rarely been based on extensive identical surveys in different climatic regions. Location: We conducted standardized surveys of wadeable streams in a boreal (western Finland) and a subtropical (south‐eastern Brazil) region, sampling insects identically from 100 streams in each region and measuring the same environmental variables in both regions. Taxon: Aquatic insects. Methods: Comparisons were made at the scales of local stream sites, drainage basins and entire regions. We standardized the spatial extent of the study areas by resampling regional richness based on subsets of sites with similar extents. We examined differences in genus richness and assemblage abundance patterns between the regions using graphical and statistical modelling approaches. Results: We found that while genus accumulation and rank‐abundance curves were relatively similar at the regional scale between Finland and Brazil, regional genus richness was higher in the latter but regional abundance much higher in the former region. These regional patterns for richness and abundance were reproduced by basin and local genus richness that were higher in Brazil than in Finland, and assemblage abundance that was much higher in Finland than in Brazil. The magnitude of the difference in genus richness between Brazil and Finland tended to increase from local through basin to regional scales. Main conclusions: Our findings suggest that factors related to evolutionary diversification might explain differences in genus richness between these two climatically different regions, whereas higher nutrient concentrations of stream waters might explain the higher abundance of insects in Finland than in Brazil. Aim: Analysing the spatio‐temporal patterns and dynamics of non‐native species is essential to understanding the mechanisms underlying successful invasions and developing effective management strategies. Yet, such analyses generally neglect the influence of receiving ecosystem types and non‐native species sources (i.e. alien species, non‐natives originating outside the concerned region; translocated species, non‐natives introduced to locations outside their historical range within the concerned region). Location: Yunnan, China. Methods: We analysed long‐term (1950–2022) spatio‐temporal patterns and potential underlying dynamics of non‐native fishes in a biodiversity hotspot (Yunnan, China), paying special attention to waterbody types receiving non‐native species and comparing alien and translocated species. We did this through compiling a highly comprehensive occurrence dataset of native and non‐native fishes. Results: We recorded 783 native species and 94 non‐native species (49 alien species and 45 translocated species), which mainly belonged to the order Cypriniformes (52 species) and were introduced via purposes for advancing aquaculture. Most frequently encountered non‐native species were either intentionally introduced aquaculture species or small‐bodied fish unintentionally introduced via aquaculture activities. The richness and spatial ranges of non‐native fishes increased consistently since the 1950s and demonstrated a pronounced change after the 2000s, with densely populated areas and the middle to lower reaches of large rivers being more profoundly affected. The number of records of translocated species exceeded the number of records of alien species after the 2000s. Lakes and reservoirs are hotspots for both alien and translocated species introductions, and watersheds with large areas in Yunnan (e.g. the Jinsha‐Yangtze and Lancang‐Mekong basins) contained more non‐native fish. Main Conclusions: Our study highlights the need to consider invasion sensitivities of receiving ecosystems and pay special attention to intra‐regional species translocations when developing prevention and management strategies against invasions of alien species, particularly in important biodiversity hotspots around the world. Aim: A key aspect of biodiversity research is to determine the environmental drivers affecting the degree to which ecological assemblages vary in space (beta diversity). The strength and significance of environmental drivers of beta diversity is, however, influenced by the spatial extent over which beta diversity is assessed. Beta diversity of riverine biota is affected by flow variability. We examined hydrology–beta diversity relationships at two spatial extents (reaches vs. entire systems) within rivers to determine if relationships with hydrological variables are scale dependent or generalisable across spatial scales. Location: Murray–Darling Basin, Australia. Taxon: Freshwater fish. Methods: Fish assemblage data were sourced from two monitoring programmes that sampled sites annually during 2014–2019 and spanned either reaches (<100 km) or the broader 'system' extent (>1000 km) of five tributaries. Beta diversity was examined by calculating pairwise (incidence and abundance) dissimilarities for each year to compare temporal trends in beta diversity. Multi‐site dissimilarities were modelled against hydrological variables using beta regression. Results: Inter‐annual change in assemblage composition was detected only at the extent of river reaches but not at the extent of river systems. Temporal variation in within‐river beta diversity showed inconsistent patterns when compared between the two spatial extents. Within‐river beta diversity relationships with hydrological gradients were inconsistent among rivers. Overall, statistical models explained much more variation in within‐river beta diversity when assessed at the reach extent when compared to broader river system extents. Main Conclusions: Our findings highlight that changes in within‐river beta diversity are likely to depend on the spatial extent of sampling. Furthermore, inconsistent beta diversity–hydrology relationships among rivers suggest that both empirical evidence and theoretical predictions adopted in ecohydrology may not be transferable among river systems. 1. Rivers are spatially organised into hierarchic dendritic networks. This unique physical structure and the associated directionality of physical flows set them apart from most other environments by regulating the dispersal of resident biota and therefore the distribution of biodiversity. 2. The aim of this special issue is to highlight the importance of the river network on structuring biodiversity, particularly through metacommunity dynamics and associated dispersal processes. 3. The issue covers a wide range of topics, including disease spread, nutrient uptake, trophic dynamics, effects of anthropogenic stressors and the joint roles of dispersal and environmental filtering. Contributions employ a broad range of approaches, including field and laboratory experiments, modelling, population genetics and conceptual synthesis. 4. Although these studies represent just a sample of the research that is being performed on biodiversity and metacommunity dynamics in river networks, several important findings have emerged; a common theme being that the structure of the network and spatial dynamics clearly influence the dynamics of populations and communities, and their functions. By taking a broad taxonomic focus (from diatoms and protists to fish), and spanning a large geographic gradient (from the tropics to the subarctic), this special issue provides a broad look at the dynamics that occur in river networks relating to their unique makeup. Aim The number of studies investigating the nestedness and turnover components of beta diversity has increased substantially, but our general understanding of the drivers of turnover and nestedness remains elusive. Here, we examined the effects of species traits, spatial extent, latitude and ecosystem type on the nestedness and turnover components of beta diversity. Location Global. Time period 1968-2017. Major taxa studied From bacteria to mammals. Methods From the 99 studies that partition total beta diversity into its turnover and nestedness components, we assembled 269 and 259 data points for the pairwise and multiple site beta-diversity metrics, respectively. Our data covered a broad variation in species dispersal type, body size and trophic position. The data were from freshwater, marine and terrestrial realms, and encompassed geographical areas from the tropics to near polar regions. We used linear modelling as a meta-regression tool to analyse the data. Results Pairwise turnover, multiple site turnover and total beta diversity all decreased significantly with latitude. In contrast, multiple site nestedness showed a positive relationship with latitude. Beta-diversity components did not generally differ among the realms. The turnover component and total beta diversity increased with spatial extent, whereas nestedness was scale invariant for pairwise metrics. Multiple site beta-diversity components did not vary with spatial extent. Surprisingly, passively dispersed organisms had lower turnover and total beta diversity than flying organisms. Body size showed a relatively weak relationship with beta diversity but had important interactions with trophic position, thus also affecting beta diversity via interactive effects. Producers had significantly higher average pairwise turnover and total beta diversity than carnivores. Main conclusions The present results provide evidence that species turnover, being consistently the larger component of total beta diversity, and nestedness are related to the latitude of the study area and intrinsic organismal features. We showed that two beta-diversity components had generally opposing patterns with regard to latitude. We highlight that beta-diversity partition may give additional insights into the underlying causes of spatial variability in biotic communities compared with total beta diversity alone. Advances in metacommunity theory have made a significant contribution to understanding the drivers of variation in biological communities. However, there has been limited empirical research exploring the expression of metacommunity theory for two fundamental components of beta diversity: nestedness and species turnover. In this paper, we examine the influence of local environmental and a range of spatial variables (hydrological connectivity, proximity and overall spatial structure) on total beta diversity and the nestedness and turnover components of beta diversity for the entire macroinvertebrate community and active and passively dispersing taxa within pond habitats. High beta diversity almost entirely reflects patterns of species turnover (replacement) rather than nestedness (differences in species richness) in our dataset. Local environmental variables were the main drivers of total beta diversity, nestedness and turnover when the entire community was considered and for both active and passively dispersing taxa. The influence of spatial processes on passively dispersing taxa, total beta diversity and nestedness was significantly greater than for actively dispersing taxa. Our results suggest that species sorting (local environmental variables) operating through niche processes was the primary mechanism driving total beta diversity, nestedness and turnover for the entire community and active and passively dispersing taxa. In contrast, spatial factors (hydrological connectivity, proximity and spatial eigenvectors) only exerted a secondary influence on the nestedness and turnover components of beta diversity. Community ecology has broadened considerably with the recognition that it is not only at the species-level data where biological patterns and their determinants should be studied. Rather, also functional and phylogenetic data should be examined, as they may provide important information for both basic ecology and applied fields such as conservation and bioassessment. We thus explored the distance decay of taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic community compositions along spatial and environmental gradients within a boreal lake metacommunity. We used distance-based methods (i.e., Mantel test, Mantel correlograms and db-RDA) to examine different facets (i.e., taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic) and components (i.e., total, turnover and nestedness-resultant) in relation to spatial and environmental variables. We found that the species compositions of lake benthic invertebrate communities varied mostly along environmental gradients, but were also weakly related to spatial distances between lakes. We also showed that functional and phylogenetic compositions were solely related to environmental variation across the lakes, but these relationships were generally weak. Our exploration of different facets and components of beta diversity added to the knowledge of lake invertebrate communities by adding functional and phylogenetic views, which has rarely been done in studies of aquatic metacommunities. Recent studies have found that the relative importance of predictors of metacommunity structure is dependent on different factors. Low explanatory power of multivariate models is a frequent result. To increase this power, ecologists have suggested different strategies, including the use of functional approaches. Using a phytoplankton dataset from 17 reservoirs in Southern Brazil, sampled seasonally over eight years, we tested the hypothesis that the explanatory power of multivariate models would be higher when the analyses were based on functional groups than when based on a taxonomic approach. We also modeled the temporal variation in the strength of species sorting (as given by the adjusted coefficient of determination derived from environmental variables). We found high temporal variability in the strength of species sorting, indicating that results from snapshot surveys should be interpreted cautiously. When compared to the taxonomic approach, we did not find an increase in the explanatory power of multivariate models when the analyses were based on a functional approach. The main correlates of the temporal variation in the strength of species sorting were insolation, water temperature, and environmental heterogeneity, suggesting that conditions related to productivity and heterogeneity are important in determining the role of species sorting in phytoplankton communities. Recent studies have shown that species, functional and phylogenetic diversity are related to different environmental drivers, suggesting that different aspects of alpha diversity may be complementary and may provide different information about community assembly. Such multi-facet community assembly studies are, however, rare in the freshwater realm., We examined the responses of species richness, functional alpha diversity and phylogenetic alpha diversity of littoral macroinvertebrates to environmental gradients in near-pristine boreal lakes. We also examined community assembly mechanisms using null models of functional or phylogenetic clustering, overdispersion and randomness as indications of different assembly mechanisms., We found that the alpha diversity indices examined responded differently to the underlying environmental gradients. Also, phylogenetic and functional alpha diversity indices showed different levels of overdispersion, clustering and randomness, which also varied slightly between the analyses based on abundance and presence-absence data. These results suggested that different alpha diversity indices may provide different information about overdispersion (e.g. caused by biotic interactions) and clustering (e.g. caused by environmental filtering), and emphasised the fact that most individual lakes were inhabited by species that were merely random draws from the functional or phylogenetic species pools available in the study region., Our findings suggested that some individual lakes are assembled by deterministic mechanisms, including environmental filtering and biotic interactions, whereas most individual lake macroinvertebrate communities constitute random draws from the regional species pool or are affected by the antagonistic effects of different assembly processes. Dispersal is one of the key mechanisms affecting the distribution of individuals, populations, and communities in nature. Despite advances in the study of single species, it has been notoriously difficult to account for dispersal in multispecies metacommunities, where it potentially has strong effects on community structure beyond those of local environmental conditions. Dispersal should thus be directly integrated in both basic and applied research by using proxies. Here, we review the use of proxies in the current metacommunity research, suggest new proxies, and discuss how proxies could be used in community modelling, particularly in freshwater systems. We suggest that while traditional proxies may still be useful, proxies formerly utilized in transport geography may provide useful novel insights into the structuring of biological communities in freshwater systems. We also suggest that understanding the utility of such proxies for dispersal in metacommunities is highly important for many applied fields such as freshwater bioassessment, conservation planning, and recolonization research in the context of restoration ecology. These research fields have often ignored spatial dynamics and focused mostly on local environmental conditions and changes therein. Analysing the beta diversity components and spatial patterns of species distribution may provide key insights into how local communities respond to human-induced environmental changes. Indeed, analysing temporal variation in spatial patterns of species distribution may reveal trends of biotic homogenisation and its likely causes., We used an eight-year phytoplankton data set generated from to 17 reservoirs in Brazil to analyse the temporal variability in beta diversity and its turnover and nestedness components. This data set was also used to determine metacommunity structures across these subtropical reservoirs. We tested whether there was any long-term temporal trend in beta diversity that might be indicative of biotic homogenisation or differentiation. We also tested how temporal variation was related to climatic conditions, environmental heterogeneity, productivity and cyanobacterial dominance. Lastly, we verified whether the phytoplankton metacommunity showed non-random structure., We did not find supporting evidence for biotic homogenisation among the reservoirs. Rather, we did find that nestedness decreased during the study. Environmental heterogeneity was the main variable positively related to phytoplankton beta diversity, while high ammonium concentration and cyanobacterial abundance were negatively correlated with spatial variation among the reservoirs. Despite the noticeable temporal variation in metacommunity structures, the phytoplankton species responded similar to latent environmental gradients. Clementsian patterns found mainly in fall and winter were consistent with differences in species composition between sites, reinforcing the role of environmental filtering in driving changes in these metacommunities., Our results suggest that eutrophication control is essential to prevent biotic homogenisation, at least in our study system. Metacommunity structure may be strongly influenced by spatial dynamics and environmental factors, as well as biogeographic effects. Here, we examined variation in lake cladoceran communities associated with floating macrophytes in the four major Brazilian floodplain systems (Amazônia, Araguaia, Pantanal and Paraná) in relation to local environmental factors, spatial components, climate variables and basin identity., Moran's eigenvector maps were used as a proxy to examine spatial structures within each drainage basin. The final sets of local environmental, climate and spatial variables were selected for constrained ordination models, using a forward selection method. We used variation partitioning to decompose variation in cladoceran community composition in relation to the four sets of predictor variables. Beta-diversity indices were calculated to quantify the contributions of turnover and nestedness components to total beta diversity of cladocerans within each basin and across the basins., Variation partitioning showed that the pure fractions were relatively small, ranging from around zero for spatial and basin identity variables to 2% for climate variables and 4% for local environmental variables. The shared effect of local environmental, climate and basin identity was considerable, accounting for 17% of the total variance. Furthermore, the shared effect of climate and basin identity was also considerable (6%). In total, 32% of variation in cladoceran community structure could be explained by our predictor variables. Cladoceran metacommunities showed high levels of beta diversity attributed to the turnover component, within each floodplain and across all four floodplains., Our finding showed that species sorting was likely to be the main agent structuring cladoceran communities. Spatial processes were not important at very large spatial scales, contrary to what has been found in previous studies. Although several studies have examined the functional diversity of freshwater macroinvertebrates, the variety of methodologies combined with the absence of a synthetic review make our understanding of this field incomplete. Therefore, we reviewed the current methodology for assessing functional diversity in freshwater macroinvertebrate research. Our review showed that most papers quantified functional diversity using biological traits, among which feeding habits were the most common traits probably due to the assumed links between feeding and ecosystem functions. A large number of diversity measures have been applied for quantifying functional diversity of freshwater macroinvertebrate assemblages, among which Rao's quadratic entropy looks like the most frequent. In most papers, functional diversity was positively related to taxon richness, and functional redundancy was a key concept in explaining this correlation. Most studies detected strong influence of the environmental factors as well as human impact on functional diversity. Finally, our review revealed that functional diversity research is biased towards European running waters and is hindered by yet insufficient information on the autecology of macroinvertebrates. City ponds have the potential to harbour a rich biodiversity of aquatic insects despite being located in an urban landscape. However, our current knowledge on the correlates of pond biodiversity is limited and even less is known about the factors that influence the ecological uniqueness of urban ponds. The multiple environmental gradients, at different spatial scales, that may affect biodiversity and ecological uniqueness of urban ponds can thus be seen both as an opportunity and as a challenge for a study. In this study, we aimed to fill this gap by focusing on aquatic insect assemblages in 51 ponds in the Swedish city of Stockholm, using a metacommunity perspective. We found that species richness was primarily determined by the density of aquatic insects, water depth and proportion of buildings around the pond. The uniqueness of ponds was estimated as local contributions to beta diversity (LCBD), and it was primarily related to the proportion of arable land and industry around the ponds. With regard to the metacommunity we found two interesting patterns. First, there was a negative relationship between richness and LCBD. Second, biodiversity was spatially independent, suggesting that spatially-patterned dispersal did not structure species richness or LCBD. These last two patterns are important when considering conservation efforts of biodiversity in city ponds. We hence suggest that the conservation of insect biodiversity in urban pond should consider the surroundings of the ponds, and that high-richness ponds are not necessarily those that require most attention because they are not ecologically the most unique. Metacommunity patterns and underlying processes in aquatic organisms have typically been studied within a drainage basin. We examined variation in the composition of six freshwater organismal groups across various drainage basins in Finland. We first modelled spatial structures within each drainage basin using Moran eigenvector maps. Second, we partitioned variation in community structure among three groups of predictors using constrained ordination: (1) local environmental variables, (2) spatial variables, and (3) dummy variable drainage basin identity. Third, we examined turnover and nestedness components of multiple-site beta diversity, and tested the best fit patterns of our datasets using the 'elements of metacommunity structure' analysis. Our results showed that basin identity and local environmental variables were significant predictors of community structure, whereas within-basin spatial effects were typically negligible. In half of the organismal groups (diatoms, bryophytes, zooplankton), basin identity was a slightly better predictor of community structure than local environmental variables, whereas the opposite was true for the remaining three organismal groups (insects, macrophytes, fish). Both pure basin and local environmental fractions were, however, significant after accounting for the effects of the other predictor variable sets. All organismal groups exhibited high levels of beta diversity, which was mostly attributable to the turnover component. Our results showed consistent Clementsian-type metacommunity structures, suggesting that subgroups of species responded similarly to environmental factors or drainage basin limits. We conclude that aquatic communities across large scales are mostly determined by environmental and basin effects, which leads to high beta diversity and prevalence of Clementsian community types. It was recently suggested that beta diversity can be partitioned into contributions of single sites to overall beta diversity (LCBD) or into contributions of individual species to overall beta diversity (SCBD). We explored the relationships of LCBD and SCBD to site and species characteristics, respectively, in stream insect assemblages. We found that LCBD was mostly explained by variation in species richness, with a negative relationship being detected. SCBD was strongly related to various species characteristics, such as occupancy, abundance, niche position and niche breadth, but was only weakly related to biological traits of species. In particular, occupancy and its quadratic terms showed a very strong unimodal relationship with SCBD, suggesting that intermediate species in terms of site occupancy contribute most to beta diversity. Our findings of unravelling the contributions of sites or species to overall beta diversity are of high importance to community ecology, conservation and bioassessment using stream insect assemblages, and may bear some overall generalities to be found in other organism groups. Species distributions can be analysed under two perspectives: the niche-based approach, which focuses on species-environment relationships; and the dispersal-based approach, which focuses on metapopulation dynamics. The degree to which each of these two components affect species distributions may depend on habitat fragmentation, species traits and phylogenetic constraints. We analysed the distributions of 36 stream insect species across 60 stream sites in three drainage basins at high latitudes in Finland. We used binomial generalised linear models (GLMs) in which the predictor variables were environmental factors (E models), within-basin spatial variables as defined by Moran's eigenvector maps (M models), among-basin variability (B models), or a combination of the three (E + M + B models) sets of variables. Based on a comparative analysis, model performance was evaluated across all the species using Gaussian GLMs whereby the deviance accounted for by binomial GLMs was fitted on selected explanatory variables: niche position, niche breadth, site occupancy, biological traits and taxonomic relatedness. For each type of model, a reduced Gaussian GLM was eventually obtained after variable selection (Bayesian information criterion). We found that niche position was the only variable selected in all reduced models, implying that marginal species were better predicted than non-marginal species. The influence of niche position was strongest in models based on environmental variables (E models) or a combination of all types of variables (E + M + B models), and weakest in spatial autocorrelation models (M models). This suggests that species-environment relationships prevail over dispersal processes in determining stream insect distributions at a regional scale. Our findings have clear implications for biodiversity conservation strategies, and they also emphasise the benefits of considering both the niche-based and dispersal-based approaches in species distribution modelling studies. 1. Differences in the composition of ecological communities among rivers with contrasting flow regimes have been detected in many regions worldwide. However, we know little of how climatic variation alters these spatial patterns for constituent species with varying dispersal modes and strengths. 2. We predicted that beta diversity (spatial variation in composition) of macro in vertebrate and fish assemblages among streams with near-perennial, mildly intermittent and highly intermittent flow regimes would be greater during prolonged drought than under wetter climate conditions. We hypothesised that changes in beta diversity between these climate phases would be greater for taxa with stronger dispersal ability. We tested these predictions with biomonitoring data from Australian subtropical rivers. 3. Differences in average community composition among flow regimes were statistically significant for six groups of macroinvertebrates with differing dispersal (non-swimmers, weak swimmers, strong swimmers, non-fliers, weak fliers and strong fliers) and two groups of fish (potamodromous and diadromous), but not for locally dispersing fish. For each of these biotic groups, shifts in assemblage composition between supra-seasonal drought and a subsequent non-drought period were either statistically non-significant or of similar magnitude among flow regimes. Therefore, beta diversity among flow regimes did not change significantly with climate phase. 4. Beta diversity within flow-regime classes was greater during the drought than afterwards or not significantly different between climate phases, depending on the flow regime and biotic group. Stronger powers of flight were associated with greater change in beta diversity between climate phases in near-perennial streams, but stronger powers of swimming were not. Within-regime beta diversity was driven more by replacement of taxa among samples than by nestedness, except for diadromous fish in near-perennial streams. 5. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that decreasing hydrological connectivity and greater environmental heterogeneity during prolonged drought increase beta diversity of stream communities. However, changes in beta diversity between climate phases were not as pronounced as we expected. The communities may have been somewhat drought resistant because the magnitude and duration of the drought were within the range of historical variability and because surface water persisted at study sites during drought-imposed flow cessations. Our findings suggest that maintenance of refuge pools will be critical to lessening drought impacts on river biodiversity at landscape scales, particularly if drought duration and intensity increase in the future. Understanding the patterns and ecological determinants of β diversity in freshwater ecosystems is fundamental to biogeography, conservation biology, and environmental management. It has been proposed that β diversity can be divided into contributions of individual sites (LCBD) or species (SCBD) to total β diversity. However, the patterns and underlying mechanisms of LCBD and SCBD remain understudied in freshwater fish. Here, using fish assemblages sampled from the Chishui River basin, we analysed β diversity based on both abundance and presence-absence data. We also examined the relationships between LCBD and SCBD with site (i.e., community abundance, species richness, functional diversity indices, environmental factors, and spatial variables) and species (i.e., occupancy, total abundance, niche position and breadth, and functional traits) characteristics, respectively. Our results revealed that fish LCBD in the Chishui River basin was well explained by both environmental and spatial factors. Fish LCBD was negatively related to species richness and community abundance, showing that sites with high ecological uniqueness generally supported low fish richness and abundance. Furthermore, functional features of fish assemblages were also significantly associated with LCBD, with high LCBD associated with high functional specialization, originality, and uniqueness, but low functional richness, divergence, and dispersion. Abundance-based SCBD showed positive relationships with both occupancy and total abundance, whereas there were hump-shaped relationships between presence-absence SCBD and occupancy and total abundance. Niche position was negatively correlated with SCBD, whereas niche breadth and functional traits were not significant correlates of SCBD. Overall, this study suggests that understanding contributions of sites and species to β diversity is key to understanding biodiversity variation and its applied repercussions. Our results advocate the importance of environmental conditions and between-site connectivity for effective conservation of riverine fish diversity. Urbanization is one of the major drivers of biotic homogenization (i.e., decrease in beta diversity) in freshwater systems. However, only a few studies have simultaneously examined how urbanization affects multiple facets (i.e., taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic) of beta diversity and its underlying ecological drivers in urban river macroinvertebrates. Here, we distinguished the patterns and ecological mechanisms of multiple facets of macroinvertebrate beta diversity weighted by incidence and abundance data in a subtropical river system with a distinct urbanization gradient. We also investigated how total beta diversity patterns stem from replacement versus richness difference among sites. Our results showed that taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversities weighted by incidence data were primarily driven by replacement of taxa, whereas the richness difference contributed more to multiple facets of beta diversity based on abundance data. Furthermore, multiple facets of beta diversity decreased with urbanization for both incidence-weighted and abundance-weighted data, but the former showed more substantial decreases. Both replacement and richness difference components contributed roughly equally to the decline of incidence-weighted beta diversity. In contrast, the losses of abundance-weighted beta diversity were mainly associated with replacement of taxa. Variation partitioning results revealed that all beta diversity measures based on incidence data were governed primarily by local and land-use variables, whereas spatial variables were more relevant in driving beta diversity weighted by abundance data. Overall, by comparing different facets and components of beta diversity weighted by incidence versus abundance data, we suggest that incidence-weighted data may be more sensitive in portraying the impacts of urbanization on macroinvertebrate diversity. Context dependency is an emerging topic that is challenging our understanding of the factors shaping biodiversity in metacommunities. River networks and other dendritic systems provide unique systems for examining variation in the processes shaping biodiversity between different metacommunities., We examined biodiversity patterns in five benthic invertebrate data sets, from two catchments in central Germany, with the aim of exploring context dependency in these systems. We used variance partitioning to disentangle the variation explained in three biodiversity metrics: taxonomic richness, Simpson's diversity and local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD; a measure of the uniqueness of a site). As explanatory variables, we used proxies of network position (i.e. catchment size and altitude) and habitat conditions., Contrary to our expectation, we found no evidence of a decline in LCBD downstream in our study. Local habitat conditions and catchment land use played a much stronger role than catchment size and altitude in explaining variation in the three biodiversity metrics. Observed patterns were highly variable between different data sets in our study. These findings suggest that factors shaping biodiversity patterns in these systems are highly context dependent and less related to their position along the river network than local habitat conditions., Given the clear context dependency between data sets, we urge researchers to focus on disentangling the factors driving the high levels of variability between individual systems through the study of a number of replicate, rather than single, metacommunities. Human-induced loss of environmental heterogeneity may lead to homogenisation of biological communities. However, environmental heterogeneity is important for sustaining current levels of biodiversity. Hence, more ecological research should be directed on understanding the relationships between beta diversity and environmental heterogeneity., Benthic diatoms are among the most extensively studied taxa of primary producers in streams, yet their beta diversity patterns are not well documented at intermediate spatial scales, that is within and among streams, in a catchment., We tested how well one sampling site represents the total diatom diversity of a stream using 10 boreal streams, each comprising 10 sampled riffles. We also examined variation in diatom community structure at two hierarchical scales, within and among streams. Relationships between diatom beta diversity and environmental heterogeneity were studied using a combination of species accumulation curves, canonical analysis of principal coordinates, tests of homogeneity of dispersions and distance-based redundancy analysis., We found large variation in community structure within each stream, which indicates thatone sample is not adequate to represent the diatom diversity of an entire stream. The variation in among-stream diatom community structure was larger than among-stream habitat heterogeneity. Although no positive relationship between within-stream diatom beta diversity and environmental heterogeneity was detected, we found that diatom community variation was significantly related to physical habitat structure and, surprisingly, also to grazer abundance., We recommend that more than one sampling site is included in analyses aiming to cover the diatom diversity of a whole stream. This is especially true for pristine sites with high diatom diversity. In addition, we suggest that researchers incorporate physical and biological factors as explanatory variables when monitoring diatoms both at the within- and among-stream scales. The majority of studies in metacommunity ecology have focused on systems other than marine benthic ecosystems, thereby providing an impetus to broaden the focus of metacommunity research to comprise marine systems. These systems are more open than many other systems and may thus exhibit relatively less discrete patterns in community structure across space. Metacommunity structure of soft-sediment benthic invertebrates was examined using a fine-grained (285 sites) data set collected during one summer across a large spatial extent (1700 km2). We applied the elements of metacommunity structure ( EMS) approach, allowing multiple hypothesis of variation in community structure to be tested. We demonstrated several patterns associated with environmental variation and associated processes that could simultaneously assemble species to occur at the sites. A quasi-Clementsian pattern was observed frequently, suggesting interdependent ecological relationships among species or similar response to an underlying environmental gradient across sites. A quasi-nested clumped species loss pattern was also observed, which suggests nested habitat specialization. Species richness declined with depth (from 0.5 to 44.8 m). We argue that sensitive species may survive in shallower water, which are more stable with regard to oxygen conditions and present greater habitat complexity, in contrast to deeper waters, which may experience periodic disturbance due to hypoxia. Future studies should better integrate disturbance in terms of temporal dynamics and dispersal rates in the EMS approach. We highlight that shallow water sites may act as sources of recruitment to deeper water sites that are relatively more prone to periodic disturbances due to hypoxia.
