1. A new 12C+12C reaction rate: Impact on stellar evolution

Abstract: Among the reactions driving stellar evolution during carbon burning, 12C + 12C fusion provides the key ingredients. This system reveals many resonances, but also regions with suppressed fusion cross-sections. The reaction was recently measured by the STELLA collaboration utilizing the gammaparticle coincidence technique for precise cross-section measurements reaching down to the Gamow window of massive stars. From the experimental data, reaction rates were determined by approximating a hindrance parametrization and by adding on top a resonance at the lowest measured energy. The impact of these reaction rates on the evolution of massive stars was explored with models of 12 and 25 M⊙ using the stellar evolution code GENEC, and a detailed study of the resulting nucleosynthesis with a 1454 elements network was performed. The sensitivity of the STELLA experimental cross-sections on the temperature range for C-burning for the stellar models studied were presented. The final abundances and their impacts on stellar evolution were discussed.

Abstract: Nuclear reactions drive the stellar evolution and contribute to the stellar and galactic chemicals abundances. New determinations of the nuclear reaction rates for key fusion reactions of stellar evolution are now available, paving the way to improved stellar model predictions. We explore the impact of new C12+C12 reaction rates for massive stars evolution, structure, and nucleosynthesis during core carbon-burning phase. We analyse the consequences for stars of different masses including rotation-induced mixing. We computed a grid of massive stars at solar metallicity using the stellar evolution code GENEC. We explored the results using three different references for the rates, with or without rotation. We study the effect in terms of evolution, structure, and critical mass limit between intermediate and massive stars. We explored the consequences for nucleosynthesis during the core C-burning phase by means of a one-zone nucleosynthesis code. We confirm the significant impact of using the recent nuclear reaction rates following the hindrance hypothesis as well as the mass-dependent effect of a resonance at 2.14 MeV. This impacts the characteristics of the core of stars from the C-ignition and during all the core C-burning phase. The change of rates modifies the central nucleosynthesis during the core C-burning phase, resulting in an underproduction of s-process elements. The correct and accurate determination of the nuclear reaction rates, with especially the existence and location of resonances, impacts stellar evolution in many aspects affecting the model predictions. The choice of the nuclear reaction rates reference for the C12+C12 fusion reaction changes significantly the behaviour of the core during the C-burning phase. Abstract: We present 12C+12C direct fusion measurements with STELLA UKFATIMA, that reach into the region of astrophysics interest relevant to massive stars (M⊙ ≈ 25) using self-supporting thin rotating carbon foils [1]. We demonstrate that detecting gammas and light charged particles in coincidence with nanosecond timing is key for effective background reduction achieving reliable measurements in the sub-nanobarn range. We give details about core developments of the detection apparatus as well as the coincidence-analysis procedure of low count statistics. The present data largely follows the phenomenological hindrance interpolation and shows indication for resonant behaviour at the lowest energy explored.

4. Challenges in low losses and large acceptance ion beam transport

Abstract: A prototype of ion beam transport module has been developed at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) and used as a test bed to investigate key issues related to the efficient transport of ion beams. This includes the reduction of the beam losses, the increase of the acceptance, and the definition of the instrumentation necessary to evaluate the performances. An experiment was performed on a full-scale beam line and following a standard beam analysis, steering, and focusing procedure. After a review of the developments carried out for some demanding facilities and for the design of the quadrupoles implemented in the transport module, the paper highlights the challenge of measuring the preservation of transverse phase-space distributions with large acceptance conditions, i.e. with the highest ratio of beam filling to quadrupole aperture. Abstract: Due to increasing environmental and economic constraints, optimization of ion beam transport and equipment design becomes essential. The future should be equipped with planet-friendly facilities, that is, solutions that reduce environmental impact and improve economic competitiveness. The tendency to increase the intensity of the current and the power of the beams obliges us and brings us to new challenges. Installations tend to have larger dimensions with increased areas, volumes, weights and costs. A new ion beam transport prototype was developed and used as a test bed to identify key issues to reduce beam losses and preserve transverse phase-space distributions with large acceptance conditions.

6. Transverse emittance measurement in 2D and 4D performed on a Low Energy Beam Transport line: benchmarking and data analysis

Abstract: 2D and 4D transverse phase-space of a low-energy ion-beam is measured with two of the most common emittance scanners. The article covers the description of the installation, the setup, the settings, the experiment and the benchmark of the two emittance meters. We compare the results from three series of measurements and present the advantages and drawbacks of the two systems. Coupling between phase-space planes, correlations and mitigation of deleterious effects are discussed. The influence of background noise and aberrations of trace-space figures on emittance measurements and RMS calculations is highlighted, especially for low density beams and halos. A new data analysis method using noise reduction, filtering, and reconstruction of the emittance figure is described. Finally, some basic concepts of phase-space theory and application to beam transport are recalled.

Abstract: Carbon burning plays a crucial role in stellar evolution, where this reaction is an important route for the production of heavier elements. A particle-γ coincidence technique that minimizes the backgrounds to which this reaction is subject and provides reliable cross sections has been used at the Argonne National Laboratory to measure fusion cross-sections at deep sub-barrier energies in the 12C+12C system. The corresponding excitation function has been extracted down to a cross section of about 6 nb. This indicates the existence of a broad S-factor maximum for this system. Experimental results are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The fusion excitation function for the positive-Q-value system 12C+30Si (Qfus = +14.1 MeV) has been measured in inverse kinematics down to the μb level and compared with standard coupled-channel calculations. The appearance of the fusion hindrance phenomenon and the evidence of a S-factor maximum have been observed. This result can be significant to extrapolate the behavior of lighter astrophysical relevant systems at deep sub-barrier energies, where existing experimental data are still contradicting and affected by large errors.

For background suppression the γ-particle coincidence technique is used. In this project, LaBr3 detectors from the UK FATIMA (FAst TIMing Array) collaboration are combined with annular silicon strip detectors customized at IPHC-CNRS, Strasbourg, and the setup is located at Andromède, IPN, Orsay. The commissioning of the experimental approach as well as a sub-barrier 12C +12C → 24Mg∗ cross section measurement campaign are carried out.

12. A new $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C nuclear reaction rate: impact on stellar evolution

Abstract: This work presents new $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C reaction rates in the form of numerical tables with associated uncertainty estimation, as well as analytical formulae that can be directly implemented into stellar evolution codes. This article further describes the impact of these new rates on C-burning in stars. We determine reaction rates for two cross-section extrapolation models: one based on the fusion-hindrance phenomenon, and the other on fusion-hindrance plus a resonance, and compare our results to previous data. Using the GENEC stellar evolution code, we study how these new rates impact the C-burning phases in two sets of stellar models for stars with 12 M$_{\odot}$ and 25 M$_{\odot}$ initial masses chosen to be highly representative of the diversity of massive stars. The effective temperatures of C-burning in both sets of stellar models are entirely covered by the sensitivity of the present experimental data, and no extrapolation of the rates is required. Although, the rates may differ by more than an order of magnitude for temperatures typical of C-burning, the impacts on the stellar structures during that phase remain modest. This is a consequence of the readjustment of the stellar structure to a change of nuclear reaction rate for reactions important for energy production. For the hindrance case, the C-burning phase is found to occur at central temperatures 10\% higher than with the hindrance plus resonance rate. Its C-burning lifetime is reduced by a factor of two. This model, nevertheless, loses more entropy than the other one thus enters earlier into the degeneracy regime which will impact the last stages of the evolution at the pre-core collapse time. The hindrance model produces up to 60% more neon. The impact of the different rates on the s-process occurring during the C-burning phase is modest, changing final abundances of s-processed elements by at most 20% (cobalt)., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F->15O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including gamma decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the ratio of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The experimental findings support the notion of a moderate reduction of the proton 1p1/2−1p3/2 spin-orbit splitting, at variance to recent claims for a prevalent Z=6 magic number towards the neutron dripline.

Abstract: The emission of neutron pairs from the neutron-rich $N\!=\!12$ isotones $^{18}$C and $^{20}$O has been studied by high-energy nucleon knockout from $^{19}$N and $^{21}$O secondary beams, populating unbound states of the two isotones up to 15~MeV above their two-neutron emission thresholds. The analysis of triple fragment-$n$-$n$ correlations shows that the decay $^{19}$N$(-1p)^{18}$C$^*\!\rightarrow^{16}$C+$n$+$n$ is clearly dominated by direct pair emission. The two-neutron correlation strength, the largest ever observed, suggests the predominance of a $^{14}$C core surrounded by four valence neutrons arranged in strongly correlated pairs. On the other hand, a significant competition of a sequential branch is found in the decay $^{21}$O$(-1n)^{20}$O$^*\!\rightarrow^{18}$O+$n$+$n$, attributed to its formation through the knockout of a deeply-bound neutron that breaks the $^{16}$O core and reduces the number of pairs., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract: The STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) experimental station for the measurement of deep sub-barrier light heavy-ion fusion cross sections has been installed at the Androm\`{e}de accelerator at the Institut de Physique Nucl\'{e}aire, Orsay (France). The setup is designed for the direct experimental determination of heavy-ion fusion cross sections as low as tens of picobarn. The detection concept is based on the coincident measurement of emitted gamma rays with the UK FATIMA (FAst TIMing Array) and evaporated charged particles using a silicon detector array. Key developments relevant to reaching the extreme sub-barrier fusion region are a rotating target mechanism to sustain beam intensities above 10$\mu$A, an ultra-high vacuum to prevent carbon built-up and gamma charged-particle timing in the order of nanoseconds sufficient to separate proton and alpha particles., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Background: Odd-odd nuclei, around doubly closed shells, have been extensively used to study proton-neutron interactions. However, the evolution of these interactions as a function of the binding energy, ultimately when nuclei become unbound, is poorly known. The $^{26}$F nucleus, composed of a deeply bound $\pi0d\_{5/2}$ proton and an unbound $\nu0d\_{3/2}$ neutron on top of an $^{24}$O core, is particularly adapted for this purpose. The coupling of this proton and neutron results in a $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1 - 4^{+}\_1$ multiplet, whose energies must be determined to study the influence of the proximity of the continuum on the corresponding proton-neutron interaction. The $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1, 2^{+}\_1,4^{+}\_1$ bound states have been determined, and only a clear identification of the $J^{\pi} =3^{+}\_1$ is missing.Purpose: We wish to complete the study of the $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1 - 4^{+}\_1$ multiplet in $^{26}$F, by studying the energy and width of the $J^{\pi} =3^{+}\_1$ unbound state. The method was firstly validated by the study of unbound states in $^{25}$F, for which resonances were already observed in a previous experiment.Method: Radioactive beams of $^{26}$Ne and $^{27}$Ne, produced at about $440A$\,MeV by the FRagment Separator at the GSI facility, were used to populate unbound states in $^{25}$F and $^{26}$F via one-proton knockout reactions on a CH$\_2$ target, located at the object focal point of the R$^3$B/LAND setup. The detection of emitted $\gamma$-rays and neutrons, added to the reconstruction of the momentum vector of the $A-1$ nuclei, allowed the determination of the energy of three unbound states in $^{25}$F and two in $^{26}$F. Results: Based on its width and decay properties, the first unbound state in $^{25}$F is proposed to be a $J^{\pi} = 1/2^-$ arising from a $p\_{1/2}$ proton-hole state. In $^{26}$F, the first resonance at 323(33)~keV is proposed to be the $J^{\pi} =3^{+}\_1$ member of the $J^{\pi} = 1^{+}\_1 - 4^{+}\_1$ multiplet. Energies of observed states in $^{25,26}$F have been compared to calculations using the independent-particle shell model, a phenomenological shell-model, and the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group method.Conclusions: The deduced effective proton-neutron interaction is weakened by about 30-40\% in comparison to the models, pointing to the need of implementing the role of the continuum in theoretical descriptions, or to a wrong determination of the atomic mass of $^{26}$F., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, submitted to PRC

Abstract: With the R$^{3}$B-LAND setup at GSI we have measured exclusive relative-energy spectra of the Coulomb dissociation of $^{18}$C at a projectile energy around 425~AMeV on a lead target, which are needed to determine the radiative neutron-capture cross sections of $^{17}$C into the ground state of $^{18}$C. Those data have been used to constrain theoretical calculations for transitions populating excited states in $^{18}$C. This allowed to derive the astrophysical cross section $\sigma^{*}_{\mathrm{n}\gamma}$ accounting for the thermal population of $^{17}$C target states in astrophysical scenarios. The experimentally verified capture rate is significantly lower than those of previously obtained Hauser-Feshbach estimations at temperatures $T_{9}\leq{}1$~GK. Network simulations with updated neutron-capture rates and hydrodynamics according to the neutrino-driven wind model as well as the neutron-star merger scenario reveal no pronounced influence of neutron capture of $^{17}$C on the production of second- and third-peak elements in contrast to earlier sensitivity studies.

Abstract: Background: Models describing nuclear fragmentation and fragmentation-fission deliver important input for planning nuclear physics experiments and future radioactive ion beam facilities. These models are usually benchmarked against data from stable beam experiments. In the future, two-step fragmentation reactions with exotic nuclei as stepping stones are a promising tool to reach the most neutron-rich nuclei, creating a need for models to describe also these reactions. Purpose: We want to extend the presently available data on fragmentation reactions towards the light exotic region on the nuclear chart. Furthermore, we want to improve the understanding of projectile fragmentation especially for unstable isotopes. Method: We have measured projectile fragments from 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes colliding with a carbon target. These measurements were all performed within one experiment, which gives rise to a very consistent dataset. We compare our data to model calculations. Results: One-proton removal cross sections with different final neutron numbers (1pxn) for relativistic 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes impinging on a carbon target. Comparing model calculations to the data, we find that EPAX is not able to describe the data satisfactorily. Using ABRABLA07 on the other hand, we find that the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon needs to be decreased from 27 MeV to 8.1 MeV. With that decrease ABRABLA07 describes the data surprisingly well. Conclusions: Extending the available data towards light unstable nuclei with a consistent set of new data have allowed for a systematic investigation of the role of the excitation energy induced in projectile fragmentation. Most striking is the apparent mass dependence of the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon. Nevertheless, this parameter, which has been related to final-state interactions, requires further study.

Abstract: With the experimental station STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) we will measure fusion cross sections of astrophysical relevance making use of the coincident detection of charged particles and gamma rays for background reduction. For the measurement of gamma rays from the de-excitation of fusion products a compact array of 36 UK FATIMA LaBr₃ detectors is designed based on efficiency studies with Geant4. The photo peak efficiency in the region of interest compares to other gamma detection systems used in this field. The features of the internal decay of ¹³⁸La is used in a background study to obtain an online calibration of the gamma detectors. Background data are fit to the Monte Carlo model of the self activity assuming crude exponential behavior of external background. Accuracy in the region of interest is of the order of some keV in this first study.

Abstract: Interest in many strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal oxide insulators stems from mapping their electronic structures to a J=1/2 Mott phase. One of the hopes is to establish their Mott parent states and explore these systems' potential of realizing novel electronic states upon carrier doping. However, once doped, little is understood regarding the role of their reduced Coulomb interaction U relative to their strongly correlated 3d-electron cousins. Here we show that, upon hole-doping a candidate J=1/2 Mott insulator, carriers remain localized within a nanoscale phase separated ground state. A percolative metal-insulator transition occurs with interplay between localized and itinerant regions, stabilizing an antiferromagnetic metallic phase beyond the critical region. Our results demonstrate a surprising parallel between doped 5d- and 3d-electron Mott systems and suggest either through the near degeneracy of nearby electronic phases or direct carrier localization that U is essential to the carrier response of this doped spin-orbit Mott insulator., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures in main text, 4 figures in supplemental text

Abstract: The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. Abstract: The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes 25O and 26O are investigated experimentally and theoret- ically. In this first R3B-LAND experiment, the unbound states are populated at GSI via proton- knockout reactions from 26F and 27F at relativistic energies around 450 MeV/nucleon. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into 24O plus one or two neutrons, the 25O ground- state energy and lifetime are determined, and upper limits for the 26O ground state are extracted. In addition, the results provide evidence for an excited state in 26O at around 4 MeV. The ex- perimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

Abstract: The gamma-decay of the anti-analog of the giant dipole resonance (AGDR) has been measured to the isobaric analog state excited in the p(124Sn,n) reaction at a beam energy of 600 MeV/nucleon. The energy of the transition was also calculated with state-of-the-art self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) and turned out to be very sensitive to the neutron-skin thickness (\DeltaR_(pn)). By comparing the theoretical results with the measured one, the \DeltaR_(pn) value for 124Sn was deduced to be 0.175 \pm 0.048 fm, which agrees well with the previous results. The energy of the AGDR measured previously for ^(208)Pb was also used to determine the \DeltaR_(pn) for ^(208)Pb. In this way a very precise \DeltaR_(pn) = 0.181 \pm 0.031 neutron-skin thickness has been obtained for 208Pb. The present method offers new possibilities for measuring the neutron-skin thicknesses of very exotic isotopes., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The population of isomeric states in the prompt decay of fission fragments-so-called isomeric yield ratios (IYRs)-is known to be sensitive to the angular momentum J that the fragment emerged with, and may therefore contain valuable information on the mechanism behind the fission process. In this work, we investigate how changes in the fissioning system impact the measured IYRs of fission fragments to learn more about what parameters affect angular momentum generation. To enable this, a new technique for measuring IYRs is first demonstrated. It is based on the time of arrival of discrete gamma rays, and has the advantage that it enables the study of the IYR as a function of properties of the partner nucleus. This technique is used to extract the IYR of 134Te, strongly populated in actinide fission, from the three different fissioning systems: 232Th(n, f), 238U(n, f), at two different neutron energies, as well as 252Cf(sf). The impacts of changing the fissioning system, the compound nuclear excitation energy, the minimum J of the binary partner, and the number of neutrons emitted on the IYR of 134Te are determined. The decay code TALYS is used in combination with the fission simulation code FREYA to calculate the primary fragment angular momentum from the IYR. We find that the IYR of 134Te has a slope of 0.004 +/- 0.002 with increase in compound nucleus (CN) mass. When investigating the impact on the IYR of increased CN excitation energy, we find no change with an energy increase similar to the difference between thermal and fast fission. By varying the mass of the partner fragment emerging with 134Te, it is revealed that the IYR of 134Te is independent of the total amount of prompt neutrons emitted from the fragment pair. This indicates that neutrons carry minimal angular momentum away from the fission fragments. Comparisons with the FREYA+TALYS simulations reveal that the average angular momentum in 134Te following 238U(n, f) is 6.0 h over bar . This is not consiste

Abstract: Immunotherapies are already successfully used for cancer treatment. Both approaches have the aim to recruit T cells to kill the malignant cells carrying a tumor associated antigen (TAA) on their surface. In the first case, UniCAR modified T cells are linked via a TAA specific target module (TM) to cancer cells. In the case of the UniMAB system, natural T cells are recruited to cancer cells via a TAA specific TM and a bsAb based effector module (EM) which binds to CD3 of T cells and to an epitope tag of the TM. In both cases, an immune complex is formed leading to T cell activation and tumor cell elimination. Most importantly, the T cell activation is dependent on the cross-linkage of T cells and tumor cells via the TM or TM/EM complex. Thus, T cell activation is steerable which increases the safety of these approaches. With the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) leading to millions of deaths worldwide, we aimed to apply the UniCAR and UniMAB technology against SARS-CoV-2 and virus infected cells as novel immunotherapeutic treatment approach. For this purpose, we designed two TMs binding to the receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2. The first TM is based on a single chain fragment variable (scFv) with specificity for RBD, whereas the second one contains the extracellular domain of the human ACE2 receptor which is the entry receptor of SARS-CoV-2. Both TMs were able to efficiently recruit either UniCAR T cells or, in combination with the EM of the UniMAB system, natural T cells to efficiently kill human cells having the RBD of SARS-CoV-2 on their surface. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 led to millions of infections and deaths worldwide. As this virus evolves rapidly, there is a high need for treatment options, which can win the race against new emerging variants of concern. Here, we describe a novel immunotherapeutic drug based on the SARS-CoV-2 entry receptor ACE2 and provide experimental evidence that it cannot only be used for (i) neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro and in SARS-CoV-2 infected animal models, but also for (ii) clearance of virus infected cells. For the latter purpose, we equipped the ACE2 decoy with an epitope tag. Thereby, we converted it to an adapter molecule which we successfully applied in the modular platforms UniMAB and UniCAR for retargeting of either unmodified or universal chimeric antigen receptor modified immune effector cells. Our results pave the way for a clinical application of this novel ACE2 decoy, which will clearly improve COVID-19 treatment.

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a pandemic with millions of infections and deaths worldwide and devastating impact on global economy. Up to now, vaccines and monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapies lack to provide a long-lasting protection against rapidly evolving new emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. Thus, novel therapeutic options are pressingly needed especially for immunocompromised patients and/or patients with high risk for developing a severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In that regard, we developed a novel immunotherapeutic drug based on the SARS-CoV-2 entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). This ACE2 decoy potently binds to the SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD), neutralizes SARS-CoV-2 as well as the Delta and Omicron variant and protects hamsters from a SARS-CoV-2 infection. To additionally use this ACE2 decoy for elimination of virus infected cells, we equipped it with an epitope tag. Thus, it can be applied as adapter molecule in the modular platform technologies UniMAB and UniCAR, which already demonstrated great success in the setting of malignant diseases. As adapter molecule the ACE2 decoy is able to efficiently recruit either universal chimeric antigen receptor (UniCAR) modified T cells or, in combination with an anti-peptide epitope-anti-CD3 bispecific Ab of the UniMAB system, unmodified T cells to efficiently kill SARS-CoV-2 RBD expressing human cells. Taken together, the ACE2 decoy represents a very promising immunotherapeutic drug for both SARS-CoV-2 variant neutralization and infected cell killing via the UniMAB and UniCAR system and might, therefore, clearly improve the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Abstract: A prototype of ion beam transport module has been developed at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) and used as a test bed to investigate key issues related to the efficient transport of ion beams. This includes the reduction of the beam losses, the increase of the acceptance, and the definition of the instrumentation necessary to evaluate the performances. An experiment was performed on a full-scale beam line and following a standard beam analysis, steering, and focusing procedure. After a review of the developments carried out for some demanding facilities and for the design of the quadrupoles implemented in the transport module, the paper highlights the challenge of measuring the preservation of transverse phase-space distributions with large acceptance conditions, i.e. with the highest ratio of beam filling to quadrupole aperture. Abstract: Objectives: Cardiac rehabilitation–programs comprehensively delivering outpatient secondary prevention–is under-available and under-studied in the resource-poor settings where it is needed most. This report summarizes the governance, participating sites, patient characteristics and outcomes, as well as knowledge translation activities during first year of operation of ICCPR’s registry, namely the International Cardiac Rehab Registry. Methods: A pilot study was undertaken with five centers, demonstrating feasibility, satisfaction with the on-boarding processes, as well as data quality. Results: Fourteen centers have been engaged from all regions but Europe; Data have been entered on >1000 patients (18.1% female; mean age = 57.6), of whom 62.4% completed their programs and 19.9% dropped out for work or clinical reasons. Post-program, completers had significantly better work status, functional capacity, medication adherence, physical activity levels, diet, as well as lower tobacco use than non-completers (all p < 0.05). A site Certification program was developed and piloted, with five centers now recognized for their quality, given they met over 70% of the 13 internationally agreed standards based on Registry data and a virtual site assessment. Conclusion: Annual assessments have started. Quality improvement activities will soon be underway. We continue to invite new programs, supporting development in resource-poor settings to the benefit of patients served.

Abstract: Carbon burning is a key step in the evolution of massive stars, Type 1a supernovae and superbursts in x-ray binary systems. Determining the C12+C12 fusion cross section at relevant energies by extrapolation of direct measurements is challenging due to resonances at and below the Coulomb barrier. A study of the Mg24(α,α′)Mg24 reaction has identified several 0+ states in Mg24, close to the C12+C12 threshold, which predominantly decay to Ne20(ground state)+α. These states were not observed in Ne20(α,α0)Ne20 resonance scattering suggesting that they may have a dominant C12+C12 cluster structure. Given the very low angular momentum associated with sub-barrier fusion, these states may play a decisive role in C12+C12 fusion in analogy to the Hoyle state in helium burning. We present estimates of updated C12+C12 fusion reaction rates.

Abstract: Among the reactions driving stellar evolution during carbon burning, 12C + 12C fusion provides the key ingredients. This system reveals many resonances, but also regions with suppressed fusion cross-sections. The reaction was recently measured by the STELLA collaboration utilizing the gammaparticle coincidence technique for precise cross-section measurements reaching down to the Gamow window of massive stars. From the experimental data, reaction rates were determined by approximating a hindrance parametrization and by adding on top a resonance at the lowest measured energy. The impact of these reaction rates on the evolution of massive stars was explored with models of 12 and 25 M⊙ using the stellar evolution code GENEC, and a detailed study of the resulting nucleosynthesis with a 1454 elements network was performed. The sensitivity of the STELLA experimental cross-sections on the temperature range for C-burning for the stellar models studied were presented.
