Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay is one of the most sensitive probes for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. One of the isotopes under investigation is $^{136}$Xe, which would double beta decay into $^{136}$Ba. Detecting the single $^{136}$Ba daughter provides a sort of ultimate tool in the discrimination against backgrounds. Previous work demonstrated the ability to perform single atom imaging of Ba atoms in a single-vacancy site of a solid xenon matrix. In this paper, the effort to identify signal from individual barium atoms is extended to Ba atoms in a hexa-vacancy site in the matrix and is achieved despite increased photobleaching in this site. Abrupt fluorescence turn-off of a single Ba atom is also observed. Significant recovery of fluorescence signal lost through photobleaching is demonstrated upon annealing of Ba deposits in the Xe ice. Following annealing, it is observed that Ba atoms in the hexa-vacancy site exhibit antibleaching while Ba atoms in the tetra-vacancy site exhibit bleaching. This may be evidence for a matrix site transfer upon laser excitation. Abstract

Purpose: Elevated blood pressure induces electrocardiographic changes and is associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease later in life compared to normal blood pressure levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between normal to high normal blood pressure values (90–139/50–89 mmHg) and electrocardiographic parameters related to cardiac changes in hypertension in healthy young adults. Methods: Data from 1449 volunteers aged 18–30 years collected at our centre were analyzed. Only subjects considered healthy by a physician after review of collected data with systolic blood pressure values between 90 and 139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure values between 50 and 89 mmHg were included. Subjects were divided into groups with 10 mmHg systolic blood pressure increment between groups for analysis of electrocardiographic differences. Backward multivariate regression analysis with systolic and diastolic blood pressure as a continuous variable was performed. Results: The mean age was 22.7 ± 3.0 years, 73.7% were male. P-wave area, ventricular activation time, QRS-duration, Sokolow–Lyon voltages, Cornell Product, J-point–T-peak duration corrected for heart rate and maximum T-wave duration were significantly different between systolic blood pressure groups. Abstract

Electron-neutrino charged-current interactions with xenon nuclei were modeled in the nEXO neutrinoless double-beta decay detector (~5-tonne, 90% ${}^{136}$Xe, 10% ${}^{134}$Xe) to evaluate its sensitivity to supernova neutrinos. Predictions for event rates and detectable signatures were modeled using the MARLEY event generator. We find good agreement between MARLEY's predictions and existing theoretical calculations of the inclusive cross sections at supernova neutrino energies. The interactions modeled by MARLEY were simulated within the nEXO simulation framework and were run through an example reconstruction algorithm to determine the detector's efficiency for reconstructing these events. The simulated data, incorporating the detector response, were used to study the ability of nEXO to reconstruct the incident electron-neutrino spectrum and these results were extended to a larger xenon detector of the same isotope enrichment. We estimate that nEXO will be able to observe electron-neutrino interactions with xenon from supernovae as far as 5 to 8 kpc from earth, while the ability to reconstruct incident electron-neutrino spectrum parameters from observed interactions in nEXO is limited to closer supernovae., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

Large-scale low-background detectors are increasingly used in rare-event searches as experimental collaborations push for enhanced sensitivity. However, building such detectors, in practice, creates an abundance of radioassay data especially during the conceptual phase of an experiment when hundreds of materials are screened for radiopurity. A tool is needed to manage and make use of the radioassay screening data to quantitatively assess detector design options. We have developed a Materials Database Application for the nEXO experiment to serve this purpose. This paper describes this database, explains how it functions, and discusses how it streamlines the design of the experiment.

Abstract

Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu \beta \beta$), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0$\nu \beta \beta$ of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is $\leq$1\% energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value ($2458.07\pm 0.31$~keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value for the nEXO design.

Abstract

We study a possible calibration technique for the nEXO experiment using a $^{127}$Xe electron capture source. nEXO is a next-generation search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) that will use a 5-tonne, monolithic liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The xenon, used both as source and detection medium, will be enriched to 90% in $^{136}$Xe. To optimize the event reconstruction and energy resolution, calibrations are needed to map the position- and time-dependent detector response. The 36.3 day half-life of $^{127}$Xe and its small $Q$-value compared to that of $^{136}$Xe $0\nu\beta\beta$ would allow a small activity to be maintained continuously in the detector during normal operations without introducing additional backgrounds, thereby enabling in-situ calibration and monitoring of the detector response. In this work we describe a process for producing the source and preliminary experimental tests. Abstract

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by erythematous papulosquamous lesions in sebum rich areas such as the face and scalp. Its pathogenesis appears multifactorial with a disbalanced immune system, Malassezia driven microbial involvement and skin barrier perturbations. Microbial involvement has been well described in SD, but skin barrier involvement remains to be properly elucidated. To determine whether barrier impairment is a critical factor of inflammation in SD alongside microbial dysbiosis, a cross‐sectional study was performed in 37 patients with mild‐to‐moderate facial SD. Their lesional and non‐lesional skin was comprehensively and non‐invasively assessed with standardized 2D‐photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), microbial profiling including Malassezia species identification, functional skin barrier assessments and ceramide profiling. The presence of inflammation was established through significant increases in erythema, epidermal thickness, vascularization and superficial roughness in lesional skin compared to non‐lesional skin. Lesional skin showed a perturbed skin barrier with an underlying skewed ceramide subclass composition, impaired chain elongation and increased chain unsaturation. Changes in ceramide composition correlated with barrier impairment indicating interdependency of the functional barrier and ceramide composition. Lesional skin showed significantly increased Staphylococcus and decreased Cutibacterium abundances but similar Malassezia abundances and mycobial composition compared to non‐lesional skin. Principal component analysis highlighted barrier properties as main discriminating features. To conclude, SD is associated with skin barrier dysfunction and changes in the ceramide composition. No significant differences in the abundance of Malassezia were observed. Restoring the cutaneous barrier might be a valid therapeutic approach in the treatment of facial SD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BACKGROUNDCurrently, therapeutic options for ambulatory COVID-19 patients are limited.OBJECTIVETo evaluate the safety, efficacy and effect of the intramuscular administration of polymerized type I collagen (PTIC) on hyperinflammation, oxygen saturation and symptom improvement in adult outpatients with symptomatic COVID-19.DESIGNDouble-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial of PTIC vs placebo.SETTINGSingle Third-level hospital in Mexico City (Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán)PARTICIPANTSEighty-nine adult participants with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis and symptom onset within the 7 days preceding recruitment were included from August 31, 2020 to November 7, 2020 and followed for 12 weeks. Final date of follow-up was February 4, 2021.INTERVENTIONSPatients were randomly assigned to receive either 1.5 ml of PTIC intramuscularly every 12 h for 3 days and then every 24 h for 4 days (n=45), or matching placebo (n=44).MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURESThe primary outcome was a mean reduction of at least 50% in the level of IP-10 compared to baseline. The secondary outcomes were mean oxygen saturation ≥92% while breathing ambient air and duration of symptoms.RESULTSOf 89 patients who were randomised, 87 (97.8%) were included in an intention-to-treat analysis; 37 (41.6%) were male and mean age was 48.5±14.0 years. The IP-10 levels decreased 75% in the PTIC group and 40% in the placebo group vs baseline. The comparison between treatment vs placebo was also statistically significant (P=0.0047). The IL-8 (44%, P=0.045), M-CSF (25%, P=0.041) and IL-1Ra (36%, P=0.05) levels were also decreased in the PTIC group vs baseline. Mean oxygen saturation ≥92% was achieved by 40/44 (90%), 41/42 (98%) and 40/40 (100%) of participants that received PTIC at 8, 15 and 97 days of follow-up vs 29/43 (67%), 31/39 (80%) and 33/37 (89%) of patients treated with placebo (P=0.001). The unadjusted accelerated failure time model showed that patients treated with PTIC achieved the primary outcome 2.70-fold faster (PPCONCLUSIONSIn this study, treatment with PTIC down-regulated IP-10, IL-8, M-CSF and IL-Ra levels, which could explain the PTIC effect on the higher proportion of patients with mean oxygen saturation readings ≥92% and a shorter duration of symptoms as compared to patients treated with placebo. Abstract

Background: Previous studies reported that hypo‐ and hyperthermia are associated with several atrial and ventricular electrocardiographical parameters, including corrected QT (QTc) interval. Enhanced characterization of variations in QTc interval and normothermic body temperature aids in better understanding the underlying mechanism behind drug induced QTc interval effects. The analysis' objective was to investigate associations between body temperature and electrocardiographical parameters in normothermic healthy volunteers. Methods: Data from 3023 volunteers collected at our center were retrospectively analyzed. Subjects were considered healthy after review of collected data by a physician, including a normal tympanic body temperature (35.5‐37.5°C) and in sinus rhythm. A linear multivariate model with body temperature as a continuous was performed. Another multivariate analysis was performed with only the QT subintervals as independent variables and body temperature as dependent variable. Results: Mean age was 33.8 ± 17.5 years and mean body temperature was 36.6 ± 0.4°C. Body temperature was independently associated with age (standardized coefficient [SC] = −0.255, P <.001), female gender (SC = +0.209, P <.001), heart rate (SC = +0.231, P <.001), P‐wave axis (SC = −0.051, P <.001), J‐point elevation in lead V4 (SC = −0.121, P <.001), and QTcF duration (SC = −0.061, P =.002). In contrast, other atrial and atrioventricular (AV) nodal parameters were not independently associated with body temperature. QT subinterval analysis revealed that only QRS duration (SC = −0.121, P <.001) was independently associated with body temperature. Conclusion: Body temperature in normothermic healthy volunteers was associated with heart rate, P‐wave axis, J‐point amplitude in lead V4, and ventricular conductivity, the latter primarily through prolongation of the QRS duration. Abstract

Purpose: Elevated blood pressure induces electrocardiographic changes and is associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease later in life compared to normal blood pressure levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between normal to high normal blood pressure values (90–139/50–89 mmHg) and electrocardiographic parameters related to cardiac changes in hypertension in healthy young adults. Methods: Data from 1449 volunteers aged 18–30 years collected at our centre were analyzed. Only subjects considered healthy by a physician after review of collected data with systolic blood pressure values between 90 and 139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure values between 50 and 89 mmHg were included. Subjects were divided into groups with 10 mmHg systolic blood pressure increment between groups for analysis of electrocardiographic differences. Backward multivariate regression analysis with systolic and diastolic blood pressure as a continuous variable was performed. Results: The mean age was 22.7 ± 3.0 years, 73.7% were male. P-wave area, ventricular activation time, QRS-duration, Sokolow–Lyon voltages, Cornell Product, J-point–T-peak duration corrected for heart rate and maximum T-wave duration were significantly different between systolic blood pressure groups. In the multivariate model with gender, body mass index and cholesterol, ventricular rate (standardized coefficient (SC): +0.182, p <.001), ventricular activation time in lead V6 (SC= +0.065, p =.048), Sokolow–Lyon voltage (SC= +0.135, p <.001), and Cornell product (SC= +0.137, p <.001) were independently associated with systolic blood pressure, while ventricular rate (SC= +0.179, p <.001), P-wave area in lead V1 (SC= +0.079, p =.020), and Cornell product (SC= +0.091, p =.006) were independently associated with diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Blood pressure-related electrocardiographic changes were observed incrementally in a healthy young population with blood pressure in the normal range. These changes were an increased ventricular rate, increased atrial surface area, ventricular activation time and increased ventricular hypertrophy indices on a standard 12 lead electrocardiogram. Abstract

During reactive ion etching in a high density Ar/CF4 plasma, nonvolatile halogen compounds are generated on the glass surface and act as statistically distributed micromasks. As a consequence surface roughness occurs, which can be used as additional surface functionality in certain classes of applications, where defined optical scattering is desired. The glass etch process described in this contribution enables user-defined scattering characteristics. The deposition of a thin metallic layer of Cu on top of the samples before dry-etching provides an additional seed for the production of micromasks, resulting in higher reproducibility. By varying the etch parameters a multitude of different surface morphologies can be realized both on borosilicate glasses and on fused silica. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study presents a consumer and farmer safety evaluation on the use of four botanical pesticides in pepper berry crop protection. The pesticides evaluated include preparations from clove, tuba root, sweet flag and pyrethrum. Their safety evaluation was based on their active ingredients being eugenol, rotenone, β-asarone and pyrethrins, respectively. Botanical pesticides from Acorus calamus are of possible concern because of the genotoxic and carcinogenic ingredient β-asarone although estimated margins of exposure (MOE) for consumers indicate a low priority for risk management. For the other three botanical pesticides the margin of safety (MOS) between established acute reference doses and/or acceptable daily intake values and intake estimates for the consumer, resulting from their use as a botanical pesticide are not of safety concern, with the exception for levels of rotenone upon use of tuba root extracts on stored berries. Used levels of clove and pyrethrum as botanical pesticides in pepper berry crop production is not of safety concern for consumers or farmers, whereas for use of tuba root and sweet flag some risk factors were defined requiring further evaluation and/or risk management. It seems prudent to look for alternatives for use of sweet flag extracts containing β-asarone.

Abstract

AbstractThe Liberal International Order is in crisis. While the symptoms are clear to many, the deep roots of this crisis remain obscured. We propose that the Liberal International Order is in tension with the older Sovereign Territorial Order, which is founded on territoriality and borders to create group identities, the territorial state, and the modern international system. The Liberal International Order, in contrast, privileges universality at the expense of groups and group rights. A recognition of this fundamental tension makes it possible to see that some crises that were thought to be unconnected have a common cause: the neglect of the coordinating power of borders. We sketch out new research agendas to show how this tension manifests itself in a broad range of phenomena of interest.

46. Complement activation and its prognostic role in post-cardiac arrest patients

Abstract

Cardiac arrest causes generalized ischaemia/hypoxia, and subsequent resuscitation inflicts reperfusion injury, the pathology of which is not fully understood. Moreover, predicting the prognosis of comatose, post-cardiac arrest patients is a complex clinical challenge. We hypothesized that the extent of complement activation might be a reliable predictor of mortality in this population. Forty-six comatose cardiac arrest patients were enrolled into our prospective cohort study, conducted in a tertiary care university clinic. All subjects were cooled to 32-34 °C body temperature for 24 h and then allowed to rewarm to normothermia. All patients underwent diagnostic coronary angiography. On admission, at 6 and 24 h, blood samples were taken from the arterial catheter. In these, complement products (C3a, C3, C4d, C4, SC5b9 and Bb) were measured by ELISA in blood samples. Patients were followed up for 30 days; 22 patients (47.8%) died by the end of this period. We observed that complement activation (determined as the C3a to C3 ratio) was higher in non-survivors than in survivors at each time point. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, the C3a/C3 ratio determined 24 h after the initiation of therapeutic hypothermia predicted 30-day mortality regardless of age, sex and the APACHE II score. Complement activation occurs in post-cardiac arrest patients, and its extent correlates with 30-day survival. The C3a/C3 ratio might prove useful for estimating the prognosis of comatose post-cardiac arrest patients.

47. Bimodal magmatism in northeast Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula: Geochemical evidence for a Jurassic ensialic back-arc basin

Abstract

Major- and trace-element (XRF and INAA) and Nd-isotope analyses are presented on a Jurassic bimodal association of basic greenstones and silicic metavolcanic rocks from the Black Coast, northeast Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula. The greenstones are divided into three sub-groups, indistinct in the field, but which have geochemical characteristics of island arc tholeiites (group I), E-type MORB (group II), and continental arc basalts (group III). The tholeiites of group I and II have a similar range of ϵ Nd values (+3.7 to −1.2) and were produced from a heterogeneous, large ion lithophile element (LILE)-enriched, mantle source. The rocks of group III show a much stronger enrichment in LILE than groups I and II, and were derived from a mantle source with slightly lower ϵ Nd values (−2.3 to −5.0). The silicic volcanic rocks have low ϵ Nd values (−7.1 to −8.7) indicating a dominant crustal source, although trace element concentrations show a within-plate affinity. The origin and tectonic setting of this bimodal suite is discussed in relation to Mesozoic subduction along the proto-Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula and southern South America and intra-continental extension associated with the break-up of Gondwana. It is concluded that the mafic greenstones and silicic metavolcanic rocks formed in an ensialic back-arc basin setting where, during a period of continental lithospheric attenuation, the rise of a mantle diapir may have caused widespread bimodal magmatism. The geographical extent of the Palmer Land basin is unknown at present, but it may be part of a much larger Weddell Sea or proto-Weddell Sea back-arc basin system.
