Search

XTE J1739-302 is a transient X-ray source with unusually short outbursts, lasting on the order of hours. Here we give a summary of X-ray observations we have made of this object in outburst with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and at a low level of activity with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, as well as observations made by other groups. Visible and infrared spectroscopy of the mass donor of XTE J1739-302 are presented in a companion paper. The X-ray spectrum is hard both at low levels and in outburst, but somewhat variable, and there is strong variability in the absorption column from one outburst to another. Although no pulsation has been observed, the outburst data from multiple observatories show a characteristic timescale for variability on the order of 1500-2000 s. The Chandra localization (right ascension 17h 39m 11.58s, declination -30o 20' 37.6'', J2000) shows that despite being located less than 2 degrees from the Galactic Center and highly absorbed, XTE J1739-302 is actually a foreground object with a bright optical counterpart. The combination of a very short outburst timescale and a supergiant companion is shared with several other recently-discovered systems, forming a class we designate as Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs). We present the analysis of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the turn-on phase of a 35 day cycle of the X-ray binary Her X-1. During the early phases of the turn-on, the energy spectrum is composed of X-rays scattered into the line of sight plus heavily absorbed X-rays. The energy spectra in the 3-17 keV range can be described by a partial covering model, where one of the components is influenced by photoelectric absorption and Thomson scattering in cold material plus an iron emission line at 6.5 keV. In this paper we show the evolution of spectral parameters as well as the evolution of the pulse profile during the turn-on. We describe this evolution using Monte Carlo simulations which self-consistently describe the evolution of the X-ray pulse profile and of the energy spectrum., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present observations of the High Mass X-ray Binary GX 301-2 taken during the Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) with Integral following our RXTE observations (Kreykenbohm et al. 2004). The optical companion of GX 301-2 is the B1Ia+ hypergiant Wray 977 with a luminosity of 1.3 x 10^6 Lsun and a mass of ~48 Msun making the system one of the most massive X-ray binaries known. The system was observed 24 times during the GPS thus covering many orbital phases including the pre-periastron flare. The source is clearly detected in all Integral instruments in most pointings. The derived X-ray light curves show strong variability on all timescales. Depending on the orbital phase of the pointings, the luminosity changes by factor of more than 10 during the pre-periastron flare compared to other pointings. Furthermore, broad band spectra using all instruments available on Integral are compared with data taken by the RXTE instruments PCA and HEXTE (using the same data as in Kreykenbohm et al. 2004)., Comment: accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 5th Integral Workshop (The INTEGRAL Universe, Munich, 16-20 February 2004)

We present XMM-Newton observations of the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A0538-66, situated in the Large Magellanic Cloud, in the quiescent state. Despite a very low luminosity state of (5-8)E33 ergs/s in the range 0.3-10 keV, the source is clearly detected up to ~8 keV. and can be fitted using either a power law with photon index alpha=1.9+-0.3 or a bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT=3.9+3.9-1.7 keV. The spectral analysis confirms that the off-state spectrum is hard without requiring any soft component, contrary to the majority of neutron stars observed in quiescence up to now., Comment: Accepted for proceedings of 5th INTEGRAL Workshop

A great deal of emphasis on timing in the RXTE era has been on pushing toward higher and higher frequency phenomena, particularly kHz QPOs. However, the large areas of the RXTE pointed instruments provide another capability which is key for the understanding of accreting X-ray pulsars -- the ability to accumulate high quality spectra in a limited observing time. For the accreting X-ray pulsars, with their relatively modest spin frequencies, this translates into an ability to study broad band spectra as a function of pulse phase. This is a critical tool, as pulsar spectra are strong functions of the geometry of the "accretion mound" and the observers' viewing angle to the ~10^12 G magnetic field. In particular, the appearance of "cyclotron lines" is sensitively dependent on the viewing geometry, which must change with the rotation of the star. These spectral features, seen in only a handful of objects, are quite important, as they give us our only direct measure of neutron star magnetic fields. Furthermore, they carry a great deal of information as to the geometry and physical conditions in the accretion mound. In this paper, we review the status of cyclotron line studies with the RXTE. We have analyzed the long pointed observations of the Z sources in the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) public archive to study the high energy emission in those sources. Our analysis is concentrated on the High Energy X--Ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) waveband, since we are primarily interested in studying the hard X-ray (i.e., E > 20 keV) production in those sources. We give here the preliminary results of this ongoing study. We have found no hard X-ray tails (besides Sco X-1) in our database from any of the Z sources, i.e., GX 349+2 (< 7.9 x 10^-5 photons cm^-2 s^-1, 3 sigma, 50-150 keV), Cyg X-2 (< 8.4 x 10^-5 photons cm^-2 s^-1, 3 sigma, 50-150 keV), GX 17+2 (< 4.2 x 10^-5 photons cm^-2 s^-1, 3 sigma, 50-150 keV), GX 5-1 (< 2.1 x 10^-5 photons cm^-2 s^-1, 3 sigma, 50-150 keV), and Gx 340+0 (< 6.0 x 10^-5 photons cm^-2 s^-1, 3 sigma, 50-150 keV). From the point of view of HEXTE/RXTE observations shown here, the production of hard X-ray tails in Z sources is a process triggered when special conditions are fulfilled. One of these conditions, as derived from our analysis, is a threshold of ~ 4 x 10^36 erg s^-1 for the luminosity of the source's thermal component., Comment: LaTeX, 4 pages, all styles included. We have discovered extended X-ray emission from the microquasar Cyg X-3 in archival Chandra X-ray Observatory observations. A 5" wide structure lies approximately 16" to the NE from the core point source and may be extended in that direction. This angular scale corresponds to a physical extent of roughly 0.8 lyr, at a distance of 2.5 lyr from Cyg X-3 (assuming a 10 kpc distance). The flux varied by a factor of 2.5 during the four months separating two of the observations, indicating significant substructure. The peak 2-10 keV luminosity was about 5e34 ergs/s. There may also be weaker, extended emission of similar scale oppositely directed from the core, suggesting a bipolar outflow. This structure is not part of the dust scattering halo, nor is it caused by the Chandra point spread function. We describe the ``Monitor e Imageador de Raios-X'' (MIRAX), an X-ray astronomy satellite mission proposed by the high energy astrophysics group at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil to the Brazilian Space Agency. MIRAX is an international collaboration that includes, besides INPE, the University of California San Diego, the University of Tuebingen in Germany, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Space Research Organization Netherlands. The payload of MIRAX will consist in two identical hard X-ray cameras (10 -200 keV) and one soft X-ray camera (2-28 keV), both with angular resolution of ~ 5-6 arcmin. The basic objective of MIRAX is to carry out continuous broadband imaging spectroscopy observations of a large source sample (~ 9 months/yr) in the central Galactic plane region. This will allow the detection, localization, possible identification, and spectral/temporal study of the entire history of transient phenomena to be carried out in one single mission. MIRAX will have sensitivities of ~ 5 mCrab/day in the 2-10 keV band (~2 times better than the All Sky Monitor on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer) and 2.6 mCrab/day in the 10-100 keV band (~40 times better than the Earth Occultation technique of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory). We present revised infrared (2.2 micron) astrometry of the field containing the Galactic microquasar GRS 1758-258, using observations at the Keck I 10-m telescope. We find three candidates for the microquasar within a 3 sigma error circle, but none within 2 sigma. We show that if the 18.4 day X-ray period of GRS 1758-258 is due to a binary orbit, then only one of the three candidates, an early K-type giant, is large enough to power the microquasar via Roche lobe overflow. We therefore identify this star as the infrared counterpart of GRS 1758-258, which we classify as a low mass X-ray binary. Long term infrared monitoring of this source should provide further information about the microquasar system, including a confirmation of the X-ray period and an estimate of the compact object's mass., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present pulse phase-resolved X-ray spectra of the high mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We observed Vela X-1 in 1998 and 2000 with a total observation time of ~90 ksec. We find an absorption feature at 23.3 +1.3 -0.6 kev in the main pulse, that we interpret as the fundamental cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF). The feature is deepest in the rise of the main pulse where it has a width of 7.6 +4.4 -2.2 kev and an optical depth of 0.33 +0.06 -0.13. This CRSF is also clearly detected in the secondary pulse, but it is far less significant or undetected during the pulse minima. We conclude that the well known CRSF at 50.9 +0.6 -0.7 kev, which is clearly visible even in phase-averaged spectra, is the first harmonic and not the fundamental. Five years of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the Galactic black-hole candidates 1E 1740.7-2942 and GRS 1758-258 show a periodic modulation with amplitude 3-4% in each source at 12.73 +/- 0.05 dy and 18.45 +/- 0.10 dy, respectively. We interpret the modulations as orbital, suggesting that the objects have red-giant companions. Combining the RXTE data with earlier data (Zhang, Harmon & Liang 1997) from the Burst and Transient Source Experiment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, we find a long period or quasi-period of about 600 dy in 1E 1740.7-2942, and a suggestion of a similar 600-dy period in GRS 1758-258. These timescales are longer than any yet found for either precessing systems like Her X-1 and SS 433 or binaries like LMC X-3 and Cyg X-1 with more irregular long periods., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We observed the "micro-quasar" GRS 1758-258 four times with Chandra. Two HRC-I observations were made in 2000 September-October spanning an intermediate-to-hard spectral transition (identified with RXTE). Another HRC-I and an ACIS/HETG observation were made in 2001 March following a hard-to-soft transition to a very low flux state. Based on the three HRC images and the HETG zero order image, the accurate position (J2000) of the X-ray source is RA = 18h 01m 12.39s, Dec = -25d 44m 36.1s (90% confidence radius = 0".45), consistent with the purported variable radio counterpart. All three HRC images are consistent with GRS 1758-258 being a point source, indicating that any bright jet is less than ~1 light-month in projected length, assuming a distance of 8.5 kpc., Comment: 4 pages, including 3 figures. Using a consistent set of models, we parameterized the X-ray spectra of all accreting pulsars in the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer database which exhibit Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Features (CRSFs, or cyclotron lines). These sources in our sample are Her X-1, 4U 0115+63, Cen X-3, 4U 1626-67, XTE J1946-274, Vela X-1, 4U 1907+09, 4U 1538-52, GX 301-2, and 4U 0352+309 (X Per). We searched for correlations among the spectral parameters, concentrating on how the cyclotron line energy relates to the continuum and therefore how the neutron star B-field influences the X-Ray emission. As expected, we found a correlation between the CRSF energy and the spectral cutoff energy. However, with our consistent set of fits we found that the relationship is more complex than what has been reported previously. Also, we found that not only does the width of the cyclotron line correlate with the energy (as suggested by theory), but that the width scaled by the energy correlates with the depth of the feature. We discuss the implications of these results, including the possibility that accretion directly affects the relative alignment of the neutron star spin and dipole axes. The X-ray binary pulsar Her X-1 shows a wide variety of long and short term variabilities in the X-ray light curve. The 35 d variability of the source is interpreted as the influence of a warped, inclined, and twisted accretion disk periodically covering the line of sight to the central neutron star. In 1997 September we observed the ``turn-on'' of a 35 d cycle with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Spectral analysis reveals that during early phases of the turn-on the overall spectrum is composed of X-rays scattered into the line of sight plus heavily absorbed X-rays. This interpretation is consistent with the variation of the pulse profile observed at the same time. The overall shape of the pulse profile is not changing, but towards earlier phases of the turn-on the pulse signature is steadily ``washed out''. This behavior can be understood as an influence of scattering and absorption due to the presence of the accretion disk rim. Using a Monte Carlo code we simulate the influence of both processes on a time variable, beamed emission characteristic, similar to the pulse profile of Her X-1. We present the long term evolution of the timing properties of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 in the 0.002-128 Hz frequency range as monitored from 1998 to 2001 with the RXTE. The hard state power spectral density (PSD) is well modeled as the sum of four Lorentzians, which describe distinct broad noise components. Before 1998 July, Cyg X-1 was in a "quiet" hard state characterized primarily by the first three of these broad Lorentzians. Around 1998 May, this behavior changed: the total fractional rms amplitude decreased, the peak frequencies of the Lorentzians increased, the average time lag slightly increased, and the X-ray spectrum softened. The change in the timing parameters is mainly due to a strong decrease in the amplitude of the third Lorentzian. Since then, an unusually large number of X-ray flares have been observed. During these "failed state transitions", the X-ray power spectrum changes to that of the intermediate state. Modeling this PSD with the four Lorentzians, we find that the first Lorentzian component is suppressed relative to the second and third Lorentzian. Also the frequency-dependent time lags increase significantly. We confirm the interpretation as failed state transitions with observations from the 2001 Jan. and 2001 Oct. soft states. Such behavior suggests that some or all of the Lorentzian components are associated with the accretion disk corona. Observations of the transient accreting pulsar XTE J1946+274 made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the course of the 1998 September-November outburst, reveal a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (or "cyclotron line") in the hard X-ray spectrum near 35 keV. We determine a centroid energy of 36.2 +0.5/-0.7 keV, which implies a magnetic field strength of 3.1(1+z)x10^12 G, where z is the gravitational redshift of the scattering region. The optical depth, Tau = 0.33 +0.07/-0.06, and width, sigma = 3.37 +0.92/-0.75 keV, are typical of known cyclotron lines in other pulsars. This discovery makes XTE J1946+274 one of thirteen pulsars with securely detected cyclotron lines resulting in direct magnetic field measurements., Comment: Five pages including four postscript figures and two tables. Five observations of the hard X-ray spectrum of Her X-1 from \xte show that the $\sim 41$ keV energy of the cyclotron scattering line is constant within statistics of a few percent per observtion. Comparison with other observations over many years indicates strongly that the centroid energy of this absorption line has increased some time between 1991 and 1993 by 23%, from 34 keV to 41 keV. Moreover, the cutoff energy of the spectral continuum increased at the same time from 16 keV to 20 keV, which is, within the statistical error of 5%, in direct proportion to the centroid. This may be a sign thatboth these characteristics of the spectrum are controlled in the same way by the magnetic field strength in the region of scattering., Comment: 30 page, 5 figures

We report RXTE results of spectral analyses of three (Sco X-1, GX 349+2, and Cyg X-2) out of the 6 known Z sources, with emphasis in the hard X-ray emission. No hard X-ray tails were found for Cyg X-2 (< 8.4E-5 photons cm**-2 s**-1, 50-100 keV, 3 sigma) and for GX 349+2 (< 7.9E-5 photons cm**-2 s**-1, 50-100 keV, 3 sigma). For Sco X-1 a variable hard X-ray tail (with an average flux of 2.0E-3 photons cm**-2 s**-1, 50-100 keV) has already been reported. We compare our results to reported detections of a hard component in the spectrum of Cyg X-2 and GX 349+2. We report on the analysis from ~110 ks of X-ray observations of Centaurus A carried out with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and the High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) instruments on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during three monitoring campaigns over the last 4 years (10 ks in 1996, 74 ks in 1998, and 25 ks in 2000). The joint PCA/HEXTE X-ray spectrum can be well described by a heavily absorbed power law with photon index 1.8 and a narrow iron line due to fluorescence of cold matter. The measured column depth decreased by about 30% between 1996 and 2000, while the detected 2-10 keV continuum flux remained constant between 1996 and 1998, but increased by 60% in 2000. Since in all three observations the iron line flux did not vary, a corresponding decrease in equivalent width was noted. No appreciable evidence for a reflection continuum in the spectrum was detected. We present the interpretation of the iron line strength through Monte Carlo computations of various geometries. Near the end of 2001 February, the black-hole candidate (BHC) GRS 1758-258 made an abrupt transition from a standard hard (low) state to a soft state. Unlike Cyg X-1 and other BHCs, whose luminosity increases during this transition, GRS 1758-258 was dimmer after the transition. We present observations with the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and interpret the phenomenon in the context of a ``dynamical'' soft state model. Using this model we predicted that mass transfer from the companion had ceased, and that the luminosity should decay on a timescale of a few weeks. The most recent data support this prediction, being consistent with a decay time of 34 dy. We discuss the results of long-term hard x-ray monitoring of Galactic black-hole candidates 1E 1740.7-2942, GRS 1758-258, Cyg X-1, GX 339-4, and Cyg X-3 with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The objects divide into two classes. In the first class, exemplified by Cyg X-1, luminosity and spectral hardness evolve simultaneously. In the second class, the relation is more complicated: the softest spectra occur while the count rate is dropping. Most models of accretion, tailored to Cyg X-1, do not predict the second sort of behavior. One interpretation is a simple model with two simultaneous, independent accretion flows: a thin disk and a hot halo. A drop in the accretion rate affecting both flows would propagate through the halo immediately but might take up to several weeks to propagate through the disk. While the inner halo is thus temporarily depleted compared to the disk, a temporary soft state is expected. This picture is supported by the observation that those sources which show delays (1E 1740.7-2942, GRS 1758-258, and GX 339-4) are expected to have low-mass companions, and those which do not (Cyg X-1, Cyg X-3) are known or thought to have high-mass companions. Low-mass companions imply accretion by Roche-lobe overflow, with a high specific angular momentum in the accreting material, and therefore a large disk with a long viscous timescale. Wind accretion from massive companions is expected to result in a much smaller disk, and thus little viscous delay., Comment: 37 pages, 17 figures, 1 table. Using the HEXTE experiment on-board the RXTE satellite, we performed a search for hard X-ray tails in Sco X-1 spectra. We found strong evidence for the presence of such a non-thermal component on several occasions. Using the PCA/RXTE we were able to track the position of the source along the Z diagram, and we observed that the presence of the hard X-ray tail is not confined to a particular region. However, we found a correlation between the power law index of the non-thermal component and the position of the source in the Z diagram, suggesting that the hard X-ray spectrum (i.e., E > 50 keV) becomes flatter as the mass accretion rate increases. We were also able to study the temporal variation of the appearance/absence of the hard X-ray component. We have discovered a ~29 keV Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature (CRSF) in the X-Ray spectrum of 4U 0352+309 (X Per) using observations taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. 4U 0352+309 is a persistent low luminosity (L_x = 4.2x10^34 ergs/s) X-ray pulsar, with a 837 s period and which accretes material from the Be star X Per. The X-Ray spectrum, unusual when compared to brighter accreting pulsars, may be due to the low mass accretion rate and could be typical of the new class of persistent low luminosity Be/X-Ray binary pulsars. We attempted spectral fits with continuum models used historically for 4U 0352+309, and found that all were improved by the addition of a CRSF at ~29 keV. The model that best fit the observations is a combination of a 1.45+/-0.02 keV blackbody with a 5.4x10^8 cm^2 area, and a power-law with a 1.83+/-0.03 photon index modified by the CRSF. In these fits the CRSF energy is 28.6+1.5-1.7 keV, implying a magnetic field strength of 2.5(1+z)x10^12 G in the scattering region (where z is the gravitational redshift). We report the detection of a non-thermal hard X-ray component from Sco X-1 based upon the analysis of 20-220 keV spectra obtained with the HEXTE experiment on-board the RXTE satellite. We find that the addition of a power-law component to a thermal bremsstrahlung model is required to achieve a good fit in 5 of 16 observations analyzed. Using PCA data we were able to track the movement of the source along the Z diagram, and we found that the presence of the hard X-ray tail is not confined to a specific Z position. However, we do observe an indication that the power law index hardens with increasing mass accretion rate, as indicated from the position on the Z diagram. We present temporal and spectral results from monitoring Cygnus X-1 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 1998 and 1999. We concentrate on the long term evolution of the hard state timing properties, comparing it to the 1996 soft state evolution. This leads to the following results: 1. the hard and soft state time lag spectra are very similar, 2. during state transitions, the lags in the 1-10 Hz range increase by more than an order of magnitude, 3. in the hard state itself, flaring events can be seen --- the temporal and spectral evolution during the flare of 1998 July identifies it as a ``failed state transition''. During (failed) state transitions, the time lag spectra and the power spectra change predominantly in the 1-10 Hz range. We present results from 170ksec long RXTE observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3, taken in 1996 December, where their spectra can be described by a disc black body plus an additional soft (Gamma~2.8) high-energy power-law (detected up to 50keV in LMC X-3). These observations, as well as archival ASCA observations, constrain any narrow Fe line present in the spectra to have an equivalent width <90eV, broad lines (~150eV EW, \sigma ~ 1keV) are permitted. We also study the variability of LMC X-1. Its X-ray power spectral density (PSD) is approximately f^{-1} between 10^{-3} and 0.3Hz with a rms variability of ~7%. Above 5keV the PSD shows evidence of a break at f > 0.2Hz, possibly indicating an outer disc radius of ~1000GM/c^2 in this likely wind-fed system. Furthermore, the coherence function between variability in the > 5keV band and variablity in the lower energy bands is extremely low. We present the analysis of an RXTE monitoring campaign of the canonical soft state black hole candidates LMC X-1 and LMC X-3. In contrast to LMC X-1, which does not exhibit any periodic spectral changes, we find that LMC X-3 exhibits stron spectral variability on time scales of days to weeks. For typical RXTE ASM count rates, the luminosity variations of LMC X-3 are due to changes of the phenomenological disk blackbody temperature. During episodes of especially low luminosity (ASM count rates < 0.6 counts/sec), kT strongly decreases and the power law significantly hardens to a photon index of ~1.8. These changes are consistent with state changes of LMC X-3 from the soft state to the canonical hard state of galactic black hole candidates. We argue that the long term variability of LMC X-3 might be due to a wind-driven limit cycle such as discussed by Shields et al. In this paper, we summarize the RXTE measurements of cyclotron resonance scattering features in 8 accreting pulsars. The wide bandpass and modest resolution of the RXTE instruments make them ideal for measuring these generally broad features. In particular, the high energy response of HEXTE provides a window for discovery of new lines not detectable with proportional counters such as Ginga or the PCA alone., Comment: 5 pages. We report phase resolved spectroscopy of the transient accreting pulsar, 4U0115+63. For the first time, more than two cylotron resonance scattering features are detected in the spectrum of an X-ray pulsar. The shape of the fundamental line appears to be complex, and this is in agreement with predictions of Monte-Carlo models. As in other pulsars, the line energies and optical depths are strong functions of pulse phase. We report first observational results of multifrequency campaigns on the prominent Virgo blazars 3C 273 and 3C 279 which were carried out in January and February 1999. Both blazars are detected from radio to gamma-ray energies. We present the long term evolution of the frequency-dependent X-ray time lags of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 as measured in 1996 and 1998 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Lag spectra measured during the 1996 June soft state are very similar to those seen during 1996 December and most of 1998 while Cyg~X-1 was in its hard state. During state transitions, however, the shape and magnitude of the X-ray lag is highly variable and tends to be much larger than outside of the state transitions. This behavior is most obvious in the 1--10 Hz band. The increase of the X-ray lag during the state transitions might be related to the formation and destruction of the synchrotron radiation emitting outflows present during the hard state., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, A&A Let., in press

A failed main-on in the 35d cycle of Her X-1 was observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) on 1999 April 26. Exceptions to the normal 35d cycle have been seen only twice before; in 1983 and again 1993. We present timing and spectral results of this latest Anomalous Low State (ALS) along with comparisons to the main-on and normal low states. Pulsations were observed in the 3-18 keV band with a fractional RMS variation of (0.037+-0.003). Spectral analysis indicates that the ALS spectrum has the same shape as the main-on but is modified by heavy absorption and scattering. We find that 70% of the observed emission has passed through a cold absorber (N_H=5.0x10^{23}cm^{-2}). This partially absorbing spectral fit can be applied to the normal low state with similar results. We find that the ALS observations may be interpreted as a decrease in inclination of the accretion disk causing the central X-Ray source to be obscured over the entire 35d cycle., Comment: revised text, 6 revised figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from a 20 h RXTE observation of Vela X-1, ncluding a peculiar low state of a few hours duration, during which the pulsation of the X-ray emission ceased, while significant non-pulsed emission remained. This ``quiescent state'' was preceded by a ``normal state'' without any unusual signs and followed by a ``high state'' of several hours of increased activity with strong, flaring pulsations. while there is clear spectral evolution from the normal state to the low state, the spectra of the following high state are surprisingly similar to those of the low state., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Proceedings of the 5th Compton Symposium, AIP, in press

We present first results from the spectral and temporal analysis of an RXTE monitoring campaign of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 in 1999. The timing properties of this hard state black hole show considerable variability, even though the state does not change. This has previously been noted for the power spectral density, but is probably even more pronounced for the time lags. From an analysis of four monitoring observations of Cyg X-1, separated by 2 weeks from each other, we find that a shortening of the time lags is associated with a hardening of the X-ray spectrum, as well as with a longer characteristic ``shot time scale''. The black hole candidate LMC X-3 varies by a factor of four in the soft X-rays on a timescale of 200 or 100days. We have monitored LMC X-3 with RXTE in three to four week intervals starting in December 1996, obtaining a large observational database that sheds light on the nature of the long term X-ray variability in this source. We report on long-term observations of the Galactic-bulge black hole candidates 1E 1740.7-2942 and GRS 1758-258 with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. 1E 1740.7-2942 has been observed 77 times and GRS 1758-258 has been observed 82 times over the past 1000 days. The flux of each object has varied by no more than a factor of 2.5 during this period, and the indices of the energy spectra have varied by no more than 0.4. The power spectra are similar to other black-hole candidates: flat-topped noise, breaking to a power law. Each object has exhibited a brightening that lasted for several months, and we have a found a time lag between the photon power-law index and the count rate. In both sources, the spectrum is softest during the decline from the brightening. This behavior can be understood in the context of thin-disk and advection-dominated accretion flows coexisting over a wide range of radii, with the implication that both sources have low-mass companions and accrete via Roche-lobe overflow., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We have discovered a third harmonic cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) in observations of the recent outburst of 4U 0115+63 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The spectrum in a narrow pulse phase range shows CRSFs at 12.40+0.65/-0.35, 21.45+0.25/-0.38, and 33.56+0.70/-0.90 keV. With centroid energy ratios to the fundamental of 1.73+/-0.08 and 2.71+/-0.13, the CRSFs are not harmonically spaced. Strong variability of the continuum and CRSFs with pulse phase indicate a complex emission geometry near the neutron star polar cap. In addition, one RXTE observation, which spanned periastron passage, revealed a strong 2 mHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO). This is slower by two orders of magnitude than the beat-frequency QPO expected in this system and slower by a factor of more than 5 compared with other QPOs seen in accreting X-ray pulsars., Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. 4 pages, 5 figures. We present results from four observations of the accreting X-ray pulsar Vela X-1 with RXTE in 1996 February. The light curves show strong pulse to pulse variations, while the average pulse profiles are quite stable, similar to previous results. Below 5keV the pulse profiles display a complex, 5-peaked structure with a transition to a simple, double peak above about 15keV. We analyze phase-averaged, phase-resolved, and on-pulse minus off-pulse spectra. The best spectral fits were obtained using continuum models with a smooth high-energy turnover. In contrast, the commonly used power law with exponential cutoff introduced artificial features in the fit residuals. Using a power law with a Fermi-Dirac cutoff modified by photoelectric absorption and an iron line, the best fit spectra are still unacceptable. We interpret large deviations around 25 and 55keV as fundamental and second harmonic cyclotron absorption lines. If this result holds true, the ratio of the line energies seems to be larger than 2. Of all known persistent stellar-mass black hole candidates, only LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 consistently show spectra that are dominated by a soft, thermal component. We present results from long (170ksec) Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 made in 1996 December. The spectra can be described by a multicolor disk blackbody plus an additional high-energy power-law. Even though the spectra are very soft (Gamma is about 2.5), RXTE detected a significant signal from LMC X-3 up to energies of 50keV, the hardest energy at which the object was ever detected. Focusing on LMC X-3, we present results from the first year of an ongoing monitoring campaign with RXTE which started in 1997 January. We show that the appearance of the object changes considerably over its ~200d long cycle. The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer made a short (10 ks) observation of the radio galaxy Centaurus A on 14 August 1996. Analysis of the combined 2.5-240 keV spectrum has revealed a heavily absorbed(NH=9.42+/-0.24 e22 cm-2) primary power law (index=1.86+/-0.015) and an iron line due to fluorescence of cold matter (EW=162+/-25 eV). Flux from either a jet, primary flux scattered into the line of sight, or primary flux seen through a partial absorber was not required. The iron line width is unresolved at the 95% confidence level (sigma < 0.54 keV). No significant variability in the iron line flux is seen from measurements over the last two decades, while the overall continuum flux varied by more than a factor of four, which implies that the line emission region is distant from that of the primary emission. While radio-quiet Seyfert galaxies exhibit spectral components attributable to Compton reflection from cold matter, Cen A reveals no such component (exposed solid angle ratio < 0.09). We report on the X-ray spectrum of the 401 Hz X-ray pulsar and type I burst source SAX J1808.4-3658, during its 1998 April/May hard outburst. The observations were made with RXTE over a period of three weeks. The spectrum is well-described by a power law with photon index 1.86+/-0.01 that is exponentially cut off at high energies. Excess soft emission above the power law is present as well as a weak Fe-K line. This is the first truly simultaneous broad-band (2.5-250 keV) spectrum of a type I burst source in the hard state. The spectrum is consistent with other hard state burster spectra which cover either only the soft (1-20 keV) or hard (>20 keV) bands, or cover both, but not simultaneously. The cut-off power law resembles black hole candidates (BHCs) in their low states, observed with RXTE. We compare the SAX J1808.4-3658 spectrum to three BHCs and find that the power law is somewhat softer. We report on the discovery of a new pulsating X-ray source during Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of a low galactic latitude field centered at RA (J2000) = 19 hr 05 m 43 s and Dec (J2000) = +08 deg 58 arcmin 48 arcsec. Significant pulsations were detected by both the PCA and HEXTE instruments aboard RXTE at a fundamental period of 89.17 +/- 0.02 seconds, with higher harmonics also visible in the 2-10 keV power spectrum. The folded lightcurve from the source is multiply peaked at lower energies, and changes to single peaked morphology above ~20 keV. The phase averaged spectrum from the source is well fit by strongly absorbed power law or thermal bremsstrahlung spectral models of photon index 1.9 +/- 0.1 or temperature 19.5 +/- 4.6 keV, respectively. The mean neutral hydrogen column density is approximately 10^23 cm^-2, suggesting a distance of >10 kpc to the source and a minimum 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity of 2*10^{35} ergs s^{-1}. By comparison with other pulsars with similar periods and luminosities, we suggest that XTE J1906+09 has a supergiant companion with an underfilled Roche lobe. A new x-ray transient, designated XTE J1739-302, was discovered with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in data from 12 August 1997. Although it was the brightest source in the Galactic Center region while active (about 3.0 x 10^-9 ergs/cm2/s from 2 to 25 keV), it was only observed on that one day; it was not detectable nine days earlier or two days later. There is no known counterpart at other wavelengths, and its proximity to the Galactic Center will make such an identification difficult due to source confusion and extinction. The High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) is one of three scientific instruments aboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), which was launched on December 30, 1995. RXTE performs timing and spectral studies of bright x-ray sources to determine the physical parameters of these systems. The HEXTE consists of two independent clusters of detectors, each cluster containing four NaI(Tl)/CsI(Na) phoswich scintillation counters sharing a common 1 degree FWHM field of view. The field of view of each cluster is switched on- and off-source to provide near real-time background measurements. The net open area of the eight detectors is 1600 cm2, and each detector covers the energy range 15-250 keV with an average energy resolution of 15.4% at 60 keV. The in-flight performance of the HEXTE is described, the light curve and spectrum of the Crab Nebula/Pulsar is given, and the 15-240 keV spectrum of the weak source, active galaxy MCG 8-11-11 is presented to demonstrate the weak source spectral capabilities of HEXTE., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, accepted by Ap. We present the results of observations of the PSR B1509$-$58/MSH 15$-$52 system in X-rays ($2-250$ keV) by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The spectra of the peak of the pulsed component (radio phase $0.17-0.53$) is fit by a power law of photon index $1.36\pm0.01$, with no evidence of a high energy spectral break seen up to $\sim200$ keV. For the off-pulse spectral component, the spectrum from $2-250$ keV is fit by a power law of photon index $2.215\pm0.005$. An iron emission line at 6.7 keV with an equivalent width of 129 eV improves the fit, but only at a marginal significance. Thermal bremsstrahlung and Raymond-Smith models produce much worse fits to the unpulsed data. The lack of a high energy spectral break in the pulsed emission implies an efficiency of $\geq 3%$ in the conversion of pulsar spindown energy to pulsed X-rays in the system., Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, 18 pages, 4 postscript figures

We present the 2-60 keV spectrum of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A measured using the Proportional Counter Array and the High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite. In addition to the previously reported strong emission-line features produced by thermal plasmas, the broad-band spectrum has a high-energy "tail" that extends to energies at least as high as 120 keV. This tail may be described by a broken power law that has photon indices of 1.8 +0.5/-0.6 and 3.04 +0.15/-0.13 and a break energy of 15.9 +0.3/-0.4 keV. We argue that the high-energy component, which dominates the spectrum above about 10 keV, is produced by synchrotron radiation from electrons that have energies up to at least 40 TeV. We present the results from RXTE observations of a new X-ray transient, GRS 1737-31, near the Galactic center during an outburst. Over a span of two weeks, the source was seen to vary significantly on time scales down to a few seconds. The rapid flares in the light curves bear resemblance to those observed for Cygnus X-1, a well-known black hole candidate (BHC). The power-density spectrum is also very typical of BHCs in the HARD (or LOW) state: it is flat below a characteristic break frequency of ~0.03 Hz, and becomes roughly a 1/f power law above. The observed X-ray spectrum can be characterized by a simple power law with a photon index of ~1.7 over a broad energy range 2-200 keV, which is remarkably similar to that of Cyg X-1 in the HARD state. The similarities to Cyg X-1 make GRS 1737-31 a likely BHC. However, unlike most transient BHCs, GRS 1737-31 does not seem to reach a ``soft state'' even during an outburst. We discuss this phenomenon in light of the comparison to a class of hard X--ray BHCs including transients GRO J0422+32, V404Cyg and GRO J1719-24, and persistent sources 1E1740.7-2942 and GRS 1758-258., Comment: 12 pages, including 4 figures. We reported previously that for Cyg X-1 there is a settling period following the transition from hard to soft state (astro-ph/9610071). During the transiton, The low energy spectrum (below ~10 keV) varies significantly from observation to observation while the high energy portion changes little. The source reaches nominal soft-state brightness during the settling period. It can be characterized by a soft low-energy spectrum and significant low-frequency 1/f noise and white noise on the power density spectrum (PDS). The low-energy spectrum becomes even softer, and the PDS is completely dominated by the 1/f noise, when the ``true'' soft state is reached. In this paper, subsequent RXTE observations of Cyg X-1 in the soft state are examined, and the results confirm our earlier conclusions. Furthermore, we show the results from observations taken during a soft-to-hard transition. As expected, the white noise appears again, and accordingly, the 1/f noise becomes less dominant, similar to the settling period at the end of the hard-to-soft transition. The low-frequency 1/f noise has not been observed when Cyg X-1 is in the hard state. Therefore, it seems to be positively correlated with the disk mass accretion rate which is low in the hard state and high in the soft state. The difference in the observed spectral and timing properties between the hard and soft states is qualitatively consistent with a simple ``fluctuating corona'' model (astro-ph/9610071). We present the results from the RXTE observations of Cygnus X-1 in its high state. In the energy range of 2-200 keV, the observed X-ray spectrum can be described by a model consisting of a soft blackbody component and a broken power-law with a high energy cutoff. The low energy spectrum (below about 11 keV) varies significantly from observation to observation while the high energy portion changes little. The X-ray flux varies on all timescales down to milliseconds. The power density spectrum (PDS) can be characterized by excess red noise (``1/f'') at low frequencies and a white noise component that extends to 1-3 Hz before being cut off. At higher frequencies, the PDS becomes power-law again, with a slope of roughly -2 (i.e., ``1/f^2''). Broad peaks in the range of 3-9 Hz are present, and might be due to quasi-periodic oscillations. The PDS shows interesting spectral dependence: the 1/f component becomes more prominent when the low-energy spectrum becomes softer.
