The article focuses on industrial contribution to safe and effective dentifrices. The considerable contributions which industries have made to the advancement of dental science in general and the development of safe and effective dentifrices in particular have not been widely acclaimed. The reason for this oversight are not clear. It is possible that they derive from memories rooted in a not too distant past where industry and indeed much of human activity including dental practice, could proceed with its affairs unbridled by great concern for scientific verification of what it was doing.

The implications of private investment in biotechnology for biomedical researchers are addressed.
