3. Discursive manifestations of the statutory child-adult divide in police interviews with suspects aged 17 and 18

Abstract

This study investigates how the statutory divide between children and adults is manifested in the language of police interviews with 17- and 18-year-old suspects. In England and Wales,persons up to and including age 17 are classed as children and therefore considered by default vulnerable. In the context of the legal process, this vulnerability means that suspects are entitled to a number of special measures, the most prominent of which is the mandatory presence of an appropriate adult (parent/guardian or social worker/volunteer) during the police interview. The day a person turns 18 and thus acquires the status of an adult, they are no longer eligible for additional support and are expected to navigate the legal system on their own. Crucially, the change form child to adult happens overnight. Given this statutory divide and the associated special measures for vulnerable interviewees,this study examines how the language of police investigative interviews is affected. The data consist of 19 audio-recorded interviews from two police forces in England, that is, ten interviews with 17-year-old suspects and nine interviews with 18-year-old suspects. Drawing upon a multi-method approach combining tools from Conversation Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis, the data are analysed inductively. The findings reveal both interviewers and suspects discursively orienting to the age divide and associated ideological assumptions by means of marked lexical choices, terms of address, and references. Examinations of the cautioning exchange show a tendency for interviewers engaging in verbal behaviour consistent with tick-box consent (Rock 2016).Finally, this study presents the first qualitative linguistic enquiry into verbal contributions by appropriate adults in interviews with juveniles. It is revealed that whilst their role is overall passive, particularly familial appropriate adults are called upon by suspects to provide practical information, and as a means of corroborating their statements in an attempt to gain credence.

Abstract

Abstract

The authorship verification task at PAN 2022 follows the experimental setup of similar shared tasks in the recent past. However, it focuses on a different, and very challenging scenario: given two texts belonging to different discourse types, the task is to determine whether they are written by the same author. Based on a new corpus in English, we provide pairs of texts using four discourse types: essays, emails, text messages, and business memos. The differences in communicative purpose, intended audience, and the level of formality render the cross-discourse-type authorship verification task very hard. We received 7 submissions and evaluated them using the TIRA integrated research architecture, along with two baseline approaches. This paper reviews the submissions and presents a detailed discussion of the evaluation results.

Abstract

The paper gives a brief overview of the four shared tasks to be organized at the PAN 2022 lab on digital text forensics and stylometry hosted at the CLEF 2022 conference. The tasks include authorship verification across discourse types, multi-author writing style analysis, author profiling, and content profiling. Some of the tasks continue and advance past editions (authorship verification and multi-author analysis) and some are new (profiling irony and stereotypes spreaders and trigger detection). The general goal of the PAN shared tasks is to advance the state of the art in text forensics and stylometry while ensuring objective evaluation on newly developed benchmark datasets.

15. Attributing the Bixby Letter using n-gram tracing

Abstract

There is a long-standing debate around the authorship of the Bixby Letter, one of the most famous pieces of correspondence in American history. Despite being signed by President Abraham Lincoln, some historians have claimed that its true author was John Hay, Lincoln’s personal secretary. Analyses of the letter have been inconclusive in part because the text totals only 139 words and is thus far too short to be attributed using standard methods. To test whether Lincoln or Hay wrote this letter, we therefore introduce and apply a new technique for attributing short texts called n-gram tracing. After demonstrating that our method can distinguish between the known writings of Lincoln and Hay with a very high degree of accuracy, we use it to attribute the Bixby Letter, concluding that the text was authored by John Hay – rewriting this one episode in the history of the United States and offering a solution to one of the most persistent problems in authorship attribution.
