Abstract

We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Abstract

58Ni +64Ni is the first case where the influence of positive Q-value transfer channels on sub-barrier fusion was evidenced, in a very well known experiment by Beckerman et al., by comparing with the two systems 58Ni + 58Ni and 64Ni+64Ni. Subsequent measurements on 64Ni + 64Ni showed that fusion hindrance is clearly present in this case. On the other hand, no indication of hindrance can be observed for 58Ni + 64Ni down to the measured level of 0.1 mb. In the present experiment the excitation function has been extended by two orders of magnitude downward. The cross sections for 58Ni + 64Ni continue decreasing very smoothly below the barrier, down to '1 µb. The logarithmic slope of the excitation function increases slowly, showing a tendency to saturate at the lowest energies. No maximum of the astrophysical S -factor is observed. Coupled-channels (CC) calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential and includinginelastic excitations only, underestimate the sub-barrier cross sections by a large amount. Good agreement is found by adding two-neutron transfer couplings to a schematical level. This behaviour is quite different from what already observed for 64Ni+ 64Ni (no positive Q-value transfer channels available), where a clear low-energy maximum of the S -factorappears, and whose excitation function is overestimated by a standard Woods-Saxon CC calculation. No hindrance effect is observed in 58Ni+ 64Ni in the measured energy range. This trend at deep sub-barrier energies reinforces the recent suggestion that the availability of several states following transfer with Q>0, effectively counterbalances the Pauli repulsion that, in general, is predicted to reduce tunneling probability inside the Coulomb barrier.

Abstract

This contribution is focused on the STELLA project (STELlar LAboratory), which aims at the measurement of fusion cross sections between light heavy ions like 12C+12C, 12C+16O or 16O+16O at deep subbarrier energies. The gamma-particle coincidence technique is used in order to reduce background contributions that become dominant for measurements in the nanobarn regime. The experimental setup composed of an ultra high vacuum reaction chamber, a set of 3 silicon strip detectors, up to 36 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators from the UK FATIMA collaboration, and a fast rotating target system will be described. The 12C+12C fusion reaction has been studied from Elab = 11 to 5.6 MeV using STELLA at the Andromède facility in Orsay, France. Preliminary commissioning results are presented in this article.

Abstract

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on $^{20,21}$N are reported. Relativistic $^{20,21}$N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{21}\mathrm{N}$ excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at $T<1$\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance.

6. Improving stellar modeling with new precise nuclear reaction rates determined from nuclear experiment

Abstract

In recent years, new experimental determinations of numerous nuclear reaction rates relevant for astrophysics have been achieved via direct and indirect experimental methods, highlighting specific trends like the unexpected fusion hindrance phenomenon (steep fall of the fusion cross section at very low energies) and multiple resonances. In particular, a precise determination of the nuclear reaction rates is a crucial ingredient in understanding stellar evolution. New nuclear reaction rates have been determined for the different cycles of H-burning, He-burning and C-burning phases by nuclear experiment, leading to significant changes in the nucleosynthesis, with especially consequences on s-process elements abundances. In order to improve stellar modelling, we now need to take into account these new results that can bring one of the key to understand stellar evolution and especially the chemically peculiar stars. In particular, new direct measurements for the C12+C12 nuclear reaction have been obtained at very low energies by the STELLA collaboration in France (Fruet et al. 2020) and open the way to improvements in stellar evolution modelling. This reaction is indeed the main nuclear reaction during the advanced C-burning phase of massive stars (> 8Msol) and can drive important changes in the lifetime of this phase and in the resulting abundances, impacting later stages of the evolution. Monpribat et al. 2022 showed these new rates impact the burning lifetime as well as the production of C-burning products and s-process elements. Using the stellar evolution codes GENEC and STAREVOL, we computed new models for a larger range of mass and metallicity, and including rotation-induced mixing. We confirm previous preliminary results and highlight increased impact due to rotation as well as the dependence on the stellar mass/metallicity for the production of s-elements and final stages of stars (Dumont et al. 2023, A&A in prep.)

8. A new 12C + 12C nuclear reaction rate: Impact on stellar evolution

Abstract

Context. By changing the internal composition of stars, nuclear reactions play a key role in their evolution and spur their contribution to the chemical evolution of galaxies. The STELLA collaboration recently carried out new direct measurements of the 12C + 12C fusion cross section one of the key reactions occurring in C-burning regions in massive stars. Using a coincidence technique, accurate measurements were obtained for many different energies, with the lowest energy explored according to the Gamow window for massive stars. Aims. This work presents new 12C + 12C reaction rates in the form of numerical tables with associated uncertainty estimations, as well as analytical formulae that can be directly implemented into stellar evolution codes. We also describe the impact of these new rates on C-burning in stars. Methods. We determined reaction rates for two cross section extrapolation models: one based on the fusion-hindrance phenomenon and the other on fusion-hindrance plus a resonance. We then compared our results to prior data. Using the GENEC stellar evolution code, we study how these new rates impact the C-burning phases in two sets of stellar models for stars with 12M and 25M initial masses, which were chosen to be highly representative of the diversity of massive stars. Results. The effective temperatures of C-burning in both sets of stellar models are entirely covered by the sensitivity of the present experimental data and no extrapolation of the rates is required. Although the rates may differ by more than an order of magnitude for temperatures typical of C-burning, the impacts on the stellar structures during that phase remain modest. This is a consequence of the readjustment of the stellar structure to a change of nuclear reaction rate for reactions that are shown to be important for energy production. Abstract

The cyclotron C70XP is an accelerator built for the production of non-conventional radionuclides for nuclear medicine, research in physics, radio-chemistry and biology. Its injection section has been designed for 4 types of ions (HH⁺, D-, He2+ H⁻), 3 types of ions reach the end of the beamline (H⁺, He2+ D⁺) at the maximum energy of 70 MeV (H⁻ He2+). It is important that regular and standard runs provide similar beam features with a good emittance quality. An investigation, focused on the beam in the injection, cover beam measurements and potential beam geometry constraints. The beam transverse characteristics in the injection line has been studied with an Allison-type emittance meter and a simple instrumented collimator installed inside the injection line *. With these 2 devices, it is scrutinized how the beam emittance evolves as a function of settings of the injection magnets and the source parameters **. Dependencies found between the emittance, beam hotspots and tunings are discussed, as well as the protection performed by the collimator. Abstract

The 70 MeV cyclotron group of the Arronax GIP (Interest Public Group), France, foresees to increase its beam intensity on target. For this, several beam studies are being performed in the various sections of the accelerator including the injection. Thus, an Allison-type emittance-meter has been installed in this section above the cyclotron and downstream a quadrupole triplet. Installation and the first results of a campaign of measurements are presented including high intensity runs, up to 1 mA for 40 keV H⁻ ions. The emittance-meter is expected to be used with several accelerators throughout the world. 11. Koordinationspolymere aus 3d-Übergangsmetallhalogeniden mit Cyanopyridinen : Synthese, Analytik und Kristallstrukturbestimmung aus Röntgenpulverdaten

Abstract

Die Synthese und Charakterisierung von neuartigen metallorganischen Koordinationsverbindungen hat in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten einen wahren Aufschwung erlebt. Aufgrund ihrer außerordentlichen strukturellen Vielfalt eröffnen sich zahlreiche Anwendungsmöglichkeiten über alle naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Domänen hinweg. Daher besteht ein allgemeines Interesse nicht nur in der Entwicklung neuer Verbindungen und Untersuchungen von Struktur-Eigenschafts-Beziehungen, sondern auch in einer Verbesserung ihrer Darstellungsmethoden. Diese Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit Koordinationspolymeren und -netzwerken, die aus zweiwertigen 3d-Übergangsmetallhalogeniden (MX2, wie bspw. MnCl2 oder FeBr2) und Pyridin (py) bzw. Pyridinderivaten (CNpy, wie bspw. 3-Cyanopyridin) aufgebaut sind. Die Darstellung der Koordinationsverbindungen erfolgte in erster Linie über gewöhnliche Kristallisationsexperimente in alkoholischer Lösung, bei denen Phasen der Stöchiometrie [MX2(CNpy)4] oder [MX2(CNpy)2]n anfielen. Diese wurden anschließend systematisch erhitzt (“getempert“), was in der Regel zu einer stufenweisen und irreversiblen Abgabe eines Teils der Liganden führte, also bspw. von [MX2(CNpy)2]n zu [MX2(CNpy)1]n. Für diesen sog. „thermischen Abbau“ hat sich die Verwendung eines DTA-TG-Gerätes bewährt. Da die Zielverbindungen als mikrokristalline Pulver anfielen, erfolgte die Bestimmung ihrer Kristallstrukturen auf Basis von Röntgenpulverdaten. Insgesamt wurden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit 41 neue Phasen synthetisiert und deren Kristallstrukturen aus Röntgenpulverdaten bestimmt. Zusammenfassend ist für die verschiedenen Pyridinderivate folgendes zu konstatieren: 3-Cyanopyridin Im Falle der MBr2-Serie wurden für M = Mn, Fe, Co und Ni Koordinationsverbindungen der Stöchiometrie [MBr2(3-CNpy)4] erhalten, deren Kristallstrukturen aus diskreten Komplexmolekülen bestehen. Abstract

The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed (p,2p) quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the state of 16,18,20C. The experimental findings support the notion of a moderate reduction of the proton spin-orbit splitting, at variance to recent claims for a prevalent magic number towards the neutron dripline.

Abstract

The quasi-free scattering reactions 11C(p, 2p) and 10,11,12C(p, pn) have been studied in inverse kinematics at beam energies of 300–400 MeV/u at the R3B-LAND setup. The outgoing proton-proton and protonneutron pairs were detected in coincidence with the reaction fragments in kinematically complete measurements. The efficiency to detect these pairs has been obtained from GEANT4 simulations which were tested using the 12C(p, 2p) and 12C(p, pn) reactions. Experimental cross sections and momentum distributions have been obtained and compared to DWIA calculations based on eikonal theory. The new results reported here are combined with previously published cross sections for quasi-free scattering from oxygen and nitrogen isotopes and together they enable a systematic study of the reduction of singleparticle strength compared to predictions of the shell model over a wide neutron-to-proton asymmetry range. The combined reduction factors show a weak or no dependence on isospin asymmetry, in contrast to the strong dependency reported in nucleon-removal reactions induced by nuclear targets at lower energies. However, the reduction factors for (p, 2p) are found to be ’significantly smaller than for (p, pn) reactions for all investigated nuclei.

Abstract

58Ni +64Ni is the first case where the influence of positive Q-value transfer channels on sub-barrier fusion was evidenced, in a very well known experiment by Beckerman et al., by comparing with the two systems 58Ni + 58Ni and 64Ni+64Ni. Subsequent measurements on 64Ni + 64Ni showed that fusion hindrance is clearly present in this case. On the other hand, no indication of hindrance can be observed for 58Ni + 64Ni down to the measured level of 0.1 mb. In the present experiment the excitation function has been extended by two orders of magnitude downward. The cross sections for 58Ni + 64Ni continue decreasing very smoothly below the barrier, down to '1 µb. The logarithmic slope of the excitation function increases slowly, showing a tendency to saturate at the lowest energies. No maximum of the astrophysical S -factor is observed. Coupled-channels (CC) calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential and includinginelastic excitations only, underestimate the sub-barrier cross sections by a large amount. Good agreement is found by adding two-neutron transfer couplings to a schematical level. This behaviour is quite different from what already observed for 64Ni+ 64Ni (no positive Q-value transfer channels available), where a clear low-energy maximum of the S -factorappears, and whose excitation function is overestimated by a standard Woods-Saxon CC calculation. No hindrance effect is observed in 58Ni+ 64Ni in the measured energy range. This trend at deep sub-barrier energies reinforces the recent suggestion that the availability of several states following transfer with Q>0, effectively counterbalances the Pauli repulsion that, in general, is predicted to reduce tunneling probability inside the Coulomb barrier. Abstract

Quasifree one-proton knockout reactions have been employed in inverse kinematics for a systematic study of the structure of stable and exotic oxygen isotopes at the R3B/LAND setup with incident beam energies in the range of 300–450 MeV/u. The oxygen isotopic chain offers a large variation of separation energies that allows for a quantitative understanding of single-particle strength with changing isospin asymmetry. Quasifree knockout reactions provide a complementary approach to intermediate-energy one-nucleon removal reactions. Inclusive cross sections for quasifree knockout reactions of the type AO(p,2p)A−1N have been determined and compared to calculations based on the eikonal reaction theory. The reduction factors for the single-particle strength with respect to the independent-particle model were obtained and compared to state-of-the-art ab initio predictions. The results do not show any significant dependence on proton-neutron asymmetry.

Abstract

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. Tento článek je kritickým posouzením předsudku, který stále nedotčeně přetrvává při četbě novely 'Die Judenbuche' Anetty von Droste-Hülshoff. Ve většině interpretací tohoto textu je Friedrich Mergel rozpoznán a analyzován jako vrah. Předložený rozbor ukazuje, že novela obsahuje značný počet rozporuplných prvků, které nedovolují Friedrichovo odsouzení. Proto by mělo být cílem četby zamyšlení, které je v textu obsaženo, a ne rozsudek. This paper represents a critical approach towards a prejudice upheld nearly untouched in readings of Anette von Droste-Hülshoff's novella 'Die Judenbuche': In most interpretations Friedrich Mergel has been putatively labelled a murderer and is still analysed accordingly. This analysis therefore attempts to make it clear that the novella contains a significant number of contradictory elements that are incompatible with Mergel’s guilt. The author thus suggests placing a stronger emphasis on reflectional knowledge rather than on the conviction itself.
