1. Deep and Probabilistic Solar Irradiance Forecast at the Arctic Circle

Abstract

Solar irradiance forecasts can be dynamic and unreliable due to changing weather conditions. Near the Arctic circle, this also translates into a distinct set of further challenges. This work is forecasting solar irradiance with Norwegian data using variations of Long-Short-Term Memory units (LSTMs). In order to gain more trustworthiness of results, the probabilistic approaches Quantile Regression (QR) and Maximum Likelihood (MLE) are optimized on top of the LSTMs, providing measures of uncertainty for the results. MLE is further extended by using a Johnson's SU distribution, a Johnson's SB distribution, and a Weibull distribution in addition to a normal Gaussian to model parameters. Contrary to a Gaussian, Weibull, Johnson's SU and Johnson's SB can return skewed distributions, enabling it to fit the non-normal solar irradiance distribution more optimally. The LSTMs are compared against each other, a simple Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP), and a smart-persistence estimator. The proposed LSTMs are found to be more accurate than smart persistence and the MLP for a multi-horizon, day-ahead (36 hours) forecast. The deterministic LSTM showed better root mean squared error (RMSE), but worse mean absolute error (MAE) than a MLE with Johnson's SB distribution. Probabilistic uncertainty estimation is shown to fit relatively well across the distribution of observed irradiance. While QR shows better uncertainty estimation calibration, MLE with Johnson's SB, Johnson's SU, or Gaussian show better performance in the other metrics employed. Abstract

Vertical bifacial photovoltaic (PV) systems are gaining interest as they can enable deployment of PV in locations with grid or area limitations. Over Easy Solar has developed a lightweight design for vertical bifacial systems for flat roofs employing small modules with the height of one cell. To model the expected output of these type of systems can, however, be challenging, as it is uncertain if conventional models will give accurate results for vertical bifacial PV. The irradiance conditions are different, and there can be other loss or gain mechanisms that are prominent in these types of systems compared to more conventional PV systems. In this study we assess the use of regular transposition modeling for plane of array irradiance modeling for vertical bifacial PV, and we evaluate the performance of Over Easy Solar pilot installations in Norway to identify prominent loss mechanisms. The results are relevant for most vertical bifacial systems. With regular transposition modeling plane of array irradiance is overestimated by less than 1%, but we find that accuracy of albedo input and choice of sky diffuse model impact modeling accuracy. Irradiance losses such as shading are not considered in the modeling. We calculate a median heat transfer coefficient of 55 W/m2K, indicating high heat transfer and low thermal losses. High annual plane-of-array insolation, module bifaciality, interrow shading, reflection losses caused by high angle of incidence of the direct irradiance, and snow also have significant impact on the overall performance.

Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. Abstract

Quantum sensors utilising atom interferometry offer new perspectives for future gravity missions. The atom interferometer therein promises long-term stable measurements and high accuracy, complementing or possibly replacing established sensor concepts.Several different experiments based on this principle demonstrated measurements of gravitational accelerations and gravity gradients. Additionally, dedicated setups showed operation in microgravity environments and tested concepts for future space missions. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Reconstructive surgery is established as a standard treatment option after mastectomy due to cancer. It is crucial to patients to achieve a natural and symmetric looking breast through reconstruction. Anthropometric measurements are used to assess the objective symmetry of the breast, which are prone to errors and difficult to reproduce. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to validate breast volumetry using three-dimensional surface imaging. METHODS: We compared preoperatively analog and digitally evaluated volume of the breast with our gold standard, direct water displacement measurement of the mastectomy specimen. We examined 34 breast specimens in total. RESULTS: Each measurement method (Breast Sculptor, VAM, Breast-V) for breast volume/mass determination demonstrates acceptable agreement ranges when compared with resected volumes and masses. The strongest volumetry instrument is Breast Sculptor (digital), the weakest is Breast-V (analog). CONCLUSIONS: 3D surface imaging is a quick, effective, and convenient method to evaluate breast shape and volume. The accuracy, reproducibility, and reliability of 3D surface imaging were comparable with MRI in our study. This takes us a step closer to the long-term goal of establishing robust instruments to plan breast reconstructive surgery, achieve better surgical results, and contribute to quality assurance in breast surgery. 37. Multiphase Mechanism for the Production of Sulfuric Acid from SO2by Criegee Intermediates Formed during the Heterogeneous Reaction of Ozone with Squalene

Here we report a new multiphase reaction mechanism by which Criegee intermediates (CIs), formed by ozone reactions at an alkene surface, convert SO2to SO3to produce sulfuric acid, a precursor for new particle formation (NPF). During the heterogeneous ozone reaction, in the presence of 220 ppb SO2, an unsaturated aerosol (squalene) undergoes rapid chemical erosion, which is accompanied by NPF. A kinetic model predicts that the mechanism for chemical erosion and NPF originate from a common elementary step (CI + SO2) that produces both gas phase SO3and small ketones. At low relative humidity (RH = 5%), 20% of the aerosol mass is lost, with 17% of the ozone-surface reactions producing SO3. At RH = 60%, the aerosol shrinks by 30%, and the yield of SO3is

Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

47. Probing the Heterogeneous Ozonolysis of Squalene Nanoparticles by Photoemission

Abstract

© 2016 American Chemical Society. The heterogeneous reaction of ozone (O3) with 200 nm squalene nanoparticles is studied using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and ultraviolet (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Photoelectrons are detected from free nanoparticle beams using a velocity map imaging (VMI) spectrometer capable of detecting photoelectrons with up to 40 eV of kinetic energy. Heterogeneous kinetics are quantified using changes in the UPS, XPS, and NEXAFS spectrum, yielding uptake coefficients for the decay of the double bonds in squalene of (3.1 ± 0.7) × 10−4, (2.6 ± 0.6) × 10−4, and (2.9 ± 0.7) × 10−4, respectively. When comparing these values with the uptake coefficient, (1.0 ± 0.2) × 10−3, determined by the molecular decay of squalene measured with aerosol mass spectrometry, it is found that on average 1.6 ± 0.2 double bonds are removed for each ozone-squalene reactive collision, suggesting the importance of evaporation of small molecular weight reaction products from the aerosol. From further analysis of the nanoparticle XPS spectrum, it is found that ozonolysis increases the oxygen-to-carbon (O:C) ratio of the aerosol to 0.43 ± 0.03 and produces 16 ± 4% and 84 ± 4% secondary ozonides and carbonyls, respectively. The methods developed here show how aerosol photoemission can be used to quantify heterogeneous reaction on free nanoparticles.
